How to Set Up a New Google Pixel Phone and Transfer Your Data

Turn on the Pixel, connect it to Wi‑Fi, and follow the setup wizard. When prompted, choose direct transfer from your old Android phone or iPhone, or restore a Google Account backup if the old phone is unavailable. Back up the old phone first, keep both phones charged and unlocked, and have the old phone’s screen-lock PIN ready.

The exact screens and available features vary by Pixel generation, Android or iOS version, carrier, and country. Google’s current setup guidance covers most phones running Android 5.0 or later and iPhones running iOS 8.0 or later, with limitations. Check the model-specific instructions if a menu differs.

Prepare before turning on the Pixel

A few minutes of preparation prevents most incomplete transfers. Google Pixel Help explicitly says: “Before you begin to set up your new phone, back up your old device.” Use the official Pixel setup guide for the latest model-specific prompts.

Back up the old phone

  • Run the phone’s normal Google or Apple backup and wait for it to finish.
  • Open apps that keep their own data and make an in-app backup. WhatsApp, for example, may require a separate backup before the Pixel setup wizard can restore its chats.
  • Do not erase or trade in the old phone until you have checked contacts, photos, messages, authenticator codes, and important app data on the Pixel.

Gather the essentials

  • Charge both phones. A transfer can take a long time when the source contains many photos or videos.
  • Know the old phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. The transfer process may require you to unlock the source phone repeatedly.
  • Use a strong Wi‑Fi connection. Have a USB‑C data cable available if Wi‑Fi is weak or you prefer a wired transfer; Google lists the cable as optional when Wi‑Fi is reliable.
  • Have a SIM-eject tool only if your Pixel and carrier use a physical SIM.
  • Keep the Google Account email and password that contain your backup available.

Pixel 10 and later phones sold in the United States do not have a physical SIM slot, so those models use eSIM. Hardware and SIM arrangements differ in other regions.

Choose the right transfer route

The setup wizard offers different paths depending on the source phone and whether it is available. Use this decision table before you begin.

Situation Recommended route What you need Important limitation
Old Android phone is available Direct Android-to-Pixel transfer Unlocked old phone, Wi‑Fi or USB‑C cable, Google Account Supported data varies by Android version, Pixel generation, app, and available storage.
Old iPhone is available iPhone-to-Pixel transfer during setup Unlocked iPhone, cable or Wi‑Fi where offered, Apple credentials as needed Turn off iMessage and FaceTime; iCloud-only photos need a separate route.
Old phone is lost, broken, or unavailable Restore a Google Account backup Wi‑Fi and the Google Account that holds the backup Only data present in the backup can be restored.
Transfer was skipped or interrupted on Pixel 9 or later Use Android Switch after setup Old phone or an available backup, Wi‑Fi or cable Post-setup restoration support is documented for Pixel 9 and later.
Earlier Pixel model after setup Follow the model’s completion prompt or reset and start again Backup and enough time for a full setup A factory reset erases data already placed on the new phone.

Google documents the Android path at Transfer data from an Android phone to a Pixel, the iPhone path at Transfer data from an iPhone to a Pixel, and cloud restoration at Restore data on a Pixel from a backup.

Set up the Pixel for the first time

  1. Power on the phone. Hold the power button until the Google logo appears, then choose your language and region.
  2. Connect to a network. Select a Wi‑Fi network and enter its password. If cellular service is already available, you may also see mobile-network prompts.
  3. Read the transfer prompt. Choose the option to copy apps and data if your old phone is available. Choose the backup-restore option if it is not.
  4. Verify the old phone. Unlock it with its screen lock when the Pixel asks. Follow any pairing, QR-code, cable, or confirmation instructions shown on both screens.
  5. Select what to copy. Review the categories and estimated size before starting. Remove items you do not need if the Pixel has less free storage than the source phone.
  6. Leave both phones alone. Keep them near each other, connected to power if possible, and do not disable Wi‑Fi or unplug a cable until the wizard reports completion.
  7. Sign in and secure the Pixel. Add your Google Account, create a screen lock, and configure fingerprint or face unlock when offered. Install system updates before judging whether an app or setting is missing.

Some introductory features, permissions, and personalization choices can be completed later. Skipping them does not usually prevent basic phone use, but data transfer and backup choices are easiest to make while the setup wizard is open.

Transfer from an Android phone

Wireless Android transfer

  1. On the Pixel, select the option to copy apps and data from an old device.
  2. Choose Android as the source and follow the pairing instructions. Keep the old phone unlocked.
  3. Approve the connection on the old phone, then choose the data categories to copy.
  4. Keep both devices on strong Wi‑Fi and charging until the progress indicator finishes.
  5. Review the Pixel’s app list, contacts, messages, photos, and settings after the wizard completes. Apps may continue installing from Google Play in the background.

Wireless transfer is convenient when the phones are in the same room and the network is stable. Google does not publish a universal speed ranking between wireless and cable methods; the result depends on network quality, data volume, phone hardware, and storage.

Google Pixel 10a - 30+ Hours Battery, Camera Coach, Gemini - Obsidian 128GB | Gemini Live, durable design, 7 years of Pixel Drops, 30+ hour battery, Camera Coach, Call Screen, Car Crash Detection
  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

USB‑C cable transfer

  1. Start the same copy-and-transfer flow on the Pixel.
  2. Connect the phones with a USB‑C data cable, or use the adapter supplied or recommended for your Pixel if the connectors differ.
  3. Unlock the old phone and approve file access or the transfer request.
  4. Select the categories to copy and keep the cable connected until the Pixel reports completion.

A cable can avoid an unreliable Wi‑Fi connection, but a charge-only cable will not carry data. If the phones do not detect one another, try a different known-good data cable and unlock both screens.

Transfer from an iPhone

Before moving from iPhone, disable Apple messaging services that can otherwise continue routing messages to the old platform:

  • Turn off iMessage in the iPhone’s Messages settings.
  • Turn off FaceTime in the iPhone’s FaceTime settings.

Then start the iPhone transfer option on the Pixel and follow the on-screen cable or wireless instructions. Keep the iPhone unlocked and approve every connection request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the documented iPhone route can copy

Google’s current guide says photos stored locally on the iPhone can transfer through the documented setup path. Photos that exist only in iCloud do not automatically become local iPhone files for this process. Move those separately by syncing them to Google Photos or using Apple’s iCloud transfer route, then verify that the library is visible on the Pixel.

Contacts, calendars, messages, and compatible free apps may be offered for transfer, but app availability and app data are controlled by each developer. Paid iPhone apps may not have an Android equivalent, and encrypted or app-specific data may require the app’s own export or backup process. WhatsApp history can require additional steps inside WhatsApp rather than relying solely on the Pixel wizard.

If the iPhone uses an eSIM

The Pixel may offer eSIM transfer during onboarding, but the option appears only when the Pixel model, iPhone, mobile carrier, and account support it. If no transfer prompt appears, finish setup over Wi‑Fi and ask the carrier to activate an eSIM on the Pixel.

Set up mobile service: SIM and eSIM

Physical SIM

  1. Turn off the old phone if your carrier recommends doing so.
  2. Use the SIM tool to open the Pixel tray, insert the correctly sized SIM, and close the tray.
  3. Turn on the Pixel and wait for the carrier connection. If prompted, complete carrier activation.

Do not force a SIM into a tray or assume that a SIM from one region fits a model sold in another. Pixel 10 and later models sold in the United States omit the physical SIM tray.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

eSIM during setup

When the setup wizard offers mobile service, choose the eSIM option and follow the carrier’s verification steps. Activation may use a QR code, an in-app approval, or an automatic account transfer.

Add an eSIM after setup

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Network & internet.
  3. Tap SIMs.
  4. Choose Add SIM and follow the activation instructions.

Google’s eSIM setup guide explains the current flow. Automatic SIM transfer between Android devices has requirements, including Android 12 or later, current Google Play services, and screen locks configured on both phones; carrier support is still required. See Google’s SIM transfer instructions for carrier-dependent details.

Set up a Pixel without the old phone

You can use a Pixel without the previous device. During onboarding, skip the direct-device pairing option, connect to Wi‑Fi, and sign in to the Google Account that contains the backup.

  1. Choose Set up without an old device or the equivalent backup option shown on screen.
  2. Connect to Wi‑Fi.
  3. Sign in to the Google Account used on the old Android phone.
  4. Select the dated backup that matches the old device.
  5. Review the data categories and start restoration.
  6. Leave the Pixel connected to Wi‑Fi and power while apps and media finish downloading.

A cloud restore cannot recover information that was never included in the backup. Items stored only on the old phone, files in a computer folder, local-only photos, and app data without a backup must be moved by another method. Google’s backup restoration guide lists the current supported categories and conditions.

What may not transfer automatically

Direct transfer is broad but not identical to cloning a phone. Check these categories manually:

  • Google Pixel 7 has wide and ultrawide lenses with up to 8x Super Res Zoom[5]; and Cinematic Blur brings more drama to your videos
  • App-specific accounts: sign in again where an app does not restore its session.
  • Chat history: use the individual service’s backup and migration tools, especially for WhatsApp.
  • iCloud-only photos: download or migrate them separately before deleting the iPhone library.
  • Paid or unavailable apps: an Android version may not exist, and purchase licenses can be platform-specific.
  • Authenticator credentials: export or re-register accounts before wiping the old phone.
  • Downloads and hidden folders: inspect the Files app and cloud drives for documents that were outside the standard backup.
  • Device-specific settings: some manufacturer features, widgets, Bluetooth pairings, and home-screen arrangements do not have an equivalent on Pixel.

If the transfer fails or stops

Use this order so you do not accidentally erase the only copy of your data.

Connection or detection problems

  • Unlock both phones and keep their screens awake.
  • Confirm that both batteries have charge and that Wi‑Fi is connected to the same reliable network.
  • Restart both devices and retry the transfer.
  • For a cable transfer, try another data-capable USB‑C cable and remove hubs or damaged adapters.
  • Install pending system and Google Play services updates where the phone permits it.

Not enough storage

Check the Pixel’s free space before retrying. If the source contains more data than the Pixel can hold, deselect large videos or other categories, copy them separately to a computer or cloud service, and leave room for system updates.

Transfer interrupted after setup

On Pixel 9 and later, Google documents restoring after setup with Android Switch. Open the post-setup transfer option and follow its prompts rather than immediately factory-resetting the phone. On earlier devices, the available completion window and menus differ. If the only supported route is to start over, remember that a factory reset erases data already stored on the Pixel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For iPhone-specific connection failures, use Google’s transfer troubleshooting guide. It covers common cable, connection, and setup conditions without assuming that every carrier or iPhone model behaves the same way.

Verify the Pixel before retiring the old phone

  1. Place a test call and send a text message over the new SIM or eSIM.
  2. Open Contacts and search for several known entries.
  3. Open Google Photos and confirm recent photos and older albums are present.
  4. Check Messages, email, calendar, notes, and cloud-drive files.
  5. Open financial, work, and authenticator apps and complete any required sign-in or security approval.
  6. Pair essential accessories again, including a watch, car system, headphones, or medical device.
  7. Confirm that screen lock, fingerprint or face unlock, Find My Device, and automatic backup are enabled.

Only after these checks should you wipe, sell, recycle, or give away the old phone. Keep the old device available longer if an app’s migration window or an eSIM transfer is still pending.

Which setup method should you use?

Priority Best choice Reason Trade-off
Old phone available and network is strong Direct wireless transfer No special cable is needed and the wizard guides both devices. Performance depends on Wi‑Fi quality and data volume.
Large transfer or unreliable Wi‑Fi USB‑C cable transfer A direct wired connection avoids a weak wireless network. You need a compatible data cable or adapter.
Old phone unavailable but backup exists Google Account cloud restore Works without pairing the old device. Only backed-up data is available, and downloads continue after setup.
Switching from iPhone Google’s iPhone transfer flow plus separate iCloud and app migrations Combines the supported device copy with the extra steps Apple services require. iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud-only photos, and some app data need special handling.

There is no official benchmark showing that one route is universally faster. Choose based on whether the old phone is available, where your photos and app data are stored, the Pixel’s free space, your Wi‑Fi quality, and carrier support for SIM activation.

The Bottom Line

The safest Pixel setup is: back up first, keep both phones charged and unlocked, transfer directly by reliable Wi‑Fi or a USB‑C data cable when possible, and use a Google Account restore when the old phone is unavailable. Treat iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud-only photos, app-specific backups, eSIM activation, and carrier compatibility as separate checks before erasing the old device.
