The correct setup sequence is: confirm a successful POST, install Windows only if your PC does not already have it, connect to the internet, run Windows Update, install drivers for the hardware you actually have from official sources, restart when prompted, and verify display, network, audio, and Device Manager. A prebuilt Windows PC usually starts at setup; a custom build without an operating system starts with a USB Windows installer.
Before pressing the power button
Do a short physical check before troubleshooting software. If a discrete graphics card is installed, connect the monitor to a video output on that graphics card, not to the motherboard’s video ports. The motherboard outputs may be inactive when the processor or board does not provide integrated graphics, or when firmware is configured to use the discrete card.

- Confirm the 24-pin motherboard power connector and the CPU power connector near the top of the board are fully seated.
- Confirm the graphics card’s supplemental power cables are connected when the card requires them.
- Connect the keyboard, mouse, and monitor securely. Select the correct monitor input.
- Connect the power supply to the wall and set its rear switch to the on position.
- Remove shipping material, protective film, or a packing insert that could obstruct a fan.
Turn the system on and watch for a successful POST (power-on self-test). The useful outcome is a firmware screen, a Windows installer, or the already-installed Windows setup. A brief delay, fan-speed change, or one or more automatic restarts can occur on a first boot while the system initializes memory. If there is no image, recheck the monitor cable and graphics-card power before changing firmware settings.

First boot: reach firmware or Windows
Enter firmware setup only when useful
To select a boot device or inspect hardware, enter the motherboard’s firmware setup or boot menu during startup. The key varies by motherboard. Delete is common and is used in illustrated gaming-PC workflows, but consult the motherboard manual when the on-screen prompt is unclear. Other boards may use a function key or display a temporary boot-menu key.
If you are installing Windows from USB, use the one-time boot menu when possible instead of permanently changing boot order. If the installer does not appear, restart, enter firmware, and confirm that the USB device is detected. For a clean installation, the USB installer should be first in the boot order and the destination drive second, as described in Intel’s build guidance.
Recognize a real first-boot failure
- No power: check the wall outlet, power-supply switch, front-panel connector, and main power cables.
- Power but no display: use the graphics-card output, verify the monitor input, reseat the graphics card, and check its power leads.
- Firmware screen appears: the core hardware has reached POST; proceed to the correct Windows path.
- Windows installer appears: the USB boot worked; continue with installation.
Install Windows on a DIY build only when it is absent
A custom PC with no operating system needs Windows installation media. Create the installer on another working computer, place it on a USB flash drive, connect it to the new PC, and select that USB device from the boot menu. Follow the installer’s prompts, choose the intended Windows edition, and select the drive on which Windows should be installed.
- Start the PC with the Windows installer USB connected.
- Open the temporary boot menu or firmware setup when prompted.
- Select the USB installer. If using firmware boot order, place USB first and the target drive second.
- Choose the language, region, keyboard layout, and Windows edition that matches your license.
- At the drive-selection screen, select the intended system drive. Deleting or formatting existing partitions erases their data, so verify the drive carefully.
- Allow the installer to copy files and restart. Remove the USB only when the system begins booting from the internal drive, or select the internal drive after the restart.
Do not repeat this process on a prebuilt computer merely because you want a “fresh” first boot. The installed Windows image, hardware drivers, recovery partition, and activation status may already be configured for that model.
Complete Windows setup and get connected
During Windows setup, connect to the internet when possible. Connectivity lets setup obtain current features, security fixes, and baseline drivers. A wired Ethernet connection is often the simplest route for a first setup.

If Wi-Fi is available
Select your wireless network, enter its password, and allow Windows to finish setup. If the wireless adapter is recognized but cannot connect, confirm the password and test the same network with another device before replacing drivers.
If Wi-Fi is missing from setup
Windows cannot use an adapter until its driver is present. On another computer, download the network adapter driver for the exact PC or motherboard model from the official support page. Copy the installer to a USB flash drive, connect that drive to the new PC, and run the driver installer. Microsoft’s setup guidance describes this transfer method for systems without Wi-Fi.

Do not guess at network hardware
Two boards with similar names can use different wireless or Ethernet controllers. Download the package for the exact system or motherboard revision and Windows version. A driver with a familiar brand name is not useful if that controller is not installed in your PC.
Run Windows Update before filling in driver gaps
After reaching the Windows desktop, open Settings > Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install the available updates, and restart when Windows requests it. Return to the same page after restarting and check again; a second pass can appear after the first update cycle.

Windows Update supplies a broad baseline of drivers, but it may not provide every model-specific package or the newest feature set for a particular component. Treat it as the foundation, not proof that every device is optimally identified.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Keep the PC connected to power during updates.
- Do not force a shutdown while an update is installing.
- Use Advanced options only when you understand why a preview or optional update is needed.
- Record any update error code before trying repairs; it is more useful than repeatedly clicking Check for updates.
Identify the hardware before downloading drivers
Driver selection is an exact-match task. Record the PC model and service tag for a prebuilt system, or the motherboard model and revision for a custom build. Also identify the processor platform, discrete graphics-card model, network adapters, and audio hardware.
Use Windows tools to confirm what is installed
- Open Settings > System > About to see the processor and Windows edition.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display to inspect available display modes after the graphics driver is installed.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and System devices.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an entry named Unknown device. Open its properties and inspect the hardware identifiers when the model is unclear.
Device Manager is a diagnostic inventory, not a reason to install every package listed on a motherboard support page. Install only drivers for hardware that is present or for a problem you can describe.
Install the drivers your hardware actually needs
| Hardware or function | Official source for a custom build | Official source for a prebuilt | When it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chipset and system devices | Motherboard maker or processor platform maker | PC maker’s model support page | Useful when Windows leaves system devices unidentified or the maker specifies a package. |
| Discrete graphics | Graphics-card or GPU maker | PC maker, or GPU maker when the PC maker directs you there | Needed for correct 3D acceleration, display features, and full resolution or refresh options. |
| Ethernet or Wi-Fi | Motherboard maker or network-controller maker | PC maker’s exact-model page | Needed when Windows cannot connect or Device Manager shows a missing adapter. |
| Audio | Motherboard maker | PC maker’s exact-model page | Needed for onboard audio features or when Windows has no usable playback device. |
| Special components | Component maker when the manual specifies it | PC maker first | Examples include a card reader, wireless module, storage controller, or vendor-specific hotkeys. |
Prebuilt PC procedure
- Find the exact model identifier on the chassis label, invoice, firmware page, or Windows system information.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page and select that model and your installed Windows version.
- Install only packages corresponding to missing devices or documented model requirements.
- Restart whenever the installer requests it, then check Device Manager again.
The manufacturer’s package can include custom power management, hotkeys, fan control, or a wireless module that a generic driver does not fully support.
Custom-build procedure
- Open the motherboard maker’s support page for the exact board and revision.
- Install the required chipset or system package if Windows or the board maker indicates one is needed.
- Install network and audio packages for the controllers actually fitted to the board.
- Download the graphics driver from the graphics-card or GPU maker’s official page for your GPU and Windows version.
- Restart and inspect Device Manager before adding optional utilities.
AMD package choices
AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool checks for compatible Radeon graphics, Ryzen chipsets, and the Windows version, then downloads supporting drivers. Its package choices label Recommended drivers as offering AMD’s best stability and Microsoft certification, while Optional drivers are newer and may include newer features and bug fixes. Those labels describe AMD’s own packaging; they are not a universal guarantee that one choice is best for every game or system. Use the exact product and Windows version shown by the installer.

Restart and verify the finished installation
Restart after any installer requests it. A restart allows services, kernel components, and hardware detection to load cleanly. Then perform a short functional check:
- Display: open Settings > System > Display and confirm the expected resolution. In Advanced display, verify that the monitor’s available refresh rate appears.
- Graphics: open Device Manager and confirm the discrete GPU is named correctly without a warning icon.
- Network: connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, open several reliable websites, and confirm that the connection survives a restart.
- Audio: select the intended output under Settings > System > Sound, play a test sound, and check the physical monitor or speaker volume.
- Device Manager: look for unknown devices, warning icons, or disabled adapters.
- Storage: open Settings > System > Storage and confirm that the expected system drive is visible with plausible free space.
If a device works and has no warning icon, do not install another package merely because a support page lists it. A longer driver list is not the goal; a correctly functioning, identifiable system is.

Open Settings > System > Activation. A first-time device or a different Windows edition may require a valid product key or digital license. The license and installed edition must match; a key for one edition does not activate another edition.
If Windows is not activated, follow the activation page’s troubleshooting prompts. Microsoft also provides a Store route to purchase a digital license after installation. Do not assume that a license key always comes in the box with a new computer, and do not enter a key from an unrelated machine.

Troubleshoot common first-day problems
The PC boots to firmware instead of Windows
Confirm that the internal drive appears in firmware. If it is absent, power down and check its data and power connections or its motherboard slot. If the drive appears but has no boot entry, the installation may not have completed; boot the Windows USB installer and repair or reinstall only after confirming the correct drive.
Windows starts at a very low resolution
Windows may be using a basic display driver. Confirm the graphics card model in Device Manager, install the exact graphics driver from the official source, and restart. Keep the monitor connected to the graphics card during this process.
There is no network adapter
Use another device to download the exact Ethernet or Wi-Fi driver, transfer it by USB, install it, and restart. If the adapter still does not appear, verify the motherboard model and revision and check whether a physical Wi-Fi antenna must be attached.
Audio is missing
Open Settings > System > Sound and choose the correct output. Check Device Manager for an audio warning, then install the board or PC maker’s audio package if required. HDMI or DisplayPort audio from a graphics card appears as a different output from the motherboard’s analog audio.
Windows Update keeps requesting another restart
Restart when requested, reconnect to the internet, and run Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates again. If an error persists, record its code and use Microsoft’s documented troubleshooting steps rather than installing unrelated driver tools.
Quick Recap
What not to make part of first boot
- BIOS flashing: perform it only for a stated compatibility, security, or stability reason, using the exact board file and instructions.
- Overclocking: postpone it until the unmodified system is stable and temperatures are understood.
- Every motherboard utility: install a utility only when you need the function it provides, such as a specific fan-control or firmware feature.
- Third-party driver-updater software: official Windows, PC-maker, motherboard-maker, GPU-maker, and processor-maker sources are sufficient for this setup.
- Repeated clean installs: do not erase a working prebuilt installation without a backup and a clear recovery plan.
A practical first-day checklist
- Connect the monitor to the discrete graphics card when one is installed.
- Power on and confirm a firmware screen, Windows installer, or Windows setup.
- Install Windows from USB only if the DIY system has no operating system.
- Complete Windows setup and connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- If networking is unavailable, transfer the exact network driver by USB.
- Run Windows Update, restart, and check again.
- Identify the exact PC, motherboard, processor platform, GPU, network, and audio hardware.
- Install only the remaining exact-hardware drivers from official sources.
- Restart as requested.
- Verify resolution and refresh options, network access, audio output, Device Manager, storage, and activation.
- Only after the baseline system works, consider optional tuning or vendor software for a specific purpose.
