This guide uses Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS on the 64-bit AMD architecture: identify the machine, protect your data, create a bootable USB installer, install Ubuntu to the correct drive, and apply updates before adding services. The published Ubuntu minimums are installation requirements, not a workload recommendation, so size the system for the applications and data you actually plan to run.
Can a Ryzen mini PC work as a home server?
It can. A Ryzen processor implements the 64-bit AMD architecture supported by Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS amd64. AMD also publishes material about Ryzen Embedded mini-PC solutions, demonstrating that the processor family is used in compact systems. Neither fact proves that every consumer Ryzen mini PC has identical Linux support, firmware controls, cooling, storage interfaces or network adapters. Treat the model number, rather than the processor name alone, as the starting point.

Your mini PC is a reasonable server candidate when the manufacturer documents the hardware you need and the machine can remain powered and connected where you intend to use it. A file service, lightweight web application or a few household utilities have different requirements from virtual machines, large databases or continuous media processing. Decide the workload before buying memory or drives.
Verify the exact mini-PC model before changing anything
Record the identity of the machine
Write down the complete model designation, processor model, installed memory, internal drive model and wireless or wired network adapter. Model suffixes often identify different motherboards or storage layouts even when the product name looks similar. Keep this information with the installation notes so later upgrades can be checked against the same configuration.

Check the manufacturer’s documentation
Use the vendor’s manual, specification sheet and support pages for that exact model. Confirm:
- Supported memory type, maximum capacity and whether the memory is replaceable or soldered.
- Every storage position, including the interface and physical form factor accepted by each slot.
- Available network ports and the documented operating-system support for their controllers.
- Firmware or BIOS/UEFI options, including the method for opening the boot menu and updating firmware.
- Whether installing another operating system affects warranty procedures or recovery partitions.
AMD’s Ryzen Embedded mini-PC material describes a product category, not your particular consumer mini PC. Do not infer an undocumented memory limit, SSD size, boot mode or Linux compatibility from that general material.
Confirm the architecture
Ubuntu’s requirements for the 24.04 LTS Server amd64 image explicitly cover 64-bit Intel and AMD systems. A Ryzen mini PC should therefore be selected and configured for the amd64 installer, not an image intended for a different processor architecture. If the manufacturer lists a 64-bit operating mode for your model, retain that documentation with your notes.
Size memory and storage for the services you will run
Make a list of the services, users and data the server will hold. Include the operating system, application files, databases, logs, downloads and backups. Leave room for updates and growth instead of filling the only internal drive on the first day.
| Ubuntu 24.04 LTS amd64 figure | What it means | How to use it when planning a server |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5 GB RAM minimum for an ISO installation | Canonical’s minimum stated for installing the operating system. | Not a validated amount for several services, virtual machines or media workloads. |
| 3 GB RAM or more suggested | Canonical’s suggested installation value. | A starting reference for the OS, not a complete workload design. |
| 5 GB storage minimum for an ISO installation | Minimum space stated for the operating-system installation. | Leaves little practical room for applications, logs or user data. |
| 25 GB storage or more suggested | Canonical’s suggested installation value. | Still does not determine the capacity needed for your files, backups or services. |
These figures come from Canonical’s Ubuntu 24.04 LTS amd64 requirements page, current as accessed in 2026. The page also notes that more complex scenarios can require additional resources. A server that stores photos, runs multiple applications or keeps local backups will normally need more capacity than the installation minimum; determine that amount from your data set and retention plan, not from the table alone.
Plan storage in two separate decisions
- System drive: Verify the mini PC’s supported SSD interface and physical size before purchasing. Reserve space for Ubuntu, updates, applications and logs.
- Data and backup storage: Decide whether user data belongs on a second internal drive or external storage. The Ubuntu installation requirements do not specify a backup design or a suitable capacity for a household.
If you cannot identify the drive interface or maximum supported capacity in the model documentation, pause the purchase and ask the manufacturer. A physically compatible drive can still be unsupported by a particular firmware or thermal design.
Back up data before partitioning
Installing an operating system can erase existing partitions. Ubuntu’s basic installation guidance recommends backing up data before partitioning because a mistake can result in data loss. Copy anything important from the mini PC to another device and verify that the copy opens before proceeding.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.
- Back up documents, photographs, configuration files and license keys you will need later.
- Export any recovery media or recovery information supplied by the manufacturer.
- Disconnect unrelated external drives while installing so the target disk is easier to identify.
- Keep the backup disconnected from the mini PC during partitioning; this reduces the chance of selecting it accidentally.
If the mini PC already contains an operating system you might need, do not assume the Ubuntu installer can preserve it automatically. Read each disk-selection screen carefully and stop if the listed capacity or model does not match the intended target.
Create the Ubuntu Server installation USB
What you need
- A USB flash drive suitable for writing the installer image. Its contents will be overwritten.
- A separate computer with internet access to obtain the Ubuntu Server amd64 image for the release you selected.
- A way to copy any files currently stored on that USB drive before imaging it.
Write the image
- Download the Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS amd64 installer image from Canonical’s Ubuntu Server download page. Select the amd64 image, because that is the 64-bit Intel/AMD architecture supported by the Ryzen system.
- Use an image-writing utility to write the downloaded image to the USB drive. Choose the USB device by its size and name, not merely by its position in the list.
- Let the utility finish and safely eject the drive. Do not copy the ISO file onto the USB as an ordinary document; the drive must be written as bootable installation media.
Ubuntu’s basic installation guide follows this sequence: back up data, obtain the amd64 server image, create bootable USB media and boot the target computer from it. The guide does not require a particular flash-drive brand or capacity, so use media you already trust rather than assuming a specific product is necessary.
Boot the mini PC from USB
Use the model-specific boot process
Insert the prepared USB drive, start or restart the mini PC and open its one-time boot menu. The key and timing vary by manufacturer; use the model’s manual instead of relying on a universal key. Select the USB device and start the Ubuntu installer.
Firmware menus differ between Ryzen mini PCs. The available sources do not establish a universal BIOS/UEFI recipe, virtualization setting or IOMMU requirement. If the USB does not appear, consult the vendor’s instructions and the hardware guidance for the Ubuntu release you selected. Do not change unrelated firmware settings at random.
If the installer does not start
- Recreate the USB image; an incomplete or incorrectly written image is a common first check.
- Try another USB port documented by the manufacturer as boot-capable.
- Reopen the boot menu and verify that you selected the USB device rather than the internal drive.
- Check the vendor’s documented firmware boot options. Record every change so it can be reversed.
- If the drive still is not offered, test the installer USB on another compatible computer to distinguish faulty media from a mini-PC firmware issue.
Install Ubuntu Server step by step
Ubuntu’s installer labels can change between releases, but the basic flow is consistent. Read every screen and select the intended disk deliberately.
- Start the installer: With the USB selected from the boot menu, choose the option to install Ubuntu Server. Select the language and keyboard layout requested by the installer.
- Choose the installation target: When the installer lists storage devices, match the model and capacity to the drive you intend to erase or use. Stop if the expected drive is missing or the capacity is unexpected.
- Review partitioning: The installer may offer guided partitioning. Confirm the proposed disk and the erase or reuse action before accepting it. Ubuntu warns that partitioning mistakes can cause data loss.
- Configure networking: Connect the mini PC to the network you plan to use. Ubuntu’s guide describes an attempt to obtain networking through DHCP; that is an attempt, not a guarantee for every adapter or network. If no connection is detected, record the adapter name and consult the mini-PC and Ubuntu hardware documentation.
- Create the administrator account: Enter the requested user name, password and server name. Choose a hostname that identifies the machine clearly on your home network and avoid changing it casually after services begin using it.
- Complete the installation: Review the final summary, start the installation and wait for it to finish. Remove the USB when prompted, then reboot into the installed system.
The installer may present additional choices depending on the release and detected hardware. The cited basic guide does not establish a universal set of firmware, disk-encryption or application selections for every Ryzen model, so treat unfamiliar options as model- or release-specific rather than applying a one-size-fits-all recipe.

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt update refreshes the local package index. sudo apt upgrade installs available package updates. Run the first command, wait for it to complete, then run the second. If the upgrade asks for confirmation, read the package summary before accepting. Reboot if the system tells you that a restart is required, then sign in again and confirm that the machine reaches the installed system normally.
Keep the installation USB and your notes until the updated system has booted successfully. They can help you recover if a later configuration change prevents a normal start.
Check the installed hardware before adding services
Network connection
Confirm that the wired or wireless adapter you intend to use is recognized and that the mini PC can reach the network. A DHCP attempt during installation does not guarantee a working connection on every adapter, switch or router. If networking is absent, use the exact adapter model and mini-PC model when consulting the vendor’s Linux notes and the Ubuntu release hardware guidance.
Storage visibility
Confirm that the internal drive selected during installation is the drive you expected. If you add a second SSD or an external drive, verify its interface, form factor and supported capacity in the manufacturer’s documentation first. Do not assume that an empty slot accepts every M.2 or 2.5-inch device, or that an external enclosure provides the same reliability as an internal drive.
Memory capacity
Compare the installed memory with the workload plan you wrote before installation. The 1.5 GB minimum and 3 GB suggested Ubuntu figures describe installation requirements; they do not validate a multi-service configuration. If the mini PC’s memory is soldered, the model’s maximum is fixed, so check it before purchase.
Choose a service plan without overloading the mini PC
Once the base operating system is updated, define one service at a time. For each proposed application, write down its expected data size, memory demand, storage location, network exposure and backup needs. The available documentation does not provide service-specific instructions for containers, hypervisors, home-automation platforms, media servers, remote access, firewall rules or backup software. Those components require their own current, service-specific guidance.
- Start with the smallest useful scope: Install only the first service you can support and observe how much memory and storage it consumes.
- Keep data locations explicit: Decide whether application data belongs on the system drive, a second internal drive or external storage before creating folders or databases.
- Separate backups from primary data: A second partition on the same physical drive is not an independent backup. Select backup media and retention based on the value and volume of your data.
- Document changes: Record package installations, hostname changes, storage additions and firmware changes so recovery does not depend on memory.
Compare Ryzen mini PCs by verifiable facts, not the processor label
If you are choosing between models, use a comparison sheet populated from each manufacturer’s documentation. No comparable model specifications or power measurements are established here, so this guide does not rank particular mini PCs or claim an idle-power figure.

Troubleshoot the first installation problems
The USB is not listed
Recheck that the image was written rather than copied, try another port, and use the model-specific boot-menu instructions. If firmware offers multiple boot modes, follow the settings documented for that model and Ubuntu release; there is no single Ryzen-wide setting supported by the available evidence.
The internal drive is missing
Power down and confirm that the drive type and form factor are supported by the manufacturer. If the drive is listed in firmware but not in the installer, consult the Ubuntu release hardware guidance and the vendor’s documentation. Do not proceed with partitioning a different disk just because it is the only one visible.

Networking fails during installation
Ubuntu’s installer attempts DHCP, but the attempt can fail because of the adapter, cable, switch, router or driver support. Finish only if you understand how you will obtain updates afterward, and use the exact adapter model when seeking release-specific guidance.
The machine runs out of space
Revisit the workload inventory rather than treating the 5 GB installation minimum as a capacity target. Remove unneeded data only after confirming it is backed up, and verify that any replacement or additional drive is supported by the mini-PC model.
The system becomes unstable after an upgrade
Record the package operation and any reboot message, then consult Ubuntu’s release documentation for that version. Keep your installation media and backup available. Avoid repeatedly changing firmware or deleting partitions while the cause is unknown.
What a successful setup looks like
You have a model-specific hardware record, a verified backup, and an amd64 Ubuntu Server USB installer. Ubuntu is installed on the intended drive, the machine can reach your network or you have identified the adapter issue, and the first package updates have completed with sudo apt update and sudo apt upgrade. Memory, storage and networking are sized against the services you actually intend to run rather than against the operating system’s minimum installation figures.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
At that point the Ryzen mini PC is ready for deliberate, service-specific configuration. Add applications only after checking their current documentation, and keep hardware compatibility, data protection and available capacity visible in the plan.
