How to Set Up a New Gaming Monitor for the Best Picture and Refresh Rate

To get the best picture and refresh rate from a new gaming monitor, first connect it through a port and cable supported by both the monitor and graphics card. Then set the monitor’s intended resolution and highest available refresh rate in Windows, check VRR, and enable HDR only for a display and content that support it. Finish by calibrating HDR visually and adjusting SDR brightness to suit your monitor and room.

1. Connect the monitor and confirm Windows sees it

Connect the monitor to a video output supported by both the monitor and your graphics card. Check the monitor manual and GPU specifications for the supported input and cable requirements at your target resolution, refresh rate, and HDR mode; a connector’s presence alone does not establish that every combination is supported.

In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the monitor you are setting up and note the resolution and refresh rate Windows reports. Menu wording can differ across Windows versions and devices. Microsoft’s refresh-rate guidance explains how to check these values.

2. Set the intended resolution and refresh rate

On the selected display’s Advanced display page, choose the highest refresh rate available while keeping your intended resolution. Refresh rate is the number of times a display updates its image per second; for example, Microsoft explains that a 60 Hz display updates 60 times per second.

  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.

Windows offers only combinations supported by the selected display, but check the resolution again after choosing a rate. Microsoft notes that rates marked with an asterisk do not support the current resolution; selecting one may change the resolution. A higher number is not an improvement if it causes the game to run below the resolution you want.

3. Check VRR and distinguish it from Dynamic Refresh Rate

Advanced display also indicates whether the selected monitor supports variable refresh rate (VRR). VRR lets a compatible display adapt its refresh to a game’s changing frame rate, and many popular games use VRR automatically when it is available. Check the monitor and game support as well as Windows’ display information; changing the fixed refresh-rate selection is not, by itself, a requirement for VRR to work.

  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Windows 11 Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) is a separate feature. Microsoft says it requires VRR and a display of at least 120 Hz. DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate in some games; if a game runs at a lower rate with DRR enabled, Microsoft suggests turning DRR off. See Microsoft’s explanation of refresh rate, VRR, and DRR.

4. Turn on HDR only for supported displays and content

HDR is not a universal picture-quality switch. Open Windows HDR settings for the display you intend to use and check the capabilities Windows reports. If the display and system support HDR, turn it on when playing HDR games or using HDR apps. For ordinary SDR content, the result depends on the display and its SDR-to-HDR brightness balance; HDR can look washed out or otherwise wrong if the settings do not suit your setup.

On some laptop setups with an external HDR display, HDR is unavailable while the screens are mirrored or duplicated. Microsoft recommends extending the displays for this use case. Microsoft’s HDR settings guide describes display capability checks and the SDR brightness control.

5. Calibrate HDR in Windows 11

Windows HDR Calibration is a visual workflow for setting the display’s visible dark-detail threshold, highlight-detail threshold, and maximum brightness. Use it with HDR turned on and the app full-screen on the HDR display. Perform the calibration under the room lighting in which you normally use the monitor; there is no single numeric brightness preset established for every monitor.

  1. Install and open Windows HDR Calibration on the HDR display with HDR enabled.
  2. Follow the first pattern to set the darkest detail that remains visible.
  3. Use the next patterns to set the brightest visible detail and the display’s maximum brightness.
  4. Adjust color saturation conservatively; excessive saturation can make the image look unnatural.

Microsoft says to run the app again whenever the display setup changes, such as when adding or replacing a display. Read Microsoft’s Windows HDR Calibration instructions.

6. Balance SDR brightness against HDR

For an external HDR monitor, Windows’ SDR content brightness control adjusts how bright SDR content appears relative to HDR. Its best setting varies by make and model. Start near the default, then adjust while viewing familiar SDR and HDR content in the lighting you normally use. If an app does not respond to the slider, restart that app and check again.

VESA identifies a colorimeter or spectroradiometer as optional equipment for measuring the difference between SDR and HDR white levels. That measurement approach is not required for the visual calibration steps above. Microsoft’s HDR settings guide covers the Windows brightness control; VESA’s DisplayHDR performance criteria describe the measurement equipment.

7. Troubleshoot HDR color fringing over HDMI

If you encounter the specific HDR color-fringing issue described by Microsoft, update your graphics drivers first. If you are using HDMI and both the monitor and graphics card support HDR over DisplayPort, try that connection and confirm the cable meets their requirements. If HDMI is the only available option, Microsoft lists reducing the refresh rate or resolution as troubleshooting measures. These are remedies for that color issue, not preferred settings for normal gaming.

Microsoft’s HDR troubleshooting guidance addresses the HDMI color-fringing case. A DisplayPort cable is relevant only when both ends support the connection and it meets the exact monitor and GPU requirements.
