Prepare before turning the TV on
Put the remote, its batteries, your Wi-Fi network name and password, and any account credentials you plan to use within reach. If the television will use a streaming box, game console, disc player, soundbar, or receiver, note which HDMI port each device occupies. Some HDMI ports have special labels such as ARC or eARC, and those labels matter later.
- Place the TV where the screen is not hit by direct sunlight or a bright lamp. Reflections can make a perfectly calibrated image look washed out.
- Ensure the set has ventilation around its openings and that the power cable can reach a safe outlet without being pinched.
- If you intend to use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, run the cable to the TV before setup so you can choose that connection when prompted.
- Keep the model number available. It is usually printed on the rear label, packaging, or the TV’s support screen, and it is the key to finding the correct manual.
If a streaming device is connected, select the HDMI input where it is attached when the TV asks which source you want to use. You can change inputs later, but selecting the correct one now prevents the common impression that the TV or streamer is not working.

Choose a setup method and decide whether you need an account
Many smart TVs offer a phone-assisted setup, a manual setup with the remote, or both. Phone setup can make password entry and account sign-in faster, but it is not available on every model or in every region. Manual setup is slower but does not require a compatible phone.
| Setup choice | What it does | Best when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone-assisted | Transfers network and account details from an eligible phone or app. | You want faster text entry and the TV explicitly offers the feature. | Availability depends on the TV, phone, software version, and region. |
| Manual remote setup | Uses the on-screen keyboard and remote to select a network and enter credentials. | You prefer not to link a phone or the phone option is unavailable. | Typing long passwords takes more time. |
| Basic TV mode | Provides core television functions without a full smart-TV account experience. | You mainly watch broadcasts or devices connected by HDMI and want fewer online services. | Only some Google TV devices offer it; streaming, profiles, recommendations, and other functions may be unavailable. |
Google TV’s setup help says a Google Account and a Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection are normally used, while some devices offer a basic mode without an account and/or internet connection. The choice is model- and region-dependent. Do not assume that a different brand requires the same account: follow the prompt shown by your set.
- Turn on the TV and select your language, country or region, and time-zone choices when requested. These settings can affect available apps, broadcasts, terms, and privacy options.
- Choose phone-assisted or remote setup if both appear. If the phone method asks you to scan a code, confirm that the code is displayed on the TV itself before continuing.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. If you are offered a basic mode and do not want an account, read what will be disabled before selecting it.
- Read each agreement and permission screen instead of accepting a bundle automatically. Account terms, app terms, voice permissions, advertising settings, and viewing-information choices can be separate.
- Create or sign in to an account only if the services you want require it. Use a unique password and enable the account’s security options where available.
Google’s official setup guidance includes this warning: “Important: Some regions or manufacturers may have additional terms, conditions, or charges.” Treat that as a reason to read the screens presented for your own country and model, not as a universal fee.
Connect the TV to a reliable network
During setup, select the intended Wi-Fi network by its exact name and enter the password carefully. If your router broadcasts separate bands, note which one the TV joins. A television in the same room as the router may work well on either band; a distant set can behave differently because walls, congestion, and the TV’s wireless hardware affect the result.
When Wi-Fi is the right choice
Wi-Fi avoids running a cable and is sufficient when the signal is stable where the TV sits. If the TV offers a choice between bands and supports it, 5 GHz can be useful in a nearby, less-congested location. Some Google TV devices require 5 GHz for the documented setup path, so check the model’s requirements rather than treating that as a rule for every television.

When to use Ethernet
Use Ethernet when Wi-Fi drops, buffers, or cannot reach the room reliably and the TV has a network port. A cable also removes the television’s wireless link from the troubleshooting chain. It does not fix an unavailable internet service, a faulty router, or an account problem, but it is a sensible test: if Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, focus on wireless coverage or compatibility.
Network checks after setup
- Open the TV’s network or connection screen and verify that the displayed network name is the one you intended.
- Run the built-in connection test if the TV provides one. Confirm both local-network and internet status; a TV can be connected to the router while the internet service is down.
- If the connection is unstable, check the band in use, try 5 GHz when supported, move the router or access point closer, or test Ethernet.
- Be aware that WPA2-Enterprise is not supported for the specific Google TV setup path documented by Google. A home network using a different security arrangement may need a model-specific workaround or a separate network.
Install system and app updates before judging performance
Once the TV is online, open its System, About, Support, or Software Update area and check for updates. The exact label and location differ by platform. Install the television’s system update first, then update built-in apps if the TV offers a separate app store or update screen. Keep the set connected to power and do not unplug it during installation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
An update can change menu labels, add or remove features, improve compatibility, or resolve network and audio bugs. After a major update, revisit the picture, sound, and privacy pages because a software release can add a new option or restore a default.
Set the picture for your room and what you watch
Open the menu labeled Picture, Display, or Picture & Sound. Start with a preset rather than changing every slider. Presets are designed for broad uses such as ordinary television, cinema viewing, sports, or games, but their names and behavior vary by model.
Choose a starting preset
- Movies and series: A Cinema, Movie, Filmmaker, or similarly named mode is usually the appropriate starting point for a dim room and cinematic content, if your model provides it.
- Games: A Game mode may reduce processing that adds delay. It can also change brightness, contrast, or motion handling, so compare it with your normal mode using the console or PC you actually play on.
- Bright rooms or daytime viewing: A Standard or similarly moderate mode may be easier to see than a cinema preset. Avoid assuming that the brightest preset is the most accurate; it can exaggerate highlights and tire your eyes.
- Automatic or intelligent modes: Some sets analyze the surroundings, the content, or usage patterns and adjust the image. Samsung describes Intelligent Mode as available only on select models and capable of using those inputs. Treat it as an optional convenience, not a universal reference setting.
LG’s support guidance likewise frames presets around environment, preference, and video type, while Sony’s guides describe examples such as Cinema and Game with options that vary by model. Those examples illustrate why a value that works on one television can be wrong on another.

Adjust one control at a time
Do not copy universal brightness, contrast, sharpness, or color-temperature numbers from another TV. Panel type, firmware, picture mode, room lighting, and the source signal all affect the result. Change one control, watch familiar content for a moment, and record what you changed so you can undo it.
- Set overall brightness for comfortable shadow detail without making black areas look gray.
- Set contrast so bright details remain visible instead of turning into a flat white patch.
- Use sharpness sparingly; excessive sharpening can create outlines around text and faces.
- Choose a color temperature that looks natural to you, then leave it alone while comparing other changes.
- Disable or reduce motion processing if films look unnaturally smooth, but test sports and live content separately because motion preferences are personal.
If a label is missing or a control is grayed out, the current source or preset may restrict it. Consult the operating instructions for the exact model rather than forcing a different mode or assuming the TV is defective.
Choose where sound should come from
Decide first whether you will use the built-in speakers, headphones, a soundbar, or an AV receiver. The menu may be called Sound Output, Audio Output, Speakers, or a similar term. LG’s support material, for example, separates TV speakers from external audio equipment; other platforms use different wording.
Using the built-in speakers
Select TV speakers when you want the simplest arrangement. Then set volume, balance, and any dialogue or night-listening options your model offers. If voices are hard to understand, try a speech-enhancement option before raising every frequency or enabling several competing effects.
Connecting a soundbar or receiver with ARC/eARC
ARC (Audio Return Channel) and eARC allow the TV to send audio back to a compatible soundbar or receiver through the HDMI port marked ARC or eARC. Connect that port on the TV to the matching port on the audio device, then select the external audio output in the TV menu.

- Turn off both devices or follow their manuals for a safe connection sequence.
- Use the TV’s designated ARC/eARC HDMI port, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- Enable HDMI control or CEC if the devices need coordinated power and input switching. The feature has different names across brands.
- Enable eARC only when the TV and audio device both support it and the cable and source chain are suitable.
- Select a format that every device in the chain supports. Google advises choosing only supported formats because an unsupported selection can cause audio or video problems.
- Play a known source and confirm that volume control, mute, and power behavior work as expected. If they do not, check the TV and soundbar manuals for CEC and ARC troubleshooting.
ARC/eARC is a connection capability, not a guarantee that every format or control feature will work. The HDMI cable, TV, soundbar, receiver, and source device all matter. A documented troubleshooting path for one television model—for example, a TCL 6-Series case—should not be copied as a universal menu route.
Fix common external-audio failures
- No sound: Confirm the TV output is set to HDMI ARC/eARC or external audio, the soundbar is on the matching input, and both ends use the labeled HDMI ports.
- Intermittent sound: Temporarily disable eARC or advanced formats to isolate a compatibility problem, then consult both device manuals before re-enabling features.
- Remote does not control volume: Check HDMI-CEC on every device. CEC can coordinate control, but implementations differ.
- Some apps work and others do not: Test the TV’s internal app and an HDMI source separately. The supported output format can differ by source.
Review privacy, advertising, voice, and viewing-information choices
Onboarding is also a data and account decision. Pause at screens about account linking, personalized recommendations, voice assistants, advertising, diagnostics, and viewing information. Feature names differ, so read the description attached to each switch instead of relying on its color or position.
Accounts and profiles
Signing in can synchronize profiles, media choices, and activity across supported devices. Google explains that profiles can sync media and activity, while Google TV and Android TV may display labeled advertisements. If you do not need synchronized recommendations or app purchases, consider basic mode or a limited setup where the model supports it.
Voice assistants
Voice control can make search and navigation easier, but enabling it may involve microphone access and voice-processing terms. Check whether the TV has a physical microphone switch or indicator, whether wake-word detection can be disabled, and which account receives voice activity. These controls are model-specific.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePersonalization and viewing information
Some televisions use viewing or device information to personalize recommendations or measure audiences. Samsung documents Intelligent Mode on select models as analyzing content, surroundings, and usage patterns. LG’s corporate explanation says automatic content recognition (ACR) information may be used for audience segmentation and viewing or audience-trend analysis where the feature is available and enabled.
Best Value
These examples are not proof that every television behaves the same way. Review the current privacy panel for your exact model and country, and open the manufacturer’s privacy documentation if a description is unclear. Turning off one named feature should not be treated as a promise that all data collection stops; different services and legal notices can cover separate processing.
Run a first-day verification pass
Before putting the remote away, verify the complete setup under normal use rather than relying only on the welcome screen.
- Switch among the TV’s internal apps and each HDMI source you plan to use.
- Confirm that the picture mode you chose remains active for the intended source; many TVs store modes separately for different inputs.
- Play speech-heavy content and music, then verify the selected speaker or soundbar output and volume control.
- Restart the TV once and check that it reconnects to the intended network without asking for credentials again.
- Open the system-information page and note the software version and model number for future support requests.
- Revisit the privacy page if a later update or newly installed app introduces another permission request.
Troubleshooting decision guide
The TV cannot find your Wi-Fi
Check that the router is broadcasting, verify the network name on another device, and move the TV or router closer for the initial connection. If the router uses separate bands, try the band the TV supports. Use Ethernet if available, then check the model’s network requirements; do not assume an enterprise network or every security mode is supported.
The TV connects but streaming buffers
Run the TV’s connection test, test the same location with another device, and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet. A stable local connection with no internet indicates a router or service problem; a weak result only at the TV points toward coverage, interference, or the TV’s wireless hardware.
The picture looks too dark, bright, or artificial
Return to the selected preset, disable automatic or intelligent processing temporarily, and change one control at a time while viewing familiar content. If only one HDMI source looks wrong, check that source’s output settings and the TV’s per-input picture mode.
Audio is delayed or silent
Confirm the output device and HDMI port, test TV speakers to isolate the soundbar or receiver, and choose only formats supported by the entire chain. Then consult the manuals for ARC/eARC, CEC, and audio-delay controls for the exact models involved.
You accepted a privacy choice too quickly
Look in Settings for Privacy, Account, Advertising, Voice, Diagnostics, or Viewing Information. Many TVs let you revise these choices after setup, although the names and available controls vary by software version and region. If a control is not present, use the model’s current privacy documentation rather than assuming a hidden master switch exists.
