How to Set Up a Racing Wheel for Forza Horizon 6 on Xbox Series X|S and PC

To set up a racing wheel in Forza Horizon 6, first verify that your exact model is listed for your platform, then update its firmware and drivers, connect the wheelbase directly, and create a custom wheel profile in the game. Start with the game and wheel software at their defaults, confirm steering and pedals, and change one force-feedback control at a time.

The Xbox Series X|S and PC versions were announced for May 19, 2026, with Premium Edition early access from May 15. A PlayStation 5 version was announced for later in 2026, but its wheel compatibility should be checked separately when that version’s support list is published.

Check compatibility before connecting anything

Wheel support is platform-specific. An Xbox-certified version of a wheel is not automatically interchangeable with a PC or PlayStation version, even when the product name looks similar. Use the official Forza Support supported-wheels table for the exact model and edition before buying or troubleshooting. The table was published May 19, 2026, and marks some devices as partially supported or awaiting an update.

Prepare the wheel and platform

Update firmware and drivers first

Forza Support’s instruction is explicit: before playing, install the latest drivers and firmware for the wheel. This matters on both PC and Xbox. Xbox players generally need to connect the wheel to a Windows PC or laptop temporarily so the manufacturer’s updater can detect it and install the current firmware.

  1. Identify the exact model and platform version printed on the wheelbase or its packaging.
  2. On a PC, install the manufacturer’s current driver and configuration software. For Logitech G29 and G920 users, this means the latest Logitech G Hub.
  3. Connect the wheelbase to the PC as instructed by the manufacturer and complete every firmware update offered for the base, pedals or attached accessories.
  4. Restart the computer after updating, then disconnect the wheel and reconnect it before opening the game.
  5. If you play on Xbox, move the updated wheel to the console only after the PC update has completed.

Do not launch the game while a firmware update is in progress. A half-completed update can leave the wheel unavailable until the manufacturer’s recovery procedure is run.

Use a direct USB connection

Connect the wheelbase directly to the PC or console. Avoid a USB hub while diagnosing recognition or force feedback. The game can see several USB input devices, but force feedback is sent to the device registered as “Device 1.” If pedals, a shifter, a controller and the wheelbase are all attached, the wrong device can become Device 1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce the setup to one input device

For the first test, unplug competing pedals, shifters, handbrakes and controllers. Leave only the wheelbase and its normal pedal connection attached. After steering and force feedback work, reconnect accessories one at a time. This isolates whether a separate USB device is taking the Device 1 slot or needs its own mapping.

Create and test a custom wheel profile

Do the first configuration in a quiet test environment rather than during a race. The game may not automatically map pedals or shifters that are connected as separate USB devices.

  1. Start Forza Horizon 6 with the wheel already powered and connected.
  2. Open the game’s input settings and choose the wheel controls.
  3. Use the default control profile first. If a pedal, shifter or button is missing, create a custom wheel profile instead of repeatedly changing the default.
  4. Open Advanced Controls > Wheel > Custom Profile.
  5. Move the wheel slowly left and right. Confirm that the steering axis reaches both ends without jumping or remaining offset.
  6. Press the accelerator and brake through their full travel. Confirm that each axis is assigned to the intended pedal and returns to zero when released.
  7. Test a clutch, handbrake, shifter or button only after the primary steering and pedal axes respond correctly.
  8. Save the profile with a clear name, then select it before entering a race.

If the wheel is detected but a pedal is not, disconnect other USB input devices and repeat the custom-profile mapping. A separately connected pedal set may need to be assigned manually even when the wheelbase itself is recognized.

Choose Normal or Simulation steering

Forza Support describes Normal steering as the more stable starting mode. Simulation turns off the layered steering systems that assist control, giving the wheel’s own steering response more influence. The game’s input layers are disabled whenever a wheel is used, so these modes do not behave exactly like controller steering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose Normal if you want a forgiving first setup, easier correction of slides and predictable road-car behavior.
  • Choose Simulation if you want the least intervention and are prepared to tune rotation, damping and force strength carefully.

Use one mode consistently while tuning. Switching modes while changing several sliders makes it difficult to tell which change altered the car’s response.

Understand the wheel controls before tuning

Steering Axis Deadzone Inside

This creates a dead area around the center of the wheel. Leave it at zero in a healthy setup. Increase it only when the car cannot travel straight because the wheel or sensor reports a small center offset. A large deadzone makes the car unresponsive around center and can hide a hardware problem.

Invert Force Feedback

Enable this only when the forces pull in the wrong direction. Correct force feedback should resist a turn and communicate the tires’ aligning torque. If the wheel pulls farther into a corner when it should load up against your hands, toggle Invert Force Feedback and test again.

Force Feedback Scale

This controls overall wheel strength. Increasing it can make detail easier to feel, but excessive gain saturates or clips the signal: several different impacts then feel equally strong. Reduce the scale when the wheel is constantly at its mechanical limit or every curb produces the same maximum jolt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Center Spring Scale

Center Spring Scale adds dynamic centering force. A little can help a light wheel return toward center, but too much masks the tire-aligning torque that tells you when the front tires are losing grip. Tune it only after confirming that force direction and overall scale are correct.

Wheel Damper Scale

Damper adds resistance to wheel movement. More damping can calm oscillation, but it can also overpower slip information and make drifting harder. If the wheel feels heavy, slow to change direction or disconnected from a slide, reduce this value.

Steering Sensitivity and rotation angle

Steering Sensitivity changes how hardware rotation maps to the car’s steering lock. The driver or wheel software also has a physical rotation setting. Changing both at once can produce erratic steering because the game is remapping an already remapped input. Set the wheel software’s rotation first, then adjust in-game sensitivity in small steps.

Published starting values for supported wheels

Manufacturer values are baselines, not universal answers. They depend on the wheel’s motor, firmware, rotation range and the driver’s preference. Apply them only after the game recognizes the wheel and pedals.

Fanatec published the PC and Xbox baselines on May 15, 2026. The Xbox row adds Force Feedback Scale 1.5 and Steering Rotation 1440 while retaining Simulation, Invert Force Feedback Off and Wheel Damper Scale 0.2. Thrustmaster’s Xbox guidance specifically says to open Settings > Advanced Controls and reduce Wheel Damper Scale for the TMX, T128 or T248.

A reliable tuning sequence

Change one control at a time and drive the same short route after each change. Record the old value so you can undo a change that makes the wheel worse.

  1. Return to a known baseline. Set the game and wheel software to defaults, then apply only the platform-specific manufacturer baseline if your model has one.
  2. Correct direction. Test Invert Force Feedback before changing strength. A reversed signal makes every later adjustment misleading.
  3. Set rotation. Choose the wheel software’s rotation angle, restart the game if the driver requires it, and verify that the in-game steering reaches full lock without an abrupt jump.
  4. Set overall strength. Raise or lower Force Feedback Scale until corners, curbs and impacts remain distinguishable rather than permanently clipping.
  5. Reduce excess resistance. Lower Wheel Damper Scale if the wheel feels slow or suppresses slide information. On the specified Thrustmaster Xbox models, reduction is the manufacturer’s recommendation.
  6. Adjust centering. Add only enough Center Spring Scale to control unwanted oscillation. Remove it if it hides tire loading.
  7. Address center drift. Add a small Steering Axis Deadzone Inside only when the car will not run straight with the wheel physically centered.
  8. Fine-tune sensitivity last. Make small changes after rotation and force behavior are stable.

Troubleshoot no force feedback

The wheel is visible but completely weak or empty

  • Close the game and unplug every competing USB controller, shifter and pedal set.
  • Connect the wheelbase directly, not through a hub.
  • Reconnect the wheelbase first so it becomes Device 1.
  • Launch the game and test the steering in Advanced Controls > Wheel > Custom Profile.
  • Confirm that Invert Force Feedback is not reversing the effect and that Force Feedback Scale is not set to zero.

The wheel pulls into the corner instead of resisting

Toggle Invert Force Feedback, then test the same corner again. Do not compensate by adding damper or center spring; those controls change resistance and centering, not force direction.

Force feedback works intermittently

Intermittent feedback often indicates a connection or device-order problem. Remove the USB hub, use a different direct port, reconnect the wheelbase before other devices and check firmware again from the manufacturer’s software. If the problem returns only after a shifter or separate pedals are connected, leave that accessory disconnected while you create a custom profile and then add it back after saving.

Steering works but pedals do not

Open the custom wheel profile and map each pedal manually. Separate USB pedals may not be assigned automatically. Move each pedal through its full travel during mapping and verify that the axis returns to zero when released.

Thrustmaster Ferrari 458 Spider Racing Wheel (Xbox Series X/S & One)
  • The most popular racing wheel on Forza.
  • Easy to use: official plug-and-play Xbox racing wheel with USB recognition.
  • Works on Xbox Series X/S & XBOX One
  • Comprehensive controls for all driving actions, with 9 action buttons, 1 Manettino dial, 1 D-pad, 1 Xbox Guide button and 1 pairing detection LED for Kinect.
  • Wheel is 11 inches / 28 cm in diameter — a 7:10 scale replica of the wheel on the real Ferrari 458 Spider sports car.

The wheel feels too heavy or makes drifting difficult

Reduce Wheel Damper Scale first. If the wheel still feels saturated, lower Force Feedback Scale. Avoid raising Center Spring Scale to solve heaviness; spring force can cover the tire information you need to catch a slide.

The car wanders even though the wheel is centered

Check physical alignment and firmware calibration before adding deadzone. If the hardware is centered but the game still reports a small offset, add only a minimal Steering Axis Deadzone Inside. A large value creates a noticeable delay around center.

Choosing a wheel setup for your platform

Compatibility certification should decide the shortlist before mechanism, torque or accessory comparisons. The official table is the authority for whether a particular model is supported on Xbox Series X|S or PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision factor What to verify Why it matters
Platform certification Xbox Series X|S, PC or both for the exact model PC and Xbox versions are not interchangeable across every product line.
Support completeness Full listing versus an asterisk for partial or pending support Partial support may leave an accessory, telemetry feature or force-feedback behavior unavailable until an update.
Force-feedback mechanism Gear, belt or direct-drive design, as specified by the manufacturer The mechanism changes noise, smoothness, resistance and the amount of tuning required.
Pedals Included pedals, separate USB pedals or no pedals Separate devices may need manual mapping and can affect Device 1 ordering during setup.
Software workflow Firmware updater, driver package and platform-specific configuration utility Xbox owners may need a PC or laptop to complete updates before using the console.
Expansion hardware Shifter, handbrake and additional controllers Each extra USB device adds another mapping and device-order variable.

A wheel with more hardware capability is not automatically the better FH6 choice if its platform support is partial. Confirm the listing, update path and pedal arrangement first; then compare feel, rotation range and available force strength within the models that are actually certified for your platform.

Xbox and PC setup differences

Xbox Series X|S

Use the Xbox-compatible edition of the wheel. Perform firmware updates on a PC or laptop before moving the wheel to the console. Keep the first console test simple: wheelbase and its normal pedals, direct connection, no hub, and no other controller attached. Fanatec’s published Xbox baseline uses Simulation steering, Invert Force Feedback Off, Wheel Damper Scale 0.2, Force Feedback Scale 1.5 and Steering Rotation 1440. For the listed Thrustmaster models, reduce Wheel Damper Scale in the game’s Advanced Controls when feedback feels overly damped.

PC

Install the manufacturer’s current driver and configuration software before launching FH6. PC users can usually perform firmware updates and inspect axis movement in that utility, which makes it easier to separate a hardware problem from an in-game mapping problem. Fanatec’s published PC baseline is Simulation steering, Invert Force Feedback Off and Wheel Damper Scale 0.2; it does not state matching PC values for Force Feedback Scale or Steering Rotation.

What success looks like

  • The exact wheel model appears in the official platform support list.
  • Firmware and drivers report current versions.
  • The wheelbase is connected directly and is Device 1 during the test.
  • Steering, accelerator and brake reach their full ranges in the custom profile.
  • Force feedback resists turns in the correct direction without constant clipping.
  • Damper and center spring add control without masking tire slip.
  • Only one tuning slider has changed between test runs.

Once those checks pass, save the profile and reconnect additional accessories one at a time. If adding a device removes force feedback, return to the Device 1 and custom-profile steps rather than changing every force slider at once.
