To set up a SIP in an index mutual fund in India, choose an index and scheme, select its Direct or Regular plan, confirm your KYC and bank details, then register an amount, schedule and payment mandate through the AMC or investment provider. The exact minimum, available dates and screens depend on the scheme and provider, so check their current instructions before confirming.
What an index mutual fund SIP does
An index mutual fund aims to track a named market index by holding all or most of its securities in similar proportions. Its goal is to follow the index, not actively outperform it. Fund expenses and portfolio differences mean its return can diverge from the index. SEBI Investor’s mutual fund information explains index funds and their passive approach.

A SIP, or Systematic Investment Plan, is a way to invest a set amount on a recurring schedule. It does not change what the fund owns: the exposure comes from the scheme’s index. Before choosing, consider whether that index’s market segment and risks fit your goal and time horizon.
Choose the index, scheme and plan
Compare schemes by the index they track, current expense ratio, disclosed tracking difference or tracking error, Riskometer, minimum SIP and other terms. These details vary by scheme and can change. Read the latest scheme information document (SID), key information memorandum (KIM) and factsheet, rather than relying on an old comparison or a generic minimum.

Direct and Regular are plan choices within a scheme, not different index exposures. They generally share the same portfolio and fund manager, but have different expense ratios and NAVs. A Direct plan excludes distributor expenses and puts research and execution on you. A Regular plan is routed through an intermediary, which may offer guidance or transaction support. Compare the cost with the help you want; neither plan is automatically right for every investor. AMFI’s explanation of Direct and Regular plans describes the distinction.
What to have ready
- KYC status: Confirm that your KYC is compliant for the investment. The AMFI-hosted Statement of Additional Information says investors must quote a PAN or eligible PEKRN and provide valid KYC compliance status for purchases and SIP registrations. Requirements can depend on the investor and current rules; follow the provider’s live instructions. Read the SAI.
- Bank details: Keep the bank account information required by the provider and ensure the account can be used for the investment. The SAI requires bank details and restricts third-party payments subject to applicable exceptions. Use the selected provider’s current payment and mandate process. See the SAI’s requirements.
- Scheme and schedule information: Know the exact scheme and plan you intend to select. Check the scheme’s current minimum SIP and which installment frequencies and dates it permits; there is no single minimum or schedule that applies to every fund.
Register the SIP
- Select the provider: Start through the AMC or investment provider you intend to use, and follow its current instructions. Screen names and available options are not universal.
- Choose the scheme and plan: Verify the index, scheme name and Direct or Regular option before proceeding.
- Enter the installment: Set an amount that meets the scheme’s current minimum, then choose an offered frequency and date.
- Set up payment: Select or provide the required bank details and complete the payment mandate or other authorization in the provider’s flow.
- Review and submit: Check the scheme, plan, amount, schedule and payment details on the confirmation screen before registering.
The applicable minimum comes from the individual scheme’s SID; do not assume a standard amount or that every provider offers the same schedule. The SAI also outlines SIP and investor requirements.

Verify the registration and understand NAV timing
Keep the provider’s registration confirmation. Check your account to see that the SIP and payment mandate show the expected status, and review the statement after an installment. If a registration or debit does not appear as expected, consult the provider’s current help instructions; the exact resolution process depends on that provider.

The applicable purchase NAV depends on when the transaction is made and when the funds are received or available to the mutual fund under the relevant cut-off rules. If the money reaches the fund later, the applicable NAV may be from a later business day. AMFI explains how purchase NAV depends on transaction and fund-receipt timing.

Investing on multiple dates spreads purchases across different NAVs, but it does not guarantee a lower average cost, a profit or protection from falling markets. Equity index funds can lose value, and their exposure depends on the particular index, including any concentration in its constituents. Review the scheme’s current Riskometer and risk disclosures before investing. SEBI Investor’s mutual fund guidance covers fund risks and disclosures.
