Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA refurbished MacBook is safe to use only after you verify that it is not still linked to the previous owner, erase the old installation with the method appropriate to its hardware, install supported updates, and create your own protected account. Do those checks before copying personal files or signing in to banking, email, or work services.
Start with a security check before entering personal information
Connect the MacBook to power and the internet, then turn it on. The first screen tells you more about the machine’s status than a seller’s description does. A normal Setup Assistant that lets you choose a language and region is a good starting point, but it is not by itself proof that the Mac is free of every management or account issue.

Stop immediately if setup displays Activation Lock or asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account password or device passcode. Do not try to guess the password, create your own account around the prompt, or assume that a later factory reset will solve it. Apple says Activation Lock is designed to prevent others from using a Mac if it is lost or stolen, and the account password or device passcode is required to turn off Find My, erase, or reactivate an eligible Mac.

What a clean handoff looks like
- The Mac reaches Setup Assistant without requesting another person’s credentials.
- No previous owner’s name, Apple Account email address, or organization name appears during activation.
- You can complete setup with your own account after the old installation has been erased.
Do not enter personal passwords, import a browser profile, or connect a work account until these checks are complete. If the Mac was supplied by a business or school, pause even when no personal Apple Account appears: management software can impose policies or ownership controls that an individual buyer cannot remove lawfully.
Identify the Mac before choosing a reset method
The correct erase and startup procedure depends on the processor, security chip, and macOS release. “Refurbished MacBook” is not a single configuration. Use the model information in the box, the purchase listing, or the Mac’s system information to determine which row applies.
| Hardware or software state | What it affects | Usual supported erase route |
|---|---|---|
| Apple silicon Mac (M-series) | Supports modern security architecture and Activation Lock when the other Apple requirements are met. | Erase All Content and Settings when running macOS Monterey 12 or later; otherwise use the model-specific Recovery procedure. |
| Intel Mac with the T2 Security Chip | Can support Activation Lock and has Startup Security Utility controls such as Secure Boot and allowed startup media. | Erase All Content and Settings on macOS Monterey 12 or later; otherwise use macOS Recovery, Disk Utility, and reinstall. |
| Older Intel Mac without T2 | Does not have the same Activation Lock and startup-security feature set as Apple silicon or T2 models. | Use the model-specific macOS Recovery erase and reinstall process. |
| Any eligible hardware on macOS older than Monterey 12 | Erase Assistant may not be available even when the hardware is otherwise compatible. | Follow Apple’s instructions for Recovery, Disk Utility, and macOS reinstall for that model. |
To check the installed release after reaching the desktop, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. The exact labels differ by macOS generation. To identify whether an Intel machine has a T2 chip, use Apple’s current model and security-chip documentation rather than inferring it from the year alone. The distinction matters because an Intel Mac without T2 should not be given instructions intended for Apple silicon or T2 hardware.

You do not remove another person’s account by deleting a local user or by simply wiping files. The previous owner must sign out of Apple services and remove the Mac from their Apple Account, especially Find My. If the Mac is already at the activation screen, the seller can normally complete that removal remotely or authenticate on the Mac when prompted.
- Show the seller the Activation Lock or previous-owner prompt and record the exact message.
- Have the seller sign in with the Apple Account that owns the Mac and turn off Find My for that device.
- Ask the seller to remove the device from their account or device list when Apple’s interface offers that option.
- Restart setup and confirm that the previous owner’s credentials are no longer requested.
- Only then erase the old installation and create your account.
If the seller says they already erased the Mac but the prompt remains, the erase was not enough to release the account lock. Do not pay for an “unlock” service or use a bypass tutorial. Activation Lock is an ownership control, not a routine software error.
Should I factory reset a refurbished MacBook?
Yes, unless you have a documented reason to preserve an existing installation and can independently verify that it contains no other user’s data. A reset removes old user accounts, files, browser sessions, configuration profiles, and cached credentials before your data arrives. Back up anything that must be retained first; erasure is destructive.
Use Erase All Content and Settings when it is offered
Erase Assistant is available on Apple silicon Macs and Intel Macs with the T2 Security Chip running macOS Monterey 12 or later. In macOS, open the system settings or preferences area and look for “Erase All Content and Settings.” The label and location vary by release, so follow the wording shown on the Mac rather than a guide written for a different version.
The assistant removes user accounts and their data, signs out of Apple services, and turns off Find My and Activation Lock for that installation when the required account authentication succeeds. Read each confirmation screen carefully. If the Mac reports that it cannot complete the sign-out or asks for an account you do not own, stop and resolve the ownership problem instead of proceeding.
- Back up any files that legitimately need to be kept.
- Open the Mac’s current system settings or preferences and select Erase All Content and Settings.
- Authenticate with the account currently authorized on the Mac if prompted.
- Review the list of accounts, services, and data that will be removed.
- Confirm the erase and keep the Mac connected to power until it returns to Setup Assistant.
After the restart, do not restore the previous owner’s data. Treat the returned Setup Assistant as the beginning of your own setup.
When Erase All Content and Settings is unavailable
Older macOS releases and Intel Macs without the necessary hardware use a different route. Start the Mac in macOS Recovery using the startup method specified for that model, open Disk Utility, erase the internal system volume as Apple’s instructions describe, and reinstall a supported macOS release. Startup key sequences differ between Apple silicon and Intel systems, so do not transpose one platform’s instructions onto the other.

Disk Utility erasure and macOS reinstallation do not establish that an eligible Mac is free of Activation Lock. Perform the activation check first and verify the result after reinstalling. If setup still requests the former owner’s account, the seller must release it.
Install supported macOS and application updates
Once the Mac is cleanly activated under your ownership, install every update that Apple offers for that model. Turn on automatic updates where practical, and update the browser and applications as well as macOS. The Federal Trade Commission advises keeping operating systems, browsers, and apps current because attackers target software that lacks recent security fixes.
Do not promise that a refurbished Mac can run the newest macOS. Apple limits each release by model, and support varies across MacBook generations. Check the Mac’s model identifier and Apple’s current compatibility list before choosing a target release. If the newest release is unavailable, install the newest release officially supported by that Mac rather than using an unofficial patcher as a security shortcut.
A sensible update order
- Finish the minimum setup required to reach Software Update.
- Install the available macOS update and restart when requested.
- Run Software Update again; some firmware and security updates appear only after the first restart.
- Update applications through their trusted update mechanism or the official app store.
- Enable automatic security and application updates, while keeping enough free storage for them to complete.
If an update fails, keep the Mac on power, verify a stable internet connection, free storage space, and retry. Do not interrupt a firmware update by closing the lid or disconnecting power. For an older Mac that no longer receives security updates, treat that limitation as a purchasing and risk decision rather than assuming a reset makes it current.
Create the buyer’s account and turn on account protections
Use a new or existing Apple Account that belongs to you. Choose a long, unique password and enable two-factor authentication on a trusted phone or other trusted device. Never leave the refurbished Mac signed in to the seller’s account “temporarily.”
After the account is yours, enable Find My for the Mac. On eligible Apple silicon and T2 Macs, Apple lists Apple silicon or T2 hardware, macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, and two-factor authentication among the requirements for Activation Lock. Find My is the feature that enables the lock. The exact controls differ by macOS release, but the result you want is that your account, not the seller’s, owns the Find My association.
Verify the account handoff
- Open the Mac’s Apple Account settings and confirm your email address, not the seller’s, is shown.
- Confirm two-factor authentication is enabled and that you can receive a verification code.
- Check Find My and make sure this Mac appears under your devices.
- Sign out and back in only after you have confirmed that your recovery methods work.
Keep account recovery information available off the Mac. If the computer is lost, damaged, or erased, you still need an independent trusted device or recovery method to regain access.
Configure local-data and startup security carefully
FileVault and the recovery key
FileVault protects data stored on the internal drive if someone removes the drive or obtains the Mac’s unlocked hardware. It is an important control for a portable computer, but the enablement screen and recovery-key process vary by macOS release. Use Apple’s current FileVault instructions for the exact version installed on your Mac before turning it on.
When macOS presents a recovery-key choice, keep a copy somewhere you can reach without the Mac. Do not store the only copy on the encrypted computer it is intended to unlock. If you use an organization-managed account, follow the administrator’s key-escrow procedure instead of creating an unmanaged copy.
Startup Security Utility on T2 Macs
Intel Macs with the T2 Security Chip include Startup Security Utility in macOS Recovery. It governs firmware-password protection, Secure Boot, and which external or removable media may start the Mac. For most personal owners, the default trusted configuration is the safest choice: it verifies signed system software and does not broaden boot permissions unnecessarily.

Do not change Secure Boot or external-media settings merely because the Mac is refurbished. Alter them only for a specific, understood task such as an approved recovery workflow, and restore the strongest practical setting afterward. A forgotten firmware password or overly permissive boot policy can make troubleshooting harder and reduce protection against someone starting another operating system from external media.

After updates and account setup, configure Time Machine or another backup method. A backup protects against drive failure, accidental deletion, ransomware, and a later failed update; it is separate from Activation Lock and does not replace account security.
An external SSD is an optional physical destination for Time Machine. Choose enough capacity for the files and history you need, and keep the backup drive disconnected or otherwise protected when it is not being used if your threat model includes ransomware. Do not assume a particular drive is encrypted unless its documentation explicitly supports that claim.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Connect the backup destination and allow macOS to recognize it.
- Open the current Time Machine settings and select the destination.
- Let the first backup finish before relying on it.
- Open the backup view and restore a small test file so you know the process works.
- Schedule periodic backups and check occasionally that they are completing.
Keep at least one backup independent of the Mac. If the Mac is erased, lost, or locked, a second device or separately stored copy prevents the same incident from destroying both the computer and its recovery data.
Extra checks for work, school, and organization-owned Macs
A Mac that came from an employer, school, or leasing program may be enrolled in device management. Management can install configuration profiles, require a particular Apple Account, restrict settings, or re-enroll the Mac after an erase. Ask the seller for written confirmation that the device has been released from the organization’s management system.
If a management screen appears during Setup Assistant, do not attempt to remove it with a wipe or third-party utility. Contact the organization or seller. A personal buyer should receive a Mac that completes setup without an unexpected remote-management enrollment.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
Activation Lock returns after an erase
The Mac is still associated with the previous owner’s Find My account, or the erase did not complete the required sign-out. Stop setup, contact the seller, and request account removal. Keep proof of purchase. Do not pay for an unofficial bypass.
Erase All Content and Settings is missing
Check the macOS version and hardware. The feature requires macOS Monterey 12 or later on Apple silicon or an Intel Mac with T2. Otherwise use the model-specific Recovery, Disk Utility, and reinstall procedure.
The Mac installs an older system than expected
That may be the newest release supported by the model, or the installer may have restored the system that was available when the Mac was prepared. Run Software Update again and verify the model’s compatibility before attempting anything else.
You cannot verify ownership
Do not add personal data. A refurbished label does not override Apple’s account controls. Ask the seller for a release, involve the retailer’s return process, or use Apple’s support process with proof of purchase.
There is a remote-management prompt
Treat it as an organization-ownership issue, not a normal setup step. Obtain release confirmation from the responsible organization or return the Mac.
