How to set up a new Samsung Galaxy phone: essential settings and privacy checks

Set up a new Galaxy by completing the first-run wizard, choosing whether to move data with Smart Switch, creating a strong screen lock, and then auditing permissions, updates, Auto Blocker and optional protection features. Menu names and available options differ by model, carrier, region and One UI version, so use the Settings search field if a path does not match your screen.

The safest approach is to finish the basics first, verify that your important data and accounts work, and only then erase the old phone or add stricter security controls. Samsung’s Galaxy A37 5G setup guide illustrates the general sequence, but it is an example rather than a universal map for every Galaxy.

Before you start

Have the old phone, its charging cable or wireless connection, your Google and Samsung account details, and the Wi-Fi password available. Charge both phones if you are transferring a large amount of data. Keep the old device until you have verified that contacts, photos, messages and authenticator apps are usable on the new one.

  • Install any pending update on the old phone if Smart Switch requests it.
  • Know the password or PIN for the old phone; transfer tools may require you to unlock it repeatedly.
  • If the phone belongs to an employer or school, check whether its work profile or management policy limits setup choices.
  • Make sure you can receive sign-in codes. A number moved to an eSIM, a banking verification method or an authenticator app can create a problem if the old phone is wiped too soon.
  • Decide whether you want a clean start. A transfer is convenient, but manual setup can avoid bringing across old apps, clutter or settings you no longer need.

Use a trusted Wi-Fi network for setup and updates. A public network can be inconvenient for account sign-ins and a large transfer, while cellular data charges may apply if the carrier permits setup over mobile data.

How do I set up a new Samsung Galaxy phone?

1. Start the setup wizard

  1. Turn on the Galaxy and choose a language.
  2. Read and accept the displayed terms and notices.
  3. Connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network. Cellular setup may also appear, depending on the carrier and model.
  4. Sign in to, or create, a Samsung account and a Google account when prompted. You can defer some sign-ins, but many backup, app-store and device-finding functions depend on them.
  5. Complete the lock-screen prompt before leaving the wizard. The exact screens shown in Samsung’s setup example for the Galaxy A37 5G are not proof that every Galaxy uses identical wording or order.

The wizard may also ask about restoring a backup, enabling device-finding features, accepting Google services and choosing basic preferences. Read each screen rather than accepting every optional service automatically. You can usually revisit many choices in Settings, but some transfer decisions are easiest to make while both phones are available.

Let the wizard finish its update and restore checks before judging battery life or storage use. Background app installation and account synchronization can continue for some time after the home screen appears. A phone that feels warm or uses storage rapidly during the first hours may simply be completing those tasks.

2. Choose transfer or a clean start

The wizard normally offers Smart Switch transfer from another Galaxy or Android phone, transfer from an iPhone or iPad, or manual setup. Select the route that matches your goal:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Choice Best for What to expect
Smart Switch Moving an established phone to the new Galaxy Guided selection of data and settings; prompts vary by source phone and connection method.
Manual setup A clean start, a second phone or a device with little data You install apps, sign in and copy files yourself; nothing is automatically assumed to be transferable.

With the Smart Switch route, follow the on-screen instructions. Samsung’s documented example has the new phone display a QR code that the old device scans, after which both phones show prompts for selecting and moving content. Cable, wireless, Android, iPhone and iPad transfers can present different permissions and choices, so do not assume that an option shown in one method will appear in another.

Read the selection screen carefully. You may be able to choose categories rather than moving everything, which is useful when the new phone has less free storage or you want to leave behind old downloads. A transfer is not the same as a complete clone: account sign-ins, some app data, protected media and device-specific settings can still require separate action.

If the old device is an iPhone or iPad, follow the method offered for that source rather than trying to force an Android-to-Android path. If the old phone is unavailable, manual setup is the realistic option; sign in to your accounts and restore from services that support it.

3. Verify the transfer before wiping the old phone

Open the contacts, gallery, messages and calendar apps on the new Galaxy. Test calls, two-factor authentication, banking apps and any password manager. Some accounts, app data, DRM-protected media and iOS-specific content may require a separate sign-in or export. Only reset or trade in the old phone after this check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check alarms, Bluetooth pairings, downloaded maps, notes and files stored outside the standard photo or document folders. Try opening several recent photos and videos, not just checking that thumbnails exist. Confirm that your chosen backup service is syncing on the new phone and that you know where to find recovery information for important accounts.

Choose a screen lock that protects the phone

A screen lock is the basic barrier against someone using an unattended or lost phone. Samsung documents PIN, password and pattern choices, with fingerprint and face unlocking available on supported devices.

Method Strength and convenience Important consideration
PIN Fast and practical; use a longer, non-obvious PIN rather than a date or repeated digits. You must remember it; the phone may require it after a restart or security event.
Password Can provide more combinations than a short PIN. Slower to enter, especially when wearing gloves or while driving.
Pattern Quick visual entry. Finger trails and predictable shapes can reveal it; choose a complex pattern if you use one.
Fingerprint Convenient biometric unlock where the hardware and software support it. Keep a PIN, password or pattern as the fallback; recognition can fail with wet fingers, gloves or a changed sensor position.
Face Hands-free convenience on supported models. Availability and security characteristics vary by device; do not treat it as universally equivalent to a password.

These are user choices, not a Samsung-mandated configuration. A sensible setup is a strong primary code plus biometrics for convenience, with automatic locking after a short idle period. Review the lock and automatic-lock controls under the phone’s Lock screen settings; Samsung also documents controls involving the side button. Exact labels vary by model and software version.

After a restart or certain security events, the Galaxy can require that code before fingerprint or face unlocking works again.

Run the essential Security and privacy checks

Open Settings > Security and privacy. This area groups several checks, although the items shown can differ by Galaxy model, carrier, region and software release.

Audit app permissions

  1. Tap Permission manager.
  2. Review sensitive categories, starting with Camera and Microphone, then location, contacts, files and photos.
  3. Open each app that has access and choose the narrowest option that still supports its purpose, such as “Allow only while using the app” where offered.
  4. Remove access from apps that no longer need it. Revisit permissions after installing a new app or an update.

Look for apps that have access despite never using the related function. A weather app may need location for local forecasts, for example, but an app that never records audio should not need microphone access. Review full access as well as one-time or while-in-use choices, because the most restrictive option may be different for each category.

If an app stops working after a permission change, restore only the permission it genuinely needs and check whether an in-app feature can work with a less expansive choice. Do not grant camera, microphone, contacts or file access just because an app requests it at launch.

Check account and device security

Use the same page to inspect available account-security notices, lost-device controls, app-security information, and software or security updates. Google Play Protect checks installed apps for harmful behavior; leave its protections enabled unless you have a specific, well-understood reason to change them. Run an update check, install offered patches, and restart if the phone requests it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review notices for both the Samsung and Google accounts. Confirm that the account shown is yours, that recovery details are current, and that lost-device tools are associated with the account you intend to use. These checks are especially important after a transfer because an old account can remain signed in while the new phone appears to be working normally.

Because Samsung changes menu organization, use the Settings search field for terms such as “permission manager,” “Play Protect,” “software update,” “lost device” or “Security and privacy” when a documented path is missing. Search is also useful when a carrier build places a control under a different heading.

Configure Auto Blocker without breaking your workflow

Samsung support recommends keeping Auto Blocker enabled on a Galaxy device. Find it from Settings > Security and privacy > Auto Blocker when the feature is present.

Standard Auto Blocker

The regular setting adds protection against certain untrusted app installation and command paths. It is the appropriate default for most owners who install apps through ordinary, trusted channels. Keeping it enabled reduces the chance that an accidental file, cable connection or untrusted source can bypass the phone’s normal safeguards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maximum restrictions

Some phones offer a stricter mode called Maximum restrictions. It can interfere with compatibility or connectivity, including blocking 2G networks. Before enabling it, consider:

  • Whether you sideload legitimate apps for work, accessibility or development.
  • Whether accessories, vehicle systems or enterprise tools depend on a connection the stricter mode may restrict.
  • Whether your work profile has its own security requirements.
  • Whether you travel in areas where older cellular networks are still needed for coverage.

Maximum restrictions is therefore a choice about your whole workflow, not simply a higher score on a security scale. Someone who never sideloads apps and stays on modern networks may accept the trade-off, while a developer, traveler or managed-work user may need the standard setting.

Enable the stricter option only when its additional controls fit your devices, apps and travel needs. If a previously working app or accessory fails immediately afterward, return to the Auto Blocker settings, test the standard mode, and then contact the app or accessory provider if the problem remains.

Protect data during Smart Switch transfers

If Smart Switch uses external storage, open its settings before starting and review the permissions it requests and its privacy notice. Samsung documents protection options for external-storage transfers, including password or account-related safeguards. These controls are specific to the transfer method; a wireless phone-to-phone move will not necessarily show the same options.

  • Use storage that you control and remove it from the phone when the transfer is complete.
  • Do not leave an unprotected transfer copy on a shared computer or removable drive.
  • After migration, check that the copied files open correctly before deleting the source.
  • Keep a transfer drive private while it contains messages, photos, contacts or account-related files.

Do not assume that a privacy notice or password option shown for an external-storage workflow applies to every Smart Switch connection. Read the controls presented by your chosen method and use the strongest practical protection for the copy you create.

Optional protection features worth considering

Secure Folder

On supported Galaxy devices, Secure Folder creates a separately protected space for selected apps and files. It is useful for documents, photos or accounts that should not appear in the ordinary app and gallery views. Availability and the exact setup screens depend on the device and software.

During Secure Folder setup, enable Reset with Samsung account if you want a recovery route for a forgotten Secure Folder lock. Without that route, forgetting the lock can mean losing access to the protected space. Samsung’s current guide says new Secure Folder backups are no longer supported, although restoration from earlier backups may still be possible. Do not treat Secure Folder as a replacement for an independent backup of irreplaceable files.

Remember that placing an app in Secure Folder can create a separate copy or separate sign-in rather than moving every instance of that app. Check where new photos, downloads and documents are being saved so you do not mistake a protected copy for a backup.

Enhanced data protection for Samsung Cloud

Supported Galaxy phones may offer Enhanced data protection for eligible Samsung Cloud backup or synchronization data. It is not a promise that every cloud item receives the same encryption coverage: Samsung identifies supported categories and cautions that some large files, including some message attachments, may not be encrypted under the feature.

When enabled, the phone generates a 28-character recovery code. Samsung says the code cannot be viewed again after generation. Store it in a secure location separate from the phone, and do not rely on memory alone. If both the device and recovery code are lost, the protected data may be unrecoverable. If you cannot store that code safely, leave Enhanced data protection off and use the ordinary backup settings you can reliably recover.

Before switching it on, identify which backup and synchronization categories matter to you and confirm they are supported on your model. Enhanced data protection improves the protection of eligible data, but it does not turn every Samsung Cloud item, every large file or every message attachment into a covered encrypted object.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

The menu path does not match

Model, carrier, region and software differences can rename or relocate controls. Search Settings for the feature name, install pending updates, and check the phone’s model-specific support guide. A missing item may mean the feature is not supported on that device rather than that you have overlooked it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smart Switch does not show the expected transfer

Unlock both phones, confirm the selected source type, grant the requested permissions and retry with the supplied cable or a stable Wi-Fi connection. A manual setup may be the better route if the old phone is unavailable or the data set is small. Keep both devices powered during a large move and do not interrupt the process simply because the progress display pauses.

Some data is missing after migration

Check whether the missing item belonged to an account, a protected app, an iPhone-only service or a folder outside the selected transfer categories. Sign in to the relevant account, restore from its own backup, or export the item from the old device while it is still available. Recheck messages, authenticator codes and password-manager access before resetting the source phone.

An app or accessory stopped working after a security change

Check which setting changed, starting with Auto Blocker Maximum restrictions and app permissions. Revert one change at a time, test again, and keep the strongest setting that preserves the function you actually need. If the issue is tied to a work profile or vehicle system, consult its administrator or manufacturer rather than disabling every protection.

You lost a recovery code or Secure Folder access

Do not assume Samsung can recreate a missing Enhanced data protection code. For Secure Folder, the recovery option must have been enabled beforehand to provide the documented account-based route; otherwise access may not be recoverable. This is why the recovery code and Secure Folder recovery choice belong in setup planning, not as an afterthought.
