The practical choice is between running the dedicated server on your own Windows or Linux machine and renting managed DayZ hosting. Self-hosting gives you direct control over files, configuration and mods, but you must install updates, open the right network paths and keep the host online. Managed hosting puts the machine and much of the administration behind a web panel.
For a small group, start with an unmodded, password-protected server. Set a game-entry password and a separate administrator password, confirm that friends can reach the configured listening and query ports, and only then add whitelist rules or mods.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting first
Your hosting decision determines who maintains the operating system, game files and network connection.
| Factor | Self-hosted dedicated server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Uses a computer and internet connection you already have; any hardware or electricity cost is yours. | No server machine purchase, but you pay a recurring hosting charge. Current plan prices and limits vary by provider, region and slot count. |
| Setup work | Install SteamCMD and the DayZ server, create a configuration, launch it and handle firewall/router access. | Create a server in the provider panel and use its settings and connection tools. |
| Control | Direct access to server files, startup parameters, logs and mod installation. | Convenient controls, with file and operating-system access limited by the provider. |
| Availability | The server is offline when the host machine or its connection is offline. | Designed to remain online without leaving a home computer running. |
| Network burden | You may need host-firewall rules, router configuration and a reachable external address. | The provider handles the server’s network; you still share the correct address and query port with friends. |
Self-hosting suits someone comfortable maintaining a Linux or Windows machine. Managed hosting is the simpler route if nobody in the group wants to administer a server or router.

Hardware and software requirements
Bohemia Interactive’s published server requirements list Windows 10 or later and Linux, 6 GB of RAM and 2.5 GB of storage. The same page recommends an SSD for the installation and logs. Those are baseline figures, not a performance guarantee: the page does not size hardware by player count, mods or other applications running on the machine.
| Requirement | Published baseline or guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or greater, or Linux | The Linux command sequence below is for Linux only. Windows requires the Windows server files and its own service or startup process. |
| Memory | 6 GB RAM | Leave headroom for the operating system, logs and any mods; the source does not promise a player capacity at this amount. |
| Storage | 2.5 GB | This is the listed baseline for server files. Keep additional free space for updates, logs, profiles and backups. |
| Drive type | SSD recommended for installation and logs | An SSD is recommended, not a stated mandatory specification or a guarantee of a particular tick rate. |
Use a stable wired connection when possible. Before inviting friends, make sure the machine can stay powered on for the entire play session and that sleep mode will not suspend the server.

Bohemia Interactive’s Linux hosting guide uses SteamCMD, installs the stable DayZ server application (App ID 223350), and launches the server as a normal user. Do not run the DayZ server as root.
1. Create a dedicated, non-root account and directory
Sign in with an account that can install packages, then create a separate user for the server and an installation directory. The exact account and path are your choice; keeping server files outside a personal home directory makes permissions and backups easier.
- Install the distribution-specific prerequisites listed in Bohemia Interactive’s current Linux guide.
- Create a directory such as
/srv/dayzand give the DayZ service account ownership. - Run SteamCMD and the server executable as that service account, not as root.
2. Install or update the stable server with SteamCMD
Use SteamCMD to select an installation directory and update App ID 223350. A typical command pattern is:

3. Create a server configuration
The configuration filename is arbitrary. The important point is that the launch command must select it with -config; if no configuration is supplied, mandatory settings can prevent the server from launching. Start with a small, unmodded configuration containing a name, both passwords and a mission template.
hostname = "Friends' Chernarus");
password = "choose-a-game-password";
passwordAdmin = "choose-a-separate-admin-password";
maxPlayers = 8;
steamQueryPort = 2305;
class Missions
{
class DayZ
{
template = "dayzOffline.chernarusplus";
};
};
The snippet illustrates the settings to provide; use the syntax and field names in the current official server-config reference when creating your file. Do not reuse the example passwords. Set a private name that your friends can recognize and choose a player limit appropriate to your group rather than copying an example value blindly.
4. Understand the two passwords
| Setting | Purpose | Who should receive it |
|---|---|---|
password |
Controls entry to the game server. | Give it to the friends you want to admit. |
passwordAdmin |
Separate administrator credential for server administration. | Keep it with the trusted operator; do not post it in the group chat used for joining. |
The configuration also supports whitelist and ban-list controls. A password is usually enough for a small first test; add a whitelist when you need admission tied to named player identities rather than a shared secret.
5. Launch the server with explicit paths and ports
The launch parameters select the configuration, listening port, profile directory and logging. The official Linux example also specifies a BattlEye path and enables logs. Adapt the paths to your installation:

./DayZServer_x64 -config=/srv/dayz/serverDZ.cfg -port=2302 -profiles=/srv/dayz/profiles -dologs -BEpath=/srv/dayz/battleye
This is a launch pattern, not a universal path. Confirm the executable name and supported switches in the server files installed by your current build. Keep the -port value synchronized with the network rules and with the port you tell players. The configuration’s query-port setting must also match the port used for server discovery.
6. Verify a clean, unmodded start
- Start the process in a terminal or service session and watch the log output for configuration or permission errors.
- Confirm that the profile and log directories are being written by the non-root service account.
- Search for the server from another machine on the same network, or use a direct connection method with the host’s address and configured port.
- Join with a test account before adding any mods. A successful unmodded connection isolates networking and password problems from mod problems.
Make the server reachable to friends
A server that works on the host’s local network is not automatically reachable from the internet. Friends outside your home network need the actual external address and ports to be reachable.
Use consistent listening and query ports
Bohemia Interactive’s example uses listening port 2302 and query port 2305. These are examples, not mandatory universal values. If you choose different ports, use those values consistently in the configuration, launch command, firewall rules, router settings and the connection details sent to friends.
Permit the process through the host firewall
Create inbound rules for the actual server and query traffic required by your configuration. Apply the narrowest rule that works, and restrict administrative interfaces from the public internet. After changing a rule, restart or reload the firewall if your operating system requires it, then test from a different network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConfigure the router only when necessary
If the server is behind a home router and friends are connecting from outside, forward the configured server ports to the host machine’s local address. The official material does not establish one universal forwarding list for every DayZ configuration, so do not copy a long list from an unofficial guide without checking it against your chosen ports and current server documentation.

Give friends a usable connection path
Tell players the server’s external address, the listening port when a direct-connect form asks for it, and the game password. For discovery, the provider connection instructions describe adding a PC server to Steam favorites by IP address and query port. If the server does not appear in the browser, direct connection can help distinguish a listing problem from a reachability problem.
Configure a private play space
Beyond passwords, the dedicated-server configuration exposes controls for the experience your group wants.

| Control | What it changes | Practical starting decision |
|---|---|---|
| Server name and description | How friends identify the server and understand its rules. | Use a recognizable group name and state whether the server is vanilla or modded. |
| Maximum players | Caps simultaneous players. | Set it for your group; the example value in documentation is not a recommendation for every host. |
| Mission template | Selects the world and mission setup. | Use a supported vanilla template first, then change it deliberately. |
| Time progression | Controls in-game time behavior. | Choose a schedule that fits your sessions; document unusual settings so players are not surprised. |
| Whitelist and ban lists | Restricts named players or blocks unwanted identities. | Begin with a password, then add a whitelist for a tightly controlled group. |
| Logs and profile directory | Stores diagnostics and server profile data. | Enable logs and place profiles on persistent storage with enough free space. |
| Query port | Allows server discovery tools to query the server. | Keep it aligned with firewall/router rules and the port used in favorites. |
Add mods only after the base server works
The official Linux guide includes a modded-server path that downloads Workshop content and starts the server with a -mod parameter. Mods add another set of failure points: downloads, server keys, load order, updates and client compatibility.
- Record the working unmodded configuration and back up the profiles and configuration file.
- Install one mod or a small, known-compatible set through the documented Workshop process.
- Place the required key files where the server expects them and confirm the server log reports a successful load.
- Give friends the exact mod list and versions. Clients must have matching requirements to join.
- Test one player at a time, then expand the group.
The provider connection guidance says the DayZ launcher can prompt players to set up required mods or downloadable content when they join a server that uses them. That convenience does not remove the need to keep the server’s mod versions and keys consistent.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operate and maintain the server safely
Stop gracefully
Do not kill the process during active play unless there is no alternative. The configuration documentation recommends a graceful shutdown to avoid negative effects on player characters and storage saves. Announce maintenance, allow players to log out, then use the server’s normal stop procedure or service manager.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Update deliberately
- Announce an update window to the group.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Back up the configuration, profiles, logs you need and persistent storage.
- Run the SteamCMD update for App ID
223350. - Start the server and check logs before inviting players back.
Protect credentials and files
- Use different, long values for the game password and administrator password.
- Do not place the administrator password in a public server description or startup script that other users can read.
- Limit operating-system permissions on the server directory.
- Keep backups off the live server so a damaged installation does not destroy every copy.
- Review logs for repeated failed connections or unexpected administrative activity.
Use managed hosting instead
A managed provider removes the need to keep a home machine online and usually supplies a web interface for settings. The current DayZ offering from Nitrado lists PC hosting, password-based private access, web-interface configuration and PC mod installation. Plan prices, player slots, runtime, regions and platform availability can change, so check the provider’s current product page before paying.
DayZ’s official private-console FAQ, published in 2019, identified Nitrado as its console hosting partner and described controls such as server name, password, time, player cap, camera mode, logs and messages. That page is historical and concerns private console servers; it should not be treated as a current inventory of PC or console plans.
Typical managed-hosting setup
- Create a DayZ PC server in the provider’s current control panel and select the region and slot plan that fit your group.
- Set the server name, game password, player cap and time options in the web interface.
- Install only the mods supported by the provider, then record the required client list.
- Start the server and copy its IP address and query port.
- Add that address and query port to Steam favorites, or use the provider’s documented direct-connect method.
- Give friends the game password, not any panel or administrator credential.
Managed hosting does not eliminate game-side troubleshooting, but it shifts machine maintenance, storage and much of the network administration to the provider.
Troubleshoot in a fixed order
| Symptom | Checks | Likely correction |
|---|---|---|
| Server process exits immediately | Read the launch output; verify -config points to an existing file, mandatory settings are present, paths are readable and the process is not running as root. |
Correct the path or configuration syntax, fix ownership and relaunch with the current executable switches. |
| Server works locally but friends cannot connect | Confirm the process is running, the external address is correct, the host firewall permits the configured ports and the router forwards them to the right local machine. | Align firewall/router rules with the actual -port and query-port values, then test from a separate network. |
| Server is not listed | Check the query-port setting, provider or Steam-favorites entry, server uptime and whether the address is external rather than a private LAN address. | Re-enter the IP and query port, correct the query rule and use direct connection to isolate listing from reachability. |
| Password is rejected | Distinguish the game-entry password from passwordAdmin; check capitalization and accidental spaces. |
Use the game password for joining and reserve the admin password for administration. |
| Friends are kicked from a modded server | Compare each client’s mod list and versions with the server, and inspect logs for missing keys or load errors. | Install the required client mods, correct key files and load order, or temporarily return to the unmodded configuration. |
| Characters or saves appear damaged after a crash | Check whether the process was forcibly terminated and inspect the latest backups and logs. | Restore a known-good backup if necessary and adopt graceful shutdowns for future maintenance. |
Self-hosting versus renting: a practical decision
- Choose self-hosting when you already have a suitable always-on computer, want complete control over files and mods, and are willing to configure networking and perform updates.
- Choose managed hosting when the group wants a 24/7 endpoint, nobody wants to maintain a host machine, or router configuration is a barrier.
- Start with vanilla either way. Establish a password-protected connection first; mods should be a second phase, not part of the initial diagnosis.
The minimum figures from Bohemia Interactive are useful for checking whether a machine is in the right general class, but they do not predict performance for a particular player count or mod load. Keep spare memory and storage, monitor logs, and adjust the player cap to what the host can sustain.
