How to Set Up a SkyFactory 4 Server (Minecraft 1.12.2)

For the current SkyFactory multiplayer release, download the separate SkyFactory-4_Server_4_2_4.zip archive, run the Forge installation/start scripts it contains, accept Minecraft’s EULA, and have every player install the identical SkyFactory 4.2.4 client pack. SkyFactory 4 is a Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge pack, so Java compatibility, enough memory, and correct port forwarding matter more than they do for a vanilla server.

This guide covers a self-hosted server from first download through internet access, backups, updates, and failure recovery. Managed hosting is also compared for groups that do not want to maintain Java, networking, and an always-on machine.

What you are setting up

SkyFactory 4 is a modded Minecraft Java Edition pack built for Minecraft 1.12.2. CurseForge lists version 4.2.4 as the latest release, dated December 13, 2021; its project page metadata showed about 14.1 million downloads in 2026. The official server archive is named SkyFactory-4_Server_4_2_4.zip, is about 231.3 MB, and supports Minecraft 1.12.2.

The server archive is not the same file as the roughly 22 MB client modpack ZIP. The client download contains the files a player needs to launch the pack; the server archive contains Forge server files, scripts, configuration, and libraries needed to run a dedicated world. Downloading the wrong archive is the most common reason a new installation starts as vanilla or never creates the expected files.

A self-hosted installation consists of a Java runtime, the extracted server pack, a Forge process launched by the supplied scripts, a world directory, and a network path for players. The world is generated with SkyFactory’s settings, not with a normal vanilla server JAR.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting

Self-hosting costs no separate hosting subscription, but the computer must remain on whenever people want to play. You are responsible for Java and Forge maintenance, firewall and router changes, backups, recovery, and keeping the machine’s operating system secure. It gives you direct access to every file and lets you decide exactly when to change versions.

Managed SkyFactory 4 hosting puts the server on a provider’s machine. The provider’s workflow generally asks you to select a supported modpack or server pack, choose a plan and region, and then provisions the instance without manual router forwarding or file uploads. CurseForge’s hosted-server documentation describes this model and says that service is powered by a third-party host. Plans, regions, included backups, prices, and availability change, so verify those details at purchase time rather than relying on an old offer.

Decision point Self-hosted server Managed server
Initial setup Install compatible Java, extract the pack, run its scripts, accept the EULA, and configure networking. Choose a supported pack and plan; the provider provisions the machine.
File and update control Complete control over scripts, configs, backups, and update timing. Control depends on the host’s panel, file access, and supported-pack policy.
Recurring cost No hosting bill, but you provide hardware, electricity, storage, and your own backup destination. Monthly or other recurring plan cost; current pricing must be checked with the provider.
Networking You must allow and forward the Minecraft gameplay port; carrier-grade NAT may block forwarding. Public connectivity is normally supplied by the host, so home-router work is usually unnecessary.
Backups and recovery You design, schedule, test, and store backups yourself. Backup frequency, retention, and restore controls vary by plan; confirm them before purchase.
Uptime Depends on your power, internet connection, hardware, and maintenance. Depends on the provider’s infrastructure and the plan’s service terms.

Use self-hosting when you want control and already have a reliable machine. Use managed hosting when the group needs a server online without learning router administration or maintaining a legacy Forge installation.

Prepare the host machine

Use a compatible Java runtime

Minecraft 1.12.2 and its Forge stack are legacy software. The newest Java installed on a computer is not automatically compatible. Read the pack’s supplied instructions and inspect its installation/start scripts to see which Java executable and options they expect. On the host, run java -version and confirm that the command resolves to the runtime you intend to use. If several Java versions are installed, configure the script or operating-system path explicitly instead of assuming the default will work.

Java compatibility is a prerequisite, not a performance tweak. An incompatible runtime can stop the script before a world is created, produce class-loading errors, or cause Forge to fail during startup. Do not replace the pack’s launch method with a generic command copied from a vanilla-server tutorial until the supplied script has been understood.

Create a dedicated writable directory

Make a directory used only by this server, such as a folder under your home or games directory. Extract the complete server archive into it rather than running files from inside the ZIP. The account that runs the server needs permission to create libraries, logs, configuration files, and world saves. Avoid protected operating-system directories and cloud-synced folders that can lock or partially synchronize world files.

Leave room beyond the archive’s 231.3 MB download size. The generated world, dimensions, Forge libraries, logs, player data, backups, and automation-heavy builds can grow substantially. Keep backup copies on a different disk or machine when possible; a backup stored in the same directory does not help if that disk fails.

Check hardware and connectivity

  • Use a host that can stay powered on for the hours your group plays.
  • Prefer a wired network connection for the server if one is available.
  • Make sure the machine has enough free storage for world growth and at least one backup copy.
  • Record whether your internet service gives the router a publicly reachable address. Carrier-grade NAT can prevent ordinary inbound port forwarding even when router settings look correct.
  • Plan a way to stop the server cleanly before maintenance, copying a world, or rebooting the host.

Download and extract the correct server pack

  1. Open the SkyFactory 4 project’s files on CurseForge and select the server files entry for release 4.2.4.
  2. Confirm that the downloaded filename is SkyFactory-4_Server_4_2_4.zip, not the much smaller client modpack ZIP.
  3. Create the dedicated server directory and extract every archive member into it.
  4. Do not rename or remove the bundled Forge files, libraries, scripts, or configuration before the first successful launch.
  5. Keep the original ZIP somewhere safe so you can reconstruct a clean installation if a file is accidentally deleted.

The server pack is the authoritative starting point for this release. A vanilla Minecraft server JAR cannot supply SkyFactory’s mods, dimensions, recipes, or world-generation behavior.

Run the supplied installation and start scripts

Open a terminal or command prompt in the extracted directory and use the installation script supplied with the archive. On Windows this may be a batch file; on Linux or macOS it may be a shell script. Use the script’s documented command and keep the console visible. The first run normally installs or verifies Forge components and creates initial files. If a script opens and closes immediately, run it from an existing terminal so its error output remains visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Change into the actual server directory before launching. A command such as cd path-to-your-server-directory must point to the folder containing the extracted scripts, not the download folder containing the ZIP.
  2. Run the pack’s installation/start script exactly as supplied. Do not start a vanilla JAR directly.
  3. Wait for the process to finish its first initialization attempt. Look for Forge and mod-loading messages rather than assuming that a window closing means success.
  4. Stop the process cleanly from the console after the initial file creation. Use the server’s stop command instead of killing the terminal.

The script may create a Forge 1.12.2 server JAR, libraries, logs, and configuration on the first run. File names can differ between pack revisions, so follow the archive’s own script rather than substituting a filename from another tutorial.

Accept the EULA and set world options before generation

After the first run, locate eula.txt in the server directory. Open it, read the linked Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance line to eula=true only if you agree to the terms. Save the file, then start the supplied script again.

  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

If eula.txt does not exist, the command probably ran in the wrong directory or stopped before Java could write files. Check the terminal for a Java path, permission, or missing-library error before creating a file by hand.

Review the supplied server.properties before allowing the first world to generate. In particular, decide which SkyFactory world preset or level-generation settings the pack expects. The initial world-generation choice can determine the shape and behavior of the world; changing it after a world exists does not convert that existing save. Keep the pack’s supplied properties until you understand each setting, and change only the values you intentionally need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the server port in server.properties only if you have a reason to use a non-default value. The commonly documented Minecraft port is 25565; the value actually used by your server is the one shown in this file and in the startup log.

Allocate memory for players and automation

SkyFactory’s machines, item networks, chunk loaders, multiple dimensions, and scripted automation can place a much heavier load on a server than an unmodded world. Memory is only one part of the equation: CPU performance, storage latency, Java compatibility, and the number of active chunks also affect tick time.

Third-party planning guidance commonly treats 4 GB as a practical floor and about 6 GB as a starting point for a small group. These are planning figures, not an official universal requirement from the pack. Leave memory for the host operating system and other services; assigning all installed RAM to Java can make the machine unstable.

Group and workload Planning approach What to watch
Solo or very small group with limited automation Start around the practical floor described by third-party guidance, then observe startup and in-game behavior. Frequent garbage collection, long pauses, or steadily increasing memory use.
Small group with normal automation About 6 GB is a reasonable initial planning point, provided the host has additional RAM for the operating system. Tick time as players explore separate areas and machines run continuously.
Larger group or heavily chunk-loaded base Do not choose RAM by player count alone; size the machine after considering loaded chunks, dimensions, CPU speed, and storage. Server-tick delays, Forge watchdog messages, and host swapping.

Set the memory values in the pack’s supplied start script or settings file. Preserve the script’s other Forge and Java arguments. After changing memory, start the server and watch the console; a successful launch with frequent pauses still indicates that the workload or hardware needs attention.

Start Forge and verify the installation

  1. Launch the server with the supplied script after accepting the EULA.
  2. Confirm that the console reports Forge and SkyFactory mod loading. A prompt that identifies only a vanilla server indicates an incomplete extraction or an incorrect launch target.
  3. Wait until the console reports that the server is ready for connections.
  4. Connect locally from the host machine using its local address and the configured port. This test separates pack problems from router problems.
  5. Stop the server with the console’s stop command and confirm that the world saves before making configuration changes or copying a backup.

Keep the console output and the logs directory when diagnosing failures. The first meaningful Java, Forge, or mod-loading error is usually more useful than the final generic shutdown message.

Install the matching client for every player

Each player must use Minecraft Java Edition with the same SkyFactory release as the server: 4.2.4 for this guide. Install the client pack through the launcher or method recommended on its project page, then select that profile when starting Minecraft.

“Nearly the same” is not enough for a modded server. A player using another SkyFactory release, a different mod list, altered configuration, or a different Minecraft version can be rejected during the handshake or while loading the world. Keep a note of the server’s exact release and require everyone to update or downgrade to that same build before troubleshooting networking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a local connection, enter the host computer’s local IP address. A player on the same machine can usually use localhost. The local test should succeed before anyone attempts an internet connection.

Open the server for internet players

Allow the gameplay port through the host firewall

Create an inbound firewall rule for the TCP/UDP protocol combination required by your Minecraft installation and the port shown in server.properties. The commonly documented default is 25565, but do not open a different port unless the server is configured to listen there. Restrict rules to the intended network profile where your operating system allows it.

Forward the router’s external port

  1. Give the server computer a stable address on the home network, preferably through a DHCP reservation in the router.
  2. Open the router’s port-forwarding page.
  3. Forward the chosen external Minecraft port to the server computer’s internal address and the same listening port, unless you deliberately configured different values.
  4. Save the rule and restart networking only if the router requires it.
  5. Have a player outside your home network connect using your public address and the forwarded port. Do not use the private 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or similar local address for internet players.

Testing from inside the same network can fail on routers that do not support NAT loopback, so use a genuinely external connection when checking public access. Never publish the server console, file-transfer service, remote desktop, or router administration port just to make Minecraft connectivity work; expose only the gameplay port needed by players.

Recognize carrier-grade NAT

If local joining works, the firewall rule and forwarding entry are correct, and outside players still cannot connect, your internet provider may be using carrier-grade NAT. In that arrangement the router does not receive a directly reachable public address, so ordinary forwarding cannot accept unsolicited connections. Ask the provider about a public address, or use managed hosting or another network solution that is designed for inbound access.

Backups, updates, and safe administration

Make a clean world backup

  1. Tell players to stop building and disconnect.
  2. Issue the server’s stop command and wait until the process exits and files finish writing.
  3. Copy the complete world directory, and retain the server configuration needed to reproduce the installation.
  4. Store at least one copy outside the live server directory and label it with the date and pack version.
  5. Periodically test that a copy can be opened on a separate installation; an untested archive is not a dependable recovery plan.

Update cautiously

Back up before changing SkyFactory versions, Forge files, Java runtimes, or major configuration. The 4.2.4 release notes warn that a tomb-related update can make old tombs unavailable, so a version change can affect existing player recovery items even when the server appears to start normally.

Keep the original world untouched until the updated installation has been tested. Copy the backup into a separate test directory, launch the new version there, and confirm that dimensions, machines, inventories, and player data behave as expected. Never “test” an update on the only copy of an established world.

Keep administration private

  • Use a separate operating-system account or directory permissions so ordinary users cannot alter server files.
  • Do not give remote console, file-transfer, or desktop credentials to people who only need to play.
  • Keep the host operating system and router firmware updated.
  • Stop the server cleanly before editing configuration or moving a world.
  • Retain logs until a problem is resolved; deleting them removes useful evidence.

Troubleshooting common setup failures

No eula.txt appears

Confirm that the command ran in the extracted server directory, not in the directory containing the ZIP. Then inspect the console for an invalid Java executable, permission denial, missing library, or path error. Fix that first and rerun the supplied script. Creating an EULA file in the wrong directory will not change the server process that actually starts.

The server starts as vanilla

Stop it and verify that the complete server archive was extracted. Check that the launch script points to the Forge 1.12.2 server created by the pack and that the Forge libraries are present. A vanilla JAR cannot load SkyFactory’s mods, even if the world folder has a SkyFactory name.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The process closes or Forge reports class-loading errors

Run the script from a visible terminal and read the earliest error. Check Java compatibility, the executable path selected by the script, file permissions, and whether antivirus software quarantined a library. Re-extract a clean copy of the server archive instead of mixing files from another modpack or an older SkyFactory installation.

Players time out

  1. Test a local connection from the host or home network.
  2. If local joining fails, inspect the server log, configured port, firewall rule, and Forge/client versions.
  3. If local joining works, verify the host’s private address has not changed and that the router forwards to the correct machine.
  4. Check the public address and test from a genuinely external network.
  5. Investigate carrier-grade NAT if all forwarding settings appear correct.

The client rejects the connection

Compare the exact SkyFactory release, Minecraft version, mod list, and relevant configuration on both sides. Require the player to launch the 4.2.4 client profile rather than a similarly named older profile. Do not add or remove individual mods as a first fix; restore the matching pack version, then investigate deliberate customizations one at a time.

The server lags after automation expands

Check console tick-time or watchdog messages, the number of loaded chunks, and the machines or chunk loaders running continuously. Confirm that the host is not swapping memory and that storage is healthy. Increasing Java memory may help when the process is genuinely memory-starved, but it cannot compensate for a weak CPU, excessive chunk loading, or an inefficient base. Reduce always-loaded areas and test again before adding more RAM.

A practical first-session checklist

  • Server archive is SkyFactory-4_Server_4_2_4.zip, extracted completely into a writable directory.
  • Java runtime is compatible with the legacy Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge stack and is the one selected by the supplied script.
  • First launch completed far enough to create eula.txt; the EULA was accepted intentionally.
  • World-generation settings were reviewed before the first world was created.
  • Memory was set in the pack’s own start/settings files, with host RAM left for the operating system.
  • Console shows Forge and SkyFactory loading rather than a vanilla server.
  • Every player has the identical 4.2.4 Java Edition client build.
  • Local joining works before internet access is attempted.
  • Firewall and router rules expose only the configured Minecraft gameplay port.
  • A clean, dated backup exists before updates or major configuration changes.
