A secure Android setup starts before you copy anything: decide what data you actually need, use a strong screen lock, install every available system update, keep Play Protect on, review app permissions, configure backup deliberately, and verify Find Hub while the phone is still in your hand. Android menus differ by version, manufacturer, and carrier, so use the paths below or search Settings for the named feature.
1. Prepare both phones before setup
Charge the old and new phones, unlock the old phone, and connect the new phone to reliable internet—Wi‑Fi is preferable for a large transfer. Check free storage on the new device so an unexpectedly large photo or video library does not stop the migration.

- Have the old phone’s screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password available.
- Update the old phone enough that it can complete account verification and transfer prompts.
- Keep any USB-C or other data cable and a compatible adapter nearby if you plan to transfer by wire.
- Before wiping or trading in the old phone, identify high-value items such as authenticator codes, encrypted messaging backups, downloaded documents, and files stored in hidden folders.
During first-run setup, Android may offer Copy apps & data. Google warns that this choice may not be available later, so decide before skipping it. You can either copy directly from the old phone or restore a backup associated with your Google Account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2. Choose wired transfer, wireless transfer, or cloud restore
| Method | What you need | When it makes sense | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wired copy | A cable that fits both phones; an adapter may be required | The old phone is available and you want a direct, usually predictable migration | The cable must support data, not only charging |
| Wireless copy | Both phones powered on, unlocked, and connected as directed during setup | You do not have a suitable cable or want fewer accessories | Transfer time depends on battery, Wi‑Fi conditions, and the amount of data |
| Google Account backup restore | A current backup and access to the same Google Account | The old phone is unavailable, damaged, or already reset | Only data included in the backup and supported by each app can return |
Google says wired and wireless transfer support the same data categories. A cable is therefore optional, not a security requirement. If you use one, confirm both connectors and that the cable carries data.

3. Know what will—and will not—move
The transfer screen can include apps and certain app data, music, photos, videos, contacts saved on the phone or SIM, text messages, most phone settings, message media, wallpaper, and call history. The exact result depends on the Android versions, manufacturers, and individual apps.
Plan for exceptions. Downloads, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, unsupported app data, non-Google accounts and their data, and some device settings may not copy. App developers also decide whether their data can be backed up or restored.
Verify these items separately after setup
- Authenticator apps: confirm that codes or account-transfer tools work before retiring the old phone.
- Messaging apps: open each service and check its own backup and restore status; a phone-level transfer does not guarantee message history.
- Financial, work, and government apps: expect a fresh sign-in, device registration, or multifactor challenge.
- Files and downloads: compare important folders manually, including hidden or app-specific storage.
- Non-Google accounts: add them again and verify that contacts, calendars, and mail are syncing.
Do not erase the old phone until these checks pass and you have a separate copy of anything irreplaceable.
4. Complete first-run setup without weakening security
- Start the new phone and select the requested language, region, and network.
- When prompted, choose Copy apps & data if the old phone is available, or choose the Google Account backup option when restoring from the cloud.
- Authenticate the old phone and Google Account yourself. Do not hand an unlocked phone to someone else to complete this step.
- Review the categories and estimated storage before accepting the copy. Decline items you do not need rather than importing years of unused applications.
- Finish the setup, then leave the phone on Wi‑Fi and power while downloads and app updates complete.
If the copy prompt has disappeared, finish setup and use the backup and account controls available on the device; a full direct-copy workflow may not be offered again. This is one reason to make the transfer decision before tapping through the initial screens.
5. Set a screen lock that protects the phone and some backups
Open Settings and search for Screen lock, or look under Security or Security & privacy. Choose a PIN, pattern, or password. Avoid swipe-only access. Add fingerprint or face unlock only as a convenience layer; the underlying screen lock remains essential.
Google documents that some backed-up data receives additional protection from the device screen lock and specifically recommends a PIN, pattern, or password rather than swipe or Smart Lock for backup protection. Use a PIN that is not reused for banking, email, or your SIM, and store a recovery method somewhere safe in case you forget it.

Review automatic-lock timing and whether the power button locks immediately. A short idle timeout reduces the period during which an unattended phone remains open, while an excessively short timeout can make the device frustrating to use. Choose the shortest interval you can reliably tolerate.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →6. Install Android, security, and Google Play system updates
Check all three update areas rather than assuming one screen covers everything:
- Open Settings → System → Software updates for the Android version and available system updates.
- Open Settings → Security & privacy → System & updates on devices that place the Android security update and Google Play system update there. On other models, search Settings for Android security update and Google Play system update.
- Install each available update, restart when asked, and check again afterward. A second update can appear only after the first installation completes.
For a large update, Google advises connecting to Wi‑Fi and charging to at least 75%. Update timing varies by exact model, manufacturer, region, and carrier; do not infer a support period from another phone in the same product family.
After updating, record the displayed Android version, security-update date, and Google Play system-update date. Those details make future troubleshooting and support conversations more precise.
7. Keep Play Protect on and install apps cautiously
Install apps from Google Play whenever possible. Google describes Play Protect as checking potentially harmful apps, warning you about them, and removing apps when necessary. It is a useful detection layer, not a guarantee that every app is trustworthy.
Open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Play Protect, and confirm scanning is enabled. Review any warning before installing or opening an app. Treat requests to disable protection or install an APK from a message, advertisement, forum, or file-sharing site as a significant risk signal.

Google Android Help states: “Important: If you download apps from unknown sources, your device and personal information can be at risk.” Sideloading also changes the update and permission model, so use it only when you understand the publisher, file source, and removal process.
When an app asks for access, consider whether the function genuinely requires it. A calculator does not normally need your contacts; a navigation app may need location while in use. You can deny a request and test whether the app still performs its necessary function.
8. Audit permissions with Privacy Dashboard
Search Settings for Privacy dashboard. Depending on the phone, it appears under Privacy or Security & privacy. Select a sensitive permission—especially location, camera, microphone, contacts, phone, SMS, and files—to see which apps used it and when.
Google’s documented history window is seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. These are activity windows, not a complete lifetime record, and menu labels and availability vary by release and device.
Permission-review procedure
- Open the dashboard and select one sensitive permission.
- Inspect each app in the access list and ask whether the access matches its purpose.
- Change unnecessary access to Don’t allow, Ask every time, or Allow only while using the app when those choices are available.
- Open the app once more. If a needed feature fails, grant the narrowest permission that restores it.
- Repeat the review after installing unfamiliar apps or after a major Android update.
Also inspect special access pages—such as accessibility, notification access, install-unknown-apps, device-admin, and VPN controls—because these powerful capabilities may not appear as ordinary camera or location permissions.
9. Configure backup deliberately
Search Settings for Backup, commonly under System or Google. Android backup can include app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. The app developer determines whether all of an app’s data is eligible for backup or restoration.

Google says backup data is encrypted in transit and that some data receives additional encryption with the device screen lock. Its guidance specifically does not extend that screen-lock encryption statement to Google Photos photos and videos or carrier MMS media. Cloud-backed categories therefore do not all have identical protection.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Make the backup match your priorities
- Turn on only the categories you want stored in the selected Google Account.
- Check which account receives the backup if several accounts are present.
- Review account-level storage and controls if reducing cloud use is important.
- Use each app’s own export or encrypted-backup feature for services that do not reliably restore through Android backup.
- Run a fresh backup after you finish setting up the phone, then confirm its timestamp.
A backup is not the same as a complete archive. Keep separate copies of irreplaceable photos, documents, recovery codes, and app-specific exports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Turn on and verify Find Hub before the phone is lost
Sign in to the Google Account you intend to use, enable location, and confirm that the phone appears in Google’s device-finding service while it is still with you. Google says a signed-in Android device has Find Hub turned on automatically; the service can help locate, secure, or erase a device remotely.
- Search Settings for Find Hub or Find My Device, depending on the Android release.
- Confirm the finding service is enabled and that location is available.
- From another trusted device, sign in to the same Google Account and verify that the new phone is listed.
- Check that account recovery details are current and that you can complete multifactor authentication without the missing phone.
- Learn the available actions—locate, play a sound, secure, or erase—before an emergency.
Remote actions depend on the phone model, settings, battery, network connectivity, and service availability. If you erase the device, treat that as a last-resort recovery action because local data may no longer be recoverable.
11. Review the combined security overview and lock-screen exposure
On Android 13 and later, many phones provide a combined Security & privacy page. It can show status alerts for device lock, account security, Play Protect, updates, device finding, permissions, and lock-screen notifications. Older releases may separate Security and Privacy, and manufacturers can rearrange or rename every section.
Open the lock-screen notification controls and decide whether message previews, one-time codes, calendar details, or email subjects should be visible while the phone is locked. Hiding sensitive content reduces shoulder-surfing and exposure to someone who can briefly handle the device, while still allowing you to see that a notification arrived.

Resolve visible warnings one at a time. A warning about an outdated update, disabled screen lock, or exposed notification is more actionable than treating the page as a generic security score.
12. Final verification checklist
- Old-phone data you care about is present, including authenticator and messaging recovery.
- A PIN, pattern, or password is active; biometrics are optional convenience controls.
- Android version, security update, and Google Play system update show current available status.
- Play Protect scanning is enabled, and no unnecessary unknown-source installer is active.
- Camera, microphone, location, contacts, SMS, and file permissions match actual app needs.
- Backup categories and the selected Google Account are intentional, with a recent backup timestamp.
- Find Hub lists the phone from another trusted device.
- Lock-screen notification previews reveal no information you would not want a stranger to read.
- The old phone remains intact until verification and any required account transfers are complete.
What to do when a setup step fails
The transfer cannot see the old phone
Unlock both phones, reconnect them to power, confirm Wi‑Fi or cable data connectivity, and restart the transfer. If a wired attempt fails, try wireless; Google says both methods support the same data. If neither works, restore the newest Google Account backup and manually verify the exceptions listed earlier.
An app or message history is missing
Check whether the app was installed outside Google Play, whether its developer supports backup, and whether its own account or encrypted-backup workflow was completed. Search the old phone’s storage and hidden folders before deleting anything.
