The most capable connection for a Samsung Q-Series soundbar is HDMI ARC or eARC: run an HDMI cable from the TV’s ARC/eARC socket to the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) socket, then select the bar as the TV’s sound output. On compatible eARC equipment, set HDMI-eARC Mode to Auto. Optical, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are useful alternatives, but each has model or audio-format limitations.
Because “Q-Series” covers many generations and TVs use different menus, verify the labels and instructions for both exact model numbers. The steps below follow Samsung’s published setup guidance while identifying where availability and wording can differ.

What you need before starting
Have the soundbar, its power cable, the TV, a compatible HDMI cable if you are using ARC/eARC, and the remote controls available. Check the model stickers or Settings screens so you know the exact Q-Series and TV versions. Ports, menu names and supported wireless features vary between generations and regions.
- A TV with an HDMI port labelled ARC or eARC is required for the HDMI method.
- The soundbar must have an HDMI socket labelled HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC).
- For Wi‑Fi, both devices must support the required Samsung wireless features and be on a working home network.
- For optical, the TV needs an optical digital-audio output and the bar an optical input.
- For Bluetooth, both devices need the appropriate Bluetooth audio profiles.
Do not assume that any HDMI socket will work for ARC. The television and soundbar manuals take precedence if the labels are in a different location or use slightly different wording.

Choose the connection that fits your equipment
Use HDMI ARC/eARC first when both devices provide it. Samsung says an HDMI connection provides the best possible audio quality, and its format comparison shows that eARC can carry formats unavailable over optical or Bluetooth. The best choice still depends on the exact TV, soundbar, source device, content and settings.
| Connection | Ports or setup | Samsung-published format information | Cable and practical considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI eARC | TV HDMI eARC to soundbar HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) | Supports Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Dolby Atmos, when the connected equipment supports it | HDMI cable required; enables TV-remote control through HDMI-CEC/Anynet+ on compatible equipment |
| HDMI ARC | TV HDMI ARC to soundbar HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) | Samsung lists Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Dolby Atmos, over standard HDMI; the actual result depends on the devices and source | HDMI cable required; enable HDMI-CEC/Anynet+ if control or ARC handshaking does not work |
| Optical | TV optical digital-audio output to soundbar optical input | Samsung’s comparison does not list Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD support over optical | Optical cable required; choose Optical or D.IN. as the soundbar source |
| Wi‑Fi/SmartThings | Soundbar joins the same network as the TV and is selected in TV Sound Output | Available formats and features depend on the models, network and content | No audio cable, but compatible hardware, SmartThings setup and a stable network are required |
| Bluetooth | Pair the soundbar from the TV’s Bluetooth speaker list | Samsung describes Bluetooth as potentially lower quality than HDMI or optical | No audio cable; pairing labels and behavior vary by TV and soundbar |
Samsung’s table is a capability comparison, not a guarantee that every Q-Series bar or television will output every listed format. A source player, streaming app, disc, game console and TV may negotiate a lower format even when the connection itself can carry more.
Set up HDMI ARC or eARC
1. Locate the two labelled ports
On the TV, find the socket marked HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. On the soundbar, find HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC). Connect those two ports only. Ordinary HDMI inputs on the television are not substitutes for its ARC/eARC port.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Use a suitable HDMI cable
Connect the ports with an HDMI cable. Samsung UK recommends a cable labelled High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet; Samsung Canada also recommends High Speed with Ethernet or Premium High Speed. If a suitable cable came with one of your devices, check its label before buying another. Cable class does not change the port requirement: the cable still must run between the two ARC/eARC-labelled sockets.
3. Power both devices and choose the soundbar source
Turn on the television and soundbar. On models using Samsung Canada’s documented ARC procedure, select D.IN. as the soundbar source; after a few seconds, the display should change to TV ARC. Other Q-Series generations can use a different source name, so use the source shown in the model manual if D.IN. is not available.
4. Select the bar as the TV’s audio output
Open the TV’s sound settings and choose the connected soundbar under Sound Output. A Samsung menu path documented for compatible eARC televisions is:
- Open Settings.
- Select All Settings.
- Open Sound.
- Choose Expert Settings.
- Select HDMI-eARC Mode.
- Set it to Auto.
Not every TV exposes the eARC switch, and menu wording differs by model and region. If the option is absent, follow that television’s manual rather than treating the missing menu as a fault.

Samsung calls its HDMI-CEC implementation Anynet+. Enable Anynet+ in the TV’s external-device or general-connection settings when the manual requires it. ARC audio and synchronized power or volume control can fail when CEC is disabled. Some Samsung instructions also suggest toggling the Anynet button on the soundbar remote when ARC has no audio.

6. Confirm the result
Play a TV channel or app and watch the soundbar display. A working ARC link commonly shows TV ARC or a corresponding eARC indication, while the TV’s Sound Output remains set to the external soundbar. If the TV falls back to its internal speakers, work through the troubleshooting section before changing to another connection.
Connect over Wi‑Fi with SmartThings
Wi‑Fi can be convenient when a compatible Q-Series bar and TV are already part of the same network. Samsung’s UK instructions state that SmartThings support starts with 2017 soundbars; older models use the Multiroom app instead. Confirm support on the exact soundbar’s product page or manual because the app and feature set are generation-dependent.
- Connect the phone to the same Wi‑Fi network that the TV uses.
- Set the soundbar’s source to Wi‑Fi, if that source is available on the model.
- Open SmartThings and add the soundbar.
- Complete the in-app network instructions.
- On the TV, open Sound Output and select the discovered soundbar.
A router using a DFS channel may prevent the soundbar from joining Wi‑Fi, according to Samsung. If discovery fails while other devices work, check the router’s channel configuration and the exact model’s wireless requirements. A wired HDMI connection is usually the simpler fallback when the TV and bar both have ARC/eARC.

Use an optical cable when HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable
Physical connection and source selection
Plug one end of an optical digital-audio cable into the TV’s optical output and the other into the soundbar’s optical input. Remove any protective caps from the cable ends, then select Optical or D.IN. on the soundbar, depending on the model. In the TV’s Sound Output menu, choose the optical or external-audio option rather than the internal speakers.
Know the format limitation
Optical carries digital audio, but Samsung’s comparison does not list Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby TrueHD over optical. That means a streaming service or disc that offers compressed Dolby Atmos through HDMI may output a different, lower-bandwidth format through optical. The exact output is negotiated by the TV, bar, source and selected audio settings.
Samsung TV-specific setting
Samsung Gulf notes that Samsung TVs from 2022 onward may require Simultaneous Optical Output for the setup it describes. If a recent Samsung TV produces no optical audio, look for that option in the TV’s sound-output settings and consult the television manual for its exact location. This requirement is not universal across every TV brand or model.
Pair the soundbar by Bluetooth
Put the Q-Series bar in pairing mode
Switch the soundbar to Bluetooth and choose pairing mode. Samsung describes the display as BT PAIRING on relevant models. If the display cycles through another Bluetooth status, use the model-specific remote sequence or manual.

- Open the TV’s sound settings.
- Enter the Bluetooth speaker or wireless-speaker list.
- Choose the Q-Series soundbar when it appears.
- Accept the pairing request and set the bar as the active sound output.
Bluetooth menu labels and pairing behavior vary. Samsung describes Bluetooth as potentially lower quality than HDMI or optical, so use it mainly when a cable or network connection is impractical. It also does not provide the same published high-format path as eARC.

Understand the audio formats you can receive
The connection determines what can be transported, but it does not create a format that the TV, soundbar or source cannot decode. Samsung’s published comparison gives these boundaries:
| Format | HDMI eARC | Standard HDMI/ARC | Optical | Bluetooth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Dolby Atmos | Supported in Samsung’s table, subject to device compatibility | Not listed as supported | Not listed as supported | Not listed as supported |
| Dolby Digital Plus, including compressed Dolby Atmos | Supported in Samsung’s table, subject to device compatibility | Supported in Samsung’s table, subject to device compatibility | Not listed as supported | Not listed as supported |
These are not independent performance measurements. They are Samsung’s format descriptions for its connection guide. A TV app may output a different soundtrack than a connected player, and a TV’s audio-format setting can affect what reaches the bar. Check the manuals for both devices and the source’s audio options before troubleshooting a format you expected but did not receive.
Plan around the source device
Decide where your streaming box, game console or disc player is connected before finalizing the wiring. A device connected directly to the TV sends its sound through the TV’s selected output, so the TV must be configured to pass audio to the soundbar. If a source offers several soundtrack choices, its selected option and the TV’s processing settings can determine whether the bar receives stereo, Dolby Digital Plus or another available format.
Do not infer a format from a logo on the soundbar alone. The TV, source and content all have to provide that format, and the connection must support it. For example, Samsung’s table identifies Dolby TrueHD and uncompressed Dolby Atmos on eARC, while standard ARC is listed for Dolby Digital Plus and compressed Dolby Atmos. A TV app or external player can still send a different track.
Check control and source behavior after setup
With HDMI, test the TV remote’s volume and power controls after enabling Anynet+. If the bar does not respond, confirm the TV is still set to the external soundbar and that the bar has not switched to Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi or another input. A soundbar can be connected physically yet remain on the wrong source.
For optical and Bluetooth, expect fewer HDMI-CEC control functions. You may need to select the soundbar source manually or use its remote, depending on the model. Wireless menus can also show a generic device name rather than the complete Q-Series model name; compare the displayed name with the bar’s manual before pairing a nearby device.
Cable and purchase checklist
If you need an HDMI cable, look for the class Samsung specifies: High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet; Samsung Canada also lists Premium High Speed. First check whether an appropriate cable is included with the TV or soundbar. Buying a cable cannot compensate for plugging into an ordinary HDMI port, and no cable label changes whether a particular TV or bar supports ARC or eARC.
For optical, verify that both devices have the square optical connector and remove the small protective caps before inserting it. For Wi‑Fi, confirm the phone, TV and soundbar can use the same network and that the bar’s model supports SmartThings or the older Multiroom app. For Bluetooth, confirm that the TV can output to Bluetooth speakers rather than only receiving Bluetooth audio.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The TV does not list the soundbar
Recheck the HDMI port labels, power to both devices and the TV’s Sound Output screen. ARC discovery depends on the labelled ports and HDMI-CEC/Anynet+. If the bar is connected to a normal HDMI input, move it to the ARC/eARC port and restart both devices.
The display says TV ARC but there is no sound
Keep the cable in the two labelled ports, select the external soundbar again on the TV and reselect D.IN. or the model’s equivalent source on the bar. Confirm Anynet+ is enabled. On eARC equipment, set HDMI-eARC Mode to Auto. Then power-cycle both devices and allow them to renegotiate.
Sound works, but Dolby Atmos or another expected format does not appear
Check whether the TV, soundbar and source support that format and whether the source is actually providing it. Samsung lists uncompressed Dolby Atmos with Dolby TrueHD over eARC and compressed Dolby Atmos with Dolby Digital Plus over HDMI, but does not list those formats over optical or Bluetooth. The content and device settings may select a different soundtrack.

Wi‑Fi setup cannot find the soundbar
Make sure the phone and TV use the same network, the bar is set to Wi‑Fi and the exact model supports the app you are using. Samsung notes that a router on a DFS channel may block the soundbar’s Wi‑Fi connection. Check the router channel and retry, or use HDMI if both devices provide ARC/eARC.
Optical works intermittently or not at all
Confirm the cable is fully inserted, the TV output is set to optical or external audio, and the soundbar source is Optical or D.IN. Samsung Gulf’s guidance says some Samsung TVs from 2022 onward may require Simultaneous Optical Output. Look for that setting and follow the TV manual.

Before changing several settings at once, note the current TV output and soundbar source. Then verify the ports, reseat the cable, enable Anynet+/CEC, confirm eARC Auto where applicable, and restart both devices. Update firmware using each model’s supported procedure if Samsung’s guidance recommends it. Retest after each change so you know which step restored audio. A working optical or Bluetooth connection can be a diagnostic fallback, but it does not by itself prove that a particular HDMI cable or device is defective.
Which setup should you use?
- Choose eARC when both devices have eARC and you want the broadest format path, including Samsung’s listed Dolby TrueHD and uncompressed Dolby Atmos capability.
- Choose ARC when the TV and bar have ARC but not eARC; it keeps a single-cable connection and can carry the Dolby Digital Plus formats Samsung lists for standard HDMI.
- Choose optical when ARC/eARC is absent or unreliable and you can accept its published format limitations.
- Choose Wi‑Fi when your exact models support SmartThings or the appropriate older app and the network is stable.
- Choose Bluetooth for a cable-free connection when convenience matters more than the potentially lower quality and narrower format support Samsung describes.
Whichever method you select, the decisive checks are the exact port labels, the TV’s Sound Output selection, and the soundbar source. Feature availability and menu wording are model- and region-dependent, so the manuals for the specific Q-Series bar and TV remain the final authority.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect my Samsung Q-Series soundbar to my TV?
For the preferred wired setup, connect the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port with a suitable HDMI cable. Select the soundbar in the TV’s Sound Output menu, set HDMI-eARC Mode to Auto when that option exists, and enable Anynet+/HDMI-CEC if required.

Can I use any HDMI port for a Samsung soundbar?
No. ARC or eARC audio requires the TV port labelled ARC/eARC and the soundbar port labelled HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC). A regular HDMI input is not a substitute.
What HDMI cable does Samsung recommend?
Samsung UK recommends a cable labelled High Speed or High Speed with Ethernet. Samsung Canada also recommends High Speed with Ethernet or Premium High Speed. Check whether an appropriate cable is already included before buying one.
Why does my soundbar show TV ARC but remain silent?
Confirm the TV’s Sound Output is set to the external soundbar, the bar is on D.IN. or its equivalent source, and Anynet+/HDMI-CEC is enabled. On compatible eARC TVs, set HDMI-eARC Mode to Auto. Then reseat the cable and restart both devices.
Is optical as good as HDMI eARC?
Samsung describes HDMI as providing the best possible audio quality. Its format comparison lists Dolby TrueHD, including uncompressed Dolby Atmos, over eARC, while optical is not listed for Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Digital Plus. The exact result still depends on the devices and source.
Can a Samsung Q-Series soundbar connect over Wi‑Fi?
Compatible models can use Wi‑Fi and SmartThings. Samsung says SmartThings support starts with 2017 soundbars; older models use the Multiroom app. Put the phone on the same network as the TV, add the bar in the supported app, then select it in TV Sound Output. DFS router channels may prevent connection.
How do I pair the soundbar by Bluetooth?
Put the bar in Bluetooth pairing mode, often shown as BT PAIRING, open the TV’s Bluetooth speaker list and select the soundbar. Pairing labels vary by model, and Samsung describes Bluetooth as potentially lower quality than HDMI or optical.
Do Samsung TVs need a special setting for optical audio?
Samsung Gulf notes that Samsung TVs from 2022 onward may require Simultaneous Optical Output for the setup it describes. If optical produces no sound, check that setting and the television manual; it is not a universal requirement for every TV.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I update firmware if ARC does not work?
Yes, Samsung’s regional guidance recommends current firmware and retrying the connection when ARC behavior remains abnormal. Update each device using its supported method, then repeat the port, source, Sound Output and CEC checks. An update cannot add eARC hardware to a model that lacks it.
The Bottom Line
Connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the Q-Series soundbar’s HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) port, select the bar in Sound Output, and use HDMI-eARC Mode set to Auto when available. Enable Anynet+/CEC if needed. If HDMI is unavailable, optical, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth can work when the exact models support them, but their controls and audio formats differ.
