To move your Amazon Kindle library to a new Kindle, register the new device to the Amazon account that contains your books, connect it to Wi-Fi, and sync. Most books associated with that account can then be downloaded from the Kindle library. If a title is missing, use Amazon’s Manage Your Content and Devices page to deliver it to the new Kindle.
Before you start
Have the new Kindle, access to the Amazon account associated with your books, and a Wi-Fi network name and password ready. The setup labels below come from Amazon’s guide for the Kindle 11th Generation; menus may differ on other generations.

- Make sure you can sign in to the Amazon account used to buy or access the books.
- Have Wi-Fi available so the Kindle can register, sync, and download content.
Set up and register the new Kindle
- Turn on the Kindle and choose your language and location when prompted.
- Choose Set up on this Kindle to enter details on the e-reader, or Set up with your phone to use Amazon’s Simple Setup.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi and follow the on-screen instructions to register it to the Amazon account associated with your books.
- After setup, connect to the internet and sync the Kindle. Amazon says sync can download pending books, notes, and highlights, and back up the furthest page read. See Amazon’s Kindle setup guide and Sync Your Kindle E-Reader.
When setting up with your phone
Amazon Simple Setup requires the Kindle app on an iOS or Android phone, Amazon Device Simple Setup enabled in the app, and Bluetooth enabled on the phone. Android also requires Location Services. Amazon says the app can detect the Amazon account and Wi-Fi passwords previously saved on the phone. If those requirements are not met, choose setup on the Kindle instead.
Find and download books from your old Kindle
Books in your Amazon account library are associated with the account, not just the old e-reader. Once the new Kindle is registered to the right account and online, sync it and check its library for the titles you want. You do not need to transfer each account book directly from the old Kindle.

- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Sync is also how Amazon describes retrieving pending books, notes, and highlights and backing up the furthest page read. Amazon’s cited guidance does not promise that every locally added file or every type of annotation will move through this process. Amazon specifically notes that handwritten annotations are currently accessible across Kindle Scribe devices.
Manually deliver a book that is missing
If the title is in your Amazon account but has not appeared on the new Kindle, send it to that device from Amazon’s content page:

- Open Manage Your Content and Devices, choose Content, then select Books.
- Find the title and choose Deliver or Remove from Device.
- Select the new registered Kindle and choose Make Changes.
- Connect the Kindle to Wi-Fi, sync it, and check the library again. Amazon’s content delivery instructions explain this device-selection process.
If books still do not appear
- Check connectivity. Confirm the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi and Airplane mode is off.
- Sync and check for items. From the home screen, use the Sync icon or choose Sync and Check for Items.
- Check the account and delivery target. Verify that the new Kindle is registered to the account containing the book, then use Manage Your Content and Devices to deliver the title and sync again.
- Check the library and order. Search for the title and review library filters. If it is absent from Manage Your Content and Devices, check whether the digital order is complete.
- Restart the Kindle. If the title remains missing after the checks above, restart the device and check again.
For Wi-Fi problems, verify the network name and password, move closer to the router, restart the Kindle and router, update the Kindle software, or try a phone hotspot. Compatibility can also matter: Amazon says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi; devices released before 2021 also do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. See Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

A factory reset is not a normal transfer step. Amazon says it removes personal data, downloaded content, and content that has not synced, and deregisters the Kindle. Amazon lists preparing a device for sale or gifting and some troubleshooting situations among reset uses. If you intend to keep using the old Kindle, leave it registered until you have confirmed the content you need is available elsewhere. See Amazon’s reset guidance.
