The best PS5 picture and sound come from matching the console to the equipment you already own, then checking what signal the complete HDMI and audio chain is actually using. Start with Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output and Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Confirm the negotiated resolution, HDR, refresh-rate and VRR status before changing options. In most normal setups, leave resolution and transfer rate on automatic, enable features your display and games support, calibrate HDR, and choose the audio path that fits your speakers, headphones or amplifier.
This guide follows Sony’s current PS5 support menus and explains the trade-offs behind each setting, including 4K HDR, 4K at 120 Hz, VRR, ALLM, HDMI routing, amplifier configuration and both forms of PS5 3D audio.

Check the signal before changing settings
PS5 automatically detects the connected display’s capabilities. With Resolution set to Automatic, it selects the highest resolution available to the console and display. The useful first step is therefore not forcing 4K or 120 Hz, but reading the signal the system has negotiated.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Read Current Video Output Signal. This shows the active resolution, refresh rate, HDR status and related output information.
- Open the connected HDMI-device information on the same screen to see what the television or monitor reports as supported.
- Check the display’s own information panel as well, because a receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device between the PS5 and screen can change the capabilities being advertised.
For the cleanest diagnosis, connect the PS5 directly to the display. If you need an intermediary for sound or switching, every device and HDMI port in that path must support the signal you want.

Sony’s PS5 resolution guide documents the Video Output screen, compatibility checks and the 4K/120 Hz troubleshooting process.
Set the core picture options
Resolution
Leave Resolution on Automatic for a typical television or monitor. This allows the console to use the highest mode that the connected chain confirms. Select 2160p only when you are deliberately setting 4K on a compatible display and have a reason not to use automatic detection.
A 4K television does not guarantee that every game will render internally at 4K; this menu controls the console’s output signal. Game-specific resolution and performance modes remain controlled by each title.
1440p output testing
If you use a 1440p monitor or want to verify how a display handles that signal, choose the 1440p test option in the Video Output menu when it is available. Sony says the PS5 can test 1440p output across SDR and HDR, 60 Hz and 120 Hz, and VRR when the display supports those combinations. Apply the result only after confirming that the monitor reports the mode correctly.
120 Hz Output
Turn on 120 Hz Output when the display supports 120 Hz and you play games that offer a 120-fps or 120-Hz mode. The option does not create a 120-Hz signal if the television, HDMI port, cable or intermediary cannot carry it. A game must also support the mode; many games continue to run at 30 or 60 frames per second.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)
Enable VRR when your display supports it and you want the screen to synchronize its refresh timing with supported games. VRR behavior and usable ranges vary by television or monitor, so confirm the display’s own VRR or game mode is enabled. If a particular game or screen behaves poorly, disable VRR temporarily and compare the result rather than assuming the console is defective.
ALLM and low-latency mode
ALLM can tell a compatible television to switch automatically to its low-latency or game mode while you play. The PS5 does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running, so the television may use a different picture mode during streaming or other video playback.
Configure HDR without washing out SDR content
Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR. You will normally see these choices:
| HDR setting | What the PS5 does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| On When Supported | Outputs HDR for HDR-compatible games and video, while unsupported apps and games remain SDR. | A sensible starting point when you want SDR material to stay in its native format. |
| Always On | Converts unsupported content to HDR output. | Use only if you prefer the resulting appearance on your particular display and content. |
These modes are not a universal quality ranking. Compare the same game or app on your actual television, because tone mapping and picture processing differ between displays.
Run Adjust HDR
- Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
- Follow each on-screen calibration page. Adjust the image until the instructions indicate the correct level, using the display’s normal HDR picture mode.
- After calibration, check a familiar HDR game or scene and make sure the television has not switched to a dim, vivid or store-demo mode.
HDR calibration settings are stored on the console, while the television may apply its own tone-mapping controls. If you later change the TV’s HDR picture mode, recheck the result rather than recalibrating the PS5 repeatedly. Sony’s menu behavior and calibration flow are described in its HDR support instructions.

Get 4K at 120 Hz working
When 4K/120 Hz is missing, test the entire chain instead of changing random options. Sony notes that HDMI 2.1 support and 4K/120-Hz behavior vary across equipment and are not fully consistent across the market.
- Confirm the display specification. The television or monitor must explicitly support 4K at 120 Hz. Some models support 120 Hz only at lower resolutions, or only on particular HDMI inputs.
- Update display firmware. Install the latest firmware offered by the display manufacturer before diagnosing the PS5.
- Use the right cable. Start with the HDMI cable included with the PS5. If it is unavailable or you are replacing a suspect cable, use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz.
- Connect directly. Temporarily remove receivers, soundbars, switches and capture devices. Connect the PS5 to the display’s suitable HDMI 2.1 port.
- Enable the display’s required mode. Some televisions call this enhanced format, input signal plus, 4K mode or a similar HDMI setting. The exact label differs by manufacturer.
- Check PS5 output. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, set Resolution to Automatic or 2160p while testing. Leave Video Transfer Rate on Automatic during this diagnosis.
- Read Current Video Output Signal again. Confirm whether the console now reports 3840 × 2160, 120 Hz and the expected HDR or VRR state.
If direct connection works but routing through another device does not, that intermediary or one of its ports is the limiting component. You can keep the direct video connection and route audio separately if your equipment allows it.
Fix flicker and unstable 4K output
A flickering 4K image can mean the HDMI chain cannot maintain the selected combination of resolution, refresh rate, HDR, color format and VRR. In Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, try Video Transfer Rate -1. If the picture remains unstable, try -2.
These settings reduce the signal bandwidth the console attempts to use. They can stabilize a marginal connection, but they may also remove some output combinations. After each change, reread Current Video Output Signal and check whether 4K, 120 Hz, HDR or VRR is still available. Return to Automatic when the connection is stable and the full target mode works.
Set up PS5 sound for your actual equipment
Choose the output device
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose Output Device and select the television, connected headset or other device you want to hear.
- Review automatic switching. The PS5 can switch output when a device such as a headset is connected, which is useful if you alternate between TV speakers and headphones.
Sound follows a different path from video in many systems. A headset connected to the controller, a USB headset, TV speakers, an optical connection and an AV receiver expose different controls. Select the device that is physically carrying the audio before adjusting formats.

Match HDMI Device Type
Set HDMI Device Type to match the equipment connected through HDMI. If you select AV amplifier, the PS5 exposes additional controls for the amplifier’s channel count and speaker positions.
- Enter the amplifier’s channel count so the console knows whether it is feeding a stereo, 5.1, 7.1 or another supported layout.
- Adjust speaker-position information to correspond to the actual arrangement in the room.
- Use the amplifier’s own input and decoding settings to confirm that it is receiving the intended signal.
If your HDMI connection goes only to a television, use the device type that matches the television rather than selecting AV amplifier simply because an amplifier exists elsewhere in the room.
Choose Audio Format (Priority)
Audio Format (Priority) affects the format used by games and video apps, but the useful choices depend on the connected equipment. A television may accept different formats from an AV amplifier, and an app can have its own audio setting. The disc player, for example, may expose separate controls. Change one setting at a time, then verify the receiver or television’s information display and listen for missing channels, dropouts or unexpected stereo output.
Sony’s detailed menu descriptions for output devices, amplifier channels and format priority are in its PS5 audio-output guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse 3D audio with TV speakers
PS5 can create a room-measured 3D-audio profile for the television speakers. It is preference-dependent: Sony specifically recommends comparing stereo and 3D audio rather than assuming the processed mode will sound better in every room.

- Sit in your usual listening position, facing the television.
- Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV).
- Follow the room-measurement prompts. The PS5 uses the wireless controller’s built-in microphone to measure the sound from that seat.
- Listen to the comparison and keep stereo or 3D audio according to your preference.
Measure again if you move the television, change your seating position or substantially alter the room. A profile created from one seat is not a universal room correction for every listener.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Personalize 3D audio for headphones
- Connect the headphones you intend to use.
- Go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Choose the option to create a personalized profile and follow the prompts, or select one of Sony’s five preset settings.
- Compare the result with ordinary stereo in a familiar game. Keep the profile that gives you the clearest positional cues and most natural tone.
Headphone 3D audio does not require a particular headset model, but the perceived effect depends on the headphones, fit, volume and your hearing. Presets are a practical fallback when you do not want to complete the personalized measurement. The room-measurement and headphone-profile procedures are covered in Sony’s 3D-audio instructions.
Choose the sound path that fits your setup
| Sound path | Important PS5 controls | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| TV speakers | Output Device, HDMI Device Type, TV-speaker 3D audio and room measurement. | Listen to stereo and 3D audio from your normal seat; room placement and television processing matter. |
| Headphones | Output Device, automatic switching and 3D Audio (Headphones). | Compare the personalized profile or five presets with stereo at a comfortable, consistent volume. |
| AV amplifier | HDMI Device Type set to AV amplifier, channel count, speaker positions and Audio Format (Priority). | Verify the physical speaker layout and the format shown by the amplifier. |
There is no single best path for every owner. Headphones may suit late-night play, TV speakers require careful seating and room placement, and an amplifier offers the most channel-specific configuration when the speakers are correctly installed.
A complete setup order you can follow
- Establish the physical path. Connect the PS5 directly to the display for initial testing, or document every receiver, soundbar, switch and cable in the chain.
- Read the negotiated video signal. Use Current Video Output Signal and connected HDMI-device information before forcing a resolution.
- Set baseline video. Keep Resolution and Video Transfer Rate on Automatic, then enable 120 Hz Output and VRR only when the display and games support them.
- Configure HDR. Start with On When Supported if you want unsupported content to remain SDR, run Adjust HDR and compare the result with your display’s normal HDR mode.
- Stress-test the desired mode. Use a game that supports 4K, 120 Hz or VRR and confirm the active signal again. If the image flickers, try transfer rate -1 and then -2 while checking which features remain available.
- Configure audio. Select the real output device, match HDMI Device Type, enter amplifier channels and speaker positions when applicable, and choose Audio Format (Priority) based on what the equipment accepts.
- Measure optional 3D audio. Use TV-speaker room measurement from the normal seat or create a headphone profile, then compare with stereo.
- Recheck after hardware changes. Moving the TV, changing seating, replacing a cable or inserting an intermediary can alter both the negotiated video signal and the useful audio settings.
Common symptoms and the fastest checks
| Symptom | First checks | Likely decision |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 does not show 4K | Read Current Video Output Signal; verify the display input, cable and intermediary devices; leave Resolution on Automatic. | If the display does not advertise 4K through the chain, forcing 2160p will not create it. |
| 4K works but 120 Hz does not | Confirm the display’s 4K/120-Hz specification, update firmware, use the suitable HDMI 2.1 port, enable its enhanced mode and test direct connection. | Keep Video Transfer Rate on Automatic while diagnosing. |
| Picture flickers | Check cables and intermediary devices, then try Video Transfer Rate -1 and -2. | Use the lowest restriction that stabilizes the picture, accepting that some signal combinations may disappear. |
| HDR looks wrong | Check HDR mode, run Adjust HDR, and verify the television is in its normal HDR picture mode. | Compare On When Supported and Always On with the same content; neither is universally best. |
| No surround channels | Check Output Device, HDMI Device Type, amplifier channel count, speaker positions and Audio Format (Priority). | Confirm the amplifier’s own input display and remember that some apps have separate audio controls. |
| 3D audio sounds unnatural | For TV speakers, compare stereo and 3D audio and measure again from the normal seat. For headphones, try the personalized profile and the five presets. | Keep the mode that sounds most accurate to you; 3D processing is optional. |
What “best” means in practice
A reliable PS5 setup is one whose active signal matches the display’s real capability, keeps HDR content calibrated, uses 120 Hz and VRR only where the complete chain supports them, and sends audio in a format the listening equipment can decode. Automatic detection is usually the correct baseline; manual changes are most useful for a specific compatibility problem or a deliberate preference.
You do not need to replace a television, headset, receiver or cable simply because a menu contains advanced options. First inspect the negotiated signal, test a direct connection and use the included HDMI cable. Buy an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K 120 Hz only when the included cable is unavailable or troubleshooting shows that the cable is the weak link.
