The safest setup order is: finish Windows setup with an internet connection, run Windows Update until it is clear, inspect Device Manager, then use the laptop maker’s exact support page for any remaining drivers, firmware, or utilities. Install graphics software only for the GPU and Windows version you actually have, and treat BIOS updates as model-specific maintenance—not an automatic first-day task.
Before you turn on the laptop
A gaming laptop is not one standardized platform. Two machines with similar names can use different processors, wireless adapters, graphics arrangements, firmware, and Windows editions. Gather the information that determines which downloads apply before installing anything.

Record the exact model
Find the full model name and product number on the chassis label, packaging, purchase record, or the manufacturer’s system-information screen. A family name alone is often insufficient. Support pages may separate models by screen size, processor, graphics chip, regional version, or hardware revision.
- Write down the exact model or product number.
- Note whether the laptop shipped with Windows 10 or Windows 11 and whether the edition is Home or Pro.
- Keep the charger connected during setup and any firmware operation.
- Have access to another internet-connected device in case the laptop’s network adapter needs a driver.
Do not download a package simply because its file name resembles your laptop’s name. Confirm the model identifier and the supported Windows version on the official support page first.

Complete Windows first-run setup
Follow the on-screen prompts for region, keyboard layout, network, account, and privacy choices. Microsoft says internet access during setup helps the device receive current features, security updates, and drivers. Internet access is required to finish setup for Windows Home and Pro editions.
Connect to the internet when possible
Use the laptop’s Wi-Fi or a wired connection if available. Staying online lets Windows obtain its initial updates and gives you access to the manufacturer’s support page. If Wi-Fi is not available because the adapter lacks a driver, use another device to download the compatible network-driver package from the laptop maker’s official site. Transfer it with removable storage, install it, and then reconnect the laptop so Windows can continue updating.
Review the setup choices deliberately
The first-run screens establish the machine’s region, keyboard behavior, account, network connection, and privacy permissions. Read each screen rather than accepting an unfamiliar option blindly. These choices affect how Windows identifies the device and which services are enabled, but they do not replace driver installation or Windows Update.

Run Windows Update in a complete cycle
Windows Update should be your first driver source after the initial desktop appears. Open Settings, choose Windows Update, select Check for updates, install what Windows offers, and restart when prompted. After the restart, return to Windows Update and check again. A second pass matters because one update can make another applicable.
Understand recommended versus optional drivers
Microsoft’s Windows guidance distinguishes between recommended driver updates, which Windows Update installs automatically, and optional driver updates, which you can review and select manually. An optional entry is not automatically a missing requirement.

Do not assume that installing every optional item is safer. If an optional package is unrelated to a device in your laptop, leave it unselected until the manufacturer or Microsoft documentation gives you a reason to use it.
Know when the update cycle is finished
There is no universal number of restarts. The practical stopping point is a Windows Update screen with no remaining required updates, followed by a restart if Windows requested one. If the list changes after a restart, install the newly offered items and check again.
Inspect Device Manager for unresolved hardware
After Windows Update, open Device Manager and scan the device tree for warning icons, an Unknown device entry, or a component that Windows reports as having no driver. This check tells you whether the basic Windows package covered all of the laptop’s hardware.
Use the hardware identity to choose the next source
If a device still lacks a compatible driver, start with the laptop manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model. Microsoft specifically advises checking the computer or device maker when Windows Update cannot find a needed compatible driver and warns against downloading drivers from unofficial sites.
Do not use a third-party “driver updater” to fill gaps. Such tools are not part of Microsoft’s recommended path and can offer packages that do not match the laptop’s hardware revision or Windows edition.

Install one relevant package at a time when possible, restart if requested, and return to Device Manager. Confirm that the warning has disappeared and that the device is identified correctly. If the warning remains, the package may be for a different model, operating-system version, or component; return to the exact support page rather than trying a random download.

Use the laptop maker’s support page as the model-specific authority
Once Windows Update has completed, open the manufacturer’s support page and enter the exact model or product number. Review the listed drivers, firmware, BIOS files, and utilities for your Windows version. Follow any instructions attached to that model instead of applying a generic “gaming laptop” checklist.
Why model-specific instructions differ
Manufacturers can require a particular order or prerequisite. MSI publishes notebook driver-installation order guidance, while Intel documents a BIOS prerequisite for one specific laptop kit. Those documents demonstrate that sequencing can vary; they do not establish a universal order for every laptop.
If the manufacturer publishes an order, use it. If it does not, Windows Update remains the baseline, followed by only the model-specific packages needed to resolve a device issue or satisfy a documented requirement.

If two instructions disagree, the one tied to the exact model and a documented prerequisite normally carries more weight than a general recommendation. When neither page resolves the conflict, use the laptop maker’s support channel rather than guessing.
Install graphics software only for the hardware you have
First determine the laptop’s graphics arrangement. It may use NVIDIA graphics, AMD Radeon graphics, Intel graphics, or integrated and discrete GPUs together. Windows’ display information and Device Manager can help you identify the names; the laptop’s specification page is another confirmation.
Choose between the laptop package and the GPU vendor package
Use the laptop maker’s validated graphics package when its support page provides one, especially when the system uses switchable graphics or model-specific power controls. If you use a component vendor’s package, follow that vendor’s compatibility requirements and installation instructions exactly.
Do not install AMD software on a laptop merely because it is a gaming machine. AMD’s documented Adrenalin guidance applies to supported Radeon hardware and lists Windows 11 version 21H2 and later, or Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later, for the compatible systems described on that page.
Read version-sensitive AMD requirements correctly
The cited AMD instructions describe Adrenalin 26.1.1 and use an RX 9070 as an example. Those details identify the software and hardware context of that guidance; they are not a blanket requirement for every Radeon laptop. Check the current compatibility text on the official AMD support page before choosing a package.
For a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics, verify that the package supports the complete arrangement. Installing a desktop-oriented package or software for the wrong GPU can leave the system with an unresolved device or remove model-specific behavior supplied by the laptop maker.
Treat BIOS updates as targeted maintenance
A BIOS update is not an automatic first-day task for every new gaming laptop. Open the exact model’s support page and look for a documented fix, security reason, compatibility requirement, or prerequisite that applies to your machine. If none applies, do not flash firmware simply because a newer file exists.
The Intel example is deliberately narrow
Intel’s guidance for the NUC M15 Laptop Kit (LAPBCx10) says the system should be on BIOS 0071 or newer before a Windows 11 upgrade. That requirement belongs to that named product. It does not mean every gaming laptop must reach BIOS 0071, or that every new laptop needs a BIOS update before normal use.

- Confirm the exact product identifier and BIOS file on the manufacturer’s page.
- Read the prerequisite and recovery instructions for that model.
- Keep the charger connected and do not interrupt the process.
- Use the update method the manufacturer specifies; do not substitute a file for another model.
If the page does not clearly connect the BIOS release to your model or a problem you are trying to solve, postpone the update and contact the manufacturer for clarification.

Essential settings to verify after updates
The most important day-one settings are the ones that keep setup, updating, and recovery predictable. They are less about applying a universal “gaming tweak” and more about confirming that Windows and the laptop’s support tools recognize the hardware correctly.
Network and account
Confirm that the laptop reconnects to the intended Wi-Fi network after a restart and that you can sign in to the account created during setup. If network access disappears after a driver change, return to the laptop maker’s network-driver package rather than downloading a replacement from an unofficial site.
Windows Update status
Reopen Windows Update after the final restart. Check that no required update is waiting and that optional drivers remain a deliberate choice rather than an accidental bulk installation.

Privacy choices
Revisit the privacy settings selected during first-run setup if a choice was made quickly. Change only the permissions you understand; privacy settings do not substitute for a missing driver, BIOS requirement, or graphics package.
Device recognition
Keep Device Manager free of unresolved warning entries. A laptop can boot and launch applications while still missing a card reader, wireless component, sensor, or other device, so this check is more reliable than judging setup by whether the desktop appears.
Troubleshooting branches
Windows setup cannot get online
- Check whether the wireless network is visible and whether another device can use it.
- If the adapter is not detected, identify the laptop’s exact model on another device.
- Download the network driver from the laptop maker’s official support page for that model and Windows version.
- Transfer and install the package, reconnect, and then run Windows Update.
Do not treat the inability to connect as evidence that a random driver site is safe. Microsoft’s guidance points to the manufacturer’s site when Windows cannot supply a compatible driver.
Windows Update reports no driver, but Device Manager shows a warning
Record the device name and hardware identity shown by Device Manager, then search the exact model’s official support page. Compare the package’s Windows version and hardware description. If no compatible package is listed, ask the manufacturer for the correct one instead of forcing an unrelated driver.
A graphics installer refuses to run
Confirm the GPU brand and model, Windows edition and version, and whether the laptop uses integrated and discrete graphics. Recheck the laptop maker’s validated package before trying the component vendor’s software. AMD’s stated operating-system requirements, for example, apply only to supported Radeon systems and the versions listed in its documentation.
You are unsure whether to install a BIOS update
Look for a model-specific requirement, fix, or prerequisite. If the only evidence is that a newer BIOS exists, that alone is not a reason to update. The Intel NUC M15 requirement illustrates why the product name and intended Windows upgrade must both match.
Updates keep appearing after every restart
Allow Windows Update to complete the requested restart, then check again. If the same item repeatedly fails or returns, note its name and version and consult the laptop maker’s support page. Avoid switching to third-party driver tools as a workaround.
A practical first-day checklist
- Exact model and product number recorded.
- Windows region, keyboard, account, network, and privacy prompts completed.
- Internet connected, or the official network driver obtained using another device.
- Windows Update run, restarted, and checked again.
- Optional drivers reviewed individually rather than installed indiscriminately.
- Device Manager checked for warning icons and unknown devices.
- Manufacturer support page reviewed for this exact model.
- Graphics hardware identified before graphics software was selected.
- BIOS left unchanged unless a model-specific instruction or relevant fix requires it.
This sequence gives Windows the opportunity to provide its own recommended drivers, then uses the laptop maker’s documentation for the cases Windows cannot resolve. It also keeps optional software, graphics packages, and firmware tied to the hardware and operating-system conditions for which they were published.
