To use a portable monitor as a second screen, connect it through a video path supported by your computer, monitor, and cable, then choose Extend on Windows or arrange it in macOS System Settings > Displays. A USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video: the computer port, monitor input, and cable must support the same video method.
Before connecting: check that your devices can send video
Look up the exact laptop and portable-monitor specifications before choosing a cable or adapter. USB-C describes the connector, not necessarily its video capability. For a native USB-C connection, the computer port, monitor, and cable must support DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode). As Microsoft puts it, “The Alternate Mode feature must be supported on the PC’s hardware and software, and the connected device or dongle.” [Microsoft’s USB-C guidance]

USB-C Alternate Mode is negotiated automatically when all parts support it; no Windows or macOS setting can add video capability to a port that lacks it. A USB-C-to-HDMI adapter is useful only when the computer has a video output and the adapter supports the required connection. Follow the monitor maker’s guidance on which cable to use; ASUS, for example, recommends the cable supplied with its portable monitor. [ASUS portable-monitor guidance]

Video and power are separate needs. A portable monitor may require its own power connection even when a video cable is attached. Set up the monitor in Windows 11 or Windows 10
- Check the computer’s video output, the monitor’s input, and the cable. For USB-C video, verify DP Alt Mode support at both ends and in the cable.
- Connect the monitor using the supplied or otherwise compatible video cable. Use a suitable adapter if the computer’s video output and monitor input differ.
- Connect external power to the monitor if its requirements or the available USB power make it necessary.
- Press Windows+P and select Extend. This gives you separate desktop space instead of showing the same image on both screens.
- Open Settings > System > Display. Select Identify if available, then drag the display rectangles to match the monitors’ physical positions. Choose a resolution supported by the display from the available options.

Set up the monitor in macOS
- Connect the monitor to power if needed, then connect its video cable to a Mac video port. If the cable does not match the port, use an appropriate adapter.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. A correctly powered and connected display should be detected automatically.
- Arrange the display positions so the pointer moves naturally between screens. Adjust resolution or refresh rate where those controls are available.
- If a setting is not available in macOS, check the portable monitor’s built-in controls and the documentation for your exact Mac model.
Apple’s display-count support depends on the Mac model, resolution, and refresh rate, so check your model before assuming it can run a particular number of external screens. [Apple’s Mac display connection guide]

Special case: M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro
Apple documents a dual-external-display setup for M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models that requires the laptop lid to be closed and an external keyboard and mouse or trackpad. The documented minimum is macOS Sonoma 14.3 for MacBook Air and macOS Sonoma 14.6 for MacBook Pro. These requirements apply to that specific M3 setup, not to every Mac. Troubleshoot a blank or undetected portable monitor
No picture over USB-C
- Confirm that the actual computer port supports DP Alt Mode; the USB-C shape alone is not proof.
- Check that the monitor accepts DP Alt Mode and that the cable supports it.
- Try a direct connection with the monitor’s supplied cable before adding a hub or adapter.
- Connect the monitor to external power if needed.
The monitor powers on but says “No signal” or stays blank
- Check that the monitor is set to the input used by the cable.
- Reseat both ends of the cable and confirm the computer is sending video through that port.
- Try another supported cable or port, and, if possible, test the monitor with another system to help isolate the problem.

The monitor uses DisplayLink
Some portable monitors use USB 3.0 DisplayLink rather than native DP Alt Mode. ASUS says its DisplayLink route uses the USB cable and requires installing the monitor driver. Follow the current instructions for the specific monitor; a DisplayLink driver is not a general requirement for ordinary DP Alt Mode connections. [ASUS portable-monitor guidance]
Windows duplicates the desktop instead of extending it
Press Windows+P, choose Extend, then arrange the screens in Settings > System > Display. [Microsoft’s Windows external-monitor troubleshooting]

Mac does not detect the display or offers limited resolution or refresh rate
Recheck the video connection and adapter compatibility, then consult Apple’s guidance for a dark screen or limited resolution and the portable monitor’s own controls. Available display options depend on the Mac and display combination. [Apple’s Mac display connection guide]
A second external screen does not work

What to verify before buying a cable or monitor
- For USB-C video, confirm DP Alt Mode support for the laptop port, monitor input, and cable.
- For HDMI or another connector, confirm the computer’s supported video output and the adapter’s compatibility with the monitor.
- Check whether the monitor needs separate power or draws more power than the laptop can provide in your situation.
- Check the exact Mac or Windows computer’s external-display limits and the resolution and refresh rate supported in the intended setup.
- If the monitor specifies DisplayLink, confirm its driver requirements rather than assuming it behaves like a native USB-C video display.
