Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo keep a Raspberry Pi YouTube stream running through a mains outage, size the UPS for the measured load of the Pi and every device the stream depends on—including the router or modem—and confirm that it can transfer power without rebooting the Pi. Choose a regulated 5 V supply path compatible with your Pi model, test the full FFmpeg setup under load, and configure a safe low-battery shutdown. There is no dependable universal runtime: it depends on the UPS’s usable battery energy, conversion losses and your actual load.
What a UPS must keep powered
A UPS for the Pi alone may not keep a YouTube stream online. If the router, modem, Ethernet switch, camera or capture device loses power, the stream can still fail even while the Pi remains on. List every powered component and decide which must ride through an outage.
- Raspberry Pi and its storage, fan and USB devices.
- Camera or capture hardware, if it needs separate power.
- Router, modem and any Ethernet switch needed to reach the internet.
This is a practical system-design consideration, not a prescribed universal wiring layout. Check whether each device can be powered from the UPS you select; an AC UPS may be easier to use for several devices with their normal adapters, while a Pi UPS HAT or DC board is designed around the Pi’s power path.
Choose a UPS for your Raspberry Pi model and measured load
Raspberry Pi’s recommended supply ratings are a starting point for compatibility, not a measurement of what your board draws while encoding and streaming. Raspberry Pi says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply.” Its voltage recommendations are measured at the plug, so allow for cable voltage loss.

| Raspberry Pi model | Recommended supply rating | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 5 and Pi 500 | 5 V at 5 A | With a 5 V at 3 A supply, Pi 5 peripheral power is limited to 600 mA. |
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | 5 V at 3 A | This is the recommended supply rating, not measured stream consumption. |
| Pi 3, Pi 2, Pi 1 and Zero models listed in Raspberry Pi’s table | 5 V at 2.5 A | Check the exact model and its connections. |
Compare the UPS’s regulated output voltage and continuous current rating with your actual Pi-plus-peripheral load. Also verify connector compatibility, peak output capability, battery type and usable energy, transfer behavior, and support for battery monitoring and clean shutdown. A board that fits the GPIO header is not automatically powerful enough for the Pi or its peripherals.
Why output ratings matter
For example, the Pi-UpTime UPS 2.0 datasheet specifies a 5.0 V UPS output and a 2.5 A maximum, below the official recommended current for a Pi 4 or Pi 5. It supports one or two 18650 Li-ion or Li-PO4 cells, but the datasheet does not establish how long it would run a particular FFmpeg stream. The UPSafePi shield manual, Revision 1 dated 2023-07-25, lists a 0–2 A average output range; that figure does not establish full-load runtime either. Treat these as examples of why to read the exact product documentation, not as a recommendation for your build.

How to set up and test the UPS
- Record the full equipment list. Note your Pi model, camera or capture device, USB equipment, storage and fan, plus the network equipment that must stay on. Identify which items take power from the Pi and which need separate outlets.
- Establish a stable baseline. Run the setup from a suitable Pi supply with a sound cable before adding the UPS. Check the Pi model’s recommended supply rating and account for cable loss; the rating is not your measured streaming draw.
- Choose the power architecture. Evaluate either a Pi UPS HAT/DC board or an AC UPS supplying the Pi’s normal adapter and the required network devices. They are different approaches, not interchangeable specifications. For a unit sold in India, check the actual unit’s mains input range and outlet standard, as well as local stock, warranty and battery replacement availability; none is established here for a particular model.
- Measure or estimate the complete live load. Test with the real camera, USB devices and network gear active during a representative stream. Compare that load with the UPS’s documented continuous output and usable battery energy, accounting for conversion losses and reserving enough battery to shut down cleanly. Do not use the Pi’s recommended supply current or a UPS’s maximum output current as a runtime estimate.
- Check battery reporting and shutdown support. Confirm that the exact UPS reports battery state or provides a low-battery signal, and that compatible software can shut the Pi down safely. Do not assume these features just because a product is called a UPS.
- Test power transfer while streaming. Start a representative FFmpeg stream, remove mains power as a controlled test, and check that the UPS transfers without rebooting the Pi. Watch for undervoltage warnings, dropped capture input or network interruption. Test the router and other essential devices too.
- Test the end of battery reserve and recovery. Verify that low-battery shutdown works before relying on the system for a public stream. Confirm the Pi shuts down cleanly, then check that it boots safely when mains returns and that the stream restarts or resumes in the way your setup requires.
Configure YouTube Live and protect the stream key
UPS setup does not replace YouTube’s encoder requirements. YouTube Live lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, calls for constant-bitrate encoding, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds). It recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data through Google’s servers. Its advanced settings list stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Confirm the current YouTube encoder guidance when configuring your stream.
These platform settings do not prove that a given Raspberry Pi can encode every resolution and frame rate. Test the selected FFmpeg settings on the target board while monitoring the stream and the full power chain. Keep the YouTube stream key private: avoid putting it in public command histories, screenshots or other material that could expose it.

How long will a Raspberry Pi UPS last while streaming?
There is no responsible runtime figure without the exact UPS battery specification and the measured load. First determine how much power the complete live setup draws under representative conditions. Then use the UPS maker’s documented usable battery energy and account for conversion losses and the reserve needed for safe shutdown. A battery’s nominal capacity or a board’s maximum output current alone is not enough to establish runtime.
For a useful comparison between candidates, check regulated voltage under load; continuous and peak current; battery chemistry and usable energy; runtime measured at a comparable load; transfer gap and brownout behavior; low-battery notification and automatic shutdown support; connector and Pi compatibility; capacity to power network equipment; and India-specific mains compatibility, stock, warranty and replacement batteries. No particular India-market product, price, warranty or tested runtime is established here.

Common UPS setup problems
- The Pi reboots when mains fails: The UPS may not transfer quickly or cleanly enough, or its output may sag under load. Test transfer with all peripherals active and compare the measured load with the UPS’s documented output limits.
- Undervoltage warnings appear: Check the supply path, cable loss, connector fit and load. Raspberry Pi documentation gives a low-voltage detection threshold below 4.63 V (±5%) on models since Pi B+ (2014), excluding the Zero range. This is a detection threshold, not a target operating voltage.
- The Pi stays on but the stream drops: Check the router, modem, switch and capture device; any unpowered dependency can interrupt the stream. Also confirm that the network connection itself remains available through the outage.
- The advertised battery life is not achieved: Runtime depends on usable battery energy, conversion losses and the real combined load. Measure the running setup and rely on runtime data that applies to a comparable load, rather than inferring hours from a current rating.
- The Pi loses data after power runs out: Sudden power-down can corrupt storage. Verify low-battery signalling and supported shutdown integration, and test the shutdown and reboot process before leaving the stream unattended.
