After pairing, choose your PC in the headset dashboard and select Stream on a game. SteamVR runs on the computer; you do not install the desktop SteamVR runtime as a separate app on the headset.
The same headset can run standalone VR and non-VR software, but its main PC feature is low-latency streaming from a Steam library. The steps below cover first boot, software updates, adapter pairing, controllers, launch options, Wi-Fi, Linux limitations and recovery when pairing fails.

What Steam Frame needs for PC VR
Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone SteamOS virtual-reality headset designed primarily to stream a player’s Steam Library from a PC. It also supports standalone VR and non-VR experiences, SteamVR and OpenXR, Windows and Linux PC titles, native ARM64 software and Android APKs. Streaming therefore uses two systems: Steam and SteamVR on the host computer, and the Steam Frame client in the headset.

Have these items ready
- Steam Frame and its controllers.
- A power adapter rated for at least 27 W. Valve recommends 45 W.
- A local network connection for first-boot sign-in and updates.
- A PC with the desktop Steam client and SteamVR installed.
- The included dedicated wireless adapter and an available USB 3 port on the PC.
- The same Steam account signed in on the headset and the host computer.
The dedicated adapter is the connection Valve uses in its primary setup procedure. A home Wi-Fi path is available, but Valve cautions that it is generally more congested and less reliable.
Step 1: Power on and complete first boot
Steam Frame ships in a special mode that requires external power before it can be set up. Do not begin by relying on battery power alone.
- Connect a power adapter rated at least 27 W. Use a 45 W adapter when available, as recommended by Valve.
- Press the headset’s power button.
- Follow the in-headset prompts and allow the initial update to finish.
- Let the headset reboot when the update requests it.
- Sign in to your Steam account after the reboot.
Interrupting the update or removing power during the first boot can leave the setup incomplete. If the headset appears stuck, connect the recommended-power adapter, wait for the device to respond, and restart it before attempting software troubleshooting.
Step 2: Connect to a local network and update Steam Frame
The first setup uses a local network to authenticate your Steam account and download updates. Connect the headset to the network shown by the setup wizard, complete sign-in, and leave the device connected while updates are checked.
- Open Steam Settings > System > Updates in the headset.
- Install every available headset update.
- Allow the headset to reboot if prompted.
- After rebooting, return to the same page and confirm that no update remains pending.
A local network is also useful for recovery: both the headset and PC should be online and signed in before you try to pair the dedicated adapter. The adapter itself becomes the preferred PC streaming path later; it does not replace the network connection required for initial account setup and downloads.

Step 3: Put Steam Frame, Steam and SteamVR on current software
Valve’s current setup documentation recommends beta branches for the headset, desktop Steam and SteamVR so that all three components receive the latest compatibility changes. Beta software can change more frequently than stable releases, so use the same choice consistently across the components when following Valve’s setup path.
Enable the Steam Frame beta channel
- In the headset, open Steam Settings > System > System Update Channel.
- Select Beta.
- Install any update offered and reboot if requested.
Enable the desktop Steam beta
- On the host PC, open the desktop Steam client.
- Open Steam Settings > Interface.
- Set Client Beta Participation to Steam Beta Update.
- Allow Steam to restart and finish its client update.
Enable the SteamVR beta
- In the desktop Steam client, open the Library.
- Find SteamVR, open its gear menu and choose Properties.
- Open Betas.
- Select SteamVR Beta Update and let Steam install it.
Restart the PC after these updates. A reboot is particularly important before pairing because it gives the desktop client a clean opportunity to install the wireless-adapter driver.

Step 4: Install and pair the dedicated wireless adapter
Valve’s setup instruction is to connect the included adapter directly to the computer, preferably through a USB 3 port, then launch SteamVR and accept its driver-install prompt.
- Plug the included wireless adapter into a USB 3 port on the host PC. Prefer a port on the computer rather than an unpowered hub.
- Start SteamVR from the desktop Steam client.
- Accept the prompt to install the adapter driver.
- In SteamVR, choose Pair when the pairing control appears.
- Put on Steam Frame and use its virtual keyboard to enter the pairing code shown in the headset.
- Wait for the desktop client and headset to confirm the connection.
If the adapter is hard to position near the play area, a USB 3.0 extension cable can help place it near a suitable port. Keep the adapter on a USB 3 connection and avoid moving it between ports while a session is active; changing ports can cause the driver to be rediscovered.
What the pairing code does
The code links that physical adapter to the headset and the Steam session running on the PC. It is not a Steam account password. Enter the code displayed for the current pairing attempt, and repeat the process if you restart the headset and receive a new code.

Step 5: Start a PC VR game from Steam Frame
Once the adapter is paired, the headset dashboard can start SteamVR on the host computer. Valve supports launching SteamVR directly from the PC, but describes that route mainly for development. For ordinary play, begin with a game in the headset’s Steam library.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open the Steam menu in the headset’s VR dashboard.
- Select the name of the paired PC.
- Wait for SteamVR to launch on that computer.
- Open the Steam library in the headset.
- Select a VR game and choose Stream.
The Stream command tells Steam Frame to run the game through the host PC and send the VR output to the headset. It is different from installing a standalone build on the headset. A game must still support the host operating system and the VR runtime it uses.
When direct SteamVR launching makes sense
Starting SteamVR from the PC is useful for development, diagnostics or testing a headset connection before choosing a game. For a normal gaming session, selecting the PC in the headset and then using Stream keeps the launch flow inside the headset and lets Steam identify the available library.
Step 6: Pair the controllers
Steam Frame controllers generally pair automatically when they are switched on. Give them a moment after the headset connects before starting manual pairing.
Automatic pairing
- Turn on both controllers.
- Keep them near the headset while the PC session starts.
- Check that each controller appears in the VR dashboard.
Manual pairing
- Open VR Settings > Controllers > Pair Controllers in the headset.
- On one controller, hold the Steam button and the thin top View/Menu button together.
- Keep holding until the controller beeps.
- Select Pair in the headset.
- Repeat the same process for the second controller.
Pair each controller separately. If one is recognized and the other is not, repeat the manual process only for the missing controller rather than resetting the whole headset.

Connection methods compared
Steam Frame offers more than one way to reach a PC library, but the choices are not equivalent for reliability or support.
| Connection | How it starts | Reliability and congestion | Host-system notes | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Included dedicated wireless adapter | USB 3 connection, SteamVR driver installation, then headset code pairing | Valve’s preferred direct path; generally less congested and more reliable than home Wi-Fi | Requires the adapter driver and a suitable USB 3 port | Regular PC VR gaming |
| Home Wi-Fi | Connect the headset and PC to the local network and use the available streaming option | Available, but Valve says it tends to be more congested and less reliable than the dedicated adapter | Performance depends on the existing local network | Situations where the adapter cannot be used |
| Linux host with wireless dongle | Same adapter pairing flow, with the Linux software prerequisites | May have performance or compatibility problems; full support is not established | Steam Support says shipped wireless-dongle use requires SteamOS 3.9+ or Linux kernel 7.2+ | Linux users willing to work within current limitations |
| Direct SteamVR launch from PC | Start SteamVR on the desktop instead of selecting a streamed game first | Uses the same underlying PC link; launch flow is less focused on normal play | Valve describes it primarily for development | Development and diagnostics |
Windows and Linux considerations
Windows
Windows is the straightforward host path described by the normal Steam and SteamVR workflow: update the desktop client, update SteamVR, connect the adapter to USB 3, accept the driver prompt and pair the code. The game itself still needs to support the PC’s hardware and the chosen VR runtime.
Linux
Steam Frame can work with Linux PC titles, but Linux streaming is not fully supported on Steam Machine and desktop Linux at the time of Valve’s current support guidance. Users can encounter performance or compatibility issues even when the headset and adapter pair successfully.
For shipped wireless-dongle Linux use, Steam Support specifies SteamOS 3.9 or newer, or Linux kernel 7.2 or newer. Verify the host version before troubleshooting the headset. If your system is below those levels, update the operating system or kernel first; changing headset settings will not supply the missing host support.
Troubleshooting pairing and launch failures
The pairing prompt never appears
- Confirm the desktop Steam client is on the beta branch: Steam Settings > Interface > Client Beta Participation > Steam Beta Update.
- Reboot the PC so the adapter driver can install cleanly.
- Restart Steam Frame.
- Check that the headset and PC use the same Steam account.
- Install all pending headset, Steam client and SteamVR updates.
After the restart, launch SteamVR again and wait for its driver prompt before selecting Pair. If the prompt still does not appear, disconnect the adapter, reboot the PC, reconnect it to another USB 3 port and repeat the SteamVR launch.

The adapter is connected but the headset cannot see the PC
- Verify that SteamVR is running on the host rather than only the desktop Steam client.
- Make sure the adapter is in a USB 3 port and is not behind a problematic hub.
- Confirm that the pairing code was entered in the headset for the current attempt.
- Restart SteamVR and the headset before trying to pair again.
- Check that both devices are signed in to the same Steam account.
SteamVR opens, but no game streams
- Open the Steam menu in the headset dashboard.
- Select the paired PC by name.
- Return to the headset library.
- Choose the game and select Stream, rather than looking for a standalone installation.
If the game still does not start, check its operating-system and VR-runtime requirements on the host PC. A successful headset pairing confirms the link, not that every title is compatible.
Controllers do not respond
Turn both controllers on and wait for automatic pairing. If one remains missing, use VR Settings > Controllers > Pair Controllers, hold the Steam and thin top View/Menu buttons until the controller beeps, and select Pair. Repeat for the other controller if necessary.
Streaming is unstable over Wi-Fi
Valve explicitly characterizes home Wi-Fi as more congested and less reliable than the dedicated adapter. Move PC streaming to the included adapter when possible. If Wi-Fi is your only option, reduce competing traffic on the local network and keep the headset and PC on the same local network; these are practical network measures, not a replacement for the adapter’s direct link.
Keeping the setup dependable
- Leave the adapter in a known USB 3 port once it is paired.
- Use the 45 W power recommendation when choosing a charger for first boot and updates.
- Check Steam Frame, desktop Steam and SteamVR for updates before diagnosing a new pairing problem.
- Restart the headset, controllers and host SteamVR together after a failed connection, as Steam Support recommends.
- Use the headset library’s Stream action for normal play; reserve direct desktop SteamVR launching for development or diagnosis.
- On Linux, confirm SteamOS 3.9+ or kernel 7.2+ before investigating game-specific behavior.
Final setup checklist
- Power Steam Frame with at least 27 W; 45 W is recommended.
- Complete the first-boot update, reboot and Steam sign-in.
- Connect to a local network and install headset updates.
- Enable the recommended beta channels on the headset, desktop Steam and SteamVR.
- Update the desktop client and reboot the PC.
- Connect the included adapter to USB 3 and accept the SteamVR driver prompt.
- Choose Pair and enter the headset’s current code.
- Select the PC in the headset’s Steam dashboard.
- Choose Stream on the game you want to play.
- Let controllers auto-pair, or use the documented manual pairing sequence if needed.
With those steps complete, Steam Frame acts as a wireless SteamVR display and controller system for the host PC while retaining its own standalone SteamOS capabilities. The dedicated adapter is the most dependable general-purpose PC link in Valve’s instructions; Wi-Fi remains a fallback, and Linux requires attention to the current version limits.
