This sequence works whether you are moving from a browser, another password manager, or a shared collection. The exact menus and supported data depend on the source, destination, device, and operating-system version, so check both providers’ current instructions before you begin.

What to decide before moving anything
A password manager migration is not just a file upload. You are choosing where credentials, secure notes, payment records, recovery codes, passkeys, and possibly shared company data will live. A successful-looking import can still omit fields or create duplicates, and an exported file can expose every password in readable form.
Choose the destination using three practical tests:

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Device coverage: Confirm that the official apps and browser extensions support every computer, phone, tablet, and browser on which you sign in.
- Migration path: Check whether the destination accepts your source’s CSV, JSON, or provider-specific export, or whether a supported device offers direct Credential Exchange.
- Recovery you can maintain: Read how the service handles the master password, multi-factor authentication (MFA), recovery codes, emergency access, and account recovery. A recovery method you cannot access when locked out is not a useful plan.
Install the official app and browser extension from the manager’s own distribution channel. Create the account, set its master password, and configure the available recovery arrangements before exporting from the old system. Guidance from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) likewise emphasizes understanding how the master password and account recovery work before relying on a manager.
Map your source and destination
Write down the exact source and destination, the devices you will use for the transfer, and whether the data belongs to you alone or to an organization. Import support is pair-specific: a destination may accept a browser CSV but not every field in it, or support a direct transfer only on certain mobile operating-system versions.
| Question | Why it matters | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| What is the source? | Browsers and password managers export different columns and formats. | Find the source’s current export instructions and note whether the file is CSV, JSON, or another format. |
| What is the destination? | Each manager has its own import menu, accepted formats, and field mapping. | Find the destination’s instructions for your exact source, not a similar product. |
| Which items must move? | Passwords are only one category; notes, identities, payment cards, custom fields, passkeys, and shared items may follow different rules. | Make a short inventory of critical accounts and non-password data you cannot afford to lose. |
| Where will you perform the transfer? | Direct exchange and some import tools depend on device and operating-system version. | Use a supported device and current app version, and do not assume a phone-to-phone route works everywhere. |
| Is any data shared? | Personal and organization vaults can have different permissions and import destinations. | Identify the intended personal vault, organization, collection, or shared folder before selecting Import. |
For example, 1Password documents import routes from browsers and named password managers, while Bitwarden documents standard file import and Credential Exchange. Those routes are not interchangeable assumptions: availability can depend on the operating system and app version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrepare the new vault and recovery plan
Create and test the account
- Install the destination manager’s official app on your primary device.
- Create the account and choose a unique master password that you do not use anywhere else.
- Sign in on the device where you will import, then install the official browser extension if you need browser autofill.
- Confirm that the vault opens and that you know where its security, MFA, and recovery settings are located.
Do not wait until after the import to discover that a required browser, operating system, or account-recovery method is unsupported. If the manager offers recovery codes or an emergency process, follow its instructions and store the recovery information in a separately controlled place. Do not put the only copy inside the vault that you are trying to recover.
Decide whether the destination is personal or shared
Import into the vault that should own the records. A personal vault is appropriate for your private accounts; an organization vault or collection may be required for team credentials. Permissions can affect whether you can later edit, move, or share imported items. If you are migrating a family or work collection, agree in advance who should have access and which records should remain private.

- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Check export and import compatibility
Open the official help pages for both sides and compare the exact source-to-destination route. Look for accepted file extensions, required export passwords, item categories, and any platform restrictions. Save the instructions or keep both help pages open while you work, but do not upload the export to an unapproved website to convert it.
File imports
A CSV is a plain table and is commonly supported, but it may contain only a limited set of fields. Provider-specific JSON can preserve more structure, yet it may require an export password or a particular version of the destination app. Follow the destination’s stated format and field mapping; changing column names by guesswork can silently place data in the wrong fields.

Some managers support a direct Credential Exchange route between apps. This can avoid creating a persistent export file, but it is not a universal phone feature. The reviewed instructions tie availability to supported devices and operating-system versions. If the option is absent, use the documented file route instead of assuming the apps are incompatible.
Items that may not transfer
Ask specifically about passkeys, shared collections, secure notes, payment and identity records, custom fields, attachments, and recovery codes. 1Password states that its CSV export contains limited fields and that a desktop export does not export passkeys; its mobile Credential Exchange export can include passkeys. Its instructions for importing from Bitwarden say that passkeys and items in shared collections are not imported by that route. These examples illustrate why an import-complete message is not proof that every item moved.
Make and protect the export
Export only when you have time to finish the transfer and verify the result. An export is a temporary copy of your credentials, not a backup to leave around indefinitely.

- Close unrelated applications and choose a local, controlled location for the file.
- Start the export from the source manager or browser using its official settings path.
- If the source offers an encrypted or password-protected export that the destination supports, use it and record the export password only in the destination’s documented workflow.
- Do not email the file, upload it to cloud storage, attach it to a ticket, or leave it in a shared downloads folder.
- Keep the file only for the duration of the import and verification.
1Password’s support documentation gives the relevant warning plainly: “Exported data files are not encrypted. They are stored in plaintext. Anyone with access to your exported data files will be able to read your passwords.” Its guidance also says not to email exports or store them online and to delete them when finished. Treat any unencrypted CSV or JSON the same way, regardless of which source produced it.
Import once into the intended vault
Use the destination’s import menu
- Open the destination manager and select the intended personal vault, organization, or collection.
- Open its Import or Import data command and choose the exact source format.
- Select the export file. If the format is password-protected JSON, enter the export password when prompted.
- Review the destination’s summary, field mapping, and destination vault before confirming.
- Start the import once, wait for it to finish, and note any errors or skipped records.
Do not repeat the import simply because the first screen looks incomplete. Inspect the vault and the import report first. Bitwarden’s official guidance warns: “Importing does not check for duplicates. If you import the same file more than once or import items already in your vault, duplicate items will be created.” If a retry is necessary, remove or isolate the partial records according to the destination’s instructions and use a corrected file.
Prevent a wrong-vault mistake
Before clicking the final confirmation, check the account name, organization name, and collection shown in the import screen. A personal export placed into a shared collection can disclose private credentials; a work export placed in a personal vault can break team access and retention rules. If the destination does not let you select a collection during import, import into the documented default and move records afterward using its normal controls.
Verify the migration before abandoning the old manager
Verification should be deliberate rather than a quick item count. Keep the old manager or browser data available until the accounts you depend on work from the new vault.
Check critical sign-ins
- Make a list of high-impact accounts such as your primary email, financial services, identity provider, mobile carrier, work systems, and the account used to administer the password manager.
- Use the new manager to fill the username and password for each service in a private browser window or a normal sign-in flow.
- Confirm that the login succeeds and that the new manager saves or updates the record correctly.
- For accounts with MFA, test the second factor and confirm that recovery codes or alternate methods remain available.
Do not change every password as part of the move unless you have a separate reason. Migration is about transferring records; unnecessary simultaneous password changes make it harder to identify which step failed.

Audit item categories and fields
Compare the source and destination for a representative sample, then inspect every category that matters to you:
- Login usernames, passwords, URLs, and multiple login entries for the same service.
- Secure notes, software licenses, identity records, and payment cards.
- Custom fields, tags, folders, attachments, and linked items.
- Shared collections, organization permissions, and records owned by someone else.
- Passkeys and device-bound credentials.
- One-time passwords, recovery codes, and other MFA details.
Export formats can omit or flatten these fields. Record anything absent and recreate it manually in the new vault or through the destination’s supported transfer route. Never assume an empty custom field or missing passkey is an import error that will resolve by running the same file again.
Check autofill on each device
After the vault contents are correct, test the browser extension and mobile autofill on the devices you actually use. Confirm that the extension is signed in to the new account, the operating system has granted autofill permission, and the correct login is selected when a site has more than one account. A vault can contain the right record while autofill remains disabled or points to the old browser store.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Secure MFA and account recovery
Enable an MFA method supported by the destination manager after you have confirmed that the account works. MFA adds protection beyond a username and password, but it also creates another recovery dependency.
- Prefer a phishing-resistant method, such as a security key, when the manager supports it and you have a practical recovery route.
- Enroll a backup method only if you can protect it; do not leave recovery codes in the unencrypted export you are about to delete.
- Check whether the service supports more than one security key, a recovery code, an emergency contact, or an administrator-assisted process.
- Test the recovery instructions while you are still signed in, without intentionally locking yourself out.
A physical security key is optional, not a requirement for migration. Its usefulness depends on the manager’s supported MFA methods, the devices you own, and your ability to recover if the key is lost. CISA’s MFA and FIDO guidance is a useful reference for understanding these trade-offs, but the destination manager’s current recovery rules control what will actually work.

Clean up exposed and obsolete copies
Only clean up after the new vault has passed your critical-account and item-coverage checks.
- Delete the temporary export file from the local folder.
- Empty the operating system’s recycle bin or trash if it retains deleted files.
- Remove any duplicate export copies from removable media, temporary folders, and old backups that you created for this migration.
- Delete or disable saved passwords in the old browser and remove the old manager’s extension or app when you no longer need it.
- Keep the old manager active only for accounts or shared collections that you have not yet verified.
Bitwarden specifically directs users to delete the exported file after import. The same principle applies to any plaintext export: once verification is complete, retaining it creates an avoidable credential exposure.
Migration paths by starting point
From a web browser
Browsers typically export a CSV through their password settings. The browser may warn that the file is readable; heed that warning. Import the CSV using the destination’s browser-import instructions, then inspect fields such as URLs, duplicate usernames, notes, and passkeys separately. Browser exports often represent only passwords, so check the browser’s passkey and payment-data stores independently before deleting saved credentials.
From another password manager
Prefer the destination’s named import route when one exists because it may map folders, notes, or custom fields more accurately than a generic CSV. Read whether shared collections and passkeys are included. If the source offers both a provider-specific export and CSV, choose the format the destination explicitly recommends rather than the one that merely looks more complete.
From a shared or organization vault
Confirm ownership and permission before exporting. A member may not be authorized to export every organization record, and importing into a personal vault can violate workplace or family agreements. Coordinate with the administrator, select the correct organization collection, and verify that access remains available to the other people who rely on those records.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| The destination rejects the file. | Wrong format, unsupported version, damaged export, or an encrypted file whose password was not supplied. | Read the destination’s exact format instructions, create one fresh export, and retry once after confirming the required password or app version. |
| The import finishes but records are missing. | The format does not carry those item types or the route excludes passkeys, shared items, notes, or custom fields. | Compare the supported-item list and recreate or transfer omitted data through a documented route. |
| There are duplicate logins. | The vault already contained records or the file was imported more than once. | Stop importing, identify the original and duplicate records, and merge or delete them manually using the destination’s controls. |
| Autofill does not work. | The extension or mobile autofill permission is disabled, the wrong account is signed in, or the site has multiple matching records. | Enable the destination’s extension or autofill permission, sign in to the correct account, and test the record on the actual device. |
| You cannot recover the new account. | The master password, MFA device, or recovery method is unavailable. | Use the provider’s documented recovery process; do not delete the old vault until recovery and critical-account access are confirmed. |
A final pre-deletion checklist
- The destination app and browser extension work on every device you use.
- The source format and destination import route were confirmed for the exact pair.
- The intended personal or shared vault was selected before import.
- The export was imported once, and you inspected the vault before considering a retry.
- Primary email, financial, work, identity, and manager-admin accounts sign in successfully from the new vault.
- Passkeys, shared items, notes, payment records, custom fields, and recovery codes were checked separately.
- MFA and account-recovery options are configured and usable.
- The temporary export and all unnecessary copies have been deleted, including trash or recycle-bin copies.
- The old browser or manager is retired only after unresolved accounts and shared collections are accounted for.
