How to Set Up a New Router With Your Existing Modem

To use a new router with a standalone modem, connect the modem’s Ethernet port to the router’s WAN or Internet port, restart the modem, power on the router, and complete the router’s setup in its app or web interface. The router should normally run in router mode.

First confirm whether your “modem” is actually an ISP gateway that also provides routing and Wi-Fi. If it is, either put the gateway in bridge mode and let the new router route your network, or use the gateway as the router and configure the new device as an access point (AP). Choosing one device to perform routing prevents the double-NAT problems that can affect port forwarding, gaming, VPNs and other connections.

Identify what you already have

The correct setup depends on whether the existing box is a modem only or a modem-router gateway. The word “modem” is often used for both, but the two devices perform different jobs.

Standalone modem

A standalone modem converts your ISP’s cable, DSL or other service signal into Ethernet. It normally has a service-line connection (such as coaxial or telephone/DSL) and one or more Ethernet ports, but it does not create a Wi-Fi network or manage your home network’s IP addresses. Your new router must perform those functions.

Modem-router gateway

An ISP gateway combines a modem, router and usually a Wi-Fi access point in one enclosure. Signs include the device broadcasting a Wi-Fi network, having several numbered LAN ports, or showing router and wireless settings in its administration page. ISP documentation or the model number on the label can confirm what it is.

This distinction matters because two devices routing the same network can create double NAT. In that arrangement, the gateway translates addresses once and the new router translates them again. Basic web access may still work, but inbound connections, port forwarding, some online games, VPN use and remote-access services can become difficult to configure.

Choose the network arrangement before connecting anything

Existing equipment Recommended arrangement What to watch for
Standalone modem Modem Ethernet to the new router’s WAN/Internet port; new router in router mode Complete the selected router’s setup and any ISP activation steps.
Gateway that supports bridge mode Enable bridge mode on the gateway; run the new router in router mode The gateway stops routing, so the new router receives the public connection. ISP support may be required.
Gateway that cannot be bridged Keep the gateway routing; turn off its Wi-Fi and configure the new router as an access point AP mode can disable some router features. Follow the exact wiring diagram for your model.

Bridge mode and AP mode are not interchangeable. Bridge mode disables routing on the gateway so the new router can route. AP mode changes the new device into a wireless access point on a network still managed by the gateway. NETGEAR’s support guidance recommends bridging a modem-router combination when possible and describes gateway Wi-Fi off plus AP mode as an alternative when bridge mode is unavailable. Labels and capabilities vary by firmware, manufacturer and ISP.

What you need

  • The new router and its power adapter.
  • The existing modem or gateway, with its service-line cable still attached.
  • An Ethernet cable. Use the cable supplied with the router if one is included, as recommended in NETGEAR’s setup instructions.
  • A phone, tablet or computer for the router’s app or web-based setup.
  • Your ISP account details if the provider requires activation, PPPoE credentials, VLAN settings, modem registration or a specific restart procedure. Those requirements cannot be assumed for every service.

Set up a new router with a standalone modem

Use this path when the existing device is a modem only. The new router will be the network’s sole router.

1. Position and inspect the equipment

Place the router where its status lights and cables are accessible, with ventilation around it. Leave the modem’s service-line connection in place. Do not disconnect the coaxial, DSL or other line that brings service into the modem.

2. Connect Ethernet to the correct ports

  1. Unplug the modem and router power adapters if they are already connected.
  2. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the modem’s Ethernet output.
  3. Plug the other end into the new router’s port labeled WAN, Internet or, on some models, a differently colored Internet port. Do not use a numbered LAN port for this modem-to-router link unless the router’s manual explicitly says to.
  4. Connect the router’s power adapter but leave it switched off until the modem has restarted.

NETGEAR’s Orbi Pro instructions use this same physical arrangement: Ethernet from the modem to the router’s Internet port. The exact port names on another model may differ.

3. Restart the modem first

  1. Restore power to the modem while its service-line cable remains connected.
  2. Wait for the modem’s normal service or online indicator. The time varies by service and device; do not assume that a particular light pattern is universal.
  3. After the modem has completed its startup, power on the new router.

This order allows the modem and ISP connection to establish before the router requests an address. Some providers specify a different activation or restart sequence, so use the ISP’s instructions if they conflict with a generic sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Run the router’s setup flow

  1. Connect your phone or computer to the router’s temporary Wi-Fi network, or connect a computer to a router LAN port with Ethernet. The network name and default password are usually printed on the router label or setup card.
  2. Open the router maker’s setup app or the web address printed in the manual. NETGEAR documents app and web-interface setup as examples; other manufacturers use different applications and addresses.
  3. When the wizard asks for an operating mode, select Router mode or the equivalent normal-router option.
  4. Allow the router to detect the Internet connection. If it asks for a connection type, use the value supplied by your ISP rather than guessing.
  5. Set a new Wi-Fi name and a strong Wi-Fi password. If the router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names, choose whether to keep them together or give them distinct names according to your device-compatibility needs.
  6. Change the router’s administrator password if the setup wizard does not require it, and install available firmware updates through the router’s own administration interface.

5. Verify the connection

Join the new Wi-Fi network from a phone or computer and open several websites. Check the router’s status page for a connected WAN or Internet address. If the router reports no Internet connection, leave the Wi-Fi settings alone while you troubleshoot the modem-to-WAN link, modem status and ISP activation.

Use a new router with an ISP gateway

If the old device provides both modem service and Wi-Fi, decide which box should route traffic. Avoid leaving both devices in their default router modes unless you have a specific, technically justified design.

Preferred path: bridge the gateway and use router mode

Bridge mode turns the gateway into a modem-like device. The new router then handles the public connection, DHCP, firewalling, port forwarding and Wi-Fi.

  1. Find the gateway’s model number and check the ISP or manufacturer instructions for bridge mode. The menu may be called Bridge Mode, Modem Mode or something similar.
  2. Before enabling it, note that the gateway’s routing and often its Wi-Fi functions will be disabled. Some ISP-managed services, such as provider voice or television features, may have special requirements; ask the ISP before changing the mode.
  3. Enable bridge mode and wait for the gateway to restart. If the interface warns that connected devices will lose access, that is expected.
  4. Connect Ethernet from the gateway’s Ethernet/LAN port to the new router’s WAN/Internet port.
  5. Power-cycle the equipment if the instructions require it, then start the new router in router mode.
  6. Complete the new router’s setup and create its Wi-Fi network.

NETGEAR’s gateway documentation recommends this arrangement when its router is installed in router mode because it avoids a second routing layer. The gateway’s exact menu and whether the ISP must enable the feature are provider- and model-specific.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternative path: keep gateway routing and use AP mode

Use this option when bridge mode is unavailable, unsupported by the ISP or unsuitable for a gateway service you must retain. The gateway remains the only router; the new device supplies additional Wi-Fi and wired access.

  1. Leave the gateway in its normal router mode.
  2. Disable the gateway’s Wi-Fi radios if you want the new router to provide the only wireless network. Some gateways require separate switches for each band.
  3. Connect the gateway to the new device using the port arrangement specified in the new router’s AP-mode instructions. Depending on the model, the documented connection may use the WAN/Internet port or a LAN port; do not assume one layout is universal.
  4. Open the new router’s app or web interface and select Access Point, AP mode or the equivalent. This usually turns off routing features such as DHCP and some firewall, VPN, parental-control or port-forwarding functions.
  5. Save the setting, allow the device to restart, then configure its Wi-Fi name and password.

NETGEAR describes gateway Wi-Fi off plus AP mode as an alternative to bridge mode. Because AP-mode features and cabling differ, follow the selected router’s manual and the gateway’s instructions rather than copying a port sequence from another brand.

Bridge mode versus AP mode: the practical difference

Characteristic Bridge mode on the gateway AP mode on the new router
Which device routes? The new router The ISP gateway
Where is Wi-Fi normally configured? On the new router On the new router; gateway Wi-Fi can usually be disabled
Double NAT risk Normally avoided Normally avoided because the new device does not route
Router features Available on the new router, subject to ISP restrictions Some features may be unavailable in AP mode
ISP involvement May be required, especially on managed gateways Usually does not require changing the gateway’s routing mode

Do not enable bridge mode on the gateway and AP mode on the new router as a way to “combine” both approaches. Those settings describe different network roles. Choose the arrangement that matches the device responsible for routing.

After setup: reconnect and secure the network

Reconnect clients deliberately

Every phone, computer, printer, camera and smart-home device must join the new Wi-Fi name if you changed the SSID. For a large household, using the previous Wi-Fi name and password may let many clients reconnect automatically, but verify that the router’s security settings remain current and that no old gateway is still broadcasting the same network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check wired connections

Connect a computer or switch to one of the new router’s numbered LAN ports, not its WAN/Internet port. Confirm that the device receives an address and can reach the Internet. If you retain the gateway in AP mode, wired devices can remain attached to the gateway’s LAN ports if the manufacturer’s design allows it.

Review security and administration

  • Replace default administrator credentials.
  • Use the strongest Wi-Fi security option supported by all of your important clients, preferably WPA3 where practical or WPA2 with a strong password when older devices require it.
  • Install firmware updates from the router’s own interface and enable automatic updates only if you are comfortable with the vendor’s process.
  • Disable remote administration from the Internet unless you have a specific need and understand how it is secured.
  • Create a guest network for visitors or untrusted devices when the router supports it.

Troubleshooting a failed installation

Symptom Checks and corrective action
Router says “No Internet” Confirm Ethernet is in the modem’s Ethernet port and the router’s WAN/Internet port. Check the modem’s online status, restart in the required order, and verify whether the ISP requires activation or registration.
Wi-Fi works but websites do not load Check the router’s WAN status and whether it received an address. Confirm the modem is online and that the selected connection type or credentials match the ISP’s instructions.
Both old and new Wi-Fi networks appear If the gateway is bridged, its Wi-Fi may be disabled automatically; otherwise turn off its wireless radios or give the networks distinct names while testing.
Online games, VPN or port forwarding fails Check for double NAT. Put the gateway in bridge mode and keep the new router in router mode, or use the gateway as the router and switch the new device to AP mode.
AP-mode option is missing Look for an operating-mode selector in the router’s advanced settings and confirm the model’s firmware supports AP mode. If it does not, consult the manufacturer or use the gateway’s supported configuration.
Gateway loses ISP service after bridge mode Restore the previous mode if necessary and contact the ISP. Some managed gateways require provider-side changes or special handling for bundled services.
Setup app cannot find the router Connect directly to the router’s temporary Wi-Fi or a LAN port, disable cellular VPN or similar network isolation temporarily, and follow the model’s reset or discovery instructions. Do not factory-reset the modem unless the ISP tells you to.

ISP-specific requirements you cannot safely guess

Official setup guides can explain the physical connection and operating modes, but they do not establish one universal ISP procedure. Depending on the service, the provider may require an account activation page, modem registration, a MAC-address update, PPPoE credentials, VLAN configuration or a prescribed reboot sequence. None of those requirements applies to every reader.

Use the ISP’s documentation for the exact modem or gateway model, or ask support what is required when replacing a router. Have the modem’s serial number, MAC address and account information available if the provider requests them. If the ISP supplied the gateway, ask whether bridge mode is supported and which services stop working when it is enabled.

When a mesh system changes the plan

A mesh kit is still a router system for this purpose. With a standalone modem, connect the primary mesh unit’s WAN/Internet port to the modem and select router mode during setup. With an ISP gateway, use the same bridge-mode or AP-mode decision described above; satellite nodes do not change which device performs routing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not add mesh nodes until the primary unit has a working Internet connection. Set up the main unit first, verify service, then add satellites according to that system’s instructions. If coverage is the only reason for replacing the router, AP mode behind the gateway may be sufficient, but it can limit features advertised for full router mode.

A concise installation checklist

  • Identify whether the existing box is a modem or a gateway.
  • Decide which device will route the network.
  • For a standalone modem, connect Ethernet to the new router’s WAN/Internet port.
  • For a gateway, use bridge mode with the new router in router mode when supported, or gateway routing with the new device in AP mode.
  • Restart the modem or gateway and router in the order specified by the manufacturer or ISP.
  • Complete the new router’s app or web setup.
  • Set Wi-Fi and administrator credentials, update firmware and reconnect clients.
  • Test both wired and wireless access.
  • If service fails, check cabling, WAN status, operating mode, ISP activation and model-specific instructions before changing additional settings.

The reliable setup in one sentence

A standalone modem feeds the new router’s WAN port; an ISP gateway must either be bridged so the new router routes, or remain the router while the new device operates as an access point. Once that role is clear, the physical installation is straightforward, while the exact menus and ISP activation steps remain specific to your hardware and service.
