To set up a Galaxy SmartTag2, use a compatible Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 9 or later, sign in to a Samsung account, activate the tag by removing its battery film or inserting its CR2032 battery, and add it in SmartThings. If the automatic prompt does not appear, use Devices → + → Add → Samsung devices → Tag/Tracker, or scan the QR code on the product box. When setup is complete, the tag is listed in SmartThings and its location is available on the SmartThings Find map.

What you need before setting up SmartTag2

SmartTag2 is designed to be registered through Samsung’s SmartThings ecosystem rather than paired as a generic Bluetooth accessory. Prepare these items before opening the setup screen:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A compatible Galaxy smartphone or tablet: Samsung support specifies a Galaxy device running Android 9.0 or later. Android-version and device support can vary by market. A non-Samsung Android phone is not the published setup route.
  • A Samsung account: You must be signed in before registration. Samsung states that account login and device registration in SmartThings Find are required.
  • The SmartThings app: Install it or update it from your Galaxy device’s app store, then open it and sign in.
  • The tag and its included battery: SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. A battery is supplied with the new tag, so a replacement cell is not needed for initial pairing.
  • Internet access during registration: The phone needs a working connection so SmartThings can complete account registration and enable finding features.

A tray-eject pin is included in the package. It is not a separate setup requirement. Silicone and rugged cases are optional carrying accessories and do not change the pairing process. Keep the box until setup is complete because its QR code provides a useful fallback if automatic discovery fails.

Samsung’s Gulf Support pairing article, updated July 1, 2026, describes the normal detection flow. Samsung Canada’s product information separately confirms that a Samsung account and SmartThings Find registration are required, so signing in is not an optional extra step.

How do I set up a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2?

Samsung’s pairing flow starts when the tag is powered and its button is pressed. Complete the following sequence close to your Galaxy phone:

  1. Update SmartThings. Open your app store, install any available SmartThings update, and launch the app.
  2. Sign in to your Samsung account. If you have more than one Samsung account, use the account that should own and manage the tag.
  3. Activate SmartTag2. Remove the insulating film from the battery compartment. If your unit was supplied without an installed cell, insert the CR2032 battery in the orientation marked inside the compartment.
  4. Press the tag’s button once. Samsung says the tag makes a sound when it is ready to be added.
  5. Wait for the SmartThings detection prompt. Keep the phone near the tag while the app searches. Do not put the tag in a metal drawer, vehicle compartment, or thick case during this first connection.
  6. Tap Add on the prompt, then follow each on-screen instruction. You may be asked to confirm the Samsung account, name the tag, or select where it is used.
  7. Finish registration and verify the device. The tag should appear in SmartThings, and its location should be available on the SmartThings Find map.

The automatic prompt is the quickest route, but it is not the only route. A missing prompt does not mean the tag is defective. If the tag is new, the insulating film is the most common thing to check before trying more involved troubleshooting.

How do I add SmartTag2 if the pop-up doesn’t appear?

Use SmartThings’ manual-add path when no detection card appears after you activate and press the tag:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open SmartThings.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Tap the + button.
  4. Choose Add.
  5. Under Samsung devices, select Tag/Tracker.
  6. Follow the instructions shown by the app to complete registration.

Menu labels can differ slightly by country, language, or SmartThings version. Look for the equivalent Samsung-device or tag/tracker category rather than treating a wording difference as a setup failure. Samsung advises retrying when environmental conditions affect connectivity and notes that performance can degrade when many devices are connected simultaneously.

Use the package QR code as another setup route

Samsung also documents QR-code registration. In SmartThings, go to Devices → + → Scan QR code, then scan the QR code printed on the SmartTag2 product box. Complete the on-screen steps and check that the tag is listed in SmartThings afterward. Keep the box until registration is finished; its code is useful if automatic discovery is unavailable. QR registration still requires the Samsung account and compatible Galaxy device described above.

How do I connect SmartTag2 to SmartThings Find?

There is no separate Bluetooth-pairing sequence after SmartThings registration. SmartThings adds the tag to the Samsung account, and that registration makes it available in SmartThings Find. To confirm the connection:

  • Open SmartThings and look for SmartTag2 in your device list.
  • Open the tag’s controls and choose the finding or location view.
  • Open SmartThings Find and confirm the tag is shown on the map.

Samsung’s setup guidance describes successful completion as the tag being listed in SmartThings and its location appearing on the SmartThings Find map. If it is visible in SmartThings but the map has not populated, leave the app open briefly with the phone online and retry the location view. A map marker is a finding result, not proof of continuous, second-by-second tracking.

  • Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
  • Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes

What SmartTag2 can find, and what it cannot promise

SmartTag2 communicates directly with a Galaxy phone or tablet using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Samsung lists a maximum BLE connection range of up to 120 m. That is a manufacturer maximum under suitable conditions, not a guaranteed distance in a house, apartment, office, or vehicle. Walls, drawers, furniture, and a car can reduce the effective range and location accuracy.

When the tag is outside direct Bluetooth range, offline finding can use other participating Galaxy devices in Samsung’s Galaxy Find Network. Those devices can relay an approximate location without giving the finder access to your tag’s personal information. Because the relay depends on nearby participating devices, it is not continuous tracking and cannot guarantee an exact or immediate position. A quiet residential area may produce fewer updates than a busy public location.

Basic Bluetooth finding versus Compass View

Feature Device requirement What it provides Important qualification
Basic finding and ringing Compatible Galaxy phone or tablet registered in SmartThings Map location, tag controls, and a sound to help locate a nearby tag BLE range and accuracy are affected by obstacles; Samsung lists up to 120 m as the maximum connection range
Compass View UWB-enabled Galaxy smartphone running Android 11 or later Directional, proximity-oriented guidance when you are near the tag Not every Android 11 Galaxy phone has UWB. Availability depends on the phone, operating system, connected device, and country

Compass View is optional. You do not need it to pair SmartTag2, see a map location, or use ordinary nearby finding. Samsung Japan describes UWB camera/AR finding at about 10 m or less, but actual distance varies with obstacles and the compatible phone. Treat that figure as an approximate manufacturer description, not a fixed radius. If your phone lacks UWB, the standard map and ring functions still work.

How to use Lost Mode and safety notifications

Lost Mode with NFC

SmartTag2 supports Lost Mode. Before losing the item, register a message and contact information in SmartThings. If someone finds the tag, they can tap it with an NFC-capable phone. Samsung Canada says the finder’s phone needs NFC reading and internet access to display the details you registered. NFC availability and behavior vary between phones, so do not rely on Lost Mode as a substitute for a visible label on valuable property. Check the message and contact details after saving them so an old phone number does not remain attached to the tag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unknown-tag and left-behind alerts

Samsung’s SmartThings Find settings include notifications for an unknown tag detected moving with you and alerts when a registered tag is left behind. These controls are separate from the initial pairing screen. Open the SmartThings Find settings after setup and review which notifications are enabled, because an alert can be useful for keys or bags but distracting for items that routinely leave your phone. Notification behavior depends on the phone, software version, and the conditions under which the tag is detected.

Why won’t my SmartTag2 connect?

Work through the causes in this order. Samsung advises retrying setup because environmental conditions can affect connectivity and notes that performance may degrade when many devices are connected simultaneously.

The tag does not make a sound

  • Check that the insulating film was fully removed.
  • Open the battery compartment and confirm the CR2032 is present and facing the direction marked inside the tag.
  • Press the product button once again while the phone is nearby.
  • If the cell has been stored for a long time, try a known-good CR2032.

SmartThings cannot detect the tag

  • Confirm that SmartThings is updated and that you are signed in to a Samsung account.
  • Move away from dense electronics or a crowded area with many simultaneous wireless connections, then retry.
  • Use the manual path Devices → + → Add → Samsung devices → Tag/Tracker.
  • Use Devices → + → Scan QR code and scan the code on the product box.
  • Keep the tag close to the phone and temporarily remove a case or place it away from metal objects while pairing.

The tag appears, but no map location is shown

  • Check that registration finished under the intended Samsung account.
  • Keep the phone online and reopen SmartThings Find.
  • Bring the tag within ordinary Bluetooth range and try the location view again.
  • Remember that a map position relayed through the Galaxy Find Network depends on nearby participating Galaxy devices and may not update immediately.

The tag will not power on after battery checks

Samsung Japan’s troubleshooting instructions say to remove the battery, press the tag button once, then hold the button while reinserting the battery until the tag sounds; the hold lasts at least seven seconds. Regional instructions can differ, so use the procedure supplied for your market if the sequence or sound does not match. Stop if the battery compartment or cell is damaged.

How do I move SmartTag2 to another Samsung account or phone?

Remove the tag from SmartThings before attempting to register it with a different Samsung account or device. Samsung Japan gives this route:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open SmartThings and select Devices.
  2. Open the three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Remove device and confirm.
  4. On the new Galaxy phone, sign in to the intended Samsung account and repeat the normal SmartTag2 setup.

If you skip removal, the existing registration can prevent reassignment. A factory-style restart or battery replacement does not by itself transfer ownership in SmartThings. If you bought a used tag, ask the previous owner to remove it from their account before trying to add it.

Battery replacement and expected life

SmartTag2 uses a replaceable CR2032, not a rechargeable battery. Samsung Canada lists up to 500 days, based on internal laboratory tests using simulated typical usage and the battery supplied in the box. Samsung Japan describes about 500 days in typical use and up to about 700 days in power-saving mode. These are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees; actual life changes with usage, phone model, network behavior, and the battery manufacturer. Power-saving mode can extend life, but may alter how actively the tag communicates.

Replace the CR2032

  1. Open the battery compartment with the included tray-eject pin or another suitable method specified for your unit.
  2. Remove the old cell.
  3. Insert a CR2032 with the polarity matching the marking inside the compartment.
  4. Close the compartment securely.
  5. Press the tag button and confirm that it sounds and reconnects in SmartThings.

Dispose of the old coin cell according to local battery-recycling rules. If SmartTag2 remains silent after a fresh battery, repeat the restart or force-restart procedure for your region rather than repeatedly forcing the compartment open.

Water resistance and physical placement

Samsung rates SmartTag2 IP67 under laboratory conditions: submersion in up to 1 m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Samsung advises against beach, pool, and soapy water use, and says resistance can diminish over time. Keep the tag’s compartment closed and avoid deliberately submerging it. Water resistance does not improve BLE performance; a tag inside a metal drawer, vehicle compartment, or thick case may still be harder to locate.

What if I lost the SmartTag2 box before pairing?

The QR-code method is unavailable without the printed code, but you can still use the automatic detection prompt or the manual path Devices → + → Add → Samsung devices → Tag/Tracker.

Does SmartTag2 use GPS or cellular service?

No. Direct communication uses Bluetooth Low Energy. Outside direct range, the Galaxy Find Network may provide an approximate location through nearby participating Galaxy devices; this is not guaranteed real-time GPS tracking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How far away can I find the tag?

Samsung lists up to 120 m for BLE under suitable conditions. Walls, furniture, drawers, vehicles, and other obstacles reduce practical range and accuracy. Compass View’s UWB camera/AR guidance is described by Samsung Japan at about 10 m or less, depending on the phone and surroundings.

Can SmartTag2 go in a pool or seawater?

Samsung’s IP67 rating covers laboratory submersion in up to 1 m of fresh water for up to 30 minutes. Samsung advises against beach, pool, and soapy water use, and water resistance can diminish over time.

How do I know setup really worked?

Look for SmartTag2 in the SmartThings device list, then open SmartThings Find and confirm that the tag appears on the map. A successful sound during activation alone is not the same as completed account registration.

A practical setup checklist

  • Galaxy phone or tablet running Android 9 or later.
  • SmartThings installed or updated.
  • Samsung account signed in.
  • Battery film removed or CR2032 installed correctly.
  • Tag button pressed and startup sound heard.
  • Automatic Add prompt accepted, or manual add/QR scan completed.
  • SmartTag2 visible in SmartThings.
  • Location visible in SmartThings Find.
  • Optional Lost Mode contact details and safety notifications reviewed.
  • UWB and Compass View treated as optional features requiring a supported UWB Galaxy phone, not as prerequisites for setup.

Key limitations to remember

SmartTag2 is a nearby-finding and crowdsourced-location accessory, not a cellular GPS tracker. Its direct connection is BLE, its stated maximum range is up to 120 m in suitable conditions, and offline updates rely on other Galaxy devices in the Find Network. Compass View requires specific UWB hardware and Android 11 or later, while battery-life and water-resistance figures come from Samsung’s stated test conditions. Keeping those boundaries in mind prevents a successful pairing from being mistaken for guaranteed real-time or exact tracking.

How do I connect SmartTag2 to SmartThings Find?

Register it through SmartThings on a compatible Galaxy device. SmartThings links the tag to your Samsung account; there is no separate generic Bluetooth-pairing process. Confirm the device listing and map location in SmartThings Find.

Why won’t my SmartTag2 connect?

Check the battery film, CR2032 orientation and charge, SmartThings updates, Samsung account sign-in, and proximity to the phone. Retry away from crowded wireless environments, then use manual add or the package QR-code scan.

How do I add SmartTag2 if the pop-up doesn’t appear?

In SmartThings, open Devices, tap +, choose Add, select Samsung devices, and choose Tag/Tracker. You can also choose Scan QR code and scan the code on the product box.

Does SmartTag2 work with any Android phone?

Samsung’s published setup requires a compatible Galaxy smartphone or tablet running Android 9.0 or later and a Samsung account. Device and feature availability can vary by market.

How long does the SmartTag2 battery last?

Samsung lists up to 500 days under its laboratory test conditions. Samsung Japan describes about 500 days typically and up to about 700 days in power-saving mode. Actual life varies with use, phone model, and battery manufacturer.

Can I transfer SmartTag2 to another account?

Yes, but first remove it from SmartThings using Devices, the three-dot menu, and Remove device. Then sign in to the other Samsung account and repeat setup.

Is SmartTag2 waterproof?

It is rated IP67 for up to 1 m of fresh-water submersion for up to 30 minutes in laboratory conditions. Samsung advises against beach, pool, and soapy water, and resistance may decline over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Activate SmartTag2, add it through SmartThings with a signed-in Samsung account, and verify both the device listing and map location in SmartThings Find. If the pop-up is missing, manual add and the box QR code are official alternatives. The tag’s up-to-120 m BLE range, crowdsourced offline finding, optional UWB Compass View, replaceable CR2032 battery, and IP67 rating all have conditions and limits, so treat them as manufacturer specifications rather than guarantees of exact, continuous tracking.
