How to Set Up a Samsung Galaxy Tablet for the First Time

By Freedom251 Team · · 14 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turn on the Galaxy tablet, choose your language, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on-screen wizard. During setup you will choose whether to copy data, add a Google account, create a screen lock, optionally sign in to a Samsung account, and select Light or Dark mode. A cellular model may also require a physical SIM or eSIM activation; a Wi-Fi-only model does not.

Have your Wi-Fi password, your previous phone or tablet (if you are transferring data), and the appropriate charging cables nearby. The exact screen order and wording can differ by model, carrier, and software version.

Before you start

  • Charge the tablet and old device. Wireless Smart Switch transfers can run while both devices remain connected to their chargers. A transfer may include a large amount of content, so starting with adequate battery power helps you avoid an interruption.
  • Find your Wi-Fi password. The initial wizard needs an internet connection. If your network is hidden, Samsung’s setup flow provides a way to add it manually. Keep the network name and any other details the manual-entry screen requests available.
  • Identify the tablet type. Wi-Fi-only tablets skip mobile-network activation. LTE and 5G tablets may need a physical SIM inserted or an eSIM activated. If you are unsure which version you bought, check the tablet’s packaging or the cellular prompts that appear during setup.
  • Gather transfer hardware. For wired Smart Switch transfers, have a compatible cable. If the old device’s cable cannot connect directly to the tablet, you may need a USB-OTG adapter. Check both connectors before beginning rather than buying an adapter automatically.
  • Decide whether you want a clean start. You can copy supported content from another device or set up the tablet without copying. A clean setup is appropriate when the tablet is for a different person or you do not want old apps and files. You can still run Smart Switch later if you change your mind.
  • Keep account credentials close. The wizard can ask for a Google account and may offer Samsung account sign-in. Knowing which account should own Play Store downloads and which Samsung services you use prevents confusion when more than one person uses the tablet.

Complete the first-run setup wizard

1. Turn on the tablet and choose the initial preferences

Press and hold the power button until the Samsung logo appears. The wizard asks for language and other initial preferences. Read each screen rather than relying on a fixed sequence: Samsung notes that labels and order vary by model, carrier, and software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some screens may combine several choices or present them in a different order than the steps below. Treat the wizard’s prompts as the current instructions for your particular tablet, and use the back option if you need to correct a selection before continuing.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Connect to Wi-Fi

Select your network, enter its password, and continue. If the network name is not broadcast, use the option to add the network manually and enter the requested network details. A stable connection is useful for account sign-in, app downloads, and any data-transfer setup.

If you are setting up away from home, choose a network you trust. You can change the connection later in Settings, so you do not have to use the same network permanently. If the tablet cannot join, recheck the network name and password before assuming the tablet has a hardware problem.

3. Activate cellular service when required

On an LTE or 5G tablet, follow the prompt for a physical SIM or eSIM. Insert the SIM in the tray in the orientation shown by the tablet, or follow the on-screen eSIM instructions. Activation details are controlled by your carrier, so contact the carrier if the SIM or eSIM is not recognized or the service will not activate.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Wi-Fi-only Galaxy tablet has no cellular activation step. It can still use Wi-Fi and, where supported, other internet connections shared from a phone. Do not buy a SIM simply because the tablet has a mobile-style model name; confirm whether your specific model includes cellular hardware first.

4. Choose between copying data and a clean setup

The wizard asks whether to copy apps and data from an earlier device. Choose the transfer option if you want to bring over supported content, or choose the option to set up without copying for a fresh tablet. The transfer choices are described in detail below.

Think of this as a choice about supported content, not a guarantee that the new tablet will be an exact clone. Smart Switch shows categories available for your devices and method. Account-backed information may be synchronized later after you add the account that owns it.

5. Add a Google account

A Google account gives the tablet access to the Google Play Store and other Google features. Sign in with an existing account or create one when prompted. If you have more than one Google account, use the account that should own app downloads and Google-synced content on this tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the tablet is shared, decide whose account should be used before downloading apps. Adding another account later does not change which account you initially selected for the setup flow, so choosing deliberately now can make app and calendar access easier to understand.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

6. Create a screen lock

Set the standard lock method requested by the wizard. You may also be offered fingerprint or face recognition. Biometric unlocking does not replace the standard method: Samsung requires a password, PIN, or pattern as a fallback and for certain security checks.

Memorize the standard method even if you plan to use biometrics most of the time. You will need the fallback method when the tablet requests it, and biometric setup cannot remove that underlying lock requirement.

7. Sign in to or create a Samsung account

The Samsung account step is separate from the Google account step. Samsung associates this account with Galaxy-device syncing, Samsung app downloads, and features that help locate the tablet. Sign in if you already use those services, create an account if you want them, or continue without it if you do not need them immediately. You can revisit account settings later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Google account is the key account for Play Store access; a Samsung account supports Samsung-specific services. They are not interchangeable, so signing in to one does not automatically complete the other account step.

8. Select Light or Dark mode

Choose Light or Dark mode when the wizard presents the appearance setting. Finish the remaining prompts to reach the tablet’s home screen. The appearance choice is a preference rather than a transfer method, and it can be changed later in the tablet’s settings.

Choose the right way to transfer data

Samsung Smart Switch supports transfers from Galaxy and other Android devices as well as iPhones and iPads. The available content depends on the source device and the transfer method, so no route guarantees that every app, setting, or file will move.

Use wireless transfer when connector compatibility is uncertain or when you want both devices to remain on chargers. Use a wired connection when you have a direct, compatible cable and prefer a physical link. External storage is useful when files already live on a card or USB-OTG flash drive, but tablet support for microSD varies. QR quick setup is convenient during the initial wizard on compatible Galaxy devices, not a general replacement for Smart Switch after setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Method Source devices Charging and connection Extra hardware Best use Important limits
Wireless Smart Switch Galaxy/Android and iOS devices, where supported Both devices can remain plugged into chargers while they communicate wirelessly None beyond the devices and their compatible software When you want to avoid cable and connector issues Transferable content depends on the devices and the selected categories
Wired Smart Switch Galaxy/Android and iOS devices, using a compatible cable combination Devices are connected directly during the transfer Often a USB-OTG adapter; a USB-C-to-USB-C cable or certain Lightning-to-USB-C connections may connect directly When you have a suitable cable and want a direct connection An incompatible cable or adapter prevents the devices from connecting
External storage Content stored on a microSD card or USB-OTG flash drive, where supported Uses the storage device rather than a device-to-device wireless link Compatible microSD card or USB-OTG flash drive Moving files through a removable backup Not all Galaxy tablet models support microSD; supported content still depends on the source and method
QR quick setup A compatible existing Galaxy device and a new Galaxy tablet The old device scans a code displayed by the new tablet None, but the feature is not available on every Galaxy device Starting network, account authentication, and transfer during the initial wizard It is an initial-setup route. Using it after setup requires a factory data reset that deletes the tablet’s current data

How to decide in practice

  • Choose wireless when both devices are available, you want to avoid buying an adapter, or your cable ends do not match.
  • Choose wired when you have a direct USB-C-to-USB-C cable or a supported Lightning-to-USB-C connection, or when the old device’s cable can connect through a suitable USB-OTG adapter.
  • Choose external storage when the files are already on a microSD card or USB-OTG flash drive and your tablet supports that storage type. Confirm compatibility before buying a card.
  • Choose QR quick setup only when the option appears during the initial wizard and the existing Galaxy device supports it. If setup is complete, ordinary Smart Switch avoids erasing the tablet.

Transfer from an old phone or tablet with Smart Switch

Wireless transfer

  1. On the new tablet, choose the option to receive data when the setup wizard offers it, or open Smart Switch after setup and choose the receive-data path.
  2. On the old Galaxy or Android device, choose the send-data path. On an iPhone or iPad, follow Smart Switch’s iOS transfer instructions shown on the Galaxy tablet.
  3. Select the wireless connection when both devices offer a connection method, then approve the pairing or connection request on each screen.
  4. Review the categories Smart Switch can move and select the content you want. Keep both devices near each other and connected to chargers until the transfer finishes.
  5. Let the tablet complete the transfer before opening newly copied apps or disconnecting the devices. Some account-based content may appear only after you sign in to that service.

If you are moving only selected material, review each category instead of accepting every available item. This keeps a clean setup from becoming a full copy of the old device and makes it easier to identify what still needs to be synchronized from an account.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Wired transfer

  1. Check the ports on both devices. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable can connect compatible devices directly. Certain Lightning-to-USB-C combinations can also connect directly.
  2. If the old device’s cable does not fit the tablet, connect that cable through a USB-OTG adapter. Use the adapter only when the existing cable cannot connect directly.
  3. Open Smart Switch or select the transfer option in the setup wizard, designate the old device as the sender and the Galaxy tablet as the receiver, and approve any connection prompts.
  4. Select the categories to move and start the transfer. Avoid unplugging the cable or adapter until Smart Switch reports completion.

An OTG adapter is an optional accessory, not a universal requirement. The correct choice depends on the connectors on both devices. A direct cable is simpler when it fits; wireless is the fallback when you cannot establish a compatible wired connection.

QR quick setup

When the new tablet displays the QR quick-setup option, use the old compatible Galaxy device to scan the code. Samsung describes this route as a way to authenticate existing network and account information and begin a transfer. Availability differs among Galaxy devices.

If you already completed the initial wizard, do not factory-reset the tablet merely to use the QR route. A reset erases the tablet’s current data. Use ordinary Smart Switch after setup instead. Resetting is appropriate only when you intentionally want to erase the tablet and have protected anything you need to keep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What Smart Switch can and cannot restore

Content that is synchronized through an account

Some information is not copied as a standalone file. Samsung gives Google or Office calendars as examples: after you add the relevant account to the tablet, that service synchronizes the calendar data. The same principle applies to other account-backed content; sign in to the service that owns it.

If a calendar or similar item is missing after transfer, first check that the correct account was added and synchronization is enabled through that service. Running Smart Switch repeatedly will not substitute for signing in to the account that maintains the data.

Apps, settings, and files

Smart Switch’s available categories vary with the source device and the method. An app may transfer but still require its account login, a compatible tablet version, or a download from the Play Store. Review the categories presented on your own devices instead of assuming that every item from the old device will be reproduced exactly.

After the transfer, open a representative sample of important apps and files. This confirms both that the item arrived and that any separate account sign-in is complete. Keep the old device available until you have checked essentials rather than erasing it immediately.

External storage

Samsung documents microSD cards and USB-OTG flash drives as external-storage options. MicroSD support is not universal across Galaxy tablets, so verify that your specific model accepts a card before buying one or planning a card-based transfer.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

External storage is a route for content already stored on that device; it does not guarantee that every app, setting, or account record will be recreated. Use the categories and compatibility information shown by Smart Switch on your tablet.

If you skipped transfer during setup

You can run Smart Switch after reaching the home screen and transfer supported data then. This is normally safer than resetting the tablet. The QR initial-setup flow is the exception: returning to it later requires a factory data reset, which deletes data already stored on the tablet.

For a post-setup transfer, open Smart Switch on the tablet, select the receive-data path, and choose wireless, wired, or an available external-storage route. The same source-device and content limitations still apply, so inspect the categories before starting.

Common setup problems and the safest fix

The tablet cannot see your Wi-Fi network

Confirm the network name and password. For a hidden network, use the wizard’s manual-add option. If the network still cannot be joined, complete setup on a network you control and investigate the original network afterward. Remember that a Wi-Fi-only model needs Wi-Fi or another supported shared connection for internet access.

The SIM or eSIM will not activate

Recheck that the tablet is a cellular model and that the physical SIM is seated as shown. For eSIM activation or service provisioning, contact the carrier; Samsung’s setup flow cannot replace carrier activation. If you have a Wi-Fi-only model, there is no cellular activation to complete.

The cable does not connect the devices

Compare the ports and cable ends. Try a direct USB-C-to-USB-C or supported Lightning-to-USB-C connection when available. If the old device’s cable uses a different connector, use a compatible USB-OTG adapter. Wireless Smart Switch avoids this connector problem.

A transfer is missing calendars or other account data

Add the account that owns the information and allow its service to synchronize. Content maintained by Google, Office, or another external service is restored through that service rather than necessarily being copied by Smart Switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The QR option is missing

Samsung says QR quick setup is not available on every Galaxy device. Use the ordinary Smart Switch wireless or wired route when the QR option does not appear. Do not reset a completed setup just to search for QR quick setup.

You want to start over after reaching the home screen

Do not reset solely to obtain the QR setup option. A factory data reset removes current tablet data. First try Smart Switch from the existing setup; reserve a reset for a deliberate clean start when you have backed up anything you need.

Final checks before you rely on the tablet

  • Confirm that Wi-Fi works and, on a cellular model, that the carrier shows the expected service.
  • Open the Play Store to verify the Google account is present and app downloads work.
  • Check whether you chose to use a Samsung account and verify the Samsung services you expect, such as Galaxy syncing or device-location features.
  • Lock and unlock the tablet with the standard method you created; test biometric unlocking only after the fallback method works.
  • Check the transferred categories in Smart Switch and sign in to services whose data is synchronized rather than copied.
  • If you used removable storage, verify that the tablet model supports the card or USB-OTG device and that the expected files are visible.
  • Open important photos, documents, contacts, and apps instead of checking only that a transfer message appeared.
  • Keep the old device until you have confirmed that essential photos, documents, contacts, and account data are available on the tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need both a Google account and a Samsung account?

They serve different purposes. A Google account provides Play Store access and other Google features. A Samsung account supports Samsung services such as Galaxy-device syncing, Samsung app downloads, and features that help locate the tablet. You can continue without a Samsung account and add one later if you need those services.

Can I set up a Galaxy tablet without copying my old device?

Yes. Choose the option to set up without copying during the wizard for a clean start. If you change your mind, run Smart Switch after reaching the home screen instead of resetting the tablet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Smart Switch transfer from an iPhone or iPad?

Samsung supports Smart Switch transfers from iOS devices as well as Galaxy and other Android devices. The categories available depend on the source device and connection method, so review the items Smart Switch presents.

Do I need a USB-OTG adapter for Smart Switch?

Not always. A USB-C-to-USB-C cable, or certain Lightning-to-USB-C connections, may connect directly. Use a USB-OTG adapter only when the old device’s cable cannot connect directly to the tablet. Wireless Smart Switch requires no cable or adapter.

Will my Google or Office calendar be copied?

Samsung identifies calendars synchronized through Google or Office as account-backed content. Add the account that owns the calendar on the tablet and let that service synchronize it; it may not arrive as a standalone Smart Switch file.

Does every Galaxy tablet accept a microSD card?

No. Samsung notes that microSD support varies by tablet model. Check the specifications for your exact model before buying a card or choosing external-storage transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use QR quick setup after I finish the wizard?

QR quick setup is an initial-setup route and is not available on every Galaxy device. Returning to it after setup requires a factory data reset, which deletes current tablet data. Use ordinary Smart Switch after setup instead.

What should I do if my cellular tablet will not activate?

Confirm whether it uses a physical SIM or eSIM and follow the tablet’s instructions. The carrier controls activation and provisioning, so contact the carrier if the SIM is not recognized or eSIM service will not activate. A Wi-Fi-only tablet has no cellular activation step.

Can biometric unlocking replace a PIN, password, or pattern?

No. Fingerprint or face recognition still requires a standard lock method as a fallback and for certain security checks. Set and remember that method during the setup wizard.

The Bottom Line

Follow the tablet’s current wizard, connect to Wi-Fi, and distinguish cellular activation from Wi-Fi-only setup. Choose wireless, wired, external-storage, or QR transfer based on your devices and connectors, remembering that account-synchronized data must be restored by signing in. If you skip migration, Smart Switch remains available after setup; do not factory-reset the tablet just to obtain QR quick setup.
