Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Sony’s DualSense Edge wireless controller is the PS5’s configurable pro controller. Pair it with a powered-on PS5, update its device software, create a custom profile, and assign that profile to an Fn shortcut. You can then remap buttons, adjust stick and trigger response, change vibration and trigger-effect intensity, and switch layouts during a game.
The important detail is that profiles are saved on the controller. Once configured, a profile can travel with the controller to another PS5 and, through PlayStation Accessories, to a compatible Windows PC or mobile device. The instructions below use the current PS5 menu names and explain the limits that cannot be changed.

What you need before setup
Use the supplied braided USB cable for the first pairing and for any wired play you want to enable. The PS5 must be turned on for initial pairing. A Windows PC can be used for firmware updates and profile editing through the PlayStation Accessories app.
| Item | Requirement or limitation |
|---|---|
| Controller | DualSense Edge wireless controller |
| First pairing | Powered-on PS5 and the included USB cable |
| Wireless use | Pair once, then disconnect the cable after the player indicator lights |
| Rest-mode charging | Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports must be set to anything except Off |
| Firmware update on PS5 | Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller Device Software |
| Firmware and PC profiles | PlayStation Accessories for Windows |
| Stored layouts | Four total profiles, including the default profile; on PC, up to three custom profiles in addition to the default |
Have the game you intend to play installed before testing a layout. A remap changes what the controller sends; it does not override a game’s own control scheme, accessibility settings, or prompts.

Pair and charge the controller with a PS5
- Turn on the PS5. Leave the console at the home screen so it can complete the pairing process.
- Connect the controller. Plug the included USB cable into the DualSense Edge and the PS5.
- Press the PS button. The light bar blinks while pairing. When pairing completes, the player indicator lights.
- Disconnect for wireless play. After the first pairing, you can remove the cable and continue wirelessly.
- Charge in rest mode if needed. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports and choose a setting other than Off. The controller can charge while the console is on or in rest mode.
For a deliberately wired connection, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method and select Use USB Cable. The Edge’s connector housing can lock the included braided cable in place, helping prevent the plug from being pulled out during play.
Update DualSense Edge device software first
Updating before you create profiles gives the controller the current software expected by the PS5 and the Windows configuration app.
Update from the PS5
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Choose Accessories.
- Select DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
- Open DualSense Edge Wireless Controller Device Software.
- Follow the on-screen update instructions and keep the controller connected as directed.
Update from Windows
Install and open PlayStation Accessories on a Windows PC, connect the controller by USB, and use the controller entry in the app to check for device software. Keep the cable attached until the app reports that the process is complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCreate your first custom profile on PS5
- Open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
- Select Custom Profiles.
- Choose Create Custom Profile.
- Enter a name that identifies the game or purpose, such as “Shooter,” “Racing,” or “Left-hand layout.”
- Select the setting you want to customize, make the change, and save it when prompted.
A profile can contain custom button assignments, stick sensitivity and deadzone values, trigger deadzones, vibration intensity, and trigger-effect intensity. You can make a minimal button-only profile or combine several adjustments in one layout.
Profile capacity and the default layout
The controller stores four profiles in total, counting the default profile. That leaves three custom profiles for your own layouts. Keep the default profile unchanged if you want a reliable baseline for troubleshooting. Give each custom profile a distinct name so you can identify it from the shortcut-assignment screen.

- Adjustable trigger lengths Manually set the travel distance of your left and right triggers for an optimal experience with whatever you’re playing. Fast-paced FPS? Set a shorter travel distance to shoot faster on the field. Competitive racer? Set a longer travel distance for precise throttle control on the track.
- Remappable buttons Remap or even deactivate specific button inputs, so you can create a completely personalized control setup that’s ideal for the game at hand.
- Quick-swap control profiles Once you’ve found your ideal control settings, you can save them to unique profiles and swap between them on-the-fly, so your favourite configurations are always ready when you are.
Remap buttons step by step
- Open an existing profile or create one under Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles.
- Select Customize Button Assignments.
- Choose the physical button you want to change.
- Select the function that button should perform.
- Select Apply to commit the assignment.
- Repeat for every button in the layout, then return to the profile screen.
To make a button produce no input, select that button and choose Disable. This is useful when an accidental press is worse than having no command on that control, but check the game first: some titles require a particular button to advance menus or confirm a choice.
Button-assignment rules you cannot bypass
- Fn is fixed. You cannot reassign the Fn button, and another button cannot take over the Fn function.
- Circle and cross must remain assigned. The system requires both of these action buttons to have an assignment.
- L2 and R2 can be swapped. They cannot receive arbitrary extra functions or multiple functions.
- One physical button can have one selected function. If you need a different command, replace the current assignment rather than adding a second command to the same control.
After applying a remap, test it in a safe area of the game. The on-screen prompt may still show the game’s original symbol even though the controller is sending your selected function.

Assign profiles to Fn shortcuts and switch while playing
Shortcuts are the fastest way to change layouts without returning to the PS5 settings screen.
- Open the controller’s Custom Profiles screen.
- Go to the Unassigned Profiles tab.
- Select a profile and assign it to an available action-button shortcut.
- During a game, hold Fn and press the assigned action button: triangle, circle, cross, or square.
Fn plus triangle is the permanent default shortcut. It selects the default profile and cannot be replaced. The circle, cross, and square combinations are the three assignable custom shortcuts. Hold Fn first, then press the action button; pressing the action button alone performs its normal game command.
| Shortcut | Can it be changed? | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Fn + triangle | No | Fixed shortcut for the default profile |
| Fn + circle | Yes | Assign any stored custom profile |
| Fn + cross | Yes | Assign any stored custom profile |
| Fn + square | Yes | Assign any stored custom profile |
Assign shortcuts by purpose rather than by game name if several games use the same control style. For example, one profile can prioritize a rear-button jump, another can use a low trigger deadzone, and a third can restore the unmodified arrangement.

Tune sticks, triggers, vibration and trigger effects
Stick sensitivity curves
The Edge provides six stick sensitivity curves. A curve changes how quickly the output responds as you move the physical stick. Use a lower-response curve when you need finer control around the center and a faster curve when you want the output to reach a larger turn or camera movement sooner. The correct choice depends on the game and your hand movement, so test one change at a time.
Stick deadzones
A stick deadzone is the amount of physical tilt ignored before an input registers. Increasing it can mask minor unwanted movement; decreasing it can make a healthy stick respond to smaller motions. Use the in-menu playtest after changing the value. If the camera still moves when you are not touching the stick, increase the deadzone gradually rather than making a large jump that sacrifices precision.
Trigger deadzones
A trigger deadzone is the amount of L2 or R2 travel ignored before the game receives an input. A smaller active range can make a trigger respond earlier, while a larger ignored range can prevent light touches from registering. Confirm the result in the profile’s test screen and in the game’s own firing, braking or acceleration controls.
Vibration and adaptive trigger effects
Profiles can save vibration intensity and trigger-effect intensity. Lower these values when you want less resistance or distraction; retain the game’s stronger effects when tactile feedback is part of your play style. These settings affect the controller’s feedback, not the game’s underlying difficulty or physics.
Set up and edit profiles on a Windows PC
PlayStation Accessories lets you configure the controller without opening the PS5’s settings. The profile is written to the controller, so it can later be used on another compatible computer or mobile device, subject to supported features.
- Connect the DualSense Edge to the Windows PC with USB and open PlayStation Accessories.
- Select Create Profile, or choose an unassigned profile slot.
- Enter a profile name.
- Assign the profile to an available shortcut.
- Customize button assignments, stick and trigger settings, vibration, or trigger effects.
- Select Apply after each item you change.
- Select Done when the profile is complete.
The same controller-side storage explains why a layout made on Windows can be available when you return to a PS5. Feature support can vary by device, so verify the controls you need after moving between platforms.
Use profiles across consoles and devices
Profiles are stored on the controller rather than only in one PS5 user account. Connect the configured controller to another PS5 and its saved layouts can be used there. This is useful when taking the controller to a friend’s console or moving between a home and a second console.
When moving to a PC or mobile device, connect through the supported method and confirm that the particular game recognizes the controller. A profile can still be present on the controller even when a device or game does not support every DualSense Edge feature, such as adaptive trigger effects.

The game receives the wrong command
- Reopen the profile and verify the physical-button-to-function mapping.
- Check the game’s own controller settings for a conflicting layout or an additional remap.
- Test the controller in another game or in the profile playtest to determine whether the issue is profile-specific or game-specific.
- Confirm that you applied the change and that the intended profile is selected with its Fn shortcut.
The controller will not pair
- Turn on the PS5 and reconnect the supplied USB cable.
- Press the PS button and wait for the player indicator.
- If the controller remains unresponsive, turn off the PS5.
- Press the small reset button on the controller with a pin.
- Reconnect the controller with the supplied USB cable and press PS again.
Resetting does not reconfigure pairing or profile settings, so you should not need to rebuild your saved layouts afterward. If the controller still misbehaves after a reset, use PlayStation Repairs for the next diagnostic step.

A stick module fails
PlayStation lists a replacement stick module sold separately and says the left and right modules are interchangeable. Replace a failed module rather than compensating indefinitely with an extreme deadzone, which can reduce usable precision.

The controller charges only when the PS5 is awake
Check Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode > Supply Power to USB Ports. A value of Off prevents rest-mode USB charging; choose an available power-supply option instead.
Build practical layouts without losing the default controls
Start with one change
Create a profile, change only the control that is causing a problem, and test it. This isolates whether the remap helps. Once it feels correct, add sensitivity or deadzone changes in small increments.
Keep a recovery shortcut
Leave Fn plus triangle assigned to the default profile and use one custom shortcut for a neutral layout. If a game behaves unexpectedly, hold Fn and triangle to return to the unchanged controls immediately.
Name profiles for the decision they support
Names such as “Low trigger,” “Rear jump,” or “Accessibility” are easier to recognize during play than generic names such as “Profile 1.” A clear name also helps when editing the same controller on Windows.
Verify prompts and required buttons
Because the game may continue displaying its original button prompts, explain the remap to anyone sharing the controller. Keep circle and cross assigned, and avoid disabling a button that the game requires for menus unless you have another accessible route.
Recommended setup sequence
- Pair the Edge with the powered-on PS5 using the included cable.
- Enable rest-mode USB power if you want charging while the console sleeps.
- Update the controller device software from PS5 or Windows.
- Create a named custom profile.
- Remap buttons and select Apply.
- Adjust stick curves, deadzones, vibration, or trigger effects only after the basic remap works.
- Test the profile in the game and check for game-level conflicts.
- Assign the profile to Fn plus circle, cross, or square.
- Keep Fn plus triangle available for the default profile.
Once this sequence is complete, the controller can switch between its stored layouts in seconds and carry those layouts to another compatible PS5 or device.
