To set up a Pixel Watch 4, use the Google Pixel Watch app on a compatible Android phone, keep Bluetooth and internet access enabled, and confirm that the pairing code on the watch matches the code in the app. Pixel Watch 4 supports most phones running Android 11.0 or newer; you also need a Google Account. LTE activation is optional and is not required to pair the watch.
The complete process normally takes place in the app: prepare both devices, turn on the watch, select it when the app finds it, verify the code, sign in, choose your preferences, and wait for the app to show Connected.

Check compatibility before you start
Pixel Watch 4 works with most phones running Android 11.0 or newer. The model-specific Android 11.0 requirement is the one to use for Pixel Watch 4, even though a general Pixel Watch setup page may describe an older Android requirement for other models. The phone also needs a Google Account, the Google Pixel Watch app, and an internet connection during setup.
Compatibility checklist
- Phone: Most Android phones with Android 11.0 or later.
- Account: A Google Account that you can sign in to during setup.
- App: The current Google Pixel Watch app installed on the phone.
- Wireless connection: Bluetooth enabled on the phone, with the watch kept nearby.
- Internet: The phone connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data so the app can verify the account and download software.
Pixel Watch 4 is sold in 41 mm and 45 mm sizes. The setup route is through the same phone app; when the app displays nearby watches, select the model that matches the watch you have. The size does not change the pairing process.

Prepare the phone and watch
Preparation prevents most pairing interruptions. Complete these checks before opening the pairing screen.
Charge both devices
Give the phone and watch enough charge to remain on while the app checks for updates and completes account setup. Pixel Watch 4 includes a USB-C Quick Charge Dock. Google specifies a compatible USB-C power adapter with a minimum output of 7.5 W; the adapter itself is not included. You do not need to buy another adapter if you already have a suitable one. Connect the dock and watch to power if an update begins and the battery is getting low.
Update the required software
- Update the Google Pixel Watch app from the phone’s app store.
- Install available Android system updates on the phone.
- If the watch has already been started, allow any available watch firmware update to finish before retrying setup.
Updates can add a delay to first-time setup, so keep both devices close to one another and connected to power when practical. Do not interrupt an update simply because the watch appears to pause; allow the app to finish its current step.
Turn on the permissions and radios
- Turn on Bluetooth in the phone’s settings.
- Allow the Pixel Watch app to use Nearby devices. Android may show this permission with slightly different wording by version.
- Allow the app’s Location permission when requested. The app uses this permission during device discovery.
- Make sure Airplane mode is off on both devices.
If you previously denied one of these permissions, open the phone’s app-permission settings and enable it before trying again. Permission names can vary slightly between Android versions, but the relevant controls are the app’s nearby-device and location access.
Attach the band and power on
Attach and adjust the band before wearing the watch. To turn on Pixel Watch 4, hold the crown for about three seconds. Release it when the watch begins starting up. Wait for the normal startup screen before asking the phone to discover it.
Pair Pixel Watch 4 with the phone
Keep the watch next to the phone throughout pairing. Do not try to complete the process from the phone’s Bluetooth settings alone; start it from the Google Pixel Watch app so the account, software, and watch settings are configured together.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app. If a fast-pair prompt appears while the powered-on watch is nearby, select it. If no prompt appears, open the app manually and choose the option to start setting up a watch.
- Select the watch. When the app lists nearby devices, tap the Pixel Watch 4 that matches your watch. If more than one watch is nearby, check the identifying information on the watch before continuing.
- Compare the pairing codes. A code appears on the phone and on the watch. Read both screens carefully. Tap Pair only when the codes match. Google describes the expected state this way: “A matching pairing code shows on both the app and watch.”
- Wait for the Bluetooth connection. Pairing can take a few minutes. Keep Bluetooth on and do not move the watch out of range while the app is working.
- Sign in to your Google Account. Follow the verification and terms prompts in the app. Use the account you want associated with the watch’s apps, settings, and services.
- Confirm the purchase country if asked. The app may request the country where the watch was purchased for warranty information. Select the applicable country rather than your travel destination.
- Choose whether to restore a backup. Select a previous backup if you are replacing a watch and want to recover supported settings and app data. Choose not to restore if you want a fresh configuration.
- Set wrist and crown orientation. Tell the app which wrist you will wear the watch on and which side the crown is located. These choices affect the display orientation and controls.
- Complete the remaining prompts. Select Start using your watch when the app offers it. Google says the watch updates automatically after this choice, so leave it near the phone and connected as the update runs.
Setup is complete when the app identifies the watch as Connected. The watch may continue installing updates or synchronizing apps after that status appears. Avoid moving it away from the phone until those activities finish.

What to do if the pairing code does not match
Do not approve a mismatched code. A mismatch means the phone and watch are not confirming the same pairing session. Cancel the attempt, restart the watch, and begin pairing again from the Pixel Watch app. To restart the watch, hold the crown for about three seconds, scroll to Restart, and select it. Wait until the watch has fully started before retrying.

If the same mismatch occurs repeatedly, move other Bluetooth devices away temporarily, keep the phone unlocked during discovery, and repeat the permission and airplane-mode checks in the troubleshooting sections below. Select only the watch that is physically in front of you if several nearby devices appear.
Finish setup without activating LTE
A Pixel Watch 4 can be paired and used with the phone without cellular service. LTE activation is an optional step after the basic phone pairing has succeeded. You can skip carrier setup during first-time configuration and return to it later in the Pixel Watch app.
Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and LTE models
| Consideration | Wi-Fi/Bluetooth setup | LTE setup |
|---|---|---|
| Phone pairing | Required through the Google Pixel Watch app | Required before cellular activation |
| Use away from the phone | Relies mainly on a nearby phone or available Wi-Fi for connected features | Can use a cellular network when the watch is away from the phone, subject to service support |
| Carrier plan | Not required for pairing | Requires a compatible carrier and an eligible plan |
| Availability | Depends on the watch’s wireless hardware and normal app support | Depends on the LTE model, country, carrier compatibility, and current eligibility |
Activate LTE after pairing
- Finish the normal watch-to-phone setup first.
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app and choose the cellular or mobile-network setup option shown for your watch.
- Follow the carrier-specific instructions displayed for your country and plan.
- Confirm that the carrier supports the exact Pixel Watch 4 LTE model and the phone number or account you intend to use.
- Wait for activation to complete before testing calls, messages, or mobile data away from the phone.
Carrier instructions differ by region, and a carrier that supports Pixel phones is not automatically confirmed to support Pixel Watch 4. Check current regional eligibility before paying for service. Google’s setup information also describes a US-only offer for eligible Pixel Watch 4 LTE purchasers, but its activation deadline, usage limits, and other conditions can change; do not treat that offer as a universal part of setup. Texting through cellular features can also require a compatible phone number and messaging service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTroubleshoot a watch that is not found
If the app cannot discover the watch, work through the basic checks before resetting anything.
- Verify that Bluetooth is on in the phone’s quick settings or system settings.
- Confirm that Airplane mode is off on both the phone and the watch.
- Move the watch close to the phone, ideally within arm’s reach during discovery.
- Check that the phone can load a webpage or otherwise reach the internet.
- Open the phone’s app permissions and allow the Pixel Watch app to access nearby devices and location.
- Close and reopen the Pixel Watch app, then start setup again from inside the app.
- Restart the watch using the crown, wait for it to finish booting, and retry.
Do not pair the watch from the phone’s ordinary Bluetooth-device list and then expect the app to inherit a complete setup. If an incomplete Bluetooth entry was created, remove that failed entry only when the app or Google’s troubleshooting instructions direct you to do so, then restart the setup flow.
Troubleshoot a setup that stalls
The app remains on a loading or connecting screen
Keep the phone online and leave both devices close together. Confirm the app is current and that the phone has enough battery to complete downloads. If setup has taken more than 20 minutes without progressing, use Google’s Pixel Watch setup troubleshooting flow rather than repeatedly tapping through the same screen. A long pause can indicate an update or account-verification step, so first read the message on the phone and watch before canceling.
The watch connects and then disconnects
Check Bluetooth, nearby-device permission, internet access, and Airplane mode again. A temporary restart often clears a stalled Bluetooth session: hold the crown for about three seconds, choose Restart, wait for the watch to return to its normal screen, and launch the app again. Keep the phone and watch close while the app re-establishes the connection.
The phone was replaced or reset
A watch that was previously paired can show a Can’t connect message when the original phone is no longer available or the phone has been reset. Use Google’s transfer guidance for this situation. Where the guidance calls for it, back up what is available and then reset and re-pair the watch. Treat a reset as a recovery step, not as the first response to a temporary Bluetooth problem.

The wrong watch appears
When multiple watches are nearby, compare the device shown in the app with the watch you are holding before accepting a code. Move unrelated watches away temporarily. Pairing the wrong device can create confusion even when the Bluetooth connection itself succeeds.
Understand the consequences of a factory reset
Google warns that a factory reset erases the watch’s apps, settings, and data. It may help with persistent Can’t pair, Can’t find your watch, or similar errors after the ordinary checks and a restart have failed, but it returns the watch to an out-of-box state.
Use a reset only when the simpler steps fail
- Confirm the phone meets the Android 11.0 requirement and has current software.
- Verify Bluetooth, internet access, nearby-device permission, location permission, and Airplane mode status.
- Restart the watch and retry pairing from the Pixel Watch app.
- Review Google’s transfer instructions if the watch belonged to another phone or the phone was recently reset.
- Reset the watch only after you understand that local apps, settings, and data will be erased and you are ready to set it up again.
After the reset finishes, repeat the first-time pairing process: open the app, select the watch, verify matching codes, sign in, choose restoration or a fresh setup, and wait for the Connected status.

Verify the finished setup
Before leaving the setup screen, check each of these practical results:
- The Pixel Watch app shows Connected.
- The watch responds to taps, the crown, and the side controls.
- The selected wrist and crown orientation matches how you are wearing it.
- Your Google Account appears correctly in the app.
- Any chosen backup restoration has finished, rather than remaining in a pending state.
- Software updates have been allowed to complete.
- If you own an LTE model, cellular activation is either deliberately skipped or confirmed with a supported regional carrier.
Once these checks pass, the essential setup is complete. You can change watch-face, notification, health, and app preferences later without repeating Bluetooth pairing.
Setup details that commonly prevent a smooth first connection
Keep the pairing route consistent
Use the Pixel Watch app for discovery, code confirmation, account sign-in, backup restoration, orientation, and updates. The phone’s Bluetooth menu is useful for checking whether Bluetooth is enabled, but it is not a replacement for the app’s setup flow. Starting in the wrong place can leave an incomplete connection that the app cannot use.
Allow time for account and software steps
Initial setup is more than a one-tap Bluetooth pairing. The app may verify your Google Account, present terms, retrieve a backup, and install watch software. Keep the phone connected to the internet and both devices nearby during these stages. If the app displays a specific prompt, follow that prompt instead of repeatedly closing the app.

Know what LTE does not change
LTE does not remove the Android, Google Account, app, Bluetooth, or initial pairing requirements. Even an LTE watch must first be paired with a compatible phone. Cellular service is an additional, region-dependent configuration after the watch is connected.

Frequently asked questions
Does Pixel Watch 4 work with an iPhone?
The model requirement covered here is most phones running Android 11.0 or newer, together with a Google Account and the Google Pixel Watch app. Do not assume an iPhone is supported for this setup.
Do I need an LTE plan to pair the watch?
No. You can complete Bluetooth and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth setup without cellular service. An eligible carrier plan is needed only if you choose to activate the LTE features on an LTE model.
Why is the watch not appearing in the app?
Check Bluetooth, nearby-device and location permissions, internet access, and Airplane mode on both devices. Bring the watch close, restart it, and reopen the Google Pixel Watch app. If discovery still fails, use Google’s setup troubleshooting flow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What should I do when the two pairing codes differ?
Do not tap Pair. Cancel the attempt, restart the watch by holding the crown for about three seconds and choosing Restart, then begin again in the Pixel Watch app. Approve the connection only when both codes match.
How long should setup take?
Bluetooth pairing can take a few minutes, and updates or restoration can extend the process. If setup has been stalled for more than 20 minutes, follow Google’s setup troubleshooting instructions rather than repeatedly retrying the same screen.
Can I restore a previous Pixel Watch backup?
Yes, when the app offers a backup during setup. Choose the available backup to recover supported settings and app data, or decline restoration for a fresh configuration. If the phone or watch was previously reset, consult Google’s transfer guidance before erasing anything.
What does the purchase-country question mean?
The app may ask where the watch was purchased for warranty information. Select the country of purchase, not simply the country where you are currently traveling.
What is included for charging?
Pixel Watch 4 includes a USB-C Quick Charge Dock. Google specifies a compatible USB-C adapter with at least 7.5 W, but the adapter is not included. Use an adapter you already own if it meets that requirement; buying another one is not automatically necessary.

Should I factory-reset before troubleshooting?
No. First verify compatibility, permissions, Bluetooth, internet access, and Airplane mode, then restart the watch and retry pairing. A factory reset erases apps, settings, and data and should be reserved for persistent errors or transfer situations where Google’s instructions call for it.
How do I activate cellular service later?
After pairing, open the Pixel Watch app and choose its cellular or mobile-network setup option. Follow the instructions for your country and carrier, and confirm that the exact LTE model and your phone number or account are eligible. Carrier support and promotional terms vary by region and can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
