The safest first-day setup is sequential: confirm the phone’s exact model, market and OxygenOS version; install every update currently offered; audit app permissions and special access; enable device finding; then use battery-usage data before restricting anything. OnePlus changes menu names and feature availability between models, regions, carriers and OxygenOS releases, so treat the paths below as documented examples rather than universal instructions.
Do the update before following version-specific directions. Once the phone is current, make privacy decisions app by app and select a charging or battery-saving strategy that fits how you actually use the device.

1. Identify the phone before changing settings
Write down the model name, sales region and installed OxygenOS version before you begin. A phone sold through a carrier can receive software on a different schedule from the same model bought unlocked, and a feature documented for one OxygenOS release may be renamed, relocated or unavailable on another. The information printed on the box, purchase record and the phone’s device-information screen should agree; if they do not, use the device’s own information as the basis for the rest of this guide.
Keep those three identifiers together while you work. They tell you whether an instruction from an OxygenOS 14 manual or a OnePlus Open manual is likely to match your handset. They also give support staff the detail needed to diagnose a missing menu, delayed update or unusual battery drain.

Why region and carrier matter
OnePlus says OxygenOS 16 rollout timing varies by device, country and carrier. Carrier-exclusive schedules are controlled by the carriers. “No update available” therefore does not prove that your phone is permanently unsupported; it may simply be outside the current rollout group. Feature availability can vary for the same reason.
Record a baseline
Before installing lots of apps, note the battery percentage, mobile-network conditions and the apps you expect to use for messaging, navigation, work and media. This is not a laboratory test. It is a reference that helps you distinguish normal setup activity from a persistent drain problem after the phone has settled.
2. Install system updates first
Open the system-update screen in Settings and let it finish checking. Install every update offered for your exact device, then restart if the phone requests it. Leave the phone on a reliable connection and adequate charge while the package downloads and applies.

Updates can change the name, location or behavior of the controls you are about to use. After installation, open Settings again and verify the displayed OxygenOS version. If the phone still reports no update, record the date and the exact model, region and carrier; checking repeatedly later is more useful than forcing an unofficial package.
What to expect from staged rollouts
- A rollout can be batched rather than simultaneous for every owner.
- The same model can receive an update at different times in different countries.
- Carrier variants can follow a carrier-controlled schedule.
- A feature described in an OxygenOS 16 announcement may not yet be enabled on your device or market.
Use the menus that actually appear after the update. The paths in the next sections are examples from specific OnePlus manuals, not a promise that every phone will display identical wording.
3. Audit permissions one app at a time
On an OxygenOS 14 device, the documented route is Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Open each permission category and inspect the apps listed there. Start with the permissions that can reveal where you are, what you say, who you know or what you have stored.

| Permission | Keep access when… | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Location | The app provides navigation, location-based automation or another function that genuinely needs position data. | Does it need location all the time, only while open, or not at all? |
| Camera | You scan, take photos, make video calls or use an in-app camera feature. | Would the app still work if camera access were denied? |
| Microphone | You make calls, record audio or use voice input in that app. | Is voice capture part of the feature you use? |
| Contacts | The app needs address-book matching or contact selection for a function you chose. | Can you enter a person manually instead? |
| Notifications | You need alerts, messages or status updates from the app. | Would disabling alerts remove a time-sensitive function? |
| Photos and videos | You select, edit, upload or share media through the app. | Can the app use selected items instead of your entire library? |
Use the narrowest choice the phone offers, such as denying access, allowing it only while the app is in use, or permitting it for a specific task. Keep access when removing it would break a function you rely on; remove access when the app has no clear reason to use it. Revisit a decision after using the app rather than granting every request during a rushed first launch.
Read the prompt, not just the app name
An app may request a permission for an optional feature rather than its basic purpose. A photo editor may need photos only when you import an image. A shopping app may not need a microphone at all. If an app stops working after a denial, restore that one permission and test again instead of granting a broad set of unrelated permissions.
4. Limit photo access where the option exists
The OxygenOS 14 manual describes a Photos and videos choice of Ask every time. When the app requests media, you can select individual items instead of giving it continuous access to the whole library.
This control is conditional. The app must target Android 13 or later and support the option. If you do not see “Ask every time,” that absence does not mean the phone is malfunctioning; the app or its target version may not provide the required interface. Use the most limited alternative shown by Permission manager and review the app after it updates.
A practical photo-review routine
- Open Permission manager and select Photos and videos.
- Choose an app whose access you do not want to leave unrestricted.
- Select Ask every time when the option is available.
- Launch the app and choose only the images needed for the task.
- Return to Permission manager if the app later asks for broader access than you intended.
5. Inspect special app access separately
Normal permissions are not the entire privacy picture. In OxygenOS 14, the documented route is Settings > Apps > Special app access. Review entries for capabilities such as reading notifications, managing files and displaying over other apps.

These powers can affect information outside the app’s own screen or place content above other apps. Grant a capability only when you understand the feature that needs it. For example, an app that must show a persistent overlay should explain that purpose; an app with no obvious reason to read notifications should not receive that access simply because it requested it.

Use a purpose test
- Purpose: What exact feature requires this capability?
- Scope: Does the capability expose more information or screen control than the feature needs?
- Fallback: Does the app still perform its main job without it?
- Review date: If you grant it temporarily, when will you check it again?
Keep a short list of unusual grants. That makes a later privacy review faster and helps you notice an app that gained a new capability after an update.
6. Turn on finding before the phone can be lost
The OxygenOS 14 manual’s documented path is Settings > Security and privacy > Device finders > Find My Device. Complete Google account verification when prompted. Do this while the phone is in your hands; setting it up after a loss is too late.
Also consider Require password to power off, found under More security & privacy in the documented flow. OnePlus says this can help prevent someone from shutting down a lost phone before it can be located. It adds a small inconvenience when you intentionally power down the device, so make sure you know the password or other credential required by your security setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the parts that make finding useful
- The phone is signed in to the Google account you intend to use for finding it.
- Google account verification has completed rather than being skipped.
- You know the account credentials needed to access the finding service from another device.
- You have tested the setting while the phone is online and powered on.
Finding is a recovery aid, not a guarantee. A phone that is powered off, out of coverage or otherwise unable to communicate may not report its current position. The password-to-power-off setting is therefore a supplementary step, not a replacement for a strong screen lock and careful handling.
7. Measure battery use before restricting apps
Do not begin by putting every app into the most restrictive battery mode. First open the battery-usage details on the phone and identify which apps or processes actually consume power. The OnePlus Open manual documents battery-usage details and app battery optimization as the places to investigate background drain.
Look for a pattern over a normal day rather than reacting to one spike during setup. System updates, photo indexing, account synchronization and restoring applications can temporarily consume more power. An app that repeatedly appears near the top after the phone has settled deserves investigation; an app that was busy once during setup may not.

Match the action to the symptom
| Observed pattern | First response | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| One app uses substantial background power every day | Open its battery-optimization controls and test a less permissive background setting. | Notifications, syncing or uploads may be delayed. |
| Several apps show ordinary use but the phone loses charge overnight | Check network conditions, recent setup activity and the usage period before changing many app settings. | Broad restrictions can hide the cause while breaking background work. |
| A messaging, calendar or security app is high in the list | Keep timely background behavior unless you can accept delayed alerts. | Battery savings may be smaller than the cost of missed or late notifications. |
| Drain begins immediately after an update | Allow the device to complete settling tasks, then compare another normal usage period. | Changing several settings at once makes the result impossible to interpret. |
Apply one meaningful change at a time and observe the result. If a notification arrives late, background synchronization stops or an upload fails, undo the restriction for that app. Optimization is a control for a measured problem, not a badge that every app should receive.

The OnePlus Open manual describes three relevant choices: optimized charging, Battery saver and high-performance mode. Their availability and wording can differ on other OnePlus models, so confirm that your phone exposes the same controls.
| Setting | What it does in the documented manual | Benefit | Cost or constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optimized charging | Learns usage habits and can delay charging beyond 80% until shortly before expected use. | It can reduce the time the battery spends fully charged when your routine is predictable. | Charging may pause around 80%, and the behavior depends on learning your pattern. |
| Battery saver | Restricts some features and apps to reduce power consumption. | Useful when you need the remaining charge to last longer. | Background work, performance or notifications may be limited. |
| High-performance mode | Prioritizes performance and increases power consumption. | Useful for a demanding task when responsiveness matters more than endurance. | It uses more power and is the opposite of a battery-saving setting. |
Use optimized charging for a repeatable routine
Enable it if you usually charge on a predictable schedule and can tolerate the phone waiting near 80% before the expected unplug time. If your schedule changes often, the delay may be inconvenient. The manual describes the learning behavior; it does not promise a particular lifespan increase or a fixed charging percentage on every model.
Use Battery saver as a situational tool
Turn it on when you need endurance more than unrestricted background activity, such as during travel or when an outlet is unavailable. Check which features and apps are restricted on your model. Do not assume that a saver profile will preserve every notification or synchronization task.
Reserve high-performance mode for deliberate bursts
High-performance mode is appropriate only when a demanding task justifies extra consumption. Turn it back off when the task ends. It is not a way to improve everyday battery life.

9. A first-day sequence that avoids rework
- Confirm identity: Record the exact model, region and OxygenOS version.
- Update: Check the system-update screen, install available software and restart if requested.
- Verify menus: Reopen Settings after the update and note the labels your device actually uses.
- Audit ordinary permissions: Use Permission manager for location, camera, microphone, contacts, notifications and photos.
- Restrict photos: Choose Ask every time and individual items when the app and Android version support it.
- Audit special access: Review notification reading, file management and overlay privileges.
- Enable finding: Complete Google account verification in Find My Device.
- Consider shutdown protection: Decide whether Require password to power off suits your routine.
- Establish a battery baseline: Use the phone normally and inspect battery-usage details.
- Change one battery control: Apply optimization, Battery saver or optimized charging only when its trade-off fits your needs.
10. Troubleshoot the common surprises
A menu in the guide is missing
Check the model and OxygenOS version again. A path from the OxygenOS 14 manual may not exist under the same name on another release, and a carrier or regional build may omit a feature. Search the Settings app for a distinctive term such as “Permission manager,” “Special app access” or “Find My Device,” then use the result that matches your software. Do not install an unofficial package merely to recreate a screenshot.

“Ask every time” is not offered
The documented photo selector depends on the app targeting Android 13 or later and supporting the option. Update the app through its normal channel, then check again. If it still is not available, choose the narrowest permission your phone provides and avoid granting full-library access unless the task requires it.
Notifications become late after optimization
Return to battery-usage or app battery-optimization controls and relax the restriction for the affected app. Messaging, calendar, authentication and safety apps often have a higher notification cost than a casual app; decide whether that reliability is worth the power used.
The phone cannot be located
Confirm that Find My Device was enabled, Google account verification completed and the phone had power and connectivity. If you enabled Require password to power off, remember that it helps only when the phone remains on and someone cannot shut it down without the credential.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBattery life is poor after setup
Inspect battery-usage details instead of resetting every permission. Give the phone a normal usage period after updates and restoration finish, identify the leading consumer, and change one setting at a time. If no app explains the drain, document the model, region, OxygenOS version and the usage conditions before contacting support.
11. If you need another charger
A USB-C wall charger is an optional replacement or second charger, not a universal requirement for this setup. Confirm the exact model and regional compatibility before buying one. The cited manual discusses charging settings but does not establish a single charger standard for every OnePlus phone, so do not assume that a particular charging speed or proprietary feature applies to your device.
12. Keep the setup useful over time
Recheck Permission manager and Special app access after installing a batch of apps or after a major OxygenOS update. App updates can change the permissions they request, while system updates can rename or reorganize controls.
Review battery-usage details whenever endurance changes noticeably. If a previously quiet app becomes a regular background consumer, investigate that app rather than applying a blanket restriction. When your routine changes, reassess optimized charging: a setting learned around a predictable schedule may be less convenient during irregular travel or shift work.
The durable approach is selective: update first, grant only the access a feature needs, enable finding while the phone is safe, and use battery controls in response to observed behavior. That preserves the notifications and background tasks you depend on without leaving unnecessary access or unrestricted drain in place.
