For the best results from a new gaming laptop, complete Windows and manufacturer updates first, connect the supplied AC adapter, choose an appropriate performance profile, confirm that demanding games use the discrete GPU, remove only unnecessary background load, and then tune each game one setting at a time. Performance modes, GPU switching, cooling controls and available firmware options vary by model, so use your laptop maker’s instructions for model-specific features.

What to do before installing games

Finish the initial Windows setup while the laptop is connected to reliable power. Sign in, create recovery options when Windows offers them, and let Windows Update complete its restart cycle before judging performance. A new laptop can receive several rounds of operating-system, security and hardware updates.

Use a supported Windows edition

Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a new gaming laptop should normally be running a supported Windows release, generally Windows 11 on recently sold hardware. Check Settings > System > About for the edition and version, then install all available updates. If the computer cannot run a supported release, check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance before relying on it for long-term gaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Complete Windows Update

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates and install everything offered.
  3. Restart when requested, return to Windows Update, and check again until no additional restart is pending.
  4. Open Advanced options > Optional updates. Review optional driver updates rather than installing every item automatically; use them when they clearly match your hardware or resolve a known problem.

Windows updates commonly include reliability, compatibility and performance fixes. A game should not be used as the first test of a system that still has pending operating-system updates.

Install drivers and firmware only from official support channels

Open the laptop maker’s official support utility, or visit the support page for the exact model number printed on the chassis or shown in Settings > System > About. Install the manufacturer’s recommended chipset, graphics, network, audio and system-control packages when applicable. Avoid third-party driver-download sites, which can provide the wrong package or an altered installer.

Firmware and BIOS updates need extra care. They are model-specific, can change power or fan behavior, and an interrupted update can leave a system unusable. Do not apply a generic BIOS procedure from another model. Read the exact manufacturer instructions, keep the supplied AC adapter connected, and do not interrupt the process.

Set power for the way you play

Power settings affect CPU and GPU limits, fan behavior, battery runtime and heat. For demanding games, connect the supplied AC adapter before launching the game. ASUS support documentation specifically recommends AC power to provide sufficient performance and keep the CPU and GPU at high frequencies during play. Battery operation can impose lower limits even when a game appears to be configured correctly.

Choose a Windows power mode

  1. Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Under Power mode, choose Best performance when maximum plugged-in performance is the priority.
  3. Choose Balanced for ordinary work, light gaming or a compromise between speed and battery use.

Microsoft describes Best performance as maximizing performance, but warns that it can use more power and raise operating temperature. On battery, the same setting can drain the battery faster. There is no universally correct choice: compare performance, heat, fan noise and runtime for your own use.

Use the manufacturer’s performance utility

Many gaming laptops include an OEM utility that controls CPU/GPU limits, fan curves, lighting and charging behavior. Mode names and availability differ by model. ASUS Armoury Crate, for example, may provide Silent, Performance and Turbo profiles; Turbo is restricted to AC operation on supported systems. Another manufacturer may use different labels or omit some modes.

Open the utility supplied for your exact laptop and read what each profile changes. A practical starting point is:

Use case Typical profile choice Trade-offs to watch
Demanding game while plugged in Performance or the model’s highest supported profile More fan noise, power use and heat
Quiet work, streaming or light games Balanced, Standard or Silent Lower power and noise, potentially lower sustained performance
Gaming away from an outlet Balanced or battery-focused mode Shorter high-performance sessions and possible frequency limits

Do not assume the highest label is always best. If the laptop reaches a thermal limit and reduces clock speeds, a quieter profile may deliver steadier behavior. Test profiles in the same game scene rather than comparing unrelated sessions.

Make sure games use the discrete GPU

A gaming laptop may contain an integrated GPU in the processor and a separate, more powerful discrete GPU. The integrated chip saves battery, while the discrete chip is normally intended for demanding games. Hybrid-graphics behavior, MUX switches and display routing are model-dependent.

Set a per-game preference in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Find the game in the list. If it is missing, select Browse and choose the game’s executable file.
  3. Select the game, choose Options, select High performance when that option identifies the discrete GPU, and save.
  4. Restart the game after changing the preference.

ASUS notes that Windows per-application graphics preferences can take priority over settings in a GPU vendor’s control panel. Therefore, check Windows Graphics settings instead of relying only on NVIDIA or AMD software. The exact labels can differ, and some laptops expose additional choices through the OEM utility.

Understand discrete-only and MUX options

A discrete-only or MUX mode can route the display directly through the discrete GPU and may improve game performance or latency on systems that support it. It also increases battery use and may require a restart. Do not enable it universally: if you mostly work on battery, use the hybrid setting and switch modes only when the benefit matters. If an external display is connected, its port may use a different GPU path; consult the model manual before drawing conclusions from one screen.

Reduce background load without breaking Windows

New laptops often ship with launchers, update agents and trial applications. Some are useful; others consume memory, CPU time, network bandwidth or storage. Remove or disable only what you recognize.

Review applications that start with Windows

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Sort by Startup impact and inspect each entry’s publisher and purpose.
  4. Right-click a nonessential application you recognize and choose Disable. Leave security software, touchpad utilities, audio controls and hardware-management components enabled unless the manufacturer documents another approach.

Disabling startup does not uninstall an application; it prevents automatic launch. You can re-enable an item from the same page if a feature stops working.

Find what is consuming resources now

In Task Manager’s Processes view, sort by CPU, Memory, Disk or Network. Close an application only when you know what it is and no work is being saved. A browser with many tabs, a cloud-sync client, a game launcher downloading an update or a video encoder can all compete with a game. Investigate repeated high usage instead of killing unfamiliar system processes.

Remove unused programs through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, but do not use blanket “debloating” scripts or disable security protections to chase an unmeasured gain. Microsoft recommends resource monitoring to identify heavy processes and warns that startup applications can slow boot and increase background activity.

Keep enough storage free

When a system drive is nearly full, Windows and games have less room for updates, shader caches and temporary files. Use Settings > System > Storage to identify large files and uninstall games you no longer play. This is a capacity and maintenance step, not a guaranteed FPS improvement. Routine SSD defragmenting should not be treated as a universal gaming tweak; use Windows’ normal drive-optimization behavior instead of forcing third-party defragmentation.

Configure the display before tuning graphics

Open Settings > System > Display and confirm that Windows recognizes the laptop panel at its supported resolution and refresh rate. If the model offers multiple refresh rates, select the one you intend to use for games. The available choices depend on the panel, GPU routing, power mode and sometimes whether the laptop is on AC power.

In each game, start with the game’s recommended or default preset. Confirm that the game is running at the panel’s native resolution unless you deliberately choose a lower one for performance. Use an in-game frame-rate cap when you want steadier temperatures, lower fan noise or a frame rate matched to the display; the useful cap depends on the panel and game.

Tune each game one setting at a time

There is no universal FPS gain from a particular setting. Results depend on the game engine, resolution, GPU, CPU, memory and display. Make one change, reproduce the same scene or benchmark, and record whether frame rate, frame-time consistency and responsiveness improve.

A repeatable tuning procedure

  1. Connect AC power and select the intended Windows and OEM performance profiles.
  2. Launch the game and let shaders or first-run compilation finish.
  3. Play the same area for several minutes, noting average smoothness and obvious stutter rather than relying on one instant reading.
  4. If performance is below your target, lower the render resolution one step or reduce the most demanding graphics option.
  5. Apply only that change, replay the same scene, and compare.
  6. Keep the change only if the visual compromise is acceptable. Continue with the next setting if necessary.

Which settings usually deserve attention first?

  • Resolution or render scale: lowering it reduces the number of pixels the GPU must render, but makes the image softer.
  • Ray tracing: often imposes a substantial GPU workload; disable or reduce it when image effects are less important than responsiveness.
  • Shadows, reflections and volumetric effects: these can be costly in scenes with many lights, objects or atmospheric effects.
  • Texture quality: this primarily affects video-memory use. Lower it when the game reports memory pressure or produces texture-related stutter, not automatically on every system.
  • View distance and crowd density: these can increase CPU work in open-world or simulation-heavy games.
  • Upscaling or dynamic resolution: use the options the game supports, checking image stability and latency as well as frame rate.

Keep a simple note of the game, resolution, preset and changed setting. That makes it easier to restore a known-good configuration after a driver or game update.

Manage heat and airflow safely

Use the laptop on a hard, stable surface and keep every intake and exhaust opening unobstructed. Do not place it on bedding, a sofa or a surface that can seal the underside vents. The manufacturer’s manual is the authority for clearance and operating position.

Performance profiles can deliberately increase fan speed or change cooling behavior. ASUS documents that its supported profiles alter cooling along with CPU and GPU performance. More performance can therefore mean more noise and heat. If temperatures rise while clock speeds fall, compare a lower profile, a frame-rate cap or less demanding graphics settings rather than forcing the highest mode continuously.

Should you buy a cooling pad?

A stand or cooling pad is optional, not a required first setup step. Before buying, check the laptop’s dimensions, weight, underside vent locations, USB requirements, portability and the accessory’s noise. A pad that blocks the intake or does not align with the chassis can be counterproductive. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal temperature or FPS benefit for third-party cooling pads, so treat any improvement as model-specific and verify it yourself.

Troubleshoot performance problems in a fixed order

The game runs on the wrong GPU

  • Check Settings > System > Display > Graphics and set the game to High performance when available.
  • Confirm the OEM utility is not forcing an energy-saving or integrated-only mode.
  • Restart the game after changing the preference.
  • If an external monitor is involved, check the model’s display-routing documentation.

Performance is low immediately after setup

  • Finish Windows Update and the manufacturer’s driver updates.
  • Connect AC power and select the intended performance profile.
  • Check Task Manager for downloads, updates, scans or other heavy processes.
  • Verify the game is not still compiling shaders or installing content.

Performance starts well and then falls

  • Check whether the laptop is overheating or switching to a lower power profile.
  • Move it to a hard surface and clear blocked vents.
  • Try a frame-rate cap or a less aggressive OEM profile to reduce sustained heat.
  • Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic tools and support instructions if the behavior persists.

The laptop is noisy or hot in ordinary work

  • Check Windows Power mode and the OEM profile; Best performance is not necessary for browsing or documents.
  • Use Task Manager to identify a process consuming CPU, memory or disk resources.
  • Install pending official updates, then retest.
  • If temperatures remain abnormal at idle, contact the manufacturer rather than disabling safety controls.

A practical first-week checklist

  • Windows setup, activation and recovery options completed.
  • Windows Update repeated until no further restart is pending.
  • Exact-model drivers and any needed firmware installed from official support channels.
  • AC adapter tested and a suitable Windows power mode selected.
  • OEM performance utility reviewed, with the mode choice recorded for gaming and battery use.
  • Each demanding game assigned to the discrete GPU where supported.
  • Startup apps and current processes reviewed in Task Manager.
  • Unused software removed carefully and adequate storage space preserved.
  • Display resolution and refresh rate checked in Windows and in each game.
  • Game settings tuned one change at a time using a repeatable scene.
  • Vents kept clear and the laptop used on a suitable surface.

Once these steps are complete, further changes should have a specific purpose: solve a measured performance problem, reduce heat or noise, extend battery life, or improve image quality. Because firmware, GPU switching, cooling design and utility features differ across laptops, the exact model manual remains more reliable than a universal “gaming optimization” preset.
