The reliable way to set up a smart TV is to map its ports first, connect every source to a compatible HDMI input, then configure audio and control separately. Use the TV’s labelled ARC/eARC port for a compatible soundbar, select the correct input when you use a console or player, and keep the exact manual for your model nearby because menus and supported features vary by brand, operating system and region.
Start with a port map, not a cable pile
Turn the television around and photograph or write down every label before connecting anything. Inputs receive a signal from another device; outputs send a signal away from the TV. LG’s guide summarizes the distinction as, "In and Out mean very different things." Read the complete guide for your model at LG USA Support or in the manual supplied with the set.

Look for HDMI inputs numbered HDMI 1, HDMI 2 and so on, plus any labels such as ARC or eARC. Also identify the antenna input, optical digital-audio output, USB ports and network connections. A port’s shape alone does not tell you which features it supports: one HDMI input may be the only ARC/eARC port, and video, audio-return and control capabilities can differ between ports.
Make a quick connection inventory
- List each source: game console, cable or satellite box, Blu-ray player, streaming player, computer or receiver.
- Record the device’s available outputs and the cable you intend to use.
- Reserve the TV HDMI port labelled ARC/eARC for the soundbar or AV receiver if you plan to use TV audio apps through it.
- Check both manuals for supported resolutions, HDR, refresh rates and audio formats before assuming that a port or cable supports a particular feature.
- Keep power adapters accessible so you can restart devices without dismantling the installation.
Do not connect a device to a socket labelled HDMI OUT on the TV or on another source. An output cannot receive the console or player’s picture. If a receiver sits between a source and the TV, confirm which of its HDMI sockets are inputs and which is its TV output.

Connect consoles, players and boxes to the TV
For most source devices, HDMI is the simplest connection because one cable carries digital video and audio. Use any compatible, free TV HDMI input that is not reserved for ARC/eARC. The port number does not inherently make a console faster; compatibility with the TV’s supported video modes is what matters.
- Turn off the TV and the source device if the manuals recommend powering down before cabling.
- Insert one end of the HDMI cable into the device’s HDMI OUT socket.
- Insert the other end into the selected TV HDMI IN socket, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. Push both plugs fully home without forcing them.
- Write the device name next to the port number. A phone note such as “Console—HDMI 2” prevents guesswork later.
- Reconnect power and turn on the TV and source. Use the TV remote’s Input, Source or similar button and choose the recorded HDMI number.
Repeat the procedure for a Blu-ray player, cable or satellite box, or another streaming device. When all HDMI inputs are occupied, consult the manuals for a compatible switch, receiver or alternative connection rather than plugging two sources into one port.
What the common labels mean
| Label or socket | Typical purpose | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI IN | Receives picture and sound from a console, player, box or computer | Supported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and copy-protection requirements |
| HDMI ARC | Sends TV audio back to a compatible soundbar or receiver over HDMI | Both devices must support ARC; enable the TV’s external-audio and control settings when required |
| HDMI eARC | Enhanced audio-return connection related to ARC | Check both manuals for supported audio formats and whether the soundbar or receiver is eARC-compatible |
| Optical digital audio | One-way digital audio output to compatible equipment | Both devices need optical ports; HDMI-dependent power and volume features may be unavailable |
| Antenna/RF | Receives over-the-air broadcast signals | Use an HDTV antenna and run the TV’s channel scan |
| USB | May play media or supply limited power, depending on the TV | Read the model manual; USB is not a universal video input for every device |
Switch to the right input when you use a device
A connected device can be working while the TV shows a blank screen simply because the TV is still on another input. Press Input, Source or the equivalent key, then select the exact HDMI label used during installation. Some TVs let you rename an input to Console, Blu-ray or Cable; use that option if available so the on-screen list matches your notes.

If the source is powered but the TV reports no signal, confirm that you chose the same HDMI number written down, then reseat the cable at both ends. Try another compatible TV input only after checking the manuals, because moving a source can change which video modes or ARC functions are available. If a receiver is in the path, test the source directly on the TV to determine whether the receiver is causing the interruption.
Connect a soundbar through HDMI ARC or eARC
HDMI ARC/eARC is usually the most useful single-cable arrangement when both products support it. It lets the TV send audio from built-in streaming apps and connected sources back to the soundbar. Samsung’s instructions are at Samsung Canada Support; the page notes that regional instructions can differ, so match its steps to your model.
- Check the labels on both products. The TV socket must say HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, and the soundbar socket normally says HDMI OUT (TV-ARC), HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. Do not use an ordinary soundbar HDMI input for the TV-return connection.
- Connect the TV’s labelled ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s corresponding TV ARC/eARC port. A cable that is firmly seated at both ends is essential.
- Turn on the soundbar and select its TV, ARC or eARC source if it does not switch automatically.
- Open the TV’s sound settings and choose External Speaker, Receiver, HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, using the wording shown by that TV. Samsung explains that the TV audio output must be set to the external speaker for soundbar playback.
- Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC in the TV settings when the model requires those switches. CEC may have a brand-specific name, and ARC can remain silent if the control setting is disabled.
- Play a TV app and then an HDMI source to verify that both kinds of audio reach the soundbar. Adjust volume with the TV remote only after confirming that CEC control is active.
ARC and eARC are return channels, not guarantees of every possible format. The TV and soundbar must both support the desired format, and the signal path must be compatible end to end. Read the two manuals before selecting a surround or high-bandwidth audio option.

ARC/eARC versus optical audio
| Question | HDMI ARC/eARC | Optical |
|---|---|---|
| TV-app audio return | Designed to send compatible TV audio to the soundbar over HDMI | Works only when the TV and soundbar both provide compatible optical connections and settings |
| Single-cable video and audio ecosystem | Uses HDMI and can coexist with HDMI source switching | Audio is separate from HDMI video connections |
| Shared power or volume control | May work through HDMI-CEC on compatible equipment | Sony notes that an optical-only hookup does not provide HDMI-dependent power interlock and TV-remote volume control; see Sony USA Support |
| Format support | Depends on the ARC/eARC generation and both devices’ specifications | Depends on the optical capabilities of the TV and soundbar |
| Best use | Preferred when both devices have matching labelled ARC/eARC ports and you want TV audio plus possible CEC control | Fallback when ARC/eARC is unavailable and the equipment supports optical audio |
Do not infer format support from the words ARC or eARC alone. Verify the exact model specifications. Samsung recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for the setup described on its support page. Cable requirements, included cables and supported features vary, so an expensive cable is not automatically necessary.

HDMI-CEC is a control protocol that lets compatible devices share commands over the same HDMI link used for audio and video. Roku describes it as allowing commands to be shared between devices over that connection. Depending on the equipment, CEC can coordinate power, input selection and volume.
Manufacturers use different names and menu locations. Roku lists Samsung Anynet+, LG SIMPLINK and Sony BRAVIA Sync as examples in its guide at Roku Support. On your TV, search Settings for HDMI-CEC, device link, control for HDMI or the brand’s equivalent. Enable the corresponding control option on the soundbar, receiver or source device too, if its manual requires it.

CEC is optional. A console may display video and play sound even when CEC is off, but shared power or volume commands will not work. Devices from different manufacturers can implement different subsets of CEC, so enable only the controls you need and keep the individual remotes available during testing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Add an antenna only if you want local broadcast channels
An internet connection and an antenna serve different purposes. To watch free over-the-air local broadcasts, connect an HDTV antenna to the TV’s antenna/RF input, select the TV or Live TV source, and run the channel scan in the television’s broadcast or channel settings. Roku’s device guidance explains the antenna path at Roku Support.
Scanning does not improve streaming-app availability, and an antenna is not required for a TV used solely with internet apps or HDMI devices. Reception depends on location, antenna placement and local broadcasts; follow the antenna and TV manuals for the scan options shown in your region.

Finish the TV’s first-run software setup carefully
Initial Wi-Fi login, account creation, privacy choices, automatic updates and channel scans are not standardized across all smart-TV brands or models. Use the exact quick-start guide and on-screen prompts for your set. Keep the TV connected to power while it installs required firmware, and do not unplug it during an update.
After the first-run wizard, open the TV’s network, system and audio menus once so you know where settings live. Note the software version and the names used for Input, External Speaker, ARC/eARC and CEC. Those labels make later troubleshooting much faster, especially after a factory reset or firmware update.
Use this fault-isolation sequence when something fails
No picture from a console, player or box
- Confirm the device is powered on and its HDMI cable is in HDMI OUT on the device and HDMI IN on the TV.
- Select the TV input number that matches your written port map.
- Reseat both HDMI plugs and inspect the cable for damage.
- Try the source directly on another compatible TV input, then test another known-good cable if available.
- If a receiver or switch is involved, bypass it temporarily. A direct connection separates a TV problem from an intervening-device problem.
- Check the device and TV manuals for a resolution, refresh-rate or copy-protection mismatch.
No sound from the soundbar
- Verify that the HDMI cable runs from the TV socket labelled ARC/eARC to the soundbar’s matching TV ARC/eARC socket.
- Set the TV audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC, External Speaker or the equivalent option rather than TV Speaker.
- Enable ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC where the manuals require them.
- Make sure the soundbar is on its TV/ARC/eARC source and is not muted.
- Reseat the cable, then power off both units. Roku recommends unplugging devices and reconnecting them in sequence; follow the model manuals for the order.
- Check for firmware updates on the TV and soundbar, and test a built-in TV app as well as an HDMI source.
If ARC still fails, consult both manuals for a supported optical connection. Optical can restore audio on compatible equipment, but the HDMI-dependent power and TV-remote volume functions described by Sony will not be available through an optical-only link.

Picture works but audio is silent
This symptom often means the video path is correct while the TV is sending sound to the wrong destination. Recheck External Speaker or HDMI ARC/eARC selection, the soundbar’s selected input and the TV’s digital-audio format setting. Do not assume that changing a source HDMI port will fix an audio-output selection. Sony’s soundbar instructions and Samsung’s ARC guide explain why the TV audio destination must match the physical connection.
CEC power or volume control does not work
- Confirm that CEC is enabled on the TV and on each compatible HDMI device.
- Check that the cable is fully seated and that the device actually supports the requested command.
- Look for the manufacturer’s alternate CEC name in Settings; menu labels vary.
- Restart the TV and HDMI device, then test power and volume again.
- Use the device’s own remote if it supports no CEC functions or if another device is issuing conflicting commands.
Run a final acceptance check
- Every source has a documented TV port and produces a picture on the matching input.
- The soundbar receives audio from a built-in TV app and at least one HDMI source.
- The TV remote changes volume or power only if the connected devices support and have enabled CEC.
- The antenna scan is complete if local broadcast channels are part of your setup.
- Cables are not under tension, vents remain clear and each device can be unplugged without removing the TV.
- You have saved the model manuals and noted the exact menu names for Input, audio output, ARC/eARC and CEC.
Once those checks pass, label the cables or ports permanently and keep the port map with the TV remote. Future changes then become a documented input selection rather than trial and error.
