How to Set Up a TV for Console Gaming: Enable 4K, 120Hz, VRR and Game Mode

For the best console picture and responsiveness, the TV, its specific HDMI input, the cable, the console and the game must all support the same mode. Check the TV manual first, connect the console directly with the supplied cable, enable the input’s enhanced format, select Game picture mode, configure the console, then verify what signal the console detects.

Menu names differ by TV model and region. A television advertising 4K or HDMI 2.1 does not automatically provide 4K at 120Hz, VRR and ALLM on every input.

What 4K, 120Hz, 120 FPS, VRR and Game Mode actually mean

These settings describe different parts of the gaming signal. Confusing them is the main reason a console appears to be configured correctly while a game still runs at a lower frame rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Setting What it controls What must support it
4K Image resolution, normally 3840 × 2160 on a television The console, TV input, cable path and game output
120Hz How often the TV can refresh the image The TV input, console output and connection bandwidth
120 FPS How many frames a game renders each second The particular game and its performance setting, as well as the display path
VRR Variable refresh rate, allowing the display refresh to follow changing frame timing The TV input, console and game or system output
ALLM Automatic Low Latency Mode, which can switch a compatible TV into its low-latency picture preset The TV, console and their HDMI connection
Game picture mode The TV’s gaming-oriented picture preset The TV; it may activate automatically or require manual selection

A console set to 120Hz is therefore not proof that every title renders at 120 FPS. The game has to offer a high-frame-rate mode, and that mode can change the selected resolution. Fortnite’s official instructions are a clear example: the system output is enabled first, then the game’s own 120 FPS option is turned on.

Check the exact TV model and HDMI input first

Find the model-specific capability list

Open the television’s manual or manufacturer help page and look specifically for:

  • 4K at 120Hz support, rather than 4K and 120Hz listed as unrelated features
  • VRR and ALLM support
  • Which numbered HDMI input supports each feature
  • Whether the input needs an Enhanced, High bandwidth, or similar HDMI signal format

Do not infer the complete feature set from an HDMI version label. Two inputs on the same TV can have different bandwidth or feature support, and model and regional variants can use different ports. The Sony TV guide, for example, directs owners to the input marked for 4K 120Hz or 8K, or to the input whose format can be changed to the corresponding enhanced option. Treat that as a model-specific example, not a universal menu path.

Record the port you intend to use

Before moving equipment, note the HDMI socket number and any label printed beside it. If the manual says only one or two inputs support 4K/120, use one of those directly for the console. A sound receiver, switch or capture device between the console and TV may not pass the same signal even when the TV itself supports it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the supplied cable and a direct connection

Start with the cable that came with the console

For troubleshooting, both PlayStation and Xbox recommend starting with the supplied cable. PlayStation specifies the included PS5 cable or a replacement Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120Hz; Xbox gives equivalent guidance for Series X advanced display features. A replacement cable is useful for a damaged cable or a longer run, but it cannot add 4K/120, VRR or ALLM that the TV, input, console or game does not support.

Bypass intermediaries while testing

  1. Power off the console and TV.
  2. Connect the console directly to the TV input identified in the manual.
  3. Use the supplied cable first, with no receiver, switch or adapter in the path.
  4. Configure and test the signal.
  5. Only after the direct connection works, reconnect an intermediary and test again.

This isolates the device that is limiting the signal. If the direct connection works but the receiver path does not, check whether that receiver supports the same resolution, refresh rate and variable-refresh features; otherwise keep the console connected directly and use the TV’s audio-return connection or another supported audio arrangement.

Enable the TV’s enhanced HDMI format and Game mode

Turn on the high-bandwidth format for the chosen input

Many televisions ship with a standard HDMI format selected to maximize compatibility. That mode may not expose 4K at 120Hz or VRR until you change it. On the Sony guide’s documented models, the path is Settings > Channels & Inputs > External inputs > HDMI signal format; select the enhanced format that matches the desired mode. Other manufacturers use different labels and menu locations, so follow the instructions for your exact model.

Select Game picture mode

Some supported combinations switch to Game mode automatically when a console is detected. If the TV remains in Cinema, Standard or another preset, open the picture settings for that HDMI input and choose Game manually. Game mode is a TV-side setting; it does not enable a game’s 120 FPS option by itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep TV firmware current

Install available TV firmware updates before concluding that a feature is missing. Xbox notes that updates can affect reported display capabilities. After updating, reselect the correct HDMI input format if the television reset that option.

Configure a PlayStation 5 for 4K, 120Hz and VRR

Open the video-output controls

On the PS5, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. PlayStation says the console detects the TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution, but you can review and adjust the relevant controls.

  1. Set Resolution to Automatic for capability-based selection, or choose 2160p when you specifically want 4K and the TV path supports it.
  2. Turn on 120 Hz Output when the TV and the title support 120Hz operation.
  3. Turn on VRR when the TV supports it and you want compatible games to use variable refresh.
  4. Leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while troubleshooting 4K/120Hz detection.
  5. Allow ALLM when your TV supports automatic low-latency switching. PlayStation notes that with VRR output, the console can enter low-latency mode even when ALLM is Off.

If the console does not offer the expected combination, return to the TV manual and verify the input number, then retest with the direct supplied-cable connection. The PS5 settings cannot create a capability that the display path does not report.

Choose the PS5 performance preference when a game requires it

Some games expose a system-level preference for performance modes. For a title that offers a 120 FPS option, set the PS5 game preset to Performance Mode if the game’s instructions require it, then enable the title’s own high-frame-rate setting. The game may lower resolution or use a different rendering mode to reach its target.

Configure an Xbox Series X|S and confirm what the TV reports

Read the 4K TV Details screen

On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details. This screen reports the modes the console detects from the TV connection and is the quickest way to identify whether the chosen input and cable are exposing 4K and high-refresh capabilities.

Select the refresh rate and automatic detection

  1. From TV & display options, choose the desired refresh rate, such as 120Hz when the detected TV path supports it.
  2. Use automatic display detection rather than manually forcing HDMI or DVI when you want the console to read the TV’s capabilities. Xbox states that 4K is unavailable when HDMI or DVI is manually selected as the display type.
  3. If the expected modes are absent, update the TV firmware and repeat the 4K TV Details check.
  4. Keep the console’s supplied Ultra High Speed cable connected during diagnosis.

Xbox menu labels can change with system updates; the display-information screen remains the useful reference even if surrounding wording differs from the November 6, 2020 Xbox guidance.

Enable 120 FPS inside the game

Why the system setting is not enough

A 120Hz output tells the console and TV to use a 120Hz-capable signal. It does not force a title to render 120 frames per second. The title must support the mode, and developers may require a separate Performance, High frame rate or 120 FPS switch.

  1. On Xbox, enable 120Hz in the console’s TV and display options. On PS5, use the console’s 120Hz Output setting and, where required, the Performance Mode game preset.
  2. Launch Fortnite and open its video settings.
  3. Enable the game’s 120 FPS Mode option.
  4. If the option is missing, confirm the TV, HDMI input, cable and console all report 120Hz support; the game hides the setting when the complete path is not eligible.

Epic also warns that the output resolution can be affected when the complete TV and audio-video setup cannot sustain 4K at 120Hz. That is a game-specific trade-off, not evidence that the console is malfunctioning.

Verify the final signal instead of trusting a label

PS5 checks

Return to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and review the detected resolution, 120 Hz Output and VRR states. Change one setting at a time and check again so you know which change altered the result. A TV’s on-screen information panel can provide an additional confirmation if your model offers one, but the console’s detected capabilities are the authoritative check for the connection it is actually using.

Xbox checks

Use Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details after every cable, port or input-format change. The list should reflect the modes available through that exact HDMI path. If a mode disappears when you reconnect a receiver or switch, that intermediary is the limiting component.

Game checks

Open the game’s video or graphics menu and confirm its performance setting. A 120Hz console report and a 120 FPS game option are separate confirmations; both are needed for a title-specific 120 FPS mode.

Troubleshoot a missing 4K, 120Hz or VRR option

Symptom Likely check Action
4K is available but 120Hz is not The selected HDMI input may not support 4K at 120Hz, or its enhanced format is disabled. Move the console to the model-approved input and enable that input’s enhanced or high-bandwidth format.
The console reports only 60Hz Cable, port, receiver or TV firmware may be limiting the handshake. Use the supplied console cable, connect directly to the TV, update firmware and check the console’s display-information screen again.
VRR is absent The TV input may not support VRR, or the console is not detecting the feature. Verify VRR support for that exact port in the TV manual, enable the input’s enhanced format and retest direct to the TV.
Game mode does not activate Automatic switching is unavailable or disabled. Open the TV picture settings for the console’s HDMI input and select Game manually.
A 120 FPS option is missing in a game The title may not support 120 FPS, or the console and TV path has not qualified. Check the game’s own support information, confirm the system’s 120Hz setting and verify the TV capabilities shown by the console.
Xbox 4K details show unexpected limitations Display detection may have been manually set to HDMI or DVI, or firmware is outdated. Restore automatic display detection, update the TV and inspect 4K TV details again.
PS5 4K/120Hz output is unstable Resolution or video transfer settings may not be negotiating correctly. Set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p, set Video Transfer Rate to Automatic, then retest with a direct connection.

PlayStation’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends confirming the supplied cable or a rated Ultra High Speed replacement. If changing the cable has no effect, remember that a cable cannot overcome an unsupported port, console or game.

Understand the trade-offs before choosing a mode

4K versus high frame rate

Some games offer a quality mode that prioritizes higher resolution and a performance mode that prioritizes more frames. A 120 FPS setting can reduce output resolution or use a less demanding rendering mode, especially when the television path cannot sustain 4K at 120Hz. Choose the game’s quality option when image detail matters more to you, or its performance option when motion smoothness and response are the priority.

VRR and fixed refresh

VRR is useful only when the TV input and console both support it and the game participates in the mode. Leave it enabled when you want the console to adapt refresh timing to supported game output; disable it only as a diagnostic step or when a particular title’s instructions call for a fixed output.

ALLM and manual Game mode

ALLM automates the switch into a low-latency preset on compatible equipment. It does not replace the TV’s Game mode settings, and it does not make an unsupported television compatible. If the TV does not switch automatically, select Game mode manually for the console input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a new cable or TV is actually justified

Replace the cable only for a reason

The included cable may already be suitable. Consider an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for the intended 4K/120Hz use when the original is damaged, too short, or unavailable. Match the replacement to the required length and run it directly from console to the supported TV input while testing.

Upgrade the TV when the limitation is built in

If the manual confirms that no HDMI input supports the desired resolution and refresh combination, no setting or cable can unlock it. A future TV purchase should be evaluated by its exact port capabilities: 4K at 120Hz, VRR, ALLM, the number of inputs providing those features, and whether an enhanced input format is required. Compare those specifications with the console and games you actually use rather than relying on a generic HDMI label.

A reliable setup order for any console household

  1. Identify the exact TV model and the HDMI input that supports the target features.
  2. Update the TV firmware.
  3. Connect the console directly with its supplied cable.
  4. Enable the TV input’s enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI format.
  5. Select Game picture mode, automatically or manually.
  6. Configure PS5 Video Output or Xbox TV & display options.
  7. Check the console’s detected display information.
  8. Enable the game’s own performance or 120 FPS mode.
  9. Reconnect any receiver or switch and repeat the verification if you need it in the final setup.

This sequence changes one part of the signal path at a time, so a missing feature can be traced to the TV model, input, cable, intermediary, console setting or game rather than guessed from an advertisement.
