Only after testing the games you actually play should you raise resolution or change per-game graphics options. Steam Machine has display and storage headroom for demanding setups, but no single preset or frame-rate target is best for every game, TV or monitor.
What you need before turning on Steam Machine
Have the following ready before starting the first-run flow:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- A TV or monitor with an available HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 input.
- A Steam Controller connected by USB, or a third-party gamepad connected by USB for setup. A mouse and keyboard also work.
- Internet access through Wi-Fi or Ethernet and your Steam account credentials.
- The display cable you intend to use. For initial troubleshooting, connect Steam Machine directly to the TV or monitor rather than through a receiver, soundbar, switch, dock or adapter.
Steam Machine supports Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and Gigabit Ethernet. Those are connection options, not guarantees of a particular rendering performance or frame rate.
Connect the display correctly
Choose HDMI or DisplayPort
Use HDMI 2.0 when your television is the target display or when your monitor is already set up for HDMI. Use DisplayPort 1.4 when the monitor and cable support it and you need the capabilities of that connector. The product specifications list these maximum port outputs:
#1 Best Overall

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
| Output | Published port capability | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI 2.0 | Up to 4K at 120 Hz | It does not promise that every game renders at 4K/120. |
| DisplayPort 1.4 | Up to 4K at 240 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz | It does not promise that demanding games sustain those settings. |
Gaming Mode currently supports one display at a time. DisplayPort can be the sole output; when both connectors are present, HDMI is the default output for Gaming Mode. Disconnect additional displays while establishing a baseline so that the system, cable and display path are easy to diagnose.
Use the right DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter
If the display has HDMI but the machine is connected through DisplayPort, Valve supports an active DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter or cable. Passive adapters are unsupported. If you see no picture, remove the adapter and test a direct HDMI connection first, or replace a passive adapter with an active one.
Complete the first-run setup
- Connect one display and power on. Attach the cable directly to the television or monitor and select the matching input on the display.
- Connect an input device. Connect a Steam Controller by USB for the initial flow. A third-party gamepad can also be connected over USB. A mouse and keyboard are alternatives for navigating setup.
- Join your network. Follow the on-screen network prompts to connect over Wi-Fi. If the machine is near your router or switch and wireless reliability is questionable, connect the Gigabit Ethernet port instead.
- Sign in to Steam. Complete the account prompts in Gaming Mode. Do not start performance troubleshooting until sign-in and the basic interface are working.
- Allow the setup to finish. Keep the input device connected until the first-run process ends. Afterward, a third-party controller can be paired over Bluetooth if you prefer wireless use.
A controller, mouse or keyboard is required to complete this process. Bluetooth pairing is useful after setup, but the USB route is the one Valve explicitly describes for the initial Steam Controller flow.

Machine hardware update
Open Settings > System > Hardware Updates and apply available machine updates. A restart may be required before a display or peripheral test is meaningful.
Controller and wireless-accessory updates
Open Settings > Controller to update the Steam Controller, puck and wireless adapter when updates are offered. If an accessory behaves inconsistently, restart the machine and the accessory after updating.
When troubleshooting, remove unnecessary USB devices, hubs and adapters. Fewer variables make it easier to determine whether the problem is caused by the machine, the display path or a peripheral.
Start with the 1080p baseline
Steam Machine uses 1080p as the system default game resolution. Valve describes that default as the out-of-the-box target for a good gameplay experience and also uses 1080p for Steam Machine Verified testing. This makes it the most useful starting point even if your television or monitor has a higher native resolution.
Leave the default in place for the first games you test. Play long enough to observe the titles that matter to you, including demanding scenes rather than only menus or opening areas. Then change one variable at a time:

- Weatherproof & UV Resistant: Outdoor-rated Cat8 Ethernet cable with UV-resistant PVC jacket; withstands direct sunlight, extreme cold, humidity, and hot weather; anti-aging and durable; Includes 18-month support.
- Raise the system or game resolution only when you want a sharper image and the title remains responsive.
- Change a game’s own graphics options separately from the global display setting.
- After each change, revisit the same demanding scene so you can tell whether the change helped or hurt.
Resolution can be changed globally through Settings > Display or per game in that game’s settings. A higher output resolution can reduce performance; the result depends on the title, its graphics defaults and the rest of its settings. The product page’s maximum-output figures describe connector capability, not a universal promise that every game will run at 4K or 8K at a preferred frame rate.
Use a repeatable per-game performance process
1. Establish the game’s default behavior
Launch the game at 1080p with its initial settings. Check loading, menus, ordinary play and the most visually complex area you regularly encounter. This gives you a reference before making changes.
2. Decide whether resolution or detail matters more
If the image is soft on a large screen, try a higher resolution first and test the same scene. If the game becomes less responsive, return to 1080p and adjust the game’s own quality options instead. Do not assume that a display’s native resolution is automatically the fastest or best-looking choice.
3. Change one setting at a time
Keep a simple note of the previous value, change one option, and replay the same section. This avoids attributing an improvement to the wrong setting and makes it easy to return to a known-good configuration.
4. Keep a stable baseline for comparisons
Use the same display, cable, output and scene while comparing settings. Switching between HDMI and DisplayPort, changing the TV’s picture mode and changing game options at the same time can hide the cause of a performance difference.

5. Treat “Verified” as a starting reference, not a promise for every setup
Valve’s 1080p Steam Machine Verified testing target explains why 1080p is a sensible baseline. It does not establish one frame-rate guarantee for every game, display mode or user configuration.
Configure one-display Gaming Mode
Gaming Mode is currently a single-display experience. If you normally use two monitors, unplug the secondary display while testing. Choose the connector that best matches your screen, then leave the output path unchanged while tuning a game.
When the screen is blank
- Confirm the television or monitor is set to the input used by Steam Machine.
- Disconnect receivers, soundbars, switches, docks and adapters, then connect directly to the display.
- Try a direct HDMI connection if available.
- If you must use DisplayPort-to-HDMI, verify that the adapter or cable is active; passive adapters are unsupported.
- Restart the machine and display after changing the cable or input.
Tune HDR and picture quality as a system
A sharp, accurate picture depends on three layers: Steam Machine’s display settings, the TV or monitor’s input settings and the game’s own image controls. There is no single combination that is best for every panel.
Steam Machine display controls
Steam Machine’s Advanced display options include HDR, SDR brightness, color temperature and RGB output range. Change these only after the basic 1080p image is working. Record the original values so you can undo a change.
Recommended Free Tools
TV or monitor controls
The display may expose separate controls for HDMI format, color depth, RGB range, black level and image processing. The names differ by manufacturer and model. If the machine is set to a full RGB range while the display expects a limited range, blacks can look crushed; the reverse mismatch can make blacks look gray. Set the machine and display to matching ranges.

Game HDR calibration
Many games include their own HDR calibration. Run that calibration after selecting the display’s HDR mode and after matching RGB range and black level. If the result is worse, disable HDR at the game or system level and compare against the SDR baseline rather than changing several controls at once.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose wired or wireless networking for reliability
Steam Machine includes Gigabit Ethernet and 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E. Wi-Fi is convenient and may be entirely adequate when the signal is strong and stable. Ethernet is useful when the machine is close to a router or switch, when wireless interference causes disconnects, or when you want to remove wireless variability while downloading and updating games.
An Ethernet cable does not upgrade the graphics processor and is not a frame-rate tweak. The official specifications support it as a networking option; they do not claim that wired networking improves rendering performance or FPS. If online play or downloads are unreliable, first verify the network connection, then try Ethernet where practical.
For network-specific failures, use Valve’s network troubleshooting guidance. Restart the machine and network equipment after changing connection methods, and test again before changing display or game settings.
Understand the hardware headroom without overpromising performance
The Steam Machine product specifications list two NVMe SSD configurations, 512GB and 2TB, and both include microSD expansion. System memory is listed as 16GB DDR5 plus 8GB GDDR6 VRAM. Storage capacity affects how many games and updates you can keep installed; it is not a direct guarantee of higher frame rates.
| Specification | Published value | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Internal storage | 512GB or 2TB NVMe SSD | Choose based on your installed library; both configurations support microSD expansion. |
| System memory | 16GB DDR5 | Supports the operating system and game workloads; no universal FPS figure is stated. |
| Graphics memory | 8GB GDDR6 VRAM | Provides dedicated video memory; game performance still varies by title and settings. |
| Wireless | 2×2 Wi-Fi 6E; Bluetooth 5.3 | Enables wireless networking and accessory pairing where signal and compatibility permit. |
| Wired network | Gigabit Ethernet | Offers a wired connection when stability or room layout favors it. |
| Display outputs | HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 | Use one output in Gaming Mode; maximum port rates are not game-performance guarantees. |
Valve’s product page also uses a “more than six times the horsepower of Steam Deck” comparison. That marketing statement is not an independent benchmark and cannot be converted into a predicted frame rate for a particular game.
Troubleshoot in the order that removes the most variables
| Symptom | Actions |
|---|---|
| No picture | Check the display input, use one display, connect directly, test HDMI, and replace any passive DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter with an active one. |
| Controller unavailable during setup | Connect the Steam Controller by USB. For a third-party gamepad, use USB during setup, then pair Bluetooth after setup is complete. |
| Controller or wireless accessory behaves erratically | Install updates at Settings > Controller, restart the accessory and machine, and remove unnecessary peripherals. |
| Game performance is disappointing | Return to 1080p, test the same demanding scene, then change one in-game option at a time. Do not infer a universal result from another game. |
| HDR image looks washed out or too dark | Check HDR, SDR brightness, RGB range and black-level settings on both Steam Machine and the display, then run the game’s HDR calibration or compare with SDR. |
| Downloads or online play are unstable | Restart the machine and network equipment, review network troubleshooting guidance, and test Gigabit Ethernet if a wired route is practical. |
Apply SteamOS and hardware updates before repeating any of these tests. A changed software or firmware version can alter the result, so note which settings and connection path produced a working baseline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical first-session checklist
- One TV or monitor connected directly by HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4.
- One input device connected, with the Steam Controller on USB for initial setup.
- Network joined and Steam account signed in.
- SteamOS updates installed from Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Machine hardware updates installed from Settings > System > Hardware Updates.
- Controller, puck and wireless-adapter updates checked at Settings > Controller.
- 1080p retained as the initial game-resolution baseline.
- Display HDR, RGB range, black level and game HDR calibration changed only after the baseline works.
- Ethernet considered for connection reliability, not as a graphics upgrade.
This sequence gives you a known-good configuration. From there, optimize for the games and display you actually use, measuring each resolution or graphics change against that baseline rather than chasing a specification maximum.
