Set up Beam (Gen 2) in the current Sonos app for iOS or Android first, then connect it to your TV’s HDMI ARC port. If your TV has no ARC port, use the included optical adapter—but optical does not support Dolby Atmos, CEC, or voice control of the TV.
Before you start
- Install the current Sonos app on an iOS or Android device.
- Place Beam where you want it and connect it to power.
- Keep the included HDMI cable and optical audio adapter nearby. The app will guide you through choosing the appropriate connection.
Beam (Gen 2) must be set up in the Sonos app before it can play TV audio. Sonos provides the Beam setup instructions.

Set up Beam in the Sonos app
If you are setting up a new Sonos system
- Open the Sonos app and choose the option to set up a speaker or component.
- Create a Sonos account or sign in to an existing one when prompted.
- When Beam appears, select Add and follow the app’s instructions.
If you already have a Sonos system
- Open the Sonos app and go to Settings.
- Choose Add Speaker or Component, select Beam when it appears, and follow the prompts.
The setup flow can also guide you through adding content services. Finish the app’s speaker setup before moving on to the TV connection.

Choose the right TV connection
Use HDMI ARC if your TV has an ARC-labeled port. Sonos supports HDMI eARC as well. If the TV has neither ARC nor eARC, connect it through the digital optical output using the included adapter.

Sonos lists Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD as supported Dolby Atmos formats for Beam (Gen 2); an HDMI ARC or eARC connection is required. See Sonos’s TV requirements for Sonos home theater speakers.
Connect Beam to the TV
- In the Sonos app, continue to the TV connection steps.
- For HDMI, connect the included HDMI cable to Beam and to the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port—not an ordinary HDMI input.
- If your TV has no ARC port, use the included optical adapter as directed by the app: connect the adapter to Beam and the optical cable to the TV’s digital optical output.
- Follow the remaining prompts in the app to complete the connection.
Fix detection and HDMI errors
“HDMI ARC not detected”
- Confirm the cable is connected to the TV’s HDMI ARC port.
- Turn on the TV and play a show or movie, then check detection again.
These are Sonos’s recommended checks for an error connecting a Sonos home theater product to a TV.

Optical connection shows no signal
- Check that the cable and included adapter are connected correctly between Beam and the TV’s digital optical output.
- Make sure the TV is on and actively playing content.
The app reports an HDMI CEC issue
- Enable the TV’s CEC-related setting. TV manufacturers may use different names for this feature.
- If the issue remains, disconnect other devices connected to the TV’s HDMI ports.
- Check whether Beam works, then reconnect the other devices one at a time to identify possible interference.

The app cannot find Beam during setup
Use Sonos’s dedicated Beam (Gen 2) Help and Support page to find the current troubleshooting instructions for a Beam that cannot be found during setup.

Use the correct Sonos app
Beam (Gen 2) is not compatible with the Sonos S1 Controller app. Set it up with the current Sonos app for iOS or Android. Sonos’s Beam (Gen 2) support page lists product help and setup resources.
