Connect the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC socket to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) port, enable HDMI control and ARC/eARC on the TV, then select the soundbar’s TV input. On Sony’s HT-A5000, Dolby Atmos reaches the bar through its HDMI input or the TV’s eARC connection; ordinary TV ARC and optical are not Atmos paths for that model. This guide uses the HT-A5000 as a documented Sony 5.1.2 example, but menu names and capabilities differ across Sony soundbars and televisions.
What this setup covers
Sony uses “5.1.2” to describe a system with five main audio channels, one low-frequency effects channel and two height channels. The HT-A5000 product page identifies that model as a 5.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundbar. It is a useful reference for the connections below, not a claim that every Sony soundbar has the same ports or format support.

The soundbar can work by itself. Compatible optional rear speakers such as SA-RS3S or SA-RS5 are an expansion for Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping feature, not a requirement for connecting the bar to a television. Sony says the bar needs the required software update before those speakers can be used. Check the HT-A5000 support and manuals page or your own model’s support page before following model-specific instructions.
Prepare the ports, cable and settings
Find the correct HDMI sockets
- On the television, locate the HDMI input explicitly marked ARC or eARC. A regular HDMI input will not return TV audio to the soundbar.
- On the HT-A5000, use HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC). Do not use the bar’s HDMI IN for the television connection.
- Use the HDMI cable supplied with the HT-A5000 for the TV link, and push both connectors fully into their sockets. A loose connection can leave the TV picture working while sound fails.
Have the TV and soundbar manuals available
Sony’s television menu labels and paths vary by model, region and software version. The required settings are generally called Control for HDMI and ARC or eARC, but the exact location must come from the television’s manual. Sony’s general Dolby Atmos guidance also stresses that the source, TV passthrough and sound system must all support the intended format; see its Dolby Atmos playback guidance.

Connect the soundbar to the TV
- Turn off the TV and soundbar. This is not mandatory for HDMI, but it makes it easier for the devices to renegotiate their audio connection cleanly.
- Connect the supplied HDMI cable. Plug one end into the television’s ARC/eARC-labeled HDMI input and the other into the HT-A5000’s HDMI OUT (TV eARC/ARC) jack. Sony’s connection guide requires this specific TV-return connection.
- Enable HDMI control on the TV. Turn on the television’s Control for HDMI (sometimes called HDMI-CEC) function. Sony warns that TV sound will not be output through the speaker system when this control is disabled.
- Enable ARC or eARC on the TV. If the TV presents separate ARC and eARC choices, enable eARC when both the TV and soundbar support it. Use the TV manual for the exact menu path.
- Set the HT-A5000 HDMI options. On the soundbar, open Setup → Advanced Settings → HDMI Settings → Control for HDMI and choose On. Set TV Audio Input Mode to Auto. If the television does not support eARC, Sony instructs you to set the bar’s eARC setting to Off.
- Select TV on the soundbar. Switch the bar to its TV input, start a TV programme or app, raise the volume and make sure mute is off. The television should now send its audio over the HDMI return channel.
The detailed HT-A5000 procedure and connection diagrams are in Sony’s TV ARC/eARC connection guide. A different Sony model may use a different menu name or include additional audio-output choices, so do not copy the HT-A5000 path blindly.
Connect a Blu-ray player, set-top box or console
You have two valid wiring routes. Choose between them based on the TV’s passthrough capabilities, the video format you need and the audio format you want the soundbar to receive.
Route A: source into the soundbar
- Connect the player, set-top box or console to the HT-A5000’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the soundbar to the TV using the ARC/eARC connection described above.
- On the soundbar, select the HDMI input when using that device.
- Set the source’s audio output to a compatible bitstream or Dolby Atmos mode rather than forcing stereo or PCM, when those options are available.
This route sends the source’s audio directly to the bar and is useful when the television cannot pass the desired audio format. The source-device wiring and settings are documented in Sony’s HT-A5000 source connection guide.

Route B: source into an eARC-capable TV
- Connect the source to a suitable HDMI input on the television.
- Leave the TV and soundbar linked through their ARC/eARC sockets.
- Enable eARC and HDMI control on the TV, then choose the source’s HDMI input on the television.
- Use the soundbar’s TV input so the TV returns the source audio over eARC.
Sony states that an eARC-capable TV can return high-quality audio from a connected source. This route is convenient when the TV has enough bandwidth and passthrough support for the source’s video and audio. If the TV cannot pass the desired format, move the source to the soundbar’s HDMI IN instead.
Compare the available connection paths
| Connection path | How to select it on the HT-A5000 | Dolby Atmos status for HT-A5000 | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Source → soundbar HDMI IN | HDMI input | Sony’s supported-format table lists Dolby Atmos | Use when the TV cannot pass the source’s Atmos signal or when you want the shortest audio path. |
| Source → TV → eARC → soundbar | TV input | Sony’s table lists Dolby Atmos over TV eARC | Use when the TV supports eARC passthrough for the source and its video format. |
| Source → TV → ARC → soundbar | TV input | Dolby Atmos is not listed for TV ARC on this model | Suitable for compatible TV audio formats, but not the HT-A5000 Atmos route. |
| TV or source → optical → soundbar | Optical input, if fitted and selected | Dolby Atmos is not listed for optical on this model | Fallback TV audio when ARC/eARC is unavailable; it does not provide Atmos. |
The format distinctions come from Sony’s HT-A5000 supported audio formats table. They are not a universal rule for every Sony soundbar. For another model, consult its own supported-format list before choosing a wiring route.
Configure the TV and source for Atmos playback
A Dolby Atmos logo on the soundbar cannot create Atmos from a stereo signal. The programme or disc must contain an Atmos track, the player or app must be allowed to output it, and every device in the path must pass the format.

- Choose an Atmos-labelled title. Streaming services and discs identify Atmos availability separately from ordinary 5.1 audio. If the title has no Atmos track, the soundbar will use another supported format.
- Set the source to bitstream or its Atmos output mode. Menu names differ by player and console. Avoid a forced stereo setting. If the device offers “pass-through,” enable it when the TV or soundbar is handling decoding.
- Set the TV’s digital-audio output appropriately. For a source connected to the TV, choose an automatic, bitstream or pass-through option when available rather than PCM stereo. The exact label is model-dependent.
- Confirm the eARC link when using Route B. The TV must have eARC enabled and must support passthrough of both the source’s video format and its audio format. A TV can support 4K video yet still limit audio passthrough, so check its manual.
- Select the correct soundbar input. Choose HDMI for a source plugged into the bar; choose TV for TV apps or a source returned over eARC.
For the HT-A5000, Sony lists Atmos over its HDMI input and TV eARC, but not over TV ARC or optical. That means replacing an optical cable with another ordinary HDMI socket does not automatically solve an Atmos problem: the socket must be the TV’s ARC/eARC port, and the source and settings must also qualify.
Place the bar and run calibration
Put the soundbar in front of the TV with its upward-firing speakers unobstructed. Do not cover the top of the bar with a shelf, cloth or decorative panel; height-channel performance depends on sound reaching the room. Keep the front of the bar clear enough that its microphones and speakers are not blocked during setup.
After the bar and any optional rear speakers are in their final positions, run Sony’s Sound Field Optimization routine from the soundbar’s guided setup. Sony describes this process as calibrating the system to the listening environment. If you later move the bar or rear speakers, run the optimization again so the measured distances and levels match the new layout.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For expanded surround coverage, Sony lists SA-RS3S and SA-RS5 as compatible rear-speaker options for 360 Spatial Sound Mapping when the soundbar has the required software update. They are optional accessories; the HDMI TV connection and the HT-A5000’s basic 5.1.2 operation do not depend on them.

The TV shows a picture but the soundbar is silent
Work through these checks in order:
- Verify that the cable is in the TV’s socket marked ARC or eARC, not an unmarked HDMI input.
- Confirm Control for HDMI is enabled on both the TV and the soundbar.
- Confirm the TV’s ARC/eARC function is enabled and the HT-A5000’s TV Audio Input Mode is set to Auto.
- Switch the soundbar to TV, raise its volume and clear mute.
- Unplug and firmly reseat both HDMI connectors.
- Power off the TV and soundbar, wait briefly, then turn them on again so the HDMI handshake is rebuilt.
These are Sony’s recommended checks for a missing TV signal. If the TV’s own apps work but a device connected to the TV is silent, connect that device temporarily to the soundbar’s HDMI IN and select HDMI. If sound returns, the TV is probably not passing that source’s audio format over its return channel.
The source has sound, but not Atmos
- Check that the title or disc actually carries Dolby Atmos and that the source device is not locked to stereo.
- Check which route you used. On the HT-A5000, Atmos is listed for HDMI IN and TV eARC, not TV ARC or optical.
- If the source is connected to the TV, verify that the TV supports eARC passthrough for that source’s audio format. Move the source to the soundbar’s HDMI IN if the TV cannot pass it.
- Review the TV’s digital-audio output and the source’s bitstream or pass-through setting. A PCM or stereo conversion upstream prevents an Atmos stream from reaching the bar.
- Match the cable and the source’s HDMI Signal Format setting to the video format being sent. Sony’s source guide notes that both the cable and this setting must suit the source format.
The connection drops or changes inputs
Recheck that HDMI control is enabled consistently. Mixed HDMI-control settings can prevent reliable input switching and power synchronization. Reseat the cable, restart both devices and test with the source connected directly to the soundbar. If the problem occurs only with one source, inspect that device’s HDMI output mode and the TV’s passthrough settings rather than changing the soundbar’s speaker layout.

What eARC changes—and what it does not
eARC is the higher-capacity audio-return option in this setup. It can carry formats that a particular TV may not pass over ordinary ARC, which is why Sony lists Dolby Atmos for the HT-A5000’s TV eARC input but not its TV ARC input. However, eARC does not override the limits of the TV, source, content or soundbar. The TV must support the desired passthrough mode, the source must output that format, and the soundbar must list it as supported.
Likewise, a cable being labelled HDMI does not guarantee Atmos. The relevant factors are the actual ports being used, the devices’ supported formats, the selected HDMI Signal Format and the source settings. When a different Sony model is involved, use that model’s manual and supported-format table instead of assuming the HT-A5000’s behavior.
Model-specific limits to keep in mind
- Soundbar model: The instructions and format table above are documented for the HT-A5000. Other Sony soundbars may have different HDMI inputs, menu paths or Atmos support.
- TV model: Sony television menus vary. Look for the ARC/eARC and HDMI-control settings in the TV’s own manual.
- Source device: A player, console or set-top box can downmix audio even when the soundbar is capable of Atmos.
- Content: Atmos is available only when the programme, disc or game provides an Atmos soundtrack and the service or player is permitted to deliver it.
- Optional speakers: Rear speakers and 360 Spatial Sound Mapping expand the system but are not prerequisites for the basic TV connection.
Once the ARC/eARC link is correctly wired, HDMI control and audio-return settings are enabled, and the source is delivering a supported Atmos track, select the matching soundbar input and play the content. If any one of those conditions is missing, the system can still produce sound, but it may fall back to a lower format or remain silent.
