How to Set Up a New Smart TV and Secure Its Privacy Settings

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

A new smart TV is ready for safer use when you complete its setup on a trusted network, install updates, and treat every privacy prompt as a separate decision. Turn off optional viewing recognition, voice collection, location access, and personalized advertising where your model allows it—but do not assume one switch stops every form of data collection or every advertisement. Menus and available controls vary by brand, model, operating-system version, accepted agreements, and region.

What to do before connecting the TV

Unpack and assemble the television according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Keep the model number and the operating-system name handy; privacy controls are often different even between two sets from the same brand. If the TV has a removable microphone switch, camera shutter, or microphone-mute button, note its physical position before beginning setup.

Use a trusted home Wi-Fi network protected with WPA2 or WPA3 and a strong, unique password. Ethernet is an option when the set is near your router. Avoid completing account setup on an open public hotspot. A TV with optional tracking disabled is not automatically private: network traffic, apps, diagnostics, and account activity can still be processed by the platform or service providers.

Decide which services you actually intend to use. Signing in can enable app downloads, purchases, watch-history synchronization, voice assistants, recommendations, and other platform features. Do not assume sign-in is always optional or always required; the answer depends on the manufacturer, software version, region, and the services you select.

How to set up a new smart TV

  1. Connect power and external equipment. Attach the stand or wall mount, connect the power cable, and plug in devices such as a game console, antenna, sound system, or set-top box. Keep a note of which device uses each HDMI input; this matters when reviewing automatic content-recognition settings later.
  2. Choose language, country, and region. These choices affect available apps, legal notices, content services, privacy wording, and sometimes which controls appear. Select the place where the TV is actually used rather than a region chosen to unlock unrelated services.
  3. Join your home network. Select your Wi-Fi name and enter its password, or choose Ethernet if connected. Confirm that the TV reports a successful internet connection before continuing. If the network is not listed, check that the router’s wireless band is supported, move the TV closer temporarily, or use Ethernet for setup.
  4. Choose phone-assisted or remote setup when offered. Google TV supports setup with a phone or manually with the remote. The phone route can speed up password entry and account sign-in; manual setup avoids transferring credentials from another device. Google notes that requirements, charges, regional terms, and supported features differ by device, manufacturer, and region.
  5. Read each privacy notice and agreement. Do not treat a single “accept all” screen as the only choice. Look for separate decisions about viewing information or Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), personalized advertising, voice recognition, location, diagnostics, analytics, and app permissions. If the screen offers “more,” “manage,” or “customize” controls, open them before accepting.
  6. Sign in only where it serves a purpose. Use the platform account required for the apps or purchases you want. Skip optional services that you will not use. On a shared TV, consider a separate household account rather than exposing a personal account used for unrelated services.
  7. Install system updates. Updates can repair security defects, change privacy controls, and add or remove features. On Google TV, the documented path is Settings > System > About > System update > Check for update. Other platforms use different paths, so follow the support instructions for the exact model instead of copying this route.
  8. Recheck privacy settings after setup. Some choices made during the welcome flow are duplicated in the settings menu. Open those menus, confirm that optional features remain off, and review them again after a major software update or factory reset.
  9. Configure the basics. Set the correct time zone, pair the remote, scan for antenna channels if applicable, and choose picture and sound preferences. These steps do not replace privacy review, but they reduce the chance that you will later accept a rushed prompt simply to make a device work.

How to stop a smart TV from tracking what you watch

“Tracking” is not one universal feature. ACR, app-level analytics, account watch history, advertising identifiers, diagnostics, and network logs are separate categories. Start with ACR or viewing-information controls, then review voice, location, advertising, and account settings individually.

What ACR does

Automatic Content Recognition can analyze what appears on the television and associate that information with identifiers or an account. Depending on the implementation, it may recognize programs and commercials received through the built-in tuner and through HDMI-connected devices. That means a console, disc player, or cable box can be within the feature’s scope even when the content did not come from the TV’s own streaming apps.

ACR is not a complete inventory of everything a platform or an app can collect. Disabling it does not automatically delete app watch histories, diagnostic records, account data, or information already sent while the feature was enabled.

Samsung televisions

Samsung describes its viewing-information service and ACR as optional. The feature operates when the user opted in during setup or enabled it later. Samsung’s description includes viewing history, identifiers, and IP address among the information involved. Use the television’s current privacy or terms-and-conditions menus to withdraw or change the choice; the exact label and path can differ by model, software, accepted agreements, and market.

After changing the setting, look for separate controls for voice recognition, personalized advertising, and diagnostics. Turning off viewing information does not necessarily change those other categories.

Roku televisions

Roku documents the path Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience for withdrawing consent to its ACR feature. Roku says this recognition can include programs and commercials viewed through an antenna and HDMI-connected devices. Its documentation also warns that information collected before the feature was disabled may be retained and could still be shared for the purposes described in its notice.

Therefore, disabling ACR is a forward-looking control, not a promise that historical records are erased. Check the Roku account separately for voice-recording retention and other account-level choices.

LG televisions

LG says the operation and sharing of ACR-related viewing information depend on the market, agreements accepted during setup, and the user’s selections. LG provides a way to disable ACR in TV settings, but it does not publish one menu path that applies to every model and region. Open the current privacy, viewing-information, or advertising menus on your set and confirm the model-specific instructions.

Legal opt-out rights also vary by jurisdiction. A control shown on one LG television may be absent, renamed, or presented under a different agreement on another.

Google TV televisions

Google’s setup and privacy controls separate several types of data. Review viewing activity, installed apps, app interactions, diagnostics, analytics, personalization, and location independently. Google’s documentation does not make one universal “stop tracking” switch available for all of these categories. Use the options shown on the TV and in the relevant account pages, and read the explanation beside each toggle.

Voice assistants and microphones

Voice privacy is separate from ACR. A television may have a microphone in the remote, a far-field microphone in the set, or both. Review the assistant’s listening switch, voice-recognition data collection, and any account setting that stores recordings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung says voice-recognition data collection can be disabled in settings, although some voice features may stop working afterward. Roku separately provides account-level controls for retaining voice recordings. A microphone mute button can prevent listening through that hardware, but it does not necessarily alter recordings or interactions already stored in an account.

  • Turn off wake-word listening if you do not use the assistant.
  • Disable voice-recognition data collection where the TV offers that choice.
  • Check the account linked to the assistant for recording history and retention controls.
  • Remove microphone permission from apps that do not need voice input.
  • After changing a setting, test the assistant to understand which feature was lost and whether the physical microphone indicator changes.

Advertising IDs and personalized ads

On Google TV, the documented route is Settings > Privacy > Ads. From there, you can reset or delete the advertising ID. Google TV Help states: “You can’t turn off ads, but you can control the use of your advertising ID for personalized ads across installed apps.”

Deleting the advertising ID stops ads based on that identifier, but it does not remove advertising from apps. Google says apps may continue showing ads and may personalize them using other information shared with those apps. Resetting an identifier also creates a new identifier for future use; it is not the same as deleting every account record or app history.

Other platforms use different names, such as personalized advertising, interest-based ads, or advertising measurement. Disable those choices where available, then open each major streaming app’s privacy settings. App-level settings can continue to apply even when a TV-wide advertising control is off.

Location, diagnostics, and platform data

Google says Google TV can collect information for service functions including watch activity, approximate location, identifiers, app interactions, installed apps, diagnostics, analytics, and personalization. Its location control is Settings > Privacy > Location.

When location is off, apps with permission do not receive location through that setting. However, Google and third parties may still estimate a general location from the TV’s IP address. Disabling location therefore limits one source of location access; it does not make the network connection geographically anonymous.

Review diagnostics and analytics separately. Crash reports can help a manufacturer repair faults, while analytics and personalization can support product improvement or recommendations. If the TV offers basic and full diagnostic choices, select the narrower option unless you specifically want to share additional data.

Secure the TV’s accounts and network

  • Use a unique platform password. Do not reuse the password for email, banking, or your router.
  • Enable two-step verification where offered. This protects the account even if the TV itself has no second-factor prompt.
  • Review signed-in devices. Remove old televisions, phones, or browsers from the account after selling or returning a device.
  • Use a guest or IoT network when practical. A separate network can limit what the TV can reach if another device on the home network is compromised. Configure it so the TV can still reach required streaming and casting services.
  • Change the router’s default administrator password. Keep router firmware current and use WPA2 or WPA3 rather than an open network.
  • Install updates through the manufacturer’s normal process. Do not sideload unofficial firmware or “privacy” applications that require unknown permissions.
  • Limit unused connections. Disable Bluetooth pairing, casting, or remote-access functions you do not use, if the model provides those switches.

  • The TV is connected to your secured home network, not a public hotspot.
  • The exact model and operating-system version are recorded.
  • System software reports no pending update, or an update is scheduled.
  • ACR, viewing-information, or Smart TV Experience consent matches your choice.
  • Voice recognition and microphone permissions match the features you intend to use.
  • Personalized advertising and the advertising-ID setting have been reviewed.
  • Location access is off or limited to the apps that need it.
  • Diagnostics, analytics, and personalization are set to the least permissive useful option.
  • Streaming apps have been checked individually for watch-history, voice, advertising, and location controls.
  • Your platform account uses a unique password and two-step verification where available.

Common problems and how to fix them

The TV cannot connect to Wi-Fi

Confirm the password, restart the router and TV, and check whether another device can reach the internet. If the router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks under one name, temporarily connect the TV to the band it supports best. Use Ethernet to finish updates and account setup if Wi-Fi remains unreliable, then revisit wireless settings later.

A privacy option is missing

Look for a related term such as viewing information, Smart TV Experience, content recognition, interest-based advertising, voice data, or diagnostics. The option may depend on the country selected, an agreement accepted earlier, the installed software version, or whether the TV is in retail mode. Search the exact model’s support documentation before assuming the feature cannot be changed.

The setting turned back on after an update

Read the update’s privacy notice and repeat the review. Some updates introduce a new agreement or reset a choice after a factory reset. Record the date and software version so you can describe the change accurately to the manufacturer’s support team.

Ads are still appearing

That is expected when only an advertising ID or personalization switch was changed. Apps can continue to display ads, and they may use information shared with them for personalization. Review the individual app’s settings and accept that a TV-wide control cannot guarantee an ad-free interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You want to remove previously collected data

Disabling a feature does not always erase information collected while it was active. Roku explicitly warns that data gathered before ACR was disabled may be retained and could still be shared for the purposes described in its notice. Use the platform’s account privacy or data-request tools where available, and check each app separately; do not promise that one TV toggle deletes historical records.

You are selling, returning, or giving away the TV

Sign out of every account, remove payment information, unpair Bluetooth remotes and accessories, and perform the model’s factory reset. Confirm on the first-run screen that personal profiles and installed apps are gone. Also remove the television from account device lists and change passwords if you cannot verify that the reset completed.

How to keep the settings useful over time

Privacy menus are software features, not permanent hardware switches. Recheck them after operating-system updates, a change of country or account, a factory reset, or the installation of a new voice or streaming app. Keep the model number and software version in your notes so a support article can be matched to the correct device.

Use the narrowest setting that still provides the feature you want. For example, you might retain voice control but disable voice-recording retention, or keep crash reports while declining personalized advertising. The best configuration is the one you can explain: which data category is enabled, which service receives it, what functionality depends on it, and how to turn it off later.

The FTC-hosted connected-TV paper is historical research context, not a current universal statistic for every television. Treat the model’s current privacy notice and settings as the authoritative description of what that particular set and its installed apps do.
