How to Set Up a New Smart TV and Connect It to Wi-Fi

To connect a new smart TV, turn it on, follow its first-time setup prompts, select your home Wi-Fi network, and enter the network password. Have the network name and password ready; the exact screens and optional phone, account, or privacy prompts depend on the TV’s brand and model.

Before you start

  • Place the TV where you plan to use it and connect it to power.
  • Keep the TV remote nearby. Pair it if the screen prompts you to do so.
  • Find your Wi-Fi network name (also called its SSID) and password. Roku lists both as setup requirements, and its guidance notes that the password is case-sensitive.
  • If the TV offers phone-based setup, have your phone available. Google TV supports setup with a phone or manually with the remote; Samsung’s SmartThings setup is available only on certain models.

Complete the TV’s first-time setup

Turn on the TV and follow the on-screen instructions. Choose a language and, if requested, a country or region. The sequence varies: some Sony setup flows include a privacy choice and a Network Setup screen; Samsung’s Canada guide describes remote pairing and language selection before SmartThings or network setup; Roku asks for language and country or use mode; and Google TV offers phone-based or manual setup.

Use the TV’s own prompts rather than looking for one universal menu path. If the screens differ from these examples, consult the manual or support page for the exact model. Sony’s first-time setup instructions apply to certain products and operating systems, and Samsung’s cited guide covers TVs sold in Canada; settings may differ in other regions.

Connect the TV to Wi-Fi

  1. At the network step, choose Wi-Fi or Wireless.
  2. Select your home network from the list.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi password carefully, including its capitalization and any special characters.
  4. Continue and check the screen for a connection confirmation or status.

If your network is not listed, use Scan again or the equivalent option if available. If the password is rejected, confirm that you selected the correct network and re-enter the password before changing router settings.

Finish the remaining setup prompts

After connecting, the TV may offer software updates, privacy or terms choices, an account sign-in, clock settings, broadcast-channel setup, or app configuration. These prompts vary by model; not every TV shows all of them, and an account is not necessarily required for every function.

For example, Sony says that on the applicable products covered by its instructions, enabling Smart TV is needed to use apps and receive software updates. Its setup flow also allows you to skip network setup and return to it later. Samsung says some services and apps require a Samsung account, while its Canadian guide says accepting Smart Hub terms and privacy consent is needed for apps and some smart features. Read each screen to understand what a choice enables before proceeding.

If the TV will not connect

  • Network missing: Scan again if the option is shown. If it remains unavailable, check the model’s support information for network requirements.
  • Password rejected: Verify the network name, capitalization, and password characters. Roku’s setup guidance specifies that its Wi-Fi password is case-sensitive.
  • Google TV compatibility issue: Google says WPA2-Enterprise is unsupported in the described Google TV setup. It also says certain Google TV devices require a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. These are specific compatibility notes, not rules that apply to every smart TV.
  • Still stuck: Check the exact model’s help page or manual, since network options and requirements vary by device.

Can you use Ethernet instead?

Yes, if your TV has an Ethernet port and you prefer a wired connection. Connect an Ethernet cable between the TV and router, then choose Wired when the TV offers that option. Samsung’s Canadian guide documents this choice, and Roku also describes Ethernet for supported devices; some Roku players require a USB Ethernet adapter. Check the exact model’s ports and compatibility before buying a cable or adapter. Ethernet is an alternative to Wi-Fi, not a requirement for Wi-Fi setup.

What varies by TV

The operating system and model determine whether setup can be completed with the remote alone or optionally uses a phone or app, which network choices appear, and whether an account is needed for the services you want. Region and device-specific network requirements can also affect the screens or available options. The manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model are the best guide when its setup flow differs.
