Set up manually
Choose manual setup if you prefer to configure the Galaxy without carrying over data. You can still sign in to relevant accounts and install apps later. Neither route is universally better: transferring is convenient when you want continuity, while manual setup gives you a clean start.
3. Secure the phone and control lock-screen previews
Set a screen lock during setup or afterward in the phone’s Lock screen settings. Choose a PIN, password, or pattern that is not easy to guess. If the model supports it, you can also enroll a fingerprint or face recognition for convenient unlocking; biometric options and labels differ by device.

Review lock-screen notifications as well. If message previews could reveal private information to someone looking at your phone, change the notification display so sensitive content is hidden while the phone is locked. Samsung documents lock types and biometric options separately from notification controls.

Open Settings > Security and privacy and look for Permission manager (the exact path or label may vary). Review which apps can use the camera, microphone, location, and other sensitive access. Keep permissions that an app needs for its intended use, and remove access that is unnecessary.

Separately consider Samsung and Google controls for diagnostic data, account activity, and advertising personalization. These are distinct choices from app permissions, and labels or available controls may vary by software release and region. 5. Install system and app updates
Check for updates soon after setup, when the phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has enough charge. A new device may need to download updates or restart before everything is current.

- Open Settings > Software update and choose the available update-check or download option. Follow the prompts and allow the phone to restart if requested.
- Open the Google Play Store, go to your profile or app-management area, and check for app updates.
- Open the Galaxy Store and check its updates area for Samsung apps.
Update paths, timing, and availability can depend on the phone’s software version and carrier. If an update option is absent or an update is not offered, check again later or consult the carrier’s instructions for that device.

These are preference choices rather than required setup steps. Look under Settings > Display and Settings > Battery or the closest matching menus on your model.

- Screen timeout: A shorter timeout turns the display off sooner when idle, which can help reduce unnecessary screen-on time.
- Adaptive brightness: Enable it if you want brightness to adjust to ambient light, or change brightness manually if that better suits you.
- Refresh rate: Choose among the options your model offers. Higher refresh-rate settings can make motion look smoother; not every Galaxy has the same choices.
- Always On Display and dark mode: Turn them on or off based on your preference and how you want the screen to behave.
- Power saving: Use it when you want to conserve battery, but note that it can reduce performance and delay background app updates or notifications.
Feature names and locations vary by One UI version and model. If a listed setting is not present, your phone may not support it or may place it elsewhere.
7. Check what charger and cable your Galaxy needs
Before buying a wall adapter, check what came in the box and confirm the exact Galaxy model’s supported charging rate and cable requirements. Some phones ship without a wall adapter, and a charging speed or wireless-charging feature advertised for one model should not be assumed to apply to another. Samsung’s charging guidance, fast-charging information, and wireless-charging guidance can help you check compatibility. Use a compatible USB-C charger and cable for your phone rather than choosing by wattage alone.
8. Consider optional privacy and data-use features
Secure Folder
On supported models, Secure Folder can keep selected files and apps separate from the rest of the phone. Look for it in Settings or the app list; its availability depends on the device and software.
