Blackbox Exporter

How to Set Up a Server for Website Monitoring

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most dependable setup is an always-on Linux VPS or mini-PC located outside your website’s network. For a small number of sites, run Uptime Kuma in Docker with persistent local storage. For historical metrics, latency analysis and rule-based alerts, run Prometheus with Blackbox Exporter; add Node Exporter when you also need CPU, memory and disk data from the monitoring host.

This guide covers both designs, alert testing, storage, security, troubleshooting and an API-based alternative for capturing visual evidence when an incident occurs.

Choose the monitoring design first

Option Best for Strengths Trade-offs
Uptime Kuma Small deployments and quick setup One Docker container, browser UI and straightforward service checks Less suited to complex metric queries and large-scale retention
Prometheus + Blackbox Exporter Teams that need metrics, latency history and rules Extensible scraping, time series and rule-based alerts More components and configuration to maintain
Prometheus + Blackbox + Node Exporter Website availability plus Linux host health Correlates endpoint failures with host resource pressure Requires exporter management and deliberate alert design

Use Uptime Kuma if you mainly need “is it reachable?” checks and a visual dashboard. Choose Prometheus when you need queryable history, recording rules or alerts that combine several signals. Prometheus uses rules to create new time series and generate alerts.

Prepare an independent monitoring server

1. Pick the host and network location

Use a small Linux VPS, an always-on mini-PC or another server you control. Place it outside the network that serves your website whenever possible. If the website and monitor share a power supply, router or data centre, one local failure can silence both.

  • 【Effortless Setup】 Network Rack includes hardware, a comprehensive manual, mounting hole drilling template and an online assembly video to simplify setup
  • Install a currently supported Linux distribution and apply security updates.
  • Give the host a stable hostname and outbound DNS, HTTPS and notification access.
  • Allow only the administration ports you need in the firewall. Do not expose exporter or Prometheus ports publicly unless access is authenticated and restricted.
  • Use SSH keys, disable password login where practical and create a non-root administrator.

2. Install Docker and create persistent storage

Install Docker using your distribution’s current instructions, then create a dedicated directory or named volume. Persistent storage matters: Uptime Kuma stores its configuration and history under /app/data, while Prometheus loses its data after a restart if /prometheus is not persisted.

Keep the data on local POSIX-compatible storage. Uptime Kuma’s installation guidance warns that file locks are required and that NFS can cause locking problems. An external SSD or equivalent local Docker volume is a practical storage choice; the documentation does not prescribe a particular brand, capacity or interface.

Fast deployment with Uptime Kuma

1. Start the container

Create a named volume and launch Uptime Kuma with an automatic restart policy:

docker volume create uptime-kuma-data
docker run -d
  --name uptime-kuma
  --restart=unless-stopped
  -p 3001:3001
  -v uptime-kuma-data:/app/data
  louislam/uptime-kuma:2

Open http://SERVER_IP:3001 from a trusted network, create the first administrator account and complete the setup wizard. Put the dashboard behind your reverse proxy and HTTPS before exposing it to the public internet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Add useful monitors

  1. Add an HTTP or HTTPS monitor for the homepage. Set a timeout and retry behavior that tolerate normal transient latency rather than masking a genuine outage.
  2. Add a second check for a real user journey, such as a login endpoint, checkout health endpoint or form submission API. A homepage can return 200 while the application is broken.
  3. For APIs, check the expected status code and, where supported, a response keyword or JSON condition.
  4. Choose an alert channel that remains available when the website fails. Email, a chat service or an incident system should not depend on the monitored site.
  5. Save the monitor, watch normal latency for several days and then adjust timeout and retry thresholds.

3. Back up and monitor Kuma itself

Back up the Docker volume or bind-mounted data directory on a schedule and test restoring it. Add a separate check for the monitoring dashboard or host. A stopped container, full disk or failed VPS must generate an alert rather than quietly ending observation.

Metrics-oriented deployment with Prometheus and Blackbox Exporter

1. Run Prometheus with a persistent volume

The following Compose file keeps Prometheus data in a named volume. Create a directory such as monitoring, save this as compose.yml, and create the configuration file shown below.

services:
  prometheus:
    image: prom/prometheus
    container_name: prometheus
    restart: unless-stopped
    ports:
      - "9090:9090"
    volumes:
      - ./prometheus.yml:/etc/prometheus/prometheus.yml:ro
      - prometheus-data:/prometheus
  blackbox:
    image: prom/blackbox-exporter
    container_name: blackbox-exporter
    restart: unless-stopped
    ports:
      - "9115:9115"
    volumes:
      - ./blackbox.yml:/etc/blackbox_exporter/config.yml:ro
volumes:
  prometheus-data:

Start it with docker compose up -d. Keep port 9090 and 9115 private or protect them with your access-control layer.

2. Define an HTTP probe

Create blackbox.yml with an HTTP module:

modules:
  http_2xx:
    prober: http
    timeout: 10s
    http:
      preferred_ip_protocol: ip4
      valid_http_versions: ["HTTP/1.1", "HTTP/2.0"]

Then configure prometheus.yml to ask Blackbox Exporter to probe each target:

global:
  scrape_interval: 30s

scrape_configs:
  - job_name: blackbox-http
    metrics_path: /probe
    params:
      module: [http_2xx]
    static_configs:
      - targets:
    relabel_configs:
      - source_labels: [__address__]
        target_label: __param_target
      - source_labels: [__param_target]
        target_label: instance
      - target_label: __address__
        replacement: blackbox:9115
  - job_name: blackbox-exporter
    static_configs:
      - targets: [blackbox:9115]

Reload or restart Prometheus, open its Status and Targets page, and confirm the Blackbox target is UP. The probe produces reachability and latency measurements from this monitoring server’s external location.

3. Add alerts based on measured behavior

Prometheus rules can alert when probe_success is zero, when probe duration exceeds a threshold you establish from normal observations, or when several endpoints fail together. Route those alerts through Alertmanager or another notification path that is independent of the website. Start with a small rule set and tune it after observing real traffic patterns; an arbitrary latency number can create noise.

Add Linux host telemetry with Node Exporter

Blackbox Exporter tells you what an external client sees. Node Exporter supplies standard Linux host metrics, including CPU, memory and disk data, so you can determine whether endpoint failures coincide with resource pressure. Run Node Exporter on the host you want to measure, expose its metrics to Prometheus on a private network, and add a normal scrape job:

  - job_name: node
    static_configs:
      - targets: ['node-exporter:9100']

Keep exporter endpoints inaccessible from the public internet. Use host-level alerts for a full filesystem, sustained resource exhaustion and a missing exporter, but avoid treating every short CPU spike as an outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure checks that find real failures

  • Homepage: detects DNS, TLS, routing and basic web-server failures.
  • Health endpoint: verifies application and dependency state; make it authenticated or intentionally limited if it reveals internals.
  • Transaction path: confirms that a critical workflow works, not merely that a page loads.
  • Multiple locations: a single monitor can mistake a regional route or ISP problem for a global outage. Add another independent vantage point when the impact justifies it.
  • Retries and timeouts: use a short retry sequence to suppress one-off packet loss, then alert quickly when failures persist. Revisit values after you have baseline latency.

Alert testing, reliability and maintenance

  1. Record the normal response time and status for each monitor.
  2. Cause a controlled failure, such as temporarily pointing a test monitor at a closed port, and verify the notification arrives.
  3. Restore the target and confirm recovery notifications are delivered.
  4. Stop the monitoring container briefly to test that the monitoring-of-monitoring check works.
  5. Review disk usage, Docker image updates, certificates and backup logs on a schedule.

Back up both Uptime Kuma data and Prometheus storage. Keep copies outside the monitoring host. Prometheus retention, scrape interval and target count determine storage growth, so inspect actual disk use rather than relying on an assumed size.

Troubleshooting common failures

Dashboard does not open

Check that the container is running with docker ps, inspect logs with docker logs uptime-kuma, verify the firewall and confirm that port 3001 is forwarded only where intended. A reverse proxy must forward WebSocket traffic if the dashboard requires it.

Uptime Kuma loses settings or reports database errors

Confirm that /app/data is mapped to the named volume or a local directory and that the container can write there. Move the data off NFS or another filesystem without reliable POSIX file-lock support, then restore from a backup.

Alerts never arrive

Check the notification service credentials, outbound firewall rules and alert state. Trigger a controlled failure, then inspect Prometheus and Alertmanager logs. If the notification channel is hosted on the monitored site, add an independent channel.

Too many false positives

Compare failures across targets and locations, increase retries modestly, and set thresholds from observed baseline latency. Do not hide persistent failures by making timeouts excessively long.

FAQ

Should the monitor run on the same server as the website?

No. An external host can still alert when the website’s server, network or power fails.

Can I run both Uptime Kuma and Prometheus?

Yes. Kuma can provide an accessible dashboard while Prometheus supplies long-term metrics and rule-based alerts, provided you maintain both data stores and notification paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I monitor first?

Start with the homepage, one health endpoint and one critical transaction. Add deeper checks only when they answer a specific operational question.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much storage does a monitoring server need?

The required amount depends on scrape interval, retention and target count. Measure actual Prometheus disk growth and keep Uptime Kuma data on persistent local storage rather than relying on an untested capacity estimate.

Is a Blackbox probe the same as a browser test?

No. Blackbox Exporter measures network-level HTTP behavior from its host. It does not replace a browser journey that executes application JavaScript or completes a user transaction.
