There is no single set of numbers that suits every TCL generation, room, source, or panel. Use this workflow for TCL Google TV models such as the QM8K and the 2025 QM6K, QM7K, and QM8K, while checking your model’s manual when menu names differ.
1. Identify the TV, software and source first
Write down the full model number shown on the television’s information screen or its label. “TCL Mini-LED” describes a category, not one identical menu system. Picture controls can vary with model, software version, input, content type and selected picture mode.

Also identify where the picture is coming from:
- A built-in streaming application
- An antenna or cable broadcast
- An HDMI device such as a game console, disc player or streaming box
Do not assume that a setting changed while watching one HDMI port will automatically affect an app or another port. TCL documents both current-input and all-input options, and some models keep separate settings for different signal types.
Find the picture controls
On the QM8K, the documented route is Settings > All settings > Display & Sound. Select the picture controls from there. Other TCL Google TV models may use slightly different labels or locations, so follow the on-screen menu for your exact model rather than forcing the QM8K path onto another generation.

Make your first adjustments with familiar content: a dark film scene, a daylight scene, skin tones, subtitles and a fast-action sequence. A single spectacular demo clip can hide problems that appear in ordinary television, compressed streaming or broadcast video.
2. Choose a sensible picture mode
Picture mode changes a group of controls at once. It is the most efficient starting point because it establishes a baseline before you alter individual settings.
| Viewing goal | Starting choice | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Films and scripted television | FILMMAKER MODE, where available; otherwise Movie | Whether shadow detail, color and motion look natural in your room |
| Bright daytime room | A brighter available preset, or Movie with carefully increased luminance controls | Readability without clipped highlights or an artificially harsh image |
| Sports and fast action | Sports or another action-oriented preset | Clarity of moving players and lines versus an overly smooth “video” appearance |
| Games | The model’s game-oriented mode, if available | Responsiveness, readable dark areas and correct HDR behavior from the console |
TCL’s QM8K guide describes FILMMAKER MODE as restoring “the real film scene and feel the filmmaker’s expression of the image.” That is a description of the mode’s intent, not proof that it is the best choice in every room or for every source. Movie and FILMMAKER MODE are useful film-oriented starting points; judge the result in the room where you actually watch.
A brighter preset can make a dim room problem less noticeable, but brightness and accuracy are not the same objective. If a mode looks more vivid, check faces, gray shadows and bright clouds before deciding it is better.
3. Fix a picture that looks too dim
On 2025 TCL models including QM6K, QM7K and QM8K, TCL says Standard mode is designed to save energy and may therefore appear dimmer. Changing picture mode is a practical troubleshooting step when the screen seems unexpectedly dark. It is not a recommendation that the brighter mode is more accurate.

- Open the picture menu while the dim source is playing.
- Try Movie, FILMMAKER MODE or a brighter available mode and compare the same scene.
- Check the result in both a dark scene and a bright scene. A mode that solves one may flatten blacks or make highlights uncomfortable.
- If the picture is still dark, inspect the luminance, local-contrast and HDR controls described below instead of raising every slider indiscriminately.
Room lighting matters. Daylight falling directly on the screen can make a correct black level look washed out, while a dark room can make an aggressively bright preset tiring. Adjust for the lighting in which you watch most often, and consider using separate modes for day and night if your model permits it.
4. Understand the brightness and HDR controls
TCL’s manuals define several controls that are often confused with one another. Change one control at a time, make a small adjustment, and return to the same test scene before changing anything else.
| Control | What it changes | Useful way to judge it |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Overall screen luminance | Raise only enough for the room; watch whether dark scenes become tiring or gray |
| Contrast | White-level intensity | Check clouds, snow, white shirts and subtitles for lost texture |
| Black Level | How dark portions of the image are represented | Use a shadow scene; look for crushed detail or a washed-out black floor |
| Gamma | Mid-range brightness between dark and bright tones | Compare faces, walls and interiors, not just the darkest bars |
| Dynamic Tone Mapping | Balances brightness and detail in HDR material | Watch bright highlights and dark detail together; more punch can change the intended balance |
| Local Contrast | Adjusts backlight and signal contrast by area | Look around subtitles, stars and high-contrast objects for halos or unstable brightness |
| Peak Luminance | Sets maximum brightness in local-dimming areas | Compare specular highlights with nearby shadow detail and watch for blooming |
HDR tone mapping, local contrast and peak luminance are separate functions. Increasing all three is not a universal upgrade: it can produce brighter highlights while losing texture, exaggerating halos or making dark areas less natural. TCL’s official documentation explains what these controls do but does not establish one correct numeric value for every TCL Mini-LED panel. Avoid copying fixed values from an unrelated model or room.
Use the TV’s HDR state, not an SDR guess
Many televisions expose different controls or mode memories when HDR content is detected. Make adjustments while HDR is actually playing if you are solving an HDR problem. Then switch to ordinary SDR content and check it separately. A setting that looks right on a streaming service’s SDR menu may not be appropriate for a 4K HDR film or a console game.
5. Keep color and clarity processing restrained
The picture menus can include Color saturation, Tint, Color temperature, Sharpness, Noise reduction, Gradation clear and related processing. Their names and availability vary by model and signal.

- Color saturation: Increase only if the entire image looks genuinely muted. Excessive saturation makes faces and foliage conspicuous rather than realistic.
- Tint: Leave it centered unless a known source has a persistent green or magenta cast. Use skin tones and neutral gray objects as references.
- Color temperature: A warmer setting often suits films, while a cooler setting can look brighter at first. Do not treat a preference as a measured reference-white calibration.
- Sharpness: Excessive sharpness creates bright outlines, ringing around text and exaggerated compression noise. Start low and inspect fine lettering and diagonal edges.
- Noise reduction: It can soften a poor broadcast or heavily compressed stream, but may remove fine texture from high-quality HD and 4K sources. Use it only when the source noise is visible.
- Gradation clear and similar processing: These can make banding or uneven gradients less distracting, but additional processing may alter subtle texture. Compare skies, walls and studio backgrounds before keeping the change.
Begin with a movie-oriented mode’s defaults, change the smallest number of controls necessary, and note what you changed. If the result becomes difficult to track, use Restore Defaults for the current picture mode where that option is present, then start again.

TCL may label motion controls Motion, Motion Smoothing, Judder Reduction, Motion Clarity or Clear LED Motion, depending on the model. The same television can apply different motion behavior in Movie, Sports and other presets.
For films and scripted shows
Play a familiar camera pan or dialogue scene. If movement looks unnaturally smooth, as though it were captured on a video camera, reduce Judder Reduction or Motion Smoothing. Compare the scene at each step rather than judging from a paused frame. Film-oriented modes generally aim to preserve the cadence intended by the content creator, but the preferred amount remains subjective.
For sports
Sports mode may apply more smoothing to make fast action easier to follow. Watch a ball, puck or player crossing the screen and check for trails, warping around moving objects and flicker. Keep the extra processing if it improves your viewing, or lower it if the picture becomes artificial.
For games
Use the game-oriented option when available and confirm that motion processing has not introduced distracting artifacts or delayed controls. Evaluate an actual game, not just a console menu, because fast camera movement and fine text reveal different problems.

7. Configure every input separately
TCL documents applying picture adjustments to the current input or to all inputs. The safest approach is to configure each source deliberately.
- Play representative content from the built-in app, antenna or HDMI device you want to correct.
- Open the picture settings and note whether the menu offers Current input or All inputs.
- Choose Current input when you want a console, disc player or set-top box to retain a different mode.
- Choose All inputs only when you have verified that the same look is suitable for every source.
- Repeat the check after switching between SDR and HDR, because the TV may maintain separate mode memories.
For example, a sharpness level that is acceptable for a soft broadcast can add halos to a high-quality HDMI player. Likewise, motion that helps live sports may be distracting in a film app. Input-specific setup prevents one compromise from being imposed everywhere.
8. A practical setup sequence
Use this order so that broad mode changes do not invalidate later fine adjustments.
- Identify the model and source. Confirm the full model number and whether you are watching an app, broadcast or HDMI device.
- Open the correct menu. On the QM8K, use Settings > All settings > Display & Sound; consult the exact model guide if your labels differ.
- Select a baseline mode. Try FILMMAKER MODE or Movie for films, then compare a brighter or Sports mode only when your content or room calls for it.
- Correct unexpected dimness. On 2025 QM6K, QM7K and QM8K sets, test a mode other than energy-saving Standard before changing multiple luminance controls.
- Set brightness and contrast. Use dark and bright reference scenes; preserve shadow and highlight texture.
- Evaluate HDR controls. While HDR is playing, adjust Dynamic Tone Mapping, Local Contrast and Peak Luminance separately and modestly.
- Trim color and clarity. Keep Tint centered unless needed, avoid excessive Sharpness, and add noise reduction only for visibly noisy material.
- Set motion. Compare a familiar film pan, sports sequence or game. Reduce smoothing when the image looks unnaturally fluid.
- Apply to the intended inputs. Select Current input or All inputs deliberately, then repeat for other sources.
- Reset if necessary. Use Restore Defaults for the affected picture mode when you can no longer tell which change caused a problem.
9. Troubleshooting common results
The TV is dim only in one app or device
Switch inputs and compare the same type of content. If only one source is affected, revisit that input’s picture mode and HDR state. Check whether the source device is outputting HDR or a different range than expected, then configure that input rather than changing every input.
Blacks look gray
Check Black Level, Brightness and Gamma one at a time in a dark scene. Excessive overall brightness or an unsuitable black-level setting can lift the entire shadow floor. Avoid compensating by pushing contrast or peak luminance, which addresses different parts of the image.

Bright objects have halos
Compare Local Contrast and Peak Luminance settings around subtitles, stars and white text on black. Reducing the more aggressive setting may restore a cleaner transition, although the exact control behavior depends on the model and firmware.
Faces look orange or cartoonish
Lower Color saturation or return Tint and Color temperature toward the selected mode’s defaults. Verify the effect on several scenes; a single badly mastered source can mislead you.
Motion looks like a soap opera
Reduce Motion Smoothing or Judder Reduction and replay the same camera pan. If sports then looks less clear, use a separate Sports mode rather than keeping heavy smoothing for every kind of content.

10. What “best picture” means on a TCL Mini-LED
The best setup is a controlled compromise between accuracy, comfort and content. Movie or FILMMAKER MODE is a defensible starting point for films; a brighter preset may be more usable in a sunlit room; additional motion processing can help sports; and restrained tone mapping can preserve HDR detail better than maximum brightness.
TCL’s QM8 product material mentions up to 2,300 local dimming zones for that product context. That figure should not be generalized to every TCL Mini-LED television or treated as an independent measurement. More zones and higher claimed brightness do not remove the need to judge blooming, shadow detail, color and motion on your own model.
Because TCL does not publish one universal numeric recipe across its Mini-LED generations, the reliable method is to establish a sensible mode, adjust one control at a time with representative content, and save the result for each source that needs it.
