Xbox and PC compatibility lists are different, while PC DirectInput support covers additional hardware but can require manual mapping.
There is no universal best force-feedback preset. Use the profile made for your wheel as a baseline, compare changes on the same car and track, and adjust filter, dampener, angle and overall force to solve the specific problem you feel.

What you need before connecting the wheel
Identify the complete model name and the platform you will use. A Logitech G923 for Xbox, for example, is not the same compatibility case as a similarly named PC-only device. The official Forza Motorsport wheel list separates Xbox Series X|S and PC hardware, and the lists published in 2023 may not include every later wheel or firmware revision.
- The exact wheel-base model and platform variant (Xbox, PC, or both).
- The pedal set, shifter or handbrake you intend to use.
- A stable desk, table, cockpit or stand that can resist steering torque.
- The correct power supply and USB cable, connected according to the wheel maker’s instructions.
- Current wheel firmware and the game installed on the intended platform.
Do not buy a stand based only on a brand name. Check that its clamp spacing, mounting holes and pedal tray fit your exact base and pedal set. Xbox Wire specifically describes clamp attachment for the Thrustmaster T128X and T248X; that detail should not be assumed for every other model.

Does your wheel work with Forza Motorsport?
Check the official wheel-support list for the platform you actually use before changing settings. Xbox console support and PC support are not interchangeable. The Forza Community list includes Logitech G920 and G923 models, numerous Fanatec and Thrustmaster devices, and Moza R9 variants on its PC list. Its Xbox list contains a different selection. Treat that August 2023 list as a compatibility reference, not a guarantee that every newer product is covered.
| Platform | What the official lists establish | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | A curated list of supported Logitech, Thrustmaster and Fanatec wheels, including examples such as Logitech G920 and G923. | Use the Xbox portion of the list and the exact model name. A PC listing alone is not proof of Xbox support. |
| PC | The PC list includes Logitech G29, G920 and G923, additional older devices, Fanatec and Thrustmaster hardware, and Moza R9 variants. | Use the PC list, then confirm that Windows and the game see the wheel and pedals. |
| PC DirectInput | Forza Motorsport supports DirectInput, allowing a broader range of input devices and manual remapping. | Expect more setup work. DirectInput support does not mean every wheel behaves identically or receives the same automatic profile as a listed device. |
Xbox Wire’s October 11, 2023 guide says Logitech, Thrustmaster and Fanatec partnered on Designed for Xbox setups. It reports that supported wheels receive a game profile with primary buttons pre-mapped and force feedback calibrated by Turn 10. That profile is the best starting point when your exact device is recognized.
Mount and connect the hardware
- Secure the wheel base. Clamp or bolt it to a rigid surface following the manufacturer’s instructions. A soft, flexing desk can make a correctly tuned wheel feel vague and can amplify unwanted movement.
- Position the pedals. Keep the pedal board from sliding under braking. If your stand has an adjustable tray, tighten it before calibration.
- Connect power first where required. Use the supplied power adapter and avoid sharing a loose extension connection with high-load equipment.
- Connect pedals and accessories to the wheel base. A pedal set connected to the wrong port may leave the wheel detected but produce no throttle or brake input.
- Connect USB directly to the console or PC. If detection is intermittent, remove hubs and test another direct USB port.
- Start the platform and then the game. Let the wheel complete its startup calibration without holding or obstructing the rim.
Set up a supported wheel on Xbox
- Turn on the Xbox with the wheel powered and connected.
- Launch Forza Motorsport and open Settings, then Controls (the exact submenu wording can vary with game updates).
- Select the detected wheel profile rather than a generic gamepad profile.
- Check steering left and right, throttle, brake, clutch if fitted, shifter positions and every primary button. Press each control once and confirm that the correct on-screen input responds.
- Save the profile before driving. If the game does not detect the wheel, close the game, power-cycle the wheel, reconnect USB, and launch again.
- Drive a short test session before changing force feedback. The automatic profile and Turn 10 calibration provide a reference point for later adjustments.
Xbox Wire reports that the Logitech Pro Racing Wheel is specified at 11 Nm of force feedback. That is a hardware rating, not a lap-time result or evidence that it is the best choice for every driver.

- Connect the wheel and pedals, then let the manufacturer’s software or Windows finish device detection according to the wheel’s manual.
- Start Forza Motorsport and open the controls page. Choose the detected wheel if it appears as a named device.
- For a device using DirectInput, select the DirectInput entry and map steering, throttle, brake, clutch, shifter and buttons manually as needed.
- Use the game’s input display to verify that the steering returns to center and that pedal travel reaches both zero and full input without sticking.
- Save the control profile, restart the game if a newly connected device is not listed, and then test force feedback at low speed.
DirectInput broadens the range of devices that can produce an input, but it is not a promise of automatic button mapping or identical force-feedback behavior. Keep a written note or screenshot of your working assignments before experimenting.

Check the control mapping before tuning force feedback
Force feedback cannot correct a reversed or misassigned axis. In the controls screen, verify these items in order:
- Steering: the on-screen wheel follows the physical rim smoothly in both directions and returns to center.
- Throttle and brake: each pedal moves on its own axis and reaches full travel only at the end of the physical stroke.
- Clutch and shifter: an H-pattern or sequential shifter reports the intended gear and does not trigger adjacent gears.
- Buttons: menu navigation, pause, rewind, look controls and radio functions are assigned to controls you can reach without releasing the wheel.
- Dead zones and inversion: change these only when the input display shows a real center gap, unwanted movement or reversed travel.
What the main force-feedback controls do
Force level or overall strength
Overall strength determines how much torque the game requests from the wheel. Raise it only until cornering loads and surface detail are clear without making every kerb or collision overpowering. A stronger setting is not automatically more realistic, and it can exceed what a small desk clamp or a driver’s grip can safely manage.
FFB Filter
Logitech explains that higher filter values make its wheel feel smoother, while lower values feel more raw. Filtering can reduce high-frequency texture and vibration; reducing it can reveal sharper detail but may also expose noise or oscillation. Change it in small steps and keep the car, track and weather identical for each comparison.
Dampener
Dampening resists rapid wheel movement. Logitech says it can temper the quick reactions of a direct-drive wheel and may help with oscillation. Too much dampening can make the wheel feel slow to respond, so use the minimum change that settles the behavior you are trying to fix.

- Immersive Gaming Experience: Perfect for PlayStation 5, PS4 and PC gaming titles, the Driving Force simulates the feeling of driving a real car with precision steering and pressure-sensitive pedals
- Premium Control: The Driving Force feedback racing wheel provides a detailed simulation of driving a real car, with helical gearing delivering smooth, quiet steering and a hand-stitched leather cover
- Customizable Pedals: These pressure-sensitive nonlinear brake pedals provide a responsive, accurate braking feel on a sturdy base - with adjustable pedal faces for finer control
- 900-Degree Rotation: Lock-to-lock rotation of the Driving Force means you can turn the wheel around two and a half times, hand over hand on wide turns - just like a real F1 race car
- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
If the wheel begins oscillating after you release it, Logitech advises keeping hold of an active wheel and pausing before taking hold again. Do not continue driving while the rim is rapidly swinging on its own.
Wheel angle
Angle sets the wheel’s overall response range. A large physical rotation range makes steering inputs more gradual; a smaller range makes the same hand movement produce a larger in-game change. The wheel angle and the game’s steering geometry must agree, or the car can feel unusually sensitive or slow.
TF Audio
On Logitech’s Pro profile, TF Audio is listed at 100. This control is part of that wheel-specific profile; it is not a universal target for other devices. If a setting changes audible or tactile effects rather than steering torque, evaluate it separately from the force level.

| Setting | PC | Xbox | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compatibility Mode | PRO | PRO | Logitech’s profile for its Pro wheel. |
| FFB Filter | 8 | 8 | Higher values feel smoother; lower values feel more raw, according to Logitech. |
| Dampener | 15 | 15 | May temper rapid direct-drive reactions and help oscillation. |
| TF Audio | 100 | 100 | Published in the same Pro-wheel profile. |
| Angle | 1080 degrees | 1080 degrees | Sets the overall response range. |
These are Logitech’s published starting values, not an independently tested recommendation and not a universal Forza Motorsport preset. Do not copy them to a G923, a Thrustmaster wheel or a Fanatec base unless the manufacturer provides the same profile for that exact hardware.
Device-specific notes
Logitech G923, G920 and G29
The official compatibility material lists the G923 and G920 for Xbox and the G29, G920 and G923 among PC examples. Select the exact platform profile and confirm the pedals and buttons after detection. The Pro-wheel numbers above do not apply automatically to these models.
Thrustmaster T128X and T248X
Xbox Wire identifies both as clamp-mounted Xbox setups. A separate Thrustmaster support result for the TMX says that, on Xbox, reducing the in-game Wheel Damper Scale can improve force feedback for the TMX, T128 or T248. The support result does not establish an exact value, so adjust gradually rather than entering a made-up number, and do not extend that advice to unrelated models.

Xbox Wire describes the T248X drive system as having a 40% power increase compared with the T128X. That is a vendor/product description reported in the 2023 article, not an independent comparison test.

Fanatec CSL DD bundles are among the Xbox Wire examples of supported racing setups. Confirm the exact Xbox-compatible bundle and wheel-side accessory combination; a PC-compatible Fanatec component is not automatically an Xbox-compatible one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable tuning method
- Choose a reference session. Use one familiar car and track, the same assists, weather and camera, and a short repeatable section with corners and kerbs.
- Record the baseline. Write down every force-feedback value before changing anything. If the result is worse, restore the baseline rather than guessing.
- Change one control. Adjust filter, dampener, angle or overall force separately. Multiple simultaneous changes prevent you from knowing which control solved the problem.
- Drive several corners. Evaluate center feel, corner loading, kerb detail and return-to-center behavior, not a single bump.
- Check stability. If the wheel oscillates, reduce the source of rapid response with a small dampener or filter change and keep both hands available.
- Save a named profile. Keep a baseline profile and a preferred profile so you can recover after a firmware or game update.
| Symptom | Likely control to examine | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel feels too raw or noisy | FFB Filter | Increase filtering slightly, then repeat the same reference lap. |
| Wheel reacts too slowly | Dampener or excessive filtering | Reduce dampening or filtering in a small step, then check stability. |
| Wheel oscillates when released | Dampener, filter, overall force and mounting | Hold the wheel, pause if necessary, inspect the mount, and make one stabilizing change at a time. |
| Cornering force is overwhelming | Overall strength or angle | Lower the requested force before attempting finer detail adjustments. |
| Steering is twitchy | Angle mismatch or incorrect axis calibration | Confirm the physical angle and in-game response, then verify the steering axis and center. |
| Kerbs feel absent | Filter, dampener or effect balance | Reduce excessive filtering or dampening cautiously; do not compensate by making every force stronger. |
Choosing a wheel and mounting approach
If you still need hardware, choose by compatibility and setup requirements before torque claims. The following comparisons use only details established by the cited platform material.
| Option | Compatibility evidence | Force-feedback or drive detail | Pedals and mounting | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Logitech G923 | Listed for Xbox and PC examples, with the exact platform variant to be checked. | Not stated in the cited material. | Identified as a wheel-and-pedal setup; mounting method not stated. | Readers wanting a supported, conventional entry setup. |
| Logitech Pro Racing Wheel | Xbox Wire describes an Xbox setup; Logitech publishes profiles for PC and Xbox. | Direct-drive class; Xbox Wire reports an 11 Nm specification. | Exact included accessories and mounting hardware are not stated here. | Drivers seeking a higher-end direct-drive tier and willing to tune a stronger wheel. |
| Thrustmaster T128X | Named by Xbox Wire as a Designed for Xbox setup. | Xbox Wire reports the T248X as having 40% more drive-system power than the T128X. | Clamp-based desk or table attachment; included pedal details are not stated here. | A compact Xbox setup where desk mounting is practical. |
| Thrustmaster T248X | Named by Xbox Wire as a Designed for Xbox setup. | Vendor-described 40% power increase over T128X. | Clamp-based desk or table attachment; included pedal details are not stated here. | Users wanting the T248X feature tier and a clamp mount. |
| Fanatec CSL DD-based setup | Named by Xbox Wire among supported setups; verify the exact console bundle. | Specific torque and included controls are not stated in the cited material. | Bundle contents and mounting details depend on the exact configuration. | Drivers prepared to assemble a more modular setup. |
None of these specifications establishes faster lap times. A rigid mount, correct compatibility and a controllable force signal matter more than selecting a wheel solely by a headline torque number.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The wheel is not detected
- Confirm the exact model is on the correct Xbox or PC list.
- Reconnect power and USB, then restart the console or PC and the game.
- Test a direct USB connection instead of a hub.
- On PC, confirm that the device appears through the manufacturer’s software or as a DirectInput device.
- If the model is absent from the list, do not assume a different model’s profile will work; check current manufacturer and game support information.
The game detects the wheel but buttons or pedals are wrong
- Open the controls profile and map each axis manually.
- Check that pedals are connected to the wheel base rather than an unused or incompatible port.
- Look for an inverted axis or a center dead zone before changing force feedback.
- Save the profile and restart the game if the new mapping is not applied.
There is no force feedback
- Make sure the wheel has its required external power connected.
- Confirm that the game selected the wheel profile, not a gamepad or generic keyboard profile.
- Check that the wheel is not in a compatibility mode intended for another title.
- On PC, verify that the DirectInput device is the active control source.
- Test the wheel at low speed and restore the manufacturer’s baseline before making further changes.
Force feedback clips, feels heavy or becomes unstable
- Lower overall force first if steering loads are overwhelming.
- Inspect the clamp or bolts; movement at the base can feel like unstable feedback.
- Use small filter or dampener changes and compare on the same reference section.
- Stop driving if the wheel oscillates violently. Hold it securely, pause, and only resume after the motion is controlled.
Safety and long-term consistency
Keep fingers clear of spokes and shifter mechanisms during automatic startup calibration. Use both hands when force feedback is active, especially on a direct-drive wheel. Do not let children or pets near the pedals or moving rim while the wheel is powered.
Save a known-good profile after every major game or firmware update. If a new update changes the feel, compare it with that profile before rebuilding your settings. Recheck the mount periodically, because a clamp that loosens can change steering response even when every software value is unchanged.
Final setup checklist
- Exact wheel model and platform pairing verified.
- Wheel base and pedals secured on a stable surface.
- Power, pedal and USB connections checked.
- Supported profile or DirectInput device selected.
- Steering, throttle, brake, shifter and buttons tested.
- Manufacturer baseline recorded.
- One force-feedback control changed at a time.
- Reference car, track and conditions kept consistent.
- Oscillation stopped before continuing to drive.
With that process, the automatic profile gives you a reliable starting point without locking you into someone else’s feel. Tune only the control related to the problem you can describe, and keep the exact wheel and platform in mind whenever you compare settings.
