Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo block phone distractions after work with a Pixel Watch, first pair the watch with a compatible Android phone in the Google Pixel Watch app. Then open Settings > Notifications > App notifications and turn off watch alerts for the apps you do not want to see. For a faster, broader pause, use a notification mode from the watch’s Quick Settings. If you also want to stop opening those apps on the phone, add Android Digital Wellbeing Focus mode.
The exact modes and menu labels vary by Pixel Watch generation and software. The controls below separate watch-only notification filtering from phone-side app blocking, so you can choose the least disruptive setup that still protects your evening.

What this setup can block
A Pixel Watch can keep selected phone-app notifications from appearing on the watch while leaving other alerts available. That is useful when you want calls, calendar reminders or messages from chosen people but do not want social, shopping, news or work-app interruptions on your wrist.
Quick Settings modes provide a broader, temporary pause. Depending on your watch, Do Not Disturb, Bedtime or Cinema/Theater mode can silence most or all watch notifications, with different exceptions. These modes affect what reaches the watch; they do not automatically prevent you from opening the distracting app on your phone.

Android’s Digital Wellbeing Focus mode is the phone-side companion. When it is active, selected apps are paused and their notifications are withheld on the phone. It can be enabled manually or scheduled, but it is a Pixel-phone setting rather than a Pixel Watch setting.
Check compatibility and prepare both devices
Google’s Pixel Watch setup guide lists the basic requirements: the watch and its included charging cable, a Google Account, a compatible Android phone running current software, internet access and the latest Google Pixel Watch app.
Before you start
- Charge the watch and phone so setup is not interrupted.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
- Allow location permission when the Pixel Watch app requests it; the app uses this permission during device setup and connection.
- Install or update the Google Pixel Watch app before pairing.
- Turn on the watch by holding its crown for about three seconds.
- Keep the watch close to the phone and connect both devices to the internet.
The watch must have a supported connection for notifications to arrive later. Depending on the model and your plan, that connection may be Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or LTE.

What you do not need to buy
If you already own a compatible Pixel Watch, the documented setup does not require a paid app, subscription, repair part, consumable or third-party accessory. Google says the charging cable is included with the watch purchase, so do not treat a separate cable as a setup requirement. The phone app and Focus mode are software controls; their availability depends on compatibility and software rather than an extra purchase.
Pair the Pixel Watch with your Android phone
- Place the powered-on watch beside the phone with Bluetooth enabled.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app and begin its setup flow.
- Follow the on-screen pairing and account instructions. Accept the requested permissions, including location, so the app can complete setup.
- Wait for the app to finish connecting and syncing the watch.
- Confirm that the app shows Connected. If it does not, keep the devices close, verify Bluetooth and internet access, and repeat the in-app prompts.
Pairing is the foundation for notification controls. If the watch is not connected in the app, changing an app’s alert preference will not reliably deliver or suppress notifications.
Allow the first sync to finish
Do not start testing notification rules while the app is still pairing or downloading updates. A partially completed setup can make a toggle appear to save while the watch is not yet receiving the phone’s notification configuration. Leave both devices nearby until the app reports a completed connection, then send a harmless test alert from an app you plan to keep enabled.
Turn off distracting apps while keeping useful alerts
Per-app control is the most precise way to block phone distractions after work. It suppresses selected app notifications on the watch without forcing a complete silence period.

Use the Pixel Watch app
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app on the paired phone.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Choose App notifications.
- Select the phone or watch app whose alerts you want to control.
- Turn that app’s watch notifications on or off.
Repeat the last two steps for each distracting app. Leave alerts enabled for the apps you still want during personal time, such as a family-messaging app, an alarm or a time-sensitive security service.
This setting controls notification delivery to the watch. Turning an app off here does not uninstall it, pause it on the phone or prevent the phone from showing its own notifications.
Build a practical after-work list
- Block by default: social feeds, retail alerts, breaking-news apps, games and work chat that does not require an evening response.
- Keep available: calls from important contacts, calendar alarms, navigation, home-security alerts or two-factor authentication messages you genuinely need.
- Review occasionally: apps often add new notification categories after an update, so check the list when an unwanted alert returns.
Start with a short list instead of disabling every app. A selective list is easier to audit and less likely to hide an alert you later discover you needed. If an alert has an unfamiliar icon, identify the sending app on the phone before changing several toggles at once.
Use a Quick Settings mode for a broad pause
When you want a one-tap change rather than editing individual apps, swipe down on the watch face to open Quick Settings and tap an available notification mode. Availability and behavior differ by watch generation and software, so use the mode labels that actually appear on your watch.

| Mode | Scope | Exceptions or behavior | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do Not Disturb | Broadly turns off notifications and silences incoming calls on supported watches. | Where the control is available, press and hold it to customize exceptions such as priority callers, repeat callers, alarms and media sounds. | A quick evening silence period when you still need selected exceptions. |
| Bedtime | Disables notifications while the watch is in Bedtime mode. | Google’s guidance allows alarms, priority callers and repeat callers through; it is therefore not necessarily a total blackout. | Overnight or a predictable wind-down period when alarms must remain reliable. |
| Cinema/Theater | Suppresses notifications and incoming calls and temporarily turns off the screen. | It is intended as a temporary interruption block; the label may appear as Cinema or Theater depending on the software. | A meeting, film or short period when you do not want the display waking. |
Google’s notification guidance marks Do Not Disturb as available only for Pixel Watch 2 and 3 paired with Pixel phones in the cited instructions. Do not assume that every generation, phone brand or software version has the same option. Check your own Quick Settings panel before planning around a mode.
Turn on a mode after work
- Wake the watch and swipe down from the watch face.
- Find the notification mode icon that is present on your device.
- Tap it to activate the mode.
- If the mode offers more settings, press and hold its icon and review exceptions before leaving it enabled.
- Turn the mode off from the same Quick Settings panel when you want normal alerts again.
Because these modes silence broadly, they are less suitable than per-app settings when you need a particular class of alert, such as delivery or family messages, to remain visible.
Understand exceptions before relying on silence
A mode can be active while an alarm or an allowed caller still gets through. That is expected behavior, not a failed app filter. Review priority and repeat-caller settings when you need a true interruption break, and verify that alarms remain allowed before using Bedtime overnight. Cinema/Theater mode is the better fit when the screen itself waking is the problem, but it is still a temporary mode rather than a phone-app block.

Pause the distracting apps on the phone with Focus mode
If the real problem is opening a phone app—not merely seeing its notification—use Focus mode on a Pixel phone. Google explains the feature in its Digital Wellbeing guidance.

- Open Settings on the Pixel phone.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing.
- Tap Focus mode.
- Select the apps you want to pause.
- Tap the control to turn Focus mode on, or create a schedule for the hours you normally spend off work.
While Focus mode is on, paused apps cannot be used and their notifications are withheld. Google also provides temporary breaks, which let you use a paused app for a limited period without removing it from the Focus mode list.
Focus mode changes the phone experience; it is separate from the Pixel Watch app’s per-app notification list. For a stronger boundary, use both: pause the most tempting apps on the phone and disable their watch notifications. For a lighter boundary, change only the watch notification list and leave phone access unchanged.
Schedule the phone boundary, not the watch list
Focus mode is the documented option for a recurring schedule. Set its start and end around your normal workday, then adjust the selected-app list as your routine changes. The Pixel Watch app’s per-app notification switches are presented as a manual list; do not assume they will automatically turn on and off at the same hours. A practical arrangement is to keep the watch list quiet all evening and let Focus mode enforce the stronger phone restriction only during the hours you need it.
Choose the right combination for your evening
| Goal | Recommended control | What changes | Scheduling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hide a few distracting alerts from your wrist | Pixel Watch app > Settings > Notifications > App notifications | Selected app notifications stop reaching the watch; phone apps remain usable. | Manual list; no automatic schedule is documented for this watch setting. |
| Silence nearly everything on the watch for a short period | Quick Settings notification mode | Broad watch silence, with mode-specific exceptions. | Usually manual from the watch; availability depends on generation and software. |
| Stop yourself opening selected apps | Phone Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode | Chosen phone apps are paused and their notifications withheld. | Manual activation or a schedule, with temporary breaks. |
| Protect sleep while retaining alarms | Bedtime mode, if present | Notifications are disabled except the exceptions described by Google. | Automatic Bedtime entry and exit are specifically described for Pixel Watch 4; check your model. |
Think of the controls as three different boundaries: the app list filters what reaches your wrist, a Quick Settings mode creates a broad watch pause, and Focus mode limits access on the phone itself. Combining all three can be unnecessarily strict if you only need fewer wrist vibrations, while using only the watch list will not stop a habit of opening an app directly on the phone.

The title does not identify a watch generation, and Google does not present every notification feature as universal. A control may be absent, renamed or located differently after a watch or phone update.
- Do Not Disturb is identified in Google’s notification instructions for Pixel Watch 2 and 3 with Pixel phones; do not promise it on another combination.
- Automatic Bedtime entry and exit are specifically described for Pixel Watch 4.
- Cinema mode may be labeled Theater mode in troubleshooting or on a particular software build.
- The exact Quick Settings icons and exception controls can change with the watch’s software.
If a step does not match your screen, open Quick Settings and the Pixel Watch app’s Notifications area and use the controls available there rather than forcing an identical path. A missing icon does not necessarily indicate a fault; it may reflect the watch generation, the paired phone or the installed software.

Troubleshoot notifications that still appear
Use Google’s notification troubleshooting guidance when an alert is missing or an unwanted alert continues.
If an unwanted alert still reaches the watch
- Return to the Pixel Watch app and open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Confirm that the specific app is turned off for watch notifications. Check similarly named apps if the alert’s source is unclear.
- Look at the watch’s Quick Settings and verify that the mode you intended to use is active; a per-app setting and a broad mode are separate controls.
- Check the phone’s app notification settings if the app has multiple notification categories or companion apps.
Also check whether the alert is actually a call, alarm or another exception rather than an ordinary app notification. Broad modes can intentionally allow priority or repeat callers, and Bedtime can allow alarms. If the phone itself still displays the alert, that is normal when you changed only the watch setting.
Recommended Free Tools
If an expected alert is missing
- Check whether Bedtime, Do Not Disturb or Theater/Cinema mode is active. These modes can disable notifications, subject to their exceptions.
- Confirm that the phone is turned on.
- In the Pixel Watch app, verify that the watch is connected.
- Make sure the watch has a supported Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection, or active LTE service where applicable.
- Recheck the app’s watch-notification toggle and any exceptions configured for the active mode.
A watch can be correctly configured and still miss an alert when the paired phone is off or the watch has no supported connection. Restore the connection first, then retest with a low-stakes notification. If the watch reconnects but alerts remain inconsistent, revisit both the app-specific toggle and the active mode instead of changing only one.

- At the end of the workday, open the Pixel Watch app and confirm that work-chat and other nonurgent apps are disabled under App notifications.
- If you need a complete wrist pause, swipe down on the watch and enable the available broad mode, checking exceptions before you leave it on.
- On evenings when you are tempted to open certain apps, start the scheduled or manual Focus mode on the phone.
- Keep alarms and genuinely important callers in the exception set rather than disabling every alert indiscriminately.
- When personal time ends, turn off the watch mode and Focus mode, or let the Focus schedule handle the transition.
This layered approach lets the watch act as a selective filter, a broad silence switch or a companion to phone-level app blocking, without assuming that one mode behaves identically on every Pixel Watch.
What to check before relying on it
- The watch shows Connected in the Google Pixel Watch app.
- The phone has Bluetooth enabled and the devices have internet access when setup or synchronization requires it.
- Distracting apps are disabled under Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- The active Quick Settings mode has the exceptions you actually want.
- Focus mode includes only the phone apps you intend to pause.
- The phone is on and the watch has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or LTE connectivity for delivery.
- Your watch generation supports the mode you selected.
Frequently asked questions
Can I block an app on the watch without blocking it on my phone?
Yes. Turn that app’s watch notification off in the Google Pixel Watch app under Settings > Notifications > App notifications. The app remains installed and usable on the phone, and the phone can still show its own alerts.
Does Do Not Disturb stop every alert?
It broadly turns off notifications and silences incoming calls on supported watches, but its exceptions can allow priority callers, repeat callers, alarms or media sounds. Press and hold the control when available to review those choices. Availability is not universal across generations and phones.
Will Bedtime block my alarm?
Google’s guidance describes Bedtime as disabling notifications while allowing alarms, priority callers and repeat callers. Check your watch’s available settings, but do not treat Bedtime as a guaranteed total blackout.

Can Focus mode be scheduled?
Yes. On a Pixel phone, choose the apps in Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode, then turn it on manually or create a schedule. Paused apps cannot be used and their notifications are withheld while the mode is active; temporary breaks are available.
Why are notifications missing after I changed the settings?
Check whether Bedtime, Do Not Disturb or Theater/Cinema mode is active, then confirm that the phone is on, the Pixel Watch app says Connected, and the watch has Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or LTE service as applicable. Recheck the app toggle and mode exceptions after restoring the connection.
Do I need a particular Pixel Watch generation?
You need a compatible Android phone and a watch with the controls you intend to use. Google specifically identifies Do Not Disturb in the cited instructions for Pixel Watch 2 and 3 with Pixel phones, and automatic Bedtime entry and exit for Pixel Watch 4. Check your own Quick Settings and software because labels and availability can differ.
