Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSign in to the new Kindle with the same Amazon account used on the old one, connect it to Wi‑Fi, and your Kindle Store purchases and cloud-archived personal documents can be downloaded from the library. Files copied directly to the old reader by USB are different: they are stored only on that device and must be backed up and copied manually. This guide shows how to set up the replacement, move each type of content, preserve reading progress, and fix titles that do not appear.
What transfers to a new Kindle automatically?
Amazon’s Kindle User’s Guide describes the rule plainly: “Transferring content from your old Kindle to your new one depends on the source of the content.” The account and storage method matter more than the age or model of the reader.

| Content on the old reader | Where it is stored | How it reaches the new Kindle | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Books, periodicals, and magazines purchased from the Kindle Store | Amazon Cloud, associated with your account | Register the new Kindle to the same account, then download from Your Library; web delivery is also available | Available for redownload after registration |
| Personal documents sent with Send to Kindle while Personal Document Archiving is enabled | Your Kindle library in the Amazon Cloud | Download from Your Library or deliver from Manage Your Content and Devices | Remains available for later downloads |
| Files copied directly to the old Kindle over USB | Only in the old device’s storage | Copy them from the old device’s documents folder to a computer, then into the new Kindle’s documents folder | Not cloud-backed; back up the originals before erasing or disposing of the old device |
| Reading position, notes, highlights, and bookmarks | Synchronization data associated with supported Kindle devices and apps | Keep Sync enabled and sync the new Kindle after registration | Can stay aligned across supported devices and apps; locally copied files may require separate handling |
In short, using the same Amazon account transfers access to cloud content, not a physical copy of every file that was ever placed on the old reader. Amazon says content purchased from the Kindle Store is “securely stored and available in the Amazon Cloud,” while personal content transferred directly but not e-mailed to the previous Kindle “will need to be transferred manually.”
Set up the new Kindle before moving books
Do the initial setup while the reader has adequate battery power and access to the internet. Menus can differ by model and software version, but the sequence is consistent.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
- Charge and power on. Connect the supplied USB cable and adapter, then press the power button. Choose your language and region when prompted.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi. Open the Kindle’s Wi‑Fi controls (the exact path varies by model), select your network, and enter its password. Internet access is required for registration, purchases, downloads, and synchronization.
- Register with the existing account. Enter the same Amazon account credentials used on the old Kindle. Registration unlocks the Kindle Store and the library belonging to that account. Do not create or select a different account if you expect the old account’s books to appear.
- Allow the home screen and library to load. The first sync can take a little time, particularly when the account contains many books or documents.
- Leave Airplane mode off for migration. Wireless delivery and synchronization cannot complete while the Kindle is offline.
If the old reader was registered to another account, the account mismatch is the likely reason its books are absent from the new device. On the old Kindle, open Settings > Your account, deregister it if necessary, and then sign in with the correct account. Deregistering does not transfer USB-only files, so copy those files first.
Download Kindle Store purchases and archived documents
Use Your Library on the new Kindle
- Open Your Library.
- Clear the Downloaded filter, or choose All, so the view includes items that are in the cloud but not yet on this device.
- Search for a title if the library is large.
- Tap a book or document to download it. Repeat for the items you want stored offline.
A title can be present in the account but absent from the device’s downloaded view. Changing the filter to All is therefore a necessary check before assuming the book failed to transfer.
Deliver a title from a web browser
Web delivery is useful when a title does not appear in the library or when you want to queue several items for a particular Kindle.

- Open Manage Your Content and Devices for the Amazon account.
- Choose Content > Books.
- Select the title, then choose Deliver or Remove from Device.
- Select the newly registered Kindle as the destination and choose Make Changes.
- Return to the Kindle and run a sync. The exact sync command is labelled Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items, depending on the model.
This method works for cloud-held Kindle books and archived personal documents. It does not make a USB-only file cloud content; those files still require a manual copy or a new Send to Kindle upload.
Move personal files that were copied by USB
Amazon treats a file dragged directly into the old Kindle’s storage as device-local. It is not placed in the Amazon Cloud, and Amazon says such content is permanently deleted from the device when removed. Make a backup before resetting, trading in, or disposing of the old reader.

Copy through a computer
- Connect the old Kindle. Use a USB cable that supports data, not only charging. The reader should appear as external storage on a compatible computer.
- Open its storage and locate the documents folder. Copy the files to a clearly named backup folder on the computer. Keep the originals until you have opened representative files on the new Kindle.
- Eject the old Kindle safely. Disconnect it only after the computer has finished copying and the device has been ejected.
- Connect the new Kindle. Open its storage and copy the backed-up files into the new Kindle’s documents folder.
- Eject and check the library. After disconnecting, allow the Kindle to index the files. Large collections can take time to appear; keep the reader charged and awake long enough for indexing to finish.
Windows generally exposes a Kindle as external storage for this drag-and-drop process. On macOS, Amazon’s current guidance says users need the Send to Kindle USB File Manager for Kindle Scribe and models released in 2024. That requirement is model-specific; verify the connector and the supported transfer method for your exact Kindle before assuming a normal Finder copy will work.
Check file compatibility and duplicates
A USB copy preserves the file itself, not necessarily the metadata, cover, or reading state associated with a cloud-archived Kindle edition. If the same document was also sent through Send to Kindle, you may see two entries. Open the intended copy and remove only the duplicate you have verified; do not delete the computer backup until the migration is complete.

Transfer books wirelessly with Send to Kindle
Send to Kindle is the practical alternative when you no longer want to connect both readers by cable. Upload the original files to the service, choose the Amazon account associated with the new Kindle, and download the resulting library items after the device syncs. Personal Document Archiving must be enabled if you want the files to remain available for future downloads rather than only on one device.
Supported formats and size limit
Amazon’s current Kindle Support guidance (accessed in 2026) lists these supported file types: PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP, and EPUB. Each file can be up to 200 MB. A file above that limit must be reduced, split, or converted before it can be sent.
When wireless transfer is the better choice
- The old reader is unavailable, but you have the original files on a computer or phone.
- Your computer cannot expose a newer Kindle as ordinary external storage.
- You want the document archived so it can be downloaded on another supported Kindle or app later.
- You want to avoid carrying out a two-device USB copy.
Send to Kindle does not recover a file that existed only on the old device and has no backup. First retrieve or copy that file; then send the copy wirelessly.

Keep reading progress, notes, and bookmarks aligned
Kindle synchronization can keep reading position, notes, highlights, and bookmarks aligned across supported Kindle devices and apps when Sync is enabled. After registering the new device, connect to Wi‑Fi and run Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items. Open a book only after the sync has completed if preserving the latest position is important.
Recommended Free Tools
Synchronization applies to information Amazon can associate with the account and supported content. A document copied directly by USB is not automatically converted into an archived cloud item, so do not assume that its annotations or position will appear on the new Kindle. Keep the old reader until you have confirmed the files and any important notes.
Choose the right migration method
| Method | Content source | Connection | Device or OS dependency | Persistence | Troubleshooting effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Download from Your Library | Kindle Store purchase or archived Send to Kindle document | Cloud over Wi‑Fi | Any registered Kindle with internet access | Cloud content remains downloadable | Check account, Wi‑Fi, filters, and sync |
| Deliver from Manage Your Content and Devices | Cloud-held book or personal document | Web request followed by Kindle sync | Requires the destination Kindle to be registered to that account | Remains in the account’s cloud library | Confirm destination, choose Make Changes, then sync |
| USB copy between devices through a computer | File copied directly to the old Kindle | Direct USB and computer storage | Windows external-storage behavior; macOS requires Amazon’s USB File Manager for Kindle Scribe and 2024-released models | Local unless you separately back up or send the file to Kindle | Check data-capable cable, documents folder, permissions, and safe ejection |
| Send to Kindle | Original PDF, EPUB, Office, text, image, or web-document file | Wireless upload and download | Supported format, account access, and 200 MB-per-file limit | Cloud-archived when Personal Document Archiving is enabled | Check file size, format, account, and sync |
Use the cloud methods first for purchases and archived documents. Use USB only for files that genuinely exist on the old device, and use Send to Kindle when you have originals but want a wireless, reusable library copy.

The new Kindle is on the wrong account
Compare the account shown under Settings > Your account on both devices. If they differ, deregister the old device if needed and register the new Kindle with the account that owns the books. A title purchased under another account will not appear in this account’s library.
The library is filtered to downloaded items
Open Your Library, choose All, remove active filters, and search by title. Cloud items are not visible when the view is restricted to content already stored locally.

Wi‑Fi is disconnected or Airplane mode is on
Confirm that the Kindle is connected to Wi‑Fi and that Airplane mode is off. Purchase, download, and sync operations require internet access. Reconnect, then run Sync My Kindle or Sync and Check for Items.
The title needs explicit delivery
In Manage Your Content and Devices > Content > Books, select the title and use Deliver or Remove from Device. Select the new Kindle, choose Make Changes, and sync again.
The Kindle is still indexing
After a large USB copy or a batch download, leave the reader powered and connected. Search again after indexing has had time to finish. If only one file is absent, verify that the copy completed and that it is in the documents folder rather than a different storage location.
A temporary software or sync fault is blocking the update
Restart the Kindle and retry the sync. Restarting is especially useful after changing accounts, reconnecting Wi‑Fi, or delivering content from the web.
The file was USB-only and no backup exists
Cloud recovery is not available for a file that was copied directly to the old device and never sent to Kindle. Keep the old reader and search its documents folder. If the file is still there, copy it to a computer before attempting any reset or disposal. If it has already been deleted and no other original exists, the account library cannot recreate it.

- Open the old library and identify books, documents, and notes that matter.
- Confirm that Kindle Store purchases appear under the account you will use on the new device.
- Set the new library to All and download representative books.
- Deliver any missing cloud titles from Manage Your Content and Devices, then sync.
- Copy every USB-only file from the old documents folder to a computer backup.
- Open representative PDFs, EPUBs, and other personal files on the new Kindle.
- Check that important reading positions, highlights, notes, and bookmarks have synchronized where supported.
- Only after these checks should you reset, trade in, or dispose of the old reader.
Common questions about Kindle migration
Will my books transfer if I use the same Amazon account?
Kindle Store purchases and Send to Kindle documents kept in Personal Document Archiving become available to download from the cloud after the new Kindle is registered. Files copied directly by USB do not transfer automatically.
Can I transfer books without a USB cable?
Yes, for cloud-held items and files you still have on a computer or phone. Download cloud content through Your Library or deliver it from Manage Your Content and Devices. Send supported personal files through Send to Kindle; each file must be no larger than 200 MB.
Do I have to download the entire library?
No. Cloud items remain available in Your Library, and you can download only the titles needed offline. Use the All view to see them, then tap individual titles.

Reading position synchronization depends on supported Kindle devices and apps and on Sync being enabled. Connect to Wi‑Fi, run a sync on the old device and the new one, and then reopen the title. A USB-only personal file may not carry the same cloud synchronization data.
What should I do before selling the old Kindle?
Back up its documents folder, verify important files on the new reader, confirm cloud books are downloadable, and check notes and reading positions. USB-only content that is removed without a backup cannot be retrieved from the Amazon Cloud.
