melonDS is the most practical cross-platform starting point for Nintendo DS emulation because the project publishes builds for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. Download the build for your system from the official melonDS download page, install or extract it, choose a directory containing your legally obtained .nds game dumps, configure controls, and add BIOS or firmware dumps from your own Nintendo DS hardware if the build requires them.

This guide covers installation on each platform, BIOS and firmware placement, keyboard and controller setup, touch-screen and microphone input, save states, Android-specific cautions, and fixes for the errors most often mistaken for incompatibility.

What you need before installing

A DS emulator cannot supply games or Nintendo system software for you. Prepare these items first:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A computer or Android device running a supported operating-system build.
  • A melonDS download that matches your operating system and, where applicable, CPU architecture. The official project page lists Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android builds: https://melonds.org/download/.
  • Legally obtained Nintendo DS game dumps in .nds format. Use games you own and create the dumps yourself; do not download commercial ROM collections.
  • BIOS and firmware dumps made from your own Nintendo DS hardware when the emulator asks for them. Do not download Nintendo BIOS or firmware files from an unofficial site.
  • A keyboard, plus an optional USB or Bluetooth gamepad. Desktop joystick support is documented, while Android controller compatibility depends on the specific port and release.
  • Enough storage for your own game dumps, emulator files, save data, and optional system-file backups. No authoritative minimum CPU, GPU, RAM, or frame-rate figures are published in the cited project material, so avoid treating an arbitrary online specification as an official requirement.

Choose an emulator

melonDS is the logical first choice when you want one setup method that spans desktop systems and Android. Its project documentation lists support for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android, and documents joystick input, save states, microphone and lid controls, with Wi-Fi or local multiplayer and DSi emulation described as works in progress. Those latter features can change between releases.

  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

DeSmuME is a documented alternative for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its FAQ describes loading external BIOS files on all three desktop platforms, while external firmware loading is supported on Windows and Mac but not Linux according to that FAQ. Because package names, menu labels, and compatibility change, use the instructions supplied with the exact build you install rather than copying paths from an unrelated tutorial.

Consideration melonDS DeSmuME
Operating systems documented in the supplied project material Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android Windows, macOS, and Linux
BIOS handling Requires BIOS and firmware dumps from a DS when requested by the build External BIOS loading documented for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Firmware handling Use a dump from your own DS when required External firmware loading documented for Windows and Mac; not supported on Linux in the cited FAQ

Wi-Fi, local multiplayer, and DSi emulation Described by the project as work in progress and therefore version-sensitive Not established in the cited material
Android Build availability is listed, but Android ports and support channels should be verified for each release Not documented in the supplied material

Install melonDS on Windows

1. Download and extract the correct build

  1. Open https://melonds.org/download/ and choose the Windows build.
  2. If the download is an archive, extract the complete folder to a location you control, such as a dedicated emulator folder. Keep the executable with any files included in the archive; moving only the executable can break relative paths.
  3. Start the melonDS executable. If Windows displays a security warning, verify that you obtained the file from the official project source before allowing it to run.

2. Create a games directory

  1. Create a folder for your own Nintendo DS dumps. Keeping games in one directory makes library selection and backups easier.
  2. In melonDS, open the game or library directory setting and select that folder. The exact menu wording can differ by build.
  3. Choose a valid .nds file to test the configuration. A 3DS image or another archive is not a Nintendo DS game dump and will not validate the setup.

3. Configure keyboard or USB-controller input

  1. Open the emulator’s input configuration.
  2. Map the directional buttons and A, B, X, Y, Start, and Select to keyboard keys or a connected USB gamepad.
  3. Assign controls for the DS touch screen, microphone action, and lid or hinge action if your game uses them. Keep a keyboard mapping available while testing a controller so you can tell whether a problem is caused by the gamepad.
  4. Save the profile and test each input in a game before changing multiple settings at once.

4. Add BIOS and firmware dumps when requested

melonDS states that it requires BIOS and firmware dumps from a Nintendo DS. In the emulator’s system-file settings, browse to the files dumped from your own hardware and confirm the filenames and permissions. The interface may show separate fields for ARM9 BIOS, ARM7 BIOS, and firmware; follow the labels in your release rather than guessing a path. If the emulator starts without external files in a particular build, that does not give you permission to obtain Nintendo system files from the internet.

Install melonDS on macOS

1. Open the official application

  1. Download the macOS build from the official melonDS page.
  2. Open the application or move it to your Applications folder if that is how the downloaded package is presented.
  3. macOS may display a security prompt for an application downloaded from the internet. Approve it only after confirming that the file came from the official project source. If macOS blocks the first launch, use the system’s normal application-security controls rather than downloading a modified copy from a third-party mirror.

2. Select the ROM directory

  1. Make a folder for your legally created .nds dumps.
  2. Use melonDS’s game-directory or library setting to select it.
  3. Open one known-good dump to confirm that the application can read the folder. If macOS asks for file access, grant access to the directory that contains your games and, separately, to the directories containing your own BIOS and firmware dumps.

3. Map all DS inputs

In the input configuration, assign keyboard or controller buttons for the directional pad, face buttons, Start, Select, touch-screen interaction, microphone activation, and lid state. A game that expects a spoken command or a closed-lid event can appear frozen if those inputs have never been mapped, so configure them before diagnosing the game file.

4. Load system files if required

DeSmuME’s FAQ documents external BIOS loading on macOS and external firmware support on Mac. melonDS likewise expects BIOS and firmware dumps when its configuration requires them. Point the settings to dumps made from your own DS and keep those files in a backed-up directory with permissions that allow the emulator to read them.

Install on Linux

1. Choose a package or project build

  1. Use the Linux build listed on the melonDS download page, or use a distribution package when your distribution provides an appropriate current package.
  2. Install the package through your distribution’s normal software method, or extract the project archive and launch the supplied executable according to its included instructions.
  3. Check that the build matches your distribution and CPU architecture. A Windows executable, an Android package, or a 3DS image is not interchangeable with a Linux build.

2. Point the emulator at your games

  1. Create a directory containing your legally obtained .nds dumps.
  2. Launch melonDS and choose that directory in the game or ROM-directory setting.
  3. Open one known-good file and confirm that the emulator can read it. If the application reports a permission error, check the directory’s ownership and read permissions before changing emulator settings.

3. Configure keyboard and joystick input

Open the input configuration and map the keyboard first. Then connect a joystick or USB gamepad and assign its controls, including touch-screen interaction and any microphone or lid actions needed by the game. Test one button at a time; this prevents a controller-axis problem from being mistaken for a failed ROM.

4. Handle BIOS and firmware correctly

The DeSmuME FAQ documents external BIOS loading on Linux but says external firmware loading is not supported there. melonDS requires BIOS and firmware dumps when its build requests them. These differences are emulator-specific: do not copy Windows paths or firmware instructions into a Linux installation. Read the current instructions for the exact release, point BIOS settings to dumps from your own DS, and verify that the Linux process can read the files.

Install melonDS on Android

1. Verify the distribution channel

  1. Start from the project’s current Android distribution channel and confirm who maintains the package and when it was released. The existence of an Android download does not mean every third-party port is maintained by the main project.
  2. The melonDS FAQ notes that unofficial Android ports are not developed or supported by that FAQ’s project. Treat an unfamiliar APK, mirror, or abandoned fork cautiously and avoid installing a package whose maintainer and source cannot be identified.
  3. Install the current build through the channel you have verified. Android menu names and permission prompts differ by version.

2. Grant storage access and select games

  1. When Android requests file access, grant access to the directory that contains your legally obtained .nds files. On newer Android versions, you may need to select a folder through the system file picker instead of granting broad storage access.
  2. Choose the games directory in melonDS and open a known-good dump.
  3. If the game list is empty, return to the Android file picker and confirm that you selected the folder containing the files themselves, not only a parent folder that the emulator cannot browse.

3. Configure touch and optional controller input

Set the on-screen controls for the directional pad, face buttons, Start, and Select. Test touch-screen gestures in a game that uses the lower display. A Bluetooth gamepad can be tried as an optional accessory, but Android-specific controller compatibility was not established in the cited documentation; button names, axis behavior, and pairing reliability may vary by device, Android release, and port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Add system files only from your own hardware

If the Android build asks for BIOS or firmware, use dumps made from your own Nintendo DS and select them through the app’s file browser. Do not download Nintendo system files. Keep a copy of the dumps in a location you can select again after an app update or reinstall.

BIOS, firmware, and game dumps explained

BIOS and firmware are different files

BIOS files provide low-level system code, while firmware stores configuration and startup data. An emulator may require one, both, or neither depending on its mode and release. melonDS documentation states that BIOS and firmware dumps from a DS are required. DeSmuME’s documented behavior differs by operating system, particularly for firmware on Linux.

Make your own dumps

The melonDS FAQ says users can dump cartridges with a DSi or 3DS and copy the resulting files to a computer. The lawful route is to dump hardware and games you own, retain the resulting files for personal use, and avoid websites offering Nintendo BIOS, firmware, or commercial ROM collections.

Check paths, names, and permissions

  • Use the emulator’s system-file settings instead of placing files randomly beside the executable.
  • Recheck every path after moving the emulator, changing a user account, or reinstalling Android.
  • Confirm that the selected file is the dump expected by the setting and that the emulator account can read it.
  • Keep BIOS, firmware, and game dumps in separate, clearly named folders so a failed game scan does not hide a system-file mistake.

Controls and DS-specific features

Keyboard and gamepad mapping

Map the essential buttons first, then test touch, microphone, and lid inputs. A desktop USB gamepad is optional because joystick support is documented for melonDS; it is not a prerequisite for installation. On Android, test the built-in touch controls before pairing a Bluetooth controller so you have a working fallback.

Touch screen, microphone, and lid events

The DS has two displays and inputs that ordinary consoles do not. Use the emulator’s touch interface for the lower screen, assign a key or button for microphone input where offered, and map a lid-open or lid-close action when a game expects it. If a title appears to stop at a prompt, check these mappings before replacing the game dump.

  • USB Wired Gamepad (PS architecture) - Does not support the Xbox 360 / Xbox One / Mac OS

Save states and normal saves

melonDS lists save-state support. Use save states as a convenience, but also make normal in-game saves and back up the emulator’s save-data directory. A save state can become unusable after a configuration or emulator change, whereas an in-game save is designed to be read by the title itself.

Wi-Fi, local multiplayer, and DSi features

melonDS describes Wi-Fi or local multiplayer and DSi emulation as works in progress. Their behavior is therefore version-sensitive and should not be treated as guaranteed merely because the main emulator launches a game. Check the current release notes or FAQ for your build before planning a multiplayer session or a DSi-specific feature.

Troubleshooting: identify the failing layer

The game does not appear in the library

  1. Confirm that the file is a valid Nintendo DS .nds dump, not a 3DS image, a compressed archive the build cannot read, or an unrelated file.
  2. Open the directory setting again and select the folder containing the file itself.
  3. Check read permissions and Android storage access.
  4. Test a known-good legally obtained dump to separate a game-file problem from a directory or emulator problem.

The emulator says BIOS or firmware is missing

  1. Open the system-file settings and inspect each path.
  2. Verify the filenames and that the files were dumped from your own DS hardware.
  3. Check that the operating-system account running the emulator can read them.
  4. On Linux with DeSmuME, remember that the cited FAQ documents BIOS loading but not external firmware loading; follow that emulator’s current Linux guidance instead of forcing a Windows or Mac firmware workflow.

The application will not start

  • Confirm that you downloaded the build for the correct operating system and CPU architecture.
  • On macOS, approve the security prompt only for a file obtained from the official project source.
  • On Windows or Linux, extract the complete archive rather than launching an executable separated from its supporting files.
  • Check the emulator’s current release notes or FAQ for a build-specific startup fix.

Buttons or touch controls do nothing

  1. Reset the input profile to its defaults.
  2. Map and test keyboard controls before testing a USB or Bluetooth controller.
  3. Check that the controller is connected before opening the input configuration.
  4. Assign touch-screen, microphone, and lid actions separately; a working directional pad does not prove that special DS inputs are configured.

Android controller pairing fails

Use the on-screen controls to confirm that the game and emulator are otherwise working. Then pair the gamepad through Android’s Bluetooth settings, reopen the emulator’s input configuration, and test each button and axis. Because Android-specific controller compatibility was not established in the cited documentation, a failure may be specific to the port or device rather than to the game dump.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiplayer or DSi functionality is unreliable

Check the exact emulator version and its current documentation. melonDS labels Wi-Fi, local multiplayer, and DSi emulation as works in progress, so an older tutorial may describe behavior that has changed or is not implemented in your build.

Back up and update without losing your setup

  1. Back up your emulator configuration, BIOS and firmware dumps, game saves, and any save states before replacing the application.
  2. Record the game-directory path and input mappings. Android updates may change storage permissions, while desktop updates may alter configuration locations.
  3. Read the release notes or FAQ for the new build before enabling experimental Wi-Fi, DSi, or Android-specific features.
  4. Test one known-good game, its normal save, touch input, and your primary controller after updating.
  5. Keep the previous working build until the new one has passed those checks, particularly if you depend on a work-in-progress feature.

A reliable first-run checklist

  • Download melonDS from https://melonds.org/download/ and select the build for your operating system.
  • Extract or install the complete package.
  • Create a directory for legally obtained .nds dumps and select it in the emulator.
  • Provide BIOS and firmware dumps from your own DS hardware when requested.
  • Map keyboard or touch controls, then add a USB or Bluetooth gamepad if desired.
  • Test touch-screen, microphone, and lid inputs for games that need them.
  • Make a normal in-game save and a backup before experimenting with save states or work-in-progress networking features.
  • If something fails, test the file type, build architecture, paths, permissions, and input mappings in that order.
