The safest setup order is: decide who owns and manages the tablet, prepare Wi‑Fi, power and account credentials, complete the manufacturer’s first-run wizard, transfer only the data you need, install updates, then enroll the work account using your employer’s required method. A personally owned tablet normally uses an Android Work Profile to separate business apps and data; a company-owned tablet may be fully managed and subject to device-wide restrictions.
Exact prompts differ by manufacturer, Android version and your employer’s enterprise-management policy. The detailed cable, Wi‑Fi and cloud-transfer screens documented by Google are for Pixel Tablet, so use them as a model rather than assuming every Android tablet has identical menus.

Decide whether the tablet is personal or company-owned
Ownership determines what your employer can configure, which enrollment path appears and where work data is stored. Establish this before adding accounts or copying data.

| Personally owned (BYOD) with Work Profile | You own the tablet and add a separate work environment. | Work apps and work-profile data are separated from personal apps and data. | Your employer manages the work profile and may enforce selected device requirements; personal data is not visible to the organization according to Google’s Work Profile guidance. |
| Company-owned, fully managed | Your employer supplies or purchases the tablet for work. | The organization can manage work apps, accounts and broader device behavior. | The employer’s management system can apply device-wide restrictions, compliance checks and reset policies. |
| Company-owned with a managed work/personal arrangement | The organization permits limited personal use on a managed tablet. | Boundaries depend on the configuration chosen by the employer. | Read the employer’s policy; the same model can expose different controls under different management settings. |
Android Enterprise describes Work Profiles as a way to separate and secure work apps and data from personal use, particularly for BYOD deployments. Availability and behavior vary by Android version and the employer’s enterprise-mobility-management (EMM) solution.

Ask IT before turning on a company device
Find out whether the tablet is already registered for Android zero-touch enrollment, which account you must use, and whether a device-policy-controller app is required. A zero-touch device can receive company apps and policies during setup. Factory-resetting it does not remove that registration; the organization must unregister the device. Do not attempt to bypass an enrollment screen.
Prepare the tablet, old device and accounts
- Charge the new tablet and the old phone or tablet. Keep both powered during a long transfer.
- Confirm access to a reliable Wi‑Fi network. Google’s Pixel Tablet preparation guidance specifically calls for a strong connection.
- Have the personal Google Account credentials you intend to use, plus any employer-provided sign-in, enrollment code or multifactor-authentication method.
- Unlock the old device and update it if your employer requires a minimum Android version or security patch.
- Locate important files, downloads and app-specific credentials before migration. A transfer is not guaranteed to copy every item.
- If using a cable, check that both devices have compatible connectors and support data transfer, not merely charging. A USB-C data cable is a possible option when both devices support it; no single cable works for every model.
If IT supplied a setup sequence, follow it instead of creating a personal profile first. Some managed deployments expect enrollment during the initial wizard and may require a particular account order.
Complete the first-run Android setup
- Power on and select the basics. Choose language, region and accessibility options shown by the tablet. Labels vary by manufacturer.
- Join Wi‑Fi. Use the network you will keep available while the tablet checks for updates and downloads management components.
- Read the ownership or management prompt. A company-owned or pre-registered tablet may display your employer’s enrollment screen. Continue through the required flow; do not reset repeatedly to avoid it.
- Sign in with the intended account. For a personal tablet, this is normally your personal Google Account unless your employer instructs a different order. For a managed tablet, use the account and credentials supplied by IT.
- Choose copy or start fresh. Select a transfer method if you have an old device and want data copied. Starting fresh is appropriate when the tablet is company-owned and policy prohibits personal migration.
- Set a screen lock. Choose the method allowed by the tablet and employer policy. A management system may require a stronger lock or a shorter timeout.
- Finish Google services and backup prompts. Review each option rather than accepting settings that conflict with your employer’s rules or your privacy needs.
Do not treat the screen names in a Pixel Tablet walkthrough as universal. Samsung, Lenovo and other manufacturers can place the same choices under different labels.

Transfer personal data deliberately
Google documents three consumer routes for Pixel Tablet: a cable, a direct Wi‑Fi transfer and restoration from a Google Account backup. The available choices on another brand depend on its software and the source device.
| Method | Best when | What may transfer | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cable | Both devices are nearby, charged and have compatible data ports. | Google lists photos, videos, contacts saved on the device, apps and some app data, wallpaper and widgets as items that may transfer to Pixel Tablet. | Requires a compatible data cable. The transfer is not a complete clone; unsupported app data, downloads and some settings may remain behind. |
| Wi‑Fi device-to-device | You have a strong local connection and no suitable cable. | Uses the same categories offered by the tablet’s transfer wizard when supported. | Prompts and supported categories differ by manufacturer. Keep both devices nearby and unlocked until it finishes. |
| Google Account backup | The old device is unavailable or you prefer a cloud restore. | Restores the content included in the available backup for that account and device. | It does not guarantee downloads, non-Google accounts, app data from apps that do not use Android backup, or every device setting. |
Check what did not copy
After setup, open your file manager and verify critical documents, photos and downloads. Launch important apps and complete any sign-in or verification they request. Google specifically warns that some downloads, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts and certain settings may not copy automatically to Pixel Tablet. Treat the old device as the source of truth until you have checked the items you cannot replace.
Do not assume work data can be restored
Fully managed-device transfer has an additional condition: Google says the old and new devices must use the same managed Google Account and the same EMM. Transfer is blocked by default to protect corporate data unless the EMM administrator enables backup services. If a work tablet does not restore business apps or data, stop repeated resets and ask IT whether the organization permits migration.

Install updates before adding a full app load
- Open the tablet’s system-update screen and install available Android and security updates.
- Restart when prompted, then check again; a major update can reveal a second patch.
- Open Google Play and update preinstalled apps.
- Wait for required management components to finish before installing optional personal apps on a managed device.
On a company-owned tablet, an administrator may defer, force or restrict updates. If an update button is unavailable, the device policy—not a fault in your tablet—may be controlling it.

Add work access using the method your employer specifies
Android Enterprise uses an EMM and a device-policy controller to apply restrictions and check compliance. Your employer may direct you to install a management app, approve a work account, scan an enrollment code or accept a Work Profile. Use the named app and instructions from IT; installing a random policy-controller app can enroll the tablet incorrectly.
Personally owned tablet: create or add the Work Profile
- Open the account or work-setup area named in your employer’s instructions. On many Android versions this begins in Settings and an account, security or work-profile section, but the exact path varies.
- Enter the work email address or follow the organization’s enrollment link or code.
- Install or allow the organization’s device-policy-controller app when prompted.
- Accept the Work Profile terms and required security settings.
- Wait for work apps to appear with a briefcase badge or in a managed Google Play area.
- Open a work app and complete multifactor authentication. Keep personal and work copies of apps distinct when both are installed.
A Work Profile does not make every aspect of the tablet private from every possible control. Google’s guidance says personal apps and data are not visible to the organization, while work-profile apps and data can be managed. Your employer may also require selected device settings. Read the organization’s privacy notice for the actual configuration.

Company-owned tablet: complete full management
- Continue through the zero-touch or setup enrollment screen if it appears.
- Sign in with the managed account supplied by IT, not a personal account unless the policy explicitly allows one.
- Install or activate the required device-policy-controller and accept the management terms.
- Allow the EMM to apply required apps, certificates, network settings, screen-lock rules and compliance checks.
- Wait for the administrator’s approved apps to finish installing before judging that setup is incomplete.
On devices without a separate Work Profile, Android Enterprise can provide approved work apps through the managed account and Google Play, with the organization’s policy controller enforcing the configuration.
Understand what your employer can see and control
| Area | Personal tablet with Work Profile | Company-owned managed tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Personal apps and files | Google says they are not visible to the organization through the Work Profile. | Personal use, if permitted, is subject to the company’s device configuration and policy. |
| Work apps and data | Managed inside the Work Profile; the organization can enforce work-app requirements. | Managed by the EMM and may be controlled across the entire device. |
| Security settings | Some requirements, such as a screen lock, can be enforced. | Device-wide restrictions, network settings and compliance rules may be enforced. |
| Reset or removal | The organization can remove the Work Profile under its policy. | The organization may authorize or trigger a full device reset. |
These boundaries are policy-dependent. Ask IT whether it can see work-profile inventory, enforce a camera or screenshot restriction, remotely remove work data, or reset the device. Do not infer capabilities from another employer’s tablet.
Finish personal setup without mixing work and private data
- Install personal apps from the regular Google Play experience and work apps from managed Play or the route IT provided.
- Check that work apps carry the work badge and that personal apps remain outside the Work Profile.
- Sign in again to services that did not transfer. Password managers, banking apps and authenticator apps commonly require fresh verification.
- Open the backup settings and confirm the account and scope you intend to use. A company policy may restrict backup or require an administrator-controlled service.
- Review notification previews, clipboard behavior and file-sharing settings so sensitive work content is not exposed in personal contexts.
- Pair accessories only after confirming the tablet model and supported connection method. A model-compatible keyboard case can be useful for work, but compatibility must be checked for the exact tablet.
Verify the setup with two checklists
Personal-use checklist
- Wi‑Fi reconnects after a restart.
- Photos, contacts, documents and downloads you care about are present.
- Critical apps open and have current sign-ins.
- Screen lock, backup account and recovery methods are correct.
- Bluetooth, audio, cameras and any keyboard or stylus work as expected.
Work-use checklist
- The required Work Profile or fully managed status appears in Settings.
- Work apps have installed from the approved source.
- Multifactor authentication and required certificates or VPN settings work.
- The device reports as compliant in the management app.
- You know how to contact IT before deleting a profile, resetting the tablet or changing security settings.
Troubleshoot the most common setup failures
The tablet cannot find the old device
Keep both devices unlocked, nearby and charged. Confirm Wi‑Fi is enabled, restart the transfer, and try the alternate route offered by the wizard. If using a cable, test a known data-capable cable and verify that both ports support the required connection.

Apps transferred but their data is missing
Sign in to the app and check its own restore or sync option. Android backup is app-dependent; data from apps that do not use it, downloads and non-Google accounts may not copy. Retrieve irreplaceable files from the old device or the service that stores them.
The Work Profile will not create
Check that the tablet is running a supported Android version, that you used the enrollment method supplied by IT and that the device has internet access. A device already assigned to another organization, or one at its enrollment limit, must be corrected by the administrator.
The company tablet keeps returning to enrollment
That behavior can be expected for a zero-touch-registered device. A reset does not unregister it. Contact the organization that owns the tablet and ask it to remove or reassign the registration.
Work data did not restore after replacing a managed tablet
Ask IT whether both devices use the same managed Google Account and EMM and whether backup services are enabled. Google blocks fully managed transfer by default unless the EMM permits it, so repeated consumer restores will not override that policy.
When to stop and contact IT
Stop setup and ask the administrator for instructions if the tablet displays an unknown organization, requests credentials you were not given, reports noncompliance, or offers a reset that could erase business data. Also ask before removing a device-policy-controller app, changing the managed account, disabling a required screen lock or transferring a company tablet to another person.
Once ownership, migration and enrollment are handled in that order, the tablet can support personal and work tasks without assuming that either environment has access to the other. Keep the old device until every critical file and work function has been verified.
