For a practical PC setup, use Mupen64Plus with its SDL input plugin: connect your gamepad before starting the emulator, let it detect the device or map it manually, then test a dual-analog layout in GoldenEye 007. The steps below apply to Mupen64Plus SDL input—not universally to RetroArch or Project64, whose controller settings differ.
What you need before you start
- A Mupen64Plus build for your operating system. Follow the instructions packaged with that release if they differ from the project’s latest-code documentation; the project notes that its README may describe unreleased code: Mupen64Plus README.
- A PC gamepad connected before you launch the emulator. Mupen64Plus SDL input can automatically configure recognized joysticks; if no supported joystick is present, its documented fallback is keyboard input.
- A game image you are authorized to use. The steps here explain how to launch an image, not where to obtain one. Rules for copying or downloading games vary by jurisdiction, so check applicable law and use authorized sources.
Launch the game in Mupen64Plus
The documented command form is mupen64plus [parameter(s)] rom, where rom is the path to the game image. Optional parameters can select fullscreen and input, graphics, audio, or RSP plugins. Exact installation and launch details depend on the operating system and build; use the documentation included with your release.

Map a gamepad for GoldenEye 007
Start with automatic detection
Connect the controller before starting Mupen64Plus, then launch the game. The SDL input plugin may configure a recognized joystick automatically. Its configuration separates simulated controllers 1 through 4 and includes fields for the selected device, device name, whether the controller is plugged in, pak type, deadzone, and button or axis bindings.
Try a reachable dual-analog layout
The N64 controller has analog movement plus four C-button directions, a D-pad, A and B, Start, Z, and L/R. A useful starting arrangement on a modern pad is:
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- Left stick: N64 analog movement.
- Face buttons: A and B.
- A shoulder button or trigger: Z.
- Right stick: the four C-button directions, if the pad and plugin allow it.
Mupen64Plus’s input documentation includes an example that maps a second analog stick to C buttons and notes that the axes can be swapped to put movement on the other stick. This is a starting point, not a tested GoldenEye preset; controller layouts and axis reports vary.
Choose and test an in-game control scheme
Open GoldenEye’s control options and choose a scheme that works with the buttons you mapped. The exact menu wording and a universally best scheme are not established here, so rely on the labels shown by your game version. Test movement, aiming, firing, and menu navigation before adjusting sensitivity. If aiming feels uncomfortable, change the in-game scheme or remap controls and test again rather than assuming one sensitivity value suits every pad.

If you need a controller, a USB gamepad for PC is an optional choice—not a guaranteed plug-and-play solution. Check that your operating system recognizes it and that it has the sticks, face buttons, and shoulder controls you want; unfamiliar devices may need manual configuration.

- 【Supported Operating System】The Game Controller is specifically designed for playing classic old school retro snes games on computer or laptop. Compatible with Windows 98 / ME / Vista / 2000/2003 / XP / 7 / 8 / 8.1 / 10/11, Mac OS X/ OS X 10.0 and beyond, Raspberry Pi, Raspberry PI 2 model B,Model A, Raspberry Pi 1 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 2,Raspberry Pi OS, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3, Raspberry Pi Zero.
- 【Simple USB Plug and Play】If your program or application accepts USB controller input, this classic game controller do not need install drivers or patches. 1.5 meter external cable(approx. 5 ft. Long). Notice: Please download the game emulator first before start the games, and then you must manually set the buttons and directionals within the emulator you're using, and the controller not automatically assigns buttons/directional axes. If on the Steam platform, you need to first enable Steam's "Universal Controller Configuration Support" and then restart Steam. After entering the game, you also need to manually bind key positions in the game
- 【High Sensitivity without Delay】Super sensitive buttons for precision control: 6 fire buttons, a 'Start' button and a 'Select' button, motion control cross. Play your favorite old school games with classic retro feel. Fits perfectly in the hand and also perfect for two player action.Note: Not applicable to Switch/PS games. Not Compatible with TV/ TV Box, third Mini Games Box and Tesla Model 3
- 【Supported Game Emulators】The game controller works with most emulators. Download any emulator you wish to download and use from Google and do the same with ROMS. Notice:Third party controller, not original controller. But it works phenomenal with the Raspberry Pi game emulation and so on

| N64 control | Default keyboard input |
|---|---|
| Analog pad | Arrow keys |
| C-up, C-left, C-down, C-right | I, J, K, L |
| D-pad | W, A, S, D |
| Z trigger | Z |
| Left and right triggers | X and C |
| Start | Enter |
| A and B | Left Shift and left Control |
Arrow-key movement normally simulates full stick deflection. Hold Right Control to reduce it by 50%, Right Shift to reduce it by 25%, or both to reduce it by 75%. These defaults are a fallback, not an action-game-optimized keyboard layout. You can remap them in the configuration file, but its location depends on operating system and documentation version.

“No auto-configuration found for device”
Check the detected device name, then inspect InputAutoCfg.ini. Mupen64Plus documents adding or renaming a section to match that name. You can use a nearby mapping as a template only when its syntax and hardware controls fit your device; correct the button and axis assignments rather than assuming a similar name means an identical layout.

“No joysticks/controllers found” or no response in game
- Confirm the operating system sees the controller and that it was connected before launching the emulator.
- Check that the intended device is selected for simulated controller 1 and that the controller is marked plugged in.
- Verify that button numbers and axis numbers match the actual gamepad. Mupen64Plus’s configuration guidance recommends joystick-testing utilities for identifying buttons, axes, and hats.
Stick direction is wrong or it does not move
Check the X and Y axis numbers and whether each binding uses the positive or negative direction. Also verify the SDL device selection and the configured analog deadzone and peak values. Those settings are device- and configuration-dependent; the documentation does not establish one correct value for every controller.
The D-pad does not work as a hat
Some controllers report D-pad directions as axes rather than a hat switch. In that case, use axis syntax in the mapping instead of hat() bindings.
Best Value
- Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
- Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
- Rumble vibration.
- Support turbo function.
Use a mouse only if that suits your setup
Mupen64Plus input configuration can map mouse movement to the N64 analog stick and mouse buttons to controller buttons. Enabling mouse input grabs and hides the pointer; the documented toggle is Left Control + Left Alt.
Keep the instructions matched to your emulator
These configuration details are for Mupen64Plus SDL input. RetroArch cores, front ends, and Project64 input plugins may store controller mappings elsewhere, so do not edit Mupen64Plus configuration files for those setups. The steps above do not establish a current, version-specific workflow for those alternatives.
