How to set up a new smartwatch or fitness band and pair it with your phone

To set up a new smartwatch or fitness band, first confirm that your phone is compatible with the device family. Charge both devices, turn on Bluetooth, install the manufacturer’s companion app, and complete pairing inside that app rather than relying only on the phone’s Bluetooth menu. Keep the watch or band beside the phone, grant any requested permissions, sign in when prompted, and install available app or firmware updates before using health, notification, or fitness features.

The exact app and phone requirements differ by product family. Apple Watch uses Apple’s setup flow with an iPhone; Pixel Watch uses the Pixel Watch app with a compatible Android phone; other Wear OS watches generally use the Wear OS app; Samsung watches use Galaxy Wearable, while Galaxy Fit bands use the Galaxy Fit app.

What you need before pairing

Gather the phone you intend to use, the new watch or band, its charging cable or dock, and the correct companion app. Pairing succeeds only when the phone meets the model’s operating-system requirements and the app supports that device. A phone can have Bluetooth and still be incompatible with a particular watch.

Identify the device family

Read the model name on the box, setup card, back of the device, or charging screen. Do not choose an app solely because its name contains “watch” or “fitness.” The app is tied to the device family:

Device family Phone requirement stated by the platform Companion app or setup flow Important scope
Apple Watch iPhone Apple’s setup assistant on the iPhone and watch The Apple Watch setup flow is designed for iPhone; an Android phone is not the interchangeable equivalent.
Google Pixel Watch Compatible Android phone Pixel Watch app Bluetooth, location permission, current app, and current firmware are part of Google’s preparation guidance.
Other Wear OS watches Phone compatibility varies by model Wear OS app, unless the watch maker specifies another current app The watch maker’s instructions can replace the general Wear OS flow.
Samsung Galaxy Watch For Bluetooth models and Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 series, a compatible Android phone Galaxy Wearable Check the exact model because requirements differ across Samsung generations and connection types.
Samsung Galaxy Fit Phone compatibility varies by band and app version Galaxy Fit app Galaxy Fit uses a separate app from Samsung’s smartwatch setup.

Compatibility details can change as operating systems, apps, and firmware are updated. Check the support instructions for the exact model before opening the box, especially if you are using an older phone, a nonstandard Android build, or a cellular watch.

Charge both devices

Put the phone on charge if its battery is low and charge the watch or band on its supplied charger. A device that powers on but shuts down during an update can leave setup incomplete. For a Pixel Watch, Google also recommends attaching the band before powering on.

Prepare the phone

  • Turn on Bluetooth.
  • Install or update the companion app required by the device family.
  • Allow location access if the app requests it; Google’s Pixel Watch setup specifically calls for location permissions.
  • Install pending phone updates when practical, particularly if the manufacturer lists a minimum operating-system version.
  • Have the account credentials needed by the app available.

The standard app-based setup process

Use this sequence for most new watches and bands. Labels vary between phone versions, so follow the wording shown by the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Power on the wearable. Hold its power or side button until the logo or setup screen appears. If nothing appears, return it to the charger and wait until it has enough charge to start.
  2. Place it next to the phone. Keep the two devices within arm’s reach while pairing. Remove temporary distance, thick cases, or other conditions that could interrupt the Bluetooth exchange.
  3. Open the correct companion app. Start Apple’s setup assistant, the Pixel Watch app, the Wear OS app, Galaxy Wearable, or Galaxy Fit according to the device. Do not begin by treating the phone’s Bluetooth settings as the complete setup.
  4. Choose the add or set-up option. The app normally searches for nearby devices. Select the model name that matches the screen on your watch or band.
  5. Verify the pairing code. If a code or animation appears on both screens, confirm that they match and approve the request in the app. This prevents you from pairing with a nearby device that is not yours.
  6. Grant requested permissions. Notifications, contacts, calls, location, health data, and background operation may each have separate prompts. Read what a permission enables and allow only the features you intend to use.
  7. Sign in or create the required account. Some features, backups, stores, health records, or cloud synchronization depend on the manufacturer’s account. Keep the account associated with the phone you plan to use long term.
  8. Choose initial settings. Follow prompts for language, wrist orientation, units, notifications, health options, and privacy choices. If the app offers “set up as new,” select it for a new device unless you are intentionally restoring a previous watch.
  9. Install updates. Leave the wearable near the phone and on its charger if instructed. Update the companion app and the wearable firmware before judging whether a feature is missing or pairing is unreliable.
  10. Confirm the connection in the app. The app should show the watch or band as connected and expose its settings, battery level, or device dashboard. A name appearing only in the phone’s Bluetooth list is not proof that the manufacturer’s setup is complete.

Apple Watch with an iPhone

Apple’s setup flow pairs an Apple Watch with an iPhone through the setup assistants on both devices. Turn on the watch beside the iPhone, open the prompt that appears on the iPhone, and follow the pairing instructions. If the automatic prompt does not appear, open the Apple Watch setup app on the iPhone and start the add-watch flow shown there.

Choose new or restored setup

During setup, Apple presents an option to configure the watch as new or use an available backup. Choose the new-watch option when this is your first Apple Watch or when you do not want previous settings carried over. A restore can bring back familiar settings, but it may also recreate notification, health, or app choices you no longer want.

Finish the watch-specific choices

Apple’s assistant includes settings such as text size and health notifications. Read each screen rather than accepting every default, particularly for notification volume, health prompts, and privacy permissions. Keep the iPhone and watch close until the assistant reports completion and any update has finished.

Google Pixel Watch with an Android phone

A Pixel Watch requires a compatible Android phone and the Pixel Watch app. Before pairing, turn on Bluetooth, allow location access, update the Pixel Watch app, and make sure the watch firmware is current when the setup screen offers that check.

  1. Attach the band before powering on the watch, as Google recommends for Pixel Watch preparation.
  2. Place the watch beside the compatible Android phone with Bluetooth enabled.
  3. Open the Pixel Watch app and follow its device-selection and pairing prompts.
  4. Confirm the matching code or approval request shown by the app.
  5. Complete account, permissions, notification, and health setup.
  6. Leave both devices close together while the app checks for firmware and finishes synchronization.

The Pixel Watch app should report a successful connection. If the watch is visible in Android Bluetooth settings but the Pixel Watch app does not complete setup, return to the app’s pairing flow instead of assuming the device is ready.

Other Wear OS watches

Google’s general Wear OS guidance directs users to connect through the Wear OS app. Install that app, turn on Bluetooth, place the watch beside the phone, and use the in-app add-device process. The watch manufacturer may require a different current app, an additional plug-in, or a model-specific sequence, so its instructions take precedence when they conflict with the generic Wear OS flow.

When the generic Wear OS flow is not enough

  • The watch may be a model that has moved to a manufacturer-specific app.
  • The phone may meet Wear OS requirements but not the watch maker’s requirements.
  • A firmware update may be required before the watch can finish registration.
  • Some functions, such as calls or health measurements, may require extra permissions after basic pairing.

After the Wear OS app reports a connection, open the watch’s device page and complete any remaining manufacturer setup. Do not uninstall the app or reset the watch merely because an optional feature has not yet appeared; first check whether a plug-in, permission, or update is pending.

Samsung Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Fit

Galaxy Watch

Samsung directs smartwatch users to Galaxy Wearable. Bluetooth models and the Galaxy Watch4 and Watch5 series require a compatible Android phone and Galaxy Wearable. Open the app, select the option to add a device, choose the watch shown on screen, verify the pairing request, and follow the account, permissions, and update prompts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because Samsung’s requirements vary by model and connection type, check the exact watch documentation before assuming that an iPhone or a different Android phone will support every feature. A successful Bluetooth connection does not override a model’s operating-system requirement.

Galaxy Fit band

Galaxy Fit uses the Galaxy Fit app rather than the Galaxy Wearable smartwatch flow. Install the correct app, power on the band, keep it beside the phone, and start pairing from inside Galaxy Fit. Complete its permission and synchronization prompts before trying to configure notifications or activity tracking.

Permissions, accounts, and updates

Pairing is only the first stage. A watch can show the correct time while still lacking permissions needed for notifications, location-based workouts, contacts, calls, or health synchronization.

Review permissions by feature

  • Notifications: allow notification access if you want alerts mirrored from the phone.
  • Location: allow it when the app or a workout feature requires location services; Pixel Watch setup specifically identifies this permission.
  • Contacts and calls: allow access only if you want the watch to display contacts or handle calls.
  • Health data: review which measurements and apps may read or write health information.
  • Background operation: avoid restricting the companion app if the phone’s battery controls would otherwise stop synchronization.

Permission names and locations differ by phone software. If you deny a request and later need the feature, reopen the companion app’s device settings or the phone’s app-permission controls and change that individual setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep software current

Install updates offered by the companion app and the watch or band. Updates can be prerequisites for setup, fix connection problems, and add compatibility for newer phone software. Keep the devices charged and close together during firmware installation, and do not power either one off unless the app explicitly instructs you to do so.

Pairing problems: a recovery sequence

When setup stalls, work from the least disruptive checks to the most device-specific remedy. There is no single reset procedure that applies safely to every watch and band.

  1. Recheck compatibility. Confirm the exact model, phone operating system, and required app. A watch designed for iPhone cannot be made Android-compatible by repeating Bluetooth scans, and an Android-only model may not support an iPhone.
  2. Check power. Charge the phone and wearable. A low battery can interrupt discovery, pairing confirmation, or firmware installation.
  3. Confirm Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth on in the phone and leave it enabled while the app searches. If Bluetooth is already on, briefly turn it off and on again, then return to the companion app.
  4. Move the devices together. Keep the watch or band beside the phone. Remove unnecessary distance and wait for the app to rediscover it.
  5. Use the correct, current app. Verify that you installed Pixel Watch, Wear OS, Galaxy Wearable, Galaxy Fit, or Apple’s setup flow as appropriate. Update the app before trying again.
  6. Review permissions. Allow location when required by the platform, and revisit notification or nearby-device permissions if the app cannot find the wearable.
  7. Restart both devices. Use the normal restart commands, then reopen the companion app and repeat its add-device process.
  8. Remove a stale connection only when necessary. If the app shows an old or half-finished device entry, use the app’s own remove or forget option before pairing again. Do not delete unrelated Bluetooth devices.
  9. Follow model-specific support instructions. If the problem persists, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting page for that exact model. Reset steps, account locks, and recovery modes differ across Apple Watch, Pixel Watch, Wear OS, Galaxy Watch, and Galaxy Fit.

What not to do first

  • Do not repeatedly pair from the phone’s Bluetooth screen while the companion app is waiting; this can leave an incomplete app registration.
  • Do not factory-reset a watch before checking compatibility, power, Bluetooth, proximity, app version, and permissions.
  • Do not assume that a successful pairing code means firmware, health, or notification setup has finished.

Moving the wearable to another phone

A watch or band is normally associated with one primary phone at a time. Before moving it, check the companion app for a transfer, backup, remove-device, or reset option. The correct sequence depends on the model and account system; a reset that is appropriate for one family may erase data or trigger account protection on another. Back up any data the app allows you to preserve, then follow the exact model’s transfer instructions.

How to choose a compatible watch or band before buying

If you have not purchased the device yet, evaluate setup compatibility before comparing colors, sensors, or battery claims. The most useful comparison questions are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Question Why it matters How to verify
Does it support my phone and operating system? An incompatible phone cannot complete the official setup flow. Check the exact model’s requirements, not only the product family name.
Which companion app is required? The app handles pairing, updates, permissions, and device settings. Install the app named in the manufacturer’s instructions and confirm that your phone can run it.
Will the setup support the features I need? Basic Bluetooth pairing may not provide calls, notifications, health sync, or location features. Check feature-specific phone, account, permission, and regional requirements.
Can I move it to another phone later? Some transfers require a backup or reset and may remove locally stored data. Read the model’s transfer or replacement-phone instructions before purchase.

Do not rank a watch or band by price or performance alone when the phone cannot support its setup app. Compatibility and the intended feature set determine whether the device will be useful.

Setup checklist

  • Identify the exact watch or band model.
  • Confirm the phone and operating-system requirement.
  • Install the required companion app.
  • Charge the phone and wearable.
  • Attach the band when the manufacturer recommends doing so before power-on.
  • Turn on Bluetooth.
  • Enable location or other required permissions.
  • Pair from inside the companion app.
  • Verify the code or approval request.
  • Complete account, notification, health, and privacy choices.
  • Install app and firmware updates.
  • Confirm that the app reports the wearable as connected.

App names, firmware requirements, and compatibility can change. The manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact model remain the authority when they differ from this general sequence.
