How to Set Up a New Garmin Watch and Customize Its Essential Settings

Set up a new Garmin watch by completing its first-run prompts, pairing it from the Garmin Connect app—not from your phone’s Bluetooth menu—and then reviewing activities, display options, notifications, and syncing. The exact buttons and menu names depend on your model, so use the owner’s manual whenever your watch differs from the examples below.

What you need before setting up a Garmin watch

Have the watch, the phone you intend to use with it, and the watch’s charging cable available. Install or open Garmin Connect on the phone and sign in when prompted. Keep the watch and phone close together while pairing.

Garmin’s controls are not standardized across its entire range. Button layouts, touch-screen behavior, pairing menus, notification controls, activity favorites, and available sync methods can differ between models. The Instinct 2 and Instinct 2S Solar setup flow is a useful example, but it is not a universal button-by-button guide.

  • Use the owner’s manual for the exact model if a control mentioned here is missing.
  • Do not start by adding the watch in the phone’s system Bluetooth settings.
  • If you own more than one compatible Garmin activity-tracking device, plan to choose a Primary Wearable after pairing.

How do I set up a new Garmin watch?

1. Turn on the watch and follow the first-run prompts

Power on the watch and follow the on-screen setup sequence. Depending on the model, the initial flow can ask you to choose a language, pair the watch, set preferences, and enter user settings. On the Instinct 2/2S Solar example, pairing can be completed during this flow or skipped and done later through Garmin Connect.

Do not assume that a button shown in an Instinct guide will exist on a Venu, Forerunner, vívoactive, or another Garmin family. If the watch asks you to select a phone, Bluetooth, or connectivity option, leave that screen available while you open Garmin Connect.

2. Put the watch into pairing mode

The location of pairing mode varies. It may appear in a Phone, Bluetooth, or Connectivity menu, or as an option during first-run setup. Select the pairing option on the watch and keep its pairing screen visible.

3. Pair through Garmin Connect

In Garmin Connect, use this path:

  1. Open More.
  2. Select Garmin Devices.
  3. Tap Add Device.
  4. Choose the watch when it appears, or follow the app’s instructions to identify it.
  5. Confirm the pairing code on both devices if a code is displayed.

Garmin Support gives the reason for using this route: “To ensure a stable connection for notifications and syncing, you must pair your watch directly through the Garmin Connect™ app.” Pairing directly in the phone’s Bluetooth settings can leave the watch connected at the system level without completing the Garmin account, notification, and synchronization setup.

4. Finish the account and watch prompts

Continue through Garmin Connect and the watch until setup is complete. The prompts and available choices depend on the model. Review any requested user information carefully because those settings can affect the way the watch presents daily metrics and activity data.

If you skipped pairing during the watch’s first start, you do not need to reset it merely to pair later. Open the watch’s phone or connectivity menu, enter pairing mode, and use More → Garmin Devices → Add Device in Garmin Connect.

5. Confirm the first synchronization

After pairing, allow Garmin Connect to synchronize with the watch. A successful sync confirms that the app can communicate with the device; it does not mean every setting has been customized. Leave the app open long enough for the initial exchange to finish, especially if the watch has accumulated data before pairing.

How do I customize settings on my Garmin watch?

Make changes in small groups and synchronize after each group. This makes it easier to identify which setting produced an unexpected result. The available labels and paths differ by model, but activities, display behavior, and notifications are the most useful areas to review first.

Choose the activities you actually use

Open the watch’s activity list and add or arrange the profiles you expect to start from the watch. A shorter list makes the start button or activity menu faster to use and reduces the chance of selecting the wrong profile.

Garmin Support says some newer compatible watches can pin up to three favorite activities. That limit applies only to models that support the pinning feature; it is not a universal Garmin setting. If your watch does not offer pinned favorites, use its available reorder, favorite, or activity-list controls instead.

  • Keep frequently used profiles near the top of the list.
  • Remove or move profiles you rarely start so the activity menu stays easy to scan.
  • Check the profile name before recording; similar activities can have different data fields and tracking behavior.

Select a watch face and review display behavior

Watch-face selection is normally available from the watch’s display or appearance controls, although the exact path differs. Choose a face that shows the information you check most often, then review related display settings such as screen behavior, brightness, or timeout if those controls exist on your model.

A face can look correct in a preview but present different information during an activity. Check both the ordinary time screen and an activity profile after applying your choice. Touch-screen watches and button-operated watches may expose these controls in different places.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set notification behavior on both devices

Notifications are controlled by settings on the phone and on the watch. A notification permission or app choice on only one device may not produce the behavior you expect.

  1. In the phone’s operating-system settings, allow the notifications you want Garmin Connect and the watch to receive.
  2. In Garmin Connect, review the watch’s notification settings and any app or notification-category choices it presents.
  3. On the watch, review notification, alert, or phone controls and choose whether alerts are enabled in the situations your model supports.
  4. Send a test notification to confirm that the phone, Garmin Connect, and watch are all communicating.

Available controls vary by watch and phone platform. If a notification arrives on the phone but not the watch, check both sides rather than changing only the watch.

Review user and preference settings

Return to the user and preference choices entered during first-run setup. Correct anything that was entered hastily, and inspect the watch’s units, time, language, and related preference menus when those options are available. The exact settings and labels are model-specific, so the owner’s manual is the authority when the watch’s menu does not match a general description.

How to sync a Garmin watch

Garmin documents several synchronization routes, but compatibility is device-specific. Do not assume that a method available on one watch is available on another.

Sync route How it works Compatibility qualification
Garmin Connect The paired phone communicates wirelessly with the watch through the Garmin Connect app. Use this as the normal phone-based route when the watch supports Garmin Connect pairing.
Garmin Express over USB Connect the watch to a computer with USB and use Garmin Express. Garmin documents this for compatible devices; the cable and computer connection are not universal to every model.
Wi‑Fi A compatible watch can use a configured Wi‑Fi connection for supported synchronization tasks. Only models with the required Wi‑Fi support can use this path.

For a phone setup, confirm the Garmin Connect sync first. If you later use Garmin Express or Wi‑Fi, follow the instructions for the exact watch rather than treating those methods as interchangeable on every Garmin device.

What changes when you use more than one Garmin watch?

A single-watch owner can ignore the Primary Wearable setting. If you use multiple compatible activity-tracking devices, Garmin provides a Primary Wearable choice to resolve ties when devices record overlapping daily metrics.

Choose the device that should represent your day

In Garmin Connect, locate the device-management area and select the watch you want treated as the Primary Wearable. The exact label and location can vary with the app version and device combination. Choose the device you wear most consistently or the one you intend to represent your normal daily activity.

This setting addresses overlapping daily metrics; it is not a requirement for pairing a second watch. If you only own one compatible device, adding a Primary Wearable does not provide an additional setup benefit.

Model and phone differences to expect

Area What may differ What to do
Buttons and navigation Button names, shortcuts, touch gestures, and menu structure vary across watch families. Use the model’s owner’s manual for exact presses and swipe actions.
Pairing mode The option may be shown during first start or under Phone, Bluetooth, or Connectivity. Open the relevant menu on the watch, then add it in Garmin Connect.
Activity favorites Some newer compatible watches can pin up to three favorites; others offer different list controls. Use the controls your watch exposes and do not expect pinning on every model.
Notifications Phone permissions, Garmin Connect choices, and watch-side controls all affect delivery. Check the phone and watch together.
Synchronization App, USB, and Wi‑Fi routes depend on device compatibility. Verify supported methods in the model’s documentation.

Garmin watch setup troubleshooting

The watch does not appear in Garmin Connect

  1. Confirm that the watch is in its pairing mode rather than merely displaying the normal time screen.
  2. Keep the phone and watch close together.
  3. In Garmin Connect, return to More → Garmin Devices → Add Device and start the add-device flow again.
  4. If you previously paired the watch from the phone’s Bluetooth settings, remove that direct Bluetooth pairing according to the phone’s controls, then retry from Garmin Connect.
  5. Check the watch’s owner’s manual for the model-specific pairing path.

The pairing code is rejected or disappears

Leave the watch on its pairing screen and restart the add-device process in Garmin Connect. Confirm that the code shown on the phone matches the code on the watch before accepting it. If the watch exits pairing mode, reopen that mode and begin the code confirmation again.

The watch pairs but notifications do not arrive

Check notification permissions on the phone, notification choices in Garmin Connect, and notification or phone settings on the watch. A successful pairing alone does not guarantee that every phone notification category is enabled. Test with a new notification after each change.

The first sync does not finish

Keep Garmin Connect open with the watch nearby and retry the sync. If you are using a computer or Wi‑Fi instead, confirm that your model supports that route and follow its documented connection steps. Do not assume that a USB or Wi‑Fi option exists simply because another Garmin watch offers it.

Daily metrics are divided between two watches

When compatible devices overlap, select a Primary Wearable in Garmin Connect. This setting tells Garmin which device should resolve ties for overlapping daily metrics. It is relevant only when more than one compatible activity-tracking device is in use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical first-day checklist

  • Power on the watch and select the requested language and preferences.
  • Open Garmin Connect and use More → Garmin Devices → Add Device.
  • Put the watch into its model-specific pairing mode.
  • Confirm the pairing code if one appears.
  • Complete the remaining account and user-setting prompts.
  • Run the first wireless sync.
  • Add or reorder the activity profiles you use most.
  • Choose a watch face and review display behavior.
  • Check notification permissions on the phone, in Garmin Connect, and on the watch.
  • If you own multiple compatible devices, select a Primary Wearable.

When to consult the owner’s manual

Use the manual whenever a menu name, button sequence, activity control, or sync option does not match this guide. Garmin’s product families are sufficiently different that a generic instruction should not override the documentation for your exact model. The manual is also the right reference for model-specific features, supported phone connections, and recovery steps that are not common across the range.
