Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The most reliable way to move to a new Android tablet is to copy your information during the tablet’s first setup. Charge and unlock the old device, confirm the Google Account used for your apps and backups, connect both devices to the internet, and choose Copy apps and data when the new tablet asks. You can use a compatible cable or transfer wirelessly; Google says both methods support the same data.
If the old device is unavailable, restore a backup associated with the correct Google Account instead. Neither route guarantees a perfect clone: downloads, some app data, non-Google accounts, non-Play apps and certain settings may need separate handling. Keep the old device intact until you have checked the new tablet.

What to prepare before turning on the tablet
A few minutes of preparation prevents the most common transfer failures. Set aside the old Android phone or tablet, the new tablet, their chargers, and—if you plan to use a cable—a data cable and any adapter needed to connect their ports.
Recommended Free Tools
- Charge both devices. A transfer can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data. A low battery can interrupt it.
- Unlock the old device. Have its PIN, pattern or password available. The old screen lock may be requested when restoring a backup.
- Know the right Google Account. Use the account that contains the apps, purchases, contacts or backup you want to restore. If you use several accounts, identify the one associated with the old device.
- Connect to the internet. Google recommends Wi-Fi for both devices. A network connection is required for the transfer and for downloading apps from Google Play.
- Check storage on the tablet. Open the tablet’s storage settings after it starts, or check the capacity before setup. A tablet with insufficient free space cannot receive everything you select.
- Keep the old device available. Wireless pairing and approval prompts appear on the old screen, and some content cannot be recovered after the old device is erased.
Transfer and backup screens vary by tablet maker, Android version, screen size and port type. Follow the labels shown on your tablet if they differ from the wording below. Google’s general instructions are written for Android devices and may use “phone” even when the destination is a tablet.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Start the tablet and choose the copy option
- Turn on the new tablet. Tap Start if that button appears.
- Select a language, region and any accessibility options requested by the setup wizard.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or another working internet connection. Enter the network password if needed.
- When the tablet offers to copy apps and data from another device, choose that option. Do not skip it if you want the built-in transfer wizard; Google says the direct setup transfer may be available only during initial setup.
- Sign in with the Google Account you intend to use. If the tablet asks you to verify an existing account after a reset, complete that security check with the previously used account.
The setup wizard may offer cable, wireless or backup-restore choices in a different order. Read each screen rather than selecting a method based only on an icon.
Choose between cable, wireless and cloud restore
| Method | Use it when | What you need | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct cable | Both devices are present and you have a cable that fits both ports. | A compatible data cable; an adapter may be required. | Both devices must remain connected while the wizard runs. |
| Wireless | You do not have a suitable cable or prefer not to connect the ports. | Both devices powered on, unlocked and connected to Wi-Fi or another supported network. | The old device must approve pairing prompts, and the devices should stay close together. |
| Cloud backup restore | The old device is lost, broken, unavailable or already wiped. | An enabled backup and access to the Google Account that owns it. | Only data included in the backup and supported by the new Android version can be restored. |
Google states that cable and wireless transfer support the same data. A cable is not automatically a more complete copy; its practical advantages are that it avoids wireless pairing and can be useful when network conditions make a wireless transfer unreliable.
Transfer directly with a cable
- On the new tablet’s copy screen, select the cable option.
- Connect the old device and tablet with a cable that supports data, not merely charging. If the connectors differ, insert a compatible adapter between them.
- Unlock the old device when prompted. Approve any permission or trust message that asks whether to allow the new tablet to access it.
- Follow the tablet’s instructions to select the content and apps to copy. The categories shown depend on the source device and Android version.
- Start the transfer and leave the cable connected. Avoid using either device for demanding tasks while the process runs.
- Wait for the completion message before disconnecting. Large photo, video or app collections can take hours rather than minutes.
If the tablet reports that the cable is unsupported, reseat both ends, try the adapter in the opposite orientation if it is reversible, and confirm that the cable carries data. If the wizard still cannot detect the old device, return to the method screen and use wireless transfer instead.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Transfer wirelessly
- On the new tablet, choose the no-cable or wireless transfer option.
- Keep the old device unlocked and near the tablet. The new tablet may display a pairing request, QR code or a short confirmation code.
- On the old device, approve the connection and any request to copy data.
- Confirm that the account and source device shown on the tablet are the ones you intend to use.
- Select the apps and data categories to copy, then start the transfer.
- Keep both devices powered on, near each other and connected to the network until the tablet says the transfer is complete.
Wireless transfer does not require buying a cable. If pairing fails, turn off battery-saver restrictions on the old device temporarily, reconnect both devices to the same reliable Wi-Fi network, and restart the pairing from the tablet’s setup screen. Manufacturer software can change the exact prompts.
Restore from a Google Account backup when the old device is unavailable
- During setup, choose the option to restore from a backup rather than copying from a nearby device.
- Sign in to the Google Account that was used on the old Android device.
- When a list of backups appears, select the intended device and the most recent suitable backup. If several devices are listed, check their names and dates carefully.
- Enter the old device’s screen lock if the setup wizard requests it. This is a security check for the backup.
- Choose the data and apps offered for restoration, then allow the tablet to continue setup.
Backup restoration depends on what was enabled on the old device. Google notes that not every app can back up or restore all of its settings and data. Restoration can also be incomplete when the new tablet runs an older Android version than the source. Some backup and transfer functions require Android 9 or later, and availability varies by Android version, app and device.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
If no backup appears, verify the account address, confirm that the old device actually had backup enabled, and check whether the backup belongs to a different device or account. Do not reset the tablet repeatedly until you have confirmed the account and the tablet maker’s current recovery instructions.
What the setup transfer normally includes
Google says the standard Android setup copy can include the following, although the exact result varies by device and Android version:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Apps and some app data
- Music, photos and videos stored in supported locations
- Contacts saved on the device or SIM
- Text messages and multimedia in text messages
- Most settings and wallpaper
- Call history
Selecting a category does not guarantee that every item inside it will appear. An app must support Android backup for its backed-up data to be restored, and some services keep information on their own servers instead of in the Android backup.
Content that needs a separate plan
The setup flow does not copy every file or account. Plan for these exceptions before erasing the old device:
| Content | Why it may be missing | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Downloaded PDFs and other files | Downloads are not included in the described setup copy. | Copy them manually to cloud storage, a computer or another external destination, then download them on the tablet. |
| Media in hidden folders | Hidden-folder content is excluded from the standard flow. | Use the original app’s export or backup feature, or reveal and copy the files manually if appropriate. |
| Apps installed outside Google Play | They are not included as Play app installations. | Obtain the installer only from the app publisher you trust, and confirm that the app supports the tablet before installing it. |
| Data from apps without Android backup | The app may not expose its settings or data to Android’s backup service. | Use that app’s own account sync, export, backup or transfer function. |
| Non-Google accounts and their data | The setup flow focuses on Google Account data. | Add the account again and follow its provider’s sync or export instructions. |
| Contacts and calendars synced to non-Google services | They may not be part of the Google backup. | Sign in to the original service on the tablet or export and import the records through that service. |
| Ringtones | Ringtones are listed among items that do not copy through the described flow. | Transfer the audio file separately and set it again in the tablet’s sound settings. |
| Some settings | Only most settings are copied; manufacturer and Android-version differences apply. | Review privacy, notification, display, accessibility and app-permission settings manually. |
Handle photos, files and messaging apps
Photos and videos
Photos and videos may be available through Google Photos if they were backed up there. Open Google Photos on the tablet, sign in to the same Google Account and allow time for the library to appear. Items stored only locally on the old device need a separate copy. Do not assume that seeing thumbnails online means every original file is stored locally on the tablet.

Files and downloads
Use the old device’s file manager to identify documents, recordings, downloaded media and folders that matter. Copy them to a trusted cloud-storage service, a computer or another direct storage route, then verify that the files open on the tablet. Preserve folder structure when an app depends on a particular location.

Google says WhatsApp chats can restore from the cloud after you sign in on the new device and open WhatsApp, but only if WhatsApp backups were enabled on the old device. Follow WhatsApp’s own restore prompt and use the same phone number and account conditions it requires. Other messaging, finance, password-manager and game apps may have their own migration process; sign in and look for an in-app backup or transfer command rather than assuming Android copied their private data.
Reinstall apps that are missing
Apps acquired through Google Play can generally be used on compatible Android devices without paying again when the devices use the same Google Account. Compatibility, country availability and developer support can still prevent an app from appearing.
- Open Google Play Store on the tablet.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Open Manage.
- Change the filter from This device to Not installed.
- Select the apps you want and tap Install. If an app is disabled rather than absent, choose the option to enable it.
Use the same Google Account that acquired paid apps. A purchase does not override a tablet’s compatibility requirements, and an app may be unavailable on a different device category or Android version.
Verify the new tablet before wiping the old one
Do this review while the old device is still usable. Mark each item as checked only after opening or testing it on the tablet.

The copy option is missing
Look for a setup screen labeled Copy apps and data, Bring your data from an old device or similar wording. If initial setup has already been completed, the direct transfer wizard may no longer be available. Check the tablet maker’s support instructions before considering a reset; a reset erases tablet data and some restore paths require one.
The old device is not detected by cable
- Unlock the old device and approve its USB or trust prompt.
- Reconnect both ends firmly.
- Confirm that the cable supports data and that the adapter matches both connectors.
- Try wireless transfer if the cable continues to fail.
Wireless pairing stops or times out
Keep both devices close, charged and unlocked. Reconnect them to a stable Wi-Fi network, temporarily disable battery-saving restrictions that suspend nearby-device features, and restart the pairing from the new tablet. A manufacturer-specific transfer app may be required when the standard Android wizard is not offered.
Some apps or settings did not appear
Check Google Play’s Not installed list, then open each missing app’s account or backup settings. Apps not installed from Google Play, apps without Android backup support and non-Google accounts require separate migration. Reinstalling an app does not necessarily restore its private data.
The backup cannot be restored
Check that you signed in with the account that owns the backup and selected the correct source device. Confirm Android-version compatibility: restoring to a tablet running an older Android version than the source can produce an incomplete transfer. Organization-managed devices may restrict backup or transfer of work data. Contact the organization’s administrator for managed content rather than trying to bypass its policy.

The transfer is taking a long time
Google describes a range from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data. Keep both devices connected and powered. Interrupting a large transfer can leave you with a partial result, so wait for the completion message unless the wizard displays an error.
Manufacturer and work-device differences
Tablet makers can add their own setup screens, account requirements and migration tools. Google’s Android Help specifically notes additional transfer options for Samsung devices, including Smart Switch. Owners of other brands should use the maker’s current instructions when menu names, ports or supported transfer routes differ from the standard Android flow.
A work or school organization may manage the tablet or source device. Management policies can prevent transfer or backup of some work data, limit account changes or require administrator approval. Personal data and managed data may follow different rules; verify the policy before attempting a reset or manual export.

Android version matters in both directions. Some backup and transfer features require Android 9 or later, and app support varies. A newer tablet usually has the best chance of accepting a source backup, while restoring to an older Android version can omit information.
When to use manual copying instead
Manual copying is appropriate for files excluded from setup transfer, such as downloads, locally stored recordings and documents. It is also useful when the old device is available but its backup is incomplete. Copy only the folders and data you understand, and avoid moving protected application databases into arbitrary locations; many apps will ignore them or treat them as corrupt.
For cloud-synced services, signing in on the tablet is normally safer than copying hidden folders. The service can then download data in its supported format and preserve account permissions.
