After transferring your data and signing in, install available system and app updates, then tune the screen and review which apps can use sensitive permissions. Use Battery Saver when its limits suit your needs, and make deliberate choices about location and diagnostic sharing. Settings and features differ across Android versions and manufacturers, so check your phone maker’s support page if a menu does not match.
How do I set up a new Android phone?
Finish the initial transfer and account setup first. Then use this checklist to get updates installed, reduce avoidable battery use, and review privacy controls. Menu labels and paths vary by handset and Android version.

- Install updates. Check for available Android system updates and app updates from Google Play. Google includes both in its battery troubleshooting guidance; consult the manufacturer’s help page for the exact system-update path on your phone. Google’s Android battery guidance
- Adjust the screen and review battery use. Shorten screen timeout, reduce brightness or enable automatic brightness, and check the battery screen for apps using a lot of power.
- Review permissions. Open Privacy Dashboard under Privacy or Security & privacy, depending on the phone, and check access to location, camera, and microphone.
- Choose location and diagnostics settings. Decide which apps need location and whether you want to share Usage & diagnostics with Google.
How can I make my Android phone battery last longer?
Start with the display and high-use apps
A shorter screen timeout and lower brightness can reduce power use. Automatic brightness may help manage the display without constant manual adjustment. Check the battery-use screen to identify apps consuming more power than expected; restricting an app may affect its background activity. Adaptive Battery and Dark theme are additional options where available. If keyboard sounds or vibration are not useful to you, turning them off may also help.
These are practical options, not a guaranteed percentage increase in battery life. The effect depends on the phone, its software, the apps you use, and how you use the device. Use Battery Saver with its trade-offs in mind
Battery Saver can extend a charge by limiting or turning off background activity. Depending on the phone, it may also delay app activity or network connections, or reduce visual effects and other features. If you rely on timely messages, backups, or other background tasks, test whether they still work as expected while Battery Saver is on.
Keep the phone cool and charge it sensibly
Heat speeds battery drain and can damage the battery, so avoid leaving the phone in hot places, especially while it is fully charged. When possible, use the adapter supplied with the handset. Google warns that other adapters may charge slowly or not at all and could damage the phone or battery. If the supplied adapter is missing or damaged, check the manufacturer’s charger guidance for your exact model before choosing a replacement; compatibility cannot be determined without the handset model.

Repeatedly draining the battery to zero to “train” it is unnecessary. Google says, “You don’t need to teach your phone the battery’s capacity by going from full charge to zero, or zero to full.” Google’s battery guidance
Which Android permissions should I turn off?
There is no permission that every user should disable on every phone. Revoke access an app does not need for its real purpose, while keeping permissions that support features you use. For example, a navigation app may need location while you are following directions; a game may not need ongoing location access.

Review access in Privacy Dashboard
Open Settings and look for Privacy Dashboard under Privacy or Security & privacy. Select a permission, such as camera, microphone, or location, to see which apps accessed it and when; then change access for apps that do not need it. Google documents an activity window of seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. The available history depends on the Android version. Google’s instructions for Privacy Dashboard
Choose the least access that still works
For an app’s location permission, consider Allow only while using, Ask every time, or Don’t allow, as appropriate for its function. On supported phones, you can also turn off precise location for an individual app, allowing approximate access instead. Labels vary by version and manufacturer. How do I stop apps from tracking my location?
Location is controlled at more than one level. You can manage an individual app’s permission, choose precise or approximate access where supported, adjust Location Accuracy on compatible devices, or turn off the device’s Location setting. These controls have different effects.

In Settings, find the app’s permissions or the location-permission list, then select the access level that fits what the app does. A map app may need precise location during navigation; a social app might function with approximate location or without location at all. Restricting access may disable location-dependent features in that app. Google’s app-permission instructions

Understand device Location and Location Accuracy
Turning off device Location reduces access to location by apps and services, but can also disable useful functions such as finding a lost phone, location sharing, location-based search, earthquake alerts, and location-based time-zone features. Google says emergency location handling can still send a device’s location to emergency responders when an emergency number is called or texted. Google’s device-location settings guide
Location Accuracy is a separate setting on supported devices. It can use Wi-Fi access points, cellular networks, GPS, and sensors to estimate position, particularly where GPS signals are obscured. If your aim is to limit how precisely a particular app knows your location, consider approximate app access rather than turning off device Location and losing location-based functions across the phone. Does turning off Usage & diagnostics stop Android updates?
No. Google says that turning off Usage & diagnostics still allows essential services, including Android version updates. The setting controls whether your device shares certain usage and diagnostic information with Google; it does not control information that individual apps may collect. It is therefore not a universal privacy switch. Google lists the path as Settings > Google > More > Usage & diagnostics, though labels can vary. Google’s Usage & diagnostics guidance
