How to Set Up a USB Ethernet Adapter on Linux and Verify Link Speed

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Connect the USB Ethernet adapter and cable, identify the interface Linux created, enable it through your distribution’s network manager, and run sudo ethtool <interface>. In the result, check link detection/state, Speed, Duplex, and autonegotiation. The reported speed is the negotiated Ethernet link rate between your adapter and the router or switch—not a measurement of internet or file-transfer throughput.

The exact interface name depends on the machine. It may look like enx… or another predictable name, so use the name shown by Linux rather than assuming eth0.

What you need before starting

A USB Ethernet setup has several independent parts. The adapter must be detected by the computer, its chipset must have a usable driver in the running Linux kernel, the cable and peer port must establish an Ethernet link, and the network manager must configure an address. A problem in any one layer can look like “the adapter does not work.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A USB Ethernet adapter that matches the computer’s connector and USB bus. A USB-C adapter on a USB-C hub, for example, still depends on the hub and host connection for the available bus capability.
  • An Ethernet cable connected to the adapter and to an active router or switch port.
  • A Linux installation with the appropriate kernel driver for the adapter’s chipset.
  • Permission to inspect network-device settings. Some systems allow ordinary users to read ethtool output; others require sudo.

The adapter’s advertised Ethernet rate is only one limit. The host USB connection, adapter hardware, cable, and router or switch port all affect the mode that can be negotiated.

Connect the adapter and identify its Linux interface

1. Attach the hardware in the right order

  1. Plug the USB Ethernet adapter into the computer, directly or through the hub or dock you intend to use.
  2. Connect the Ethernet cable to the adapter and an active port on your router or switch.
  3. Wait a few seconds for the kernel and network manager to notice the device.
  4. Open a terminal and list interfaces:
ip link

The ip link output includes every network interface known to the kernel. Look for the newly added wired interface. Predictable names often begin with enx, but naming is system-dependent and can differ with udev rules, docks, virtual machines, or distribution configuration.

2. Use the name Linux actually reports

Suppose the command shows an interface named enx001122334455. That complete name is what you would substitute in later commands:

sudo ethtool enx001122334455

Do not copy that example name literally unless it is the name on your computer. Debian’s NetworkConfiguration guidance likewise starts by identifying the interface before inspecting or configuring it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check the graphical network panel too

On a desktop distribution, the wired device may appear in the system network settings as soon as the adapter is detected. The panel can show whether the connection is enabled and whether it has an address. It is useful for confirming that the desktop’s network service sees the interface, but the terminal output remains the most portable way to identify its exact name.

Bring the wired connection up

NetworkManager-managed desktops

If your distribution uses NetworkManager, select the wired connection in its network settings and enable it. For a normal home or office network, leave IPv4 configuration on automatic (DHCP) unless your administrator supplied a static address, gateway, or DNS settings. When the interface is enabled and the cable is connected, NetworkManager can request an address from the network.

NetworkManager’s settings reference documents wired properties such as speed, duplex, and autonegotiation in its connection model: nm-settings-dbus. The exact labels and command syntax vary by distribution and NetworkManager version, so follow the controls presented by the system you are running rather than applying a command copied from a different release.

Other Linux network stacks

Servers, minimal installations, and some specialized distributions may not use NetworkManager. They can use another network service or a distribution-specific configuration file. Enable the interface and configure DHCP or a static address through that system’s documented mechanism. The discovery and verification steps in this guide still apply: identify the interface with ip link, then inspect the Ethernet link with ethtool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm that the interface is enabled

ip link also shows administrative state. An interface that is disabled by the operating system must be enabled by the active network-management system before it can obtain an address. If the desktop says the cable is unplugged, do not treat that as an IP-configuration problem yet; first establish the physical Ethernet link.

Check Ethernet link speed with ethtool

Run the standard inspection command

Use the interface name from ip link:

sudo ethtool <interface>

For example:

sudo ethtool enx001122334455

The ethtool(8) manual page describes ethtool as a utility for querying or controlling network-driver and hardware settings. For link interpretation, Linux’s ethtool netlink documentation defines the link-state and link-mode information exposed by the kernel.

Read the fields that answer the question

In the output, find these items:

  • Link detected or equivalent link-state information: whether the adapter currently senses an Ethernet partner and physical link.
  • Speed: the negotiated Ethernet rate, reported in Mb/s by the kernel’s ethtool link-mode information.
  • Duplex: normally full duplex on a modern switched network. A half-duplex result is a compatibility or configuration warning.
  • Auto-negotiation: whether the adapter and peer are negotiating their common capabilities rather than being manually restricted.

A healthy result has link detected or an up state, a concrete speed appropriate to the adapter and peer, and full duplex. The exact rate depends on what both ends and the physical path can support.

Interpret an example without confusing units

If ethtool reports Speed: 1000Mb/s, that means the Ethernet link negotiated 1,000 megabits per second at the physical/network-interface layer. It does not promise 1,000 megabits per second from an internet speed test, nor does it predict the exact rate of a file copy. Protocol overhead, the internet service, the remote server, storage, CPU load, and other network segments can all reduce application throughput.

What a negotiated link rate does—and does not—measure

The displayed speed is determined by negotiation between the adapter and the equipment at the other end of the cable. It is a property of that Ethernet segment at that moment. A faster internet plan cannot make a 100Mb/s negotiated link become a gigabit link, and a gigabit link does not make a slow internet service deliver gigabit throughput.

For a meaningful throughput test, keep the Ethernet link result separate from the test method. A speed-test site measures the path to its server; a file copy measures the capabilities of both storage systems and the protocol used. If the negotiated rate is correct but transfers are slow, investigate the internet service, remote server, storage, workload, or another network segment rather than repeatedly changing Ethernet settings.

If the USB Ethernet adapter does not appear

Check whether Linux detected the USB hardware

If the adapter is missing from ip link, first reseat it and try another USB port or the direct host port instead of a hub. Inspect the system’s USB-device information and system logs for a connection or driver message. Debian’s network-configuration guidance also recommends checking logs and loaded modules when identifying why an interface was not created.

Do not assume that every adapter uses the same driver. USB Ethernet products can contain different chipsets even when their external appearance is similar. The running kernel must include or load a driver that supports the particular chipset. Consult the adapter’s chipset documentation and your distribution’s kernel documentation before installing anything; there is no single package-install command that applies to every Linux distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate detection from configuration

A device can be visible to the USB subsystem yet fail to create a network interface if its driver is absent or fails to initialize. Conversely, an interface can exist in ip link while the network manager has not enabled it. Treat these as different checks:

  • USB listing and logs: was the physical device detected and did a driver bind?
  • ip link: did the kernel create a network interface?
  • Network settings: is the interface enabled and configured for the local network?
  • ethtool: did the cable and peer establish a link, and at what rate?

If the interface appears but has no link

When ip link shows the interface but ethtool reports no detected link, check the physical path before changing Linux settings.

  1. Unplug and firmly reconnect the Ethernet cable at both ends.
  2. Try a known-good cable.
  3. Move the cable to a confirmed working router or switch port.
  4. Check the adapter’s link LEDs, if it has them.
  5. Confirm that the interface is enabled by the network manager.

A missing link is usually a cable, peer-port, adapter, or physical-connection issue. DHCP cannot succeed until the Ethernet link exists, so changing IP settings is not the first remedy for a “cable unplugged” state.

Why the reported speed is lower than expected

Compare every capability in the path

Negotiation selects a mode that both ends can use. Compare:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Ethernet rate advertised by the USB adapter.
  • The rate supported by the router or switch port.
  • The USB bus capability available through the computer, hub, or dock.
  • The cable and its physical condition.
  • The driver’s support for the adapter’s chipset and the running kernel.

For example, an adapter marketed for a higher Ethernet rate cannot use that rate if it is connected through a host path that constrains the adapter, or if the peer port supports only a lower mode. A damaged or unsuitable cable can also cause negotiation at a lower rate or prevent link entirely.

Use the observed values to narrow the fault

Unknown or unsupported values in ethtool

Some drivers do not expose every link-mode detail. If ethtool prints unknown or unsupported values, that output does not prove that the physical adapter cannot work. Confirm whether the interface exists, inspect system logs and loaded modules, and identify the exact chipset and driver. Then check documentation for your distribution and kernel.

Continue to use the parts of the result that are available. A detected link and a working network address can establish that the adapter is functional even when a driver cannot report a precise speed.

Do not force speed and duplex as a first fix

Normal Ethernet autonegotiation should remain enabled unless the adapter documentation and the network administrator require a specific mode. Manually forcing a value can remove otherwise valid modes from negotiation and create a mismatch with the router or switch.

NetworkManager’s wired-setting reference states that a nonzero speed must be specified together with duplex, and the device must support the requested speed. In other words, setting a speed alone is not a valid general repair. A forced setting can also make troubleshooting harder by masking a cable or peer-port limitation.

If a controlled network requires a fixed setting, record the adapter’s supported modes, the peer port’s configuration, and the exact speed/duplex pair before changing anything. Restore autonegotiation if the change does not establish a reliable link.

Choose a USB Ethernet adapter that fits Linux and your network

When selecting hardware, compare the complete path rather than the headline Ethernet number.

  • USB connector and bus: match USB-A or USB-C to the computer, and account for any hub or dock between the host and adapter.
  • Ethernet capability: choose a rate that the router or switch can use; a higher-rated adapter cannot raise the capability of a lower-rated peer port.
  • Chipset and driver support: verify support for the target distribution and kernel. External shape or connector type does not identify the internal chipset.
  • Cable and port: use a cable and peer port suitable for the rate you expect to negotiate.

No single adapter model or chipset is universally compatible with every Linux release. Check the exact chipset and distribution support before buying, especially for a server, an older kernel, or a setup involving a dock.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable verification checklist

  1. Connect the adapter directly or through the intended hub or dock.
  2. Connect the cable to an active router or switch port.
  3. Run ip link and record the newly created interface name.
  4. Enable that interface in the distribution’s normal network manager and allow DHCP or apply the administrator’s supplied static settings.
  5. Run sudo ethtool <interface>.
  6. Record link detected/state, Speed, Duplex, and autonegotiation.
  7. Compare the negotiated rate with the adapter, USB path, cable, and peer-port capabilities.
  8. If transfers are slow despite a correct link rate, test the internet or file-transfer path separately.

Keeping the interface name and ethtool result together makes later troubleshooting easier, particularly when a system has several USB devices or when plugging the adapter into a different port changes its predictable name.

Commands and references

The two commands needed for the basic workflow are:

ip link
sudo ethtool <interface>

Use the first to discover the system-dependent interface name and the second to inspect link state and negotiated settings. For authoritative details, consult the ethtool manual, the Linux kernel’s ethtool netlink documentation, NetworkManager’s wired-settings reference, and Debian’s network-configuration guide.
