Starlink supports VPNs that use TCP or UDP, but the setup depends on whether you need protection on one device or for every device in your home. The simplest method is to install a VPN app on the computer or phone that needs it. For whole-network coverage, connect a third-party router with a VPN client; on Starlink hardware that supports it, bypass mode lets that router take over routing.
To verify the result, check the VPN client’s connected status and compare your public IP with the VPN disconnected and connected. The connected result should show the VPN server’s exit address or apparent location. A DNS and WebRTC leak test can provide an additional check.

Does Starlink work with VPNs?
Yes. Starlink’s support guidance states: “Yes. Starlink supports VPNs that use TCP or UDP.” Because Starlink commonly uses carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), the VPN must be able to traverse NAT. Starlink says SSL-based VPNs typically work best for this purpose. For client-to-site connections, it lists OpenVPN, WireGuard and SSTP as generally working well with CGNAT, while PPTP and L2TP are generally less reliable. These are compatibility tendencies, not guarantees; the provider’s configuration, protocol implementation and network conditions still matter.
Recommended Free Tools
Read Starlink’s current compatibility guidance at Does Starlink work with VPNs?. Starlink does not promise a particular speed, latency or connection success rate for any VPN. Encryption and the extra routing hop can reduce performance, and the Starlink app may not work normally while a VPN is active.

Choose the right VPN arrangement
| Arrangement | What it covers | What you need | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| VPN app on a device | Only the computer, phone or tablet running the app | The provider’s official app and an account | One user or occasional VPN use |
| VPN client on a third-party router | Devices connected to that router, subject to its routing rules | A router with a compatible VPN-client feature, provider configuration files or credentials, and the correct Starlink connection method | Whole-home coverage, devices that cannot run an app, or centralized policy |
| Starlink router only | Normal Starlink routing; not automatically a VPN client | No VPN configuration unless your specific hardware or firmware documents one | Homes that do not need network-wide VPN routing |
Do not assume every Starlink router includes a built-in VPN client. Router generations differ in Ethernet options, menus and the way a third-party router must be connected. Identify your Starlink hardware before buying equipment or enabling bypass mode.
Before you configure anything
- Confirm that ordinary Starlink internet works with the VPN disconnected. Open several sites and check the Starlink app for service alerts.
- Identify whether you have a Starlink router generation that supports the connection arrangement you intend to use. Some installations need an Ethernet adapter or a different physical connection.
- Check that the VPN provider supports a router client if you want whole-network coverage. You may need a configuration file, certificate, username and password, or a provider-specific endpoint.
- Record how to restore your original network before changing routing. On some supported Starlink models, leaving bypass mode requires a factory reset.
- Decide whether all devices should use the tunnel. Banking, streaming, gaming, local-device discovery and work systems may need exceptions or a direct connection.
Option A: install a VPN on one computer or phone
1. Test Starlink without the VPN
Disconnect any existing VPN and verify that the device reaches the internet. If it cannot, fix the Starlink connection first; a VPN cannot be diagnosed while the underlying link is down.
2. Install the official client
Download the VPN provider’s official application for your operating system, install it, and sign in. Use the provider’s documentation for the exact app screens, because server lists, protocol controls and kill-switch names differ between products.

Choose a nearby server for lower delay, or a location required by your work or travel policy. If the default protocol fails, try a provider-supported protocol that handles CGNAT well, such as WireGuard or OpenVPN. Starlink’s guidance is compatibility advice rather than a guarantee, so keep the provider’s support instructions available.
4. Connect and verify in the app
Start the connection and wait for an unambiguous connected state. Do not treat a desktop notification that merely says the app is open as proof that traffic is tunneled. If the app exposes the protocol, server and assigned address, note them for troubleshooting.
5. Compare your public IP
- With the VPN off, open a reputable public-IP lookup page and record the displayed address, country and approximate region.
- Connect the VPN and repeat the lookup from the same device and network.
- Confirm that the address changes and that the VPN-on result corresponds to the selected exit server rather than your normal Starlink connection.
- Disconnect and repeat once more if the result is ambiguous or the lookup page cached the first response.
An IP change demonstrates that the lookup traffic is leaving through the VPN, but it does not prove that every application follows the tunnel. If your threat model includes DNS or browser real-time communication leaks, run a DNS/WebRTC leak test while connected and check whether it reports your ordinary resolver or local address.

6. Check real applications
Open the applications that matter to you: a work portal, a browser session, or a service that normally displays your region. A service can use its own location signals, so treat it as an additional observation rather than the sole test. If a required application fails, check the VPN provider’s split-tunneling, protocol and kill-switch settings before changing Starlink routing.
Option B: put the VPN client on a third-party router
A router VPN client can cover phones, televisions, consoles and other devices that cannot run a VPN application. It also centralizes credentials and policy. The trade-off is more complex wiring and troubleshooting: the router, Starlink gateway and VPN client each become possible failure points.
1. Select a compatible router
Choose a router that explicitly supports a VPN client, not merely VPN pass-through for devices running their own apps. Verify that its client supports the protocol and authentication format supplied by your VPN provider. For example, a router may support WireGuard but not the provider’s proprietary protocol, or accept OpenVPN files but not a required certificate chain.
Router interfaces are not standardized. Use the router manufacturer’s instructions for importing a profile, selecting the tunnel interface, setting DNS and defining which networks use the client. A generic example of router-client concepts is described in TP-Link’s VPN client setup guide; the menu names and supported features on your router may be different.
2. Confirm the Starlink connection method
Check the exact Starlink generation before connecting anything. Some generations require an Ethernet adapter, while others expose Ethernet differently or use a different arrangement for a third-party router. Do not copy a cable diagram from another model without confirming it applies to yours.
3. Decide whether bypass mode is needed
When a supported Starlink installation uses a third-party router to replace Starlink routing, Starlink’s bypass mode disables the Starlink router’s Wi-Fi and routing functions so the external router can manage the network. Read What is bypass mode? for the current model-specific behavior.

Bypass mode is not a universal requirement for every topology. Some users place a third-party router behind the Starlink router and accept double NAT; others use a supported bridge or bypass arrangement. The correct choice depends on the Starlink generation and the third-party router’s WAN and LAN capabilities. Do not enable bypass merely because you installed a VPN router.
4. Connect the hardware
- Power down or disconnect equipment as directed by the applicable Starlink and router manuals.
- Connect the Starlink Ethernet output, or the required adapter, to the third-party router’s WAN port.
- Connect a test computer to the third-party router by Ethernet first, if possible. Wired setup makes it easier to recover from a Wi-Fi configuration error.
- Restore power and wait for the Starlink and router indicators to settle before changing VPN settings.
Starlink’s Gen 3 Router Setup Guide illustrates indicators and setup for that guide’s hardware. Its light descriptions should not be generalized to every Starlink router.
5. Enable bypass only after you have a recovery plan
On models that expose the control, open the Starlink app and use the model-appropriate Settings path to enable Bypass Mode. The precise label and location can change by generation and software version. Save screenshots or notes of your original settings first.
Starlink states that Router Mini and Router 3 require a factory reset to exit bypass mode. That reset can erase router settings, so confirm the recovery procedure for your model before enabling bypass. If you cannot reach the Starlink app after the change, use the documented reset method rather than repeatedly changing cables.
6. Add the VPN profile to the router
Open the third-party router’s VPN-client section and follow its vendor instructions to import the provider’s profile or enter credentials. Select the intended tunnel as the default route only after confirming that the router still has ordinary internet access. Configure DNS according to the provider’s instructions if leak prevention is required, and decide whether local-network access or split tunneling is necessary.
Do not invent a universal path such as “Advanced > VPN” for every router. Labels vary, and some firmware requires a separate profile, policy table, kill switch or DNS page.

7. Test with one device
- Connect one test device to the third-party router and leave other household devices disconnected.
- Confirm that the router reports the VPN client as connected and identify the active profile.
- With the router VPN disabled, record the test device’s public IP.
- Enable the router VPN and repeat the public-IP check.
- Run a DNS/WebRTC leak check if your intended protection requires it.
- Browse to local devices and required services to verify that your routing policy did not break them.
Only after this test succeeds should you move televisions, workstations, cameras or smart-home devices to the new network. Keep a direct, non-VPN recovery path available if the router supports policy-based routing.
How to tell a Starlink outage from a VPN failure
When the VPN is off as well as on
If the internet fails with the VPN disconnected, investigate Starlink first. In the Starlink app, check alerts, reported outages and obstruction information. Inspect power and Ethernet connections and the router’s indicator. On the Gen 3 guide, solid white indicates connected, red indicates not connected and violet indicates bypass mode; those meanings are specific to that guide’s hardware and should not be assumed for other models.
When Starlink works but the tunnel does not
If normal browsing works with the VPN off but the client cannot establish a tunnel, the likely fault is in the VPN configuration, protocol support, credentials, server availability or NAT traversal. Try another provider-supported server or protocol, then contact the VPN provider. Starlink says it can help ensure the Starlink connection is operating but does not troubleshoot VPN connection issues because they are outside its network-support scope.
When only the Starlink app fails
The Starlink app may not function properly while a VPN is active. Temporarily disconnect the VPN and retry the app. If the app works only when disconnected, that behavior does not by itself prove that the VPN tunnel is broken; it indicates that the app and the active routing or DNS policy are incompatible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.CGNAT, public IPs and difficult VPN cases
CGNAT means the Starlink connection may not receive a directly reachable public IPv4 address. Outbound VPN clients can still work because they initiate the connection, but protocols that expect inbound reachability or unusual NAT behavior may fail. Starlink identifies PPTP and L2TP as generally poor fits for CGNAT and says OpenVPN, WireGuard and SSTP generally work better for client-to-site use.

Starlink notes that a Public IP may help with an incompatible VPN setup, but availability is limited to select service plans and a Public IP does not guarantee compatibility. Treat it as a possible network option, not a promised fix. Ask the VPN provider whether the failure is caused by inbound reachability, protocol negotiation, authentication or a blocked endpoint before changing service plans.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Performance and privacy trade-offs
- Throughput: Encryption consumes processing resources and the VPN server can add another bottleneck. Starlink does not publish a universal percentage for VPN speed loss, so measure your own connection rather than relying on a promised number.
- Latency: A distant exit server adds routing distance. Choose a nearby endpoint when interactive response matters.
- Location: Websites normally see the VPN exit address, but account history, cookies, GPS and other signals can still reveal a different location.
- Reliability: A kill switch can block traffic when the tunnel drops, which protects against accidental exposure but can look like an internet outage until the VPN reconnects.
- Local access: A full-tunnel policy may prevent discovery of printers, NAS devices or smart-home equipment. Use documented split-tunnel or local-LAN exceptions only when they fit your security requirements.
A repeatable verification checklist
- Starlink reaches the internet with the VPN off.
- The VPN app or router client explicitly reports connected.
- The public IP changes between VPN-off and VPN-on tests.
- The VPN-on IP corresponds to the selected exit location, allowing for approximate geolocation errors.
- DNS and WebRTC checks show no unintended resolver or browser-address leak, if those leaks matter to your use case.
- Required applications work, and you understand which devices or routes are excluded.
- You know how to disable the VPN and, if applicable, leave bypass mode without losing access.
Passing these checks shows that the tested device or router path is using the VPN at that moment. It is not a guarantee that every application, device or future network change will follow the same route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Starlink bypass mode to use a VPN?
No. A VPN app on one device needs no bypass mode. Bypass is a model-dependent option when a third-party router is intended to replace Starlink routing; some installations instead keep the Starlink router in place and accept a different topology.
Which VPN protocols are most suitable for Starlink CGNAT?
Starlink says OpenVPN, WireGuard and SSTP generally work well for client-to-site use, while PPTP and L2TP generally do not. SSL-based VPNs typically traverse CGNAT best, but compatibility still depends on the provider and configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy did my public IP not change after connecting?
Confirm that the client says connected, repeat the lookup in a private browser window, and check whether the application is excluded by split tunneling. On a router, verify that the test device is using the router’s VPN policy and that the profile is the active default route.
Can Starlink support fix my VPN tunnel?
Starlink can help verify that the Starlink connection itself is operating, but it says VPN connection troubleshooting is outside its network-support scope. VPN configuration and tunnel failures should be handled with the VPN provider.
