For the best picture from a new 4K TV, choose a picture mode that suits your room and content, make sure each connected device can send the signal you want, then adjust only what looks wrong. There is no single set of picture values that works for every TV: model, region, lighting and source content all affect the result.
Before you change settings
Finish the TV’s initial setup and note its exact model and region. Picture modes, menu names and available HDMI features vary by model, product year, firmware and country. For example, Samsung publishes different menu guidance for newer Canadian models and older sets. Check the manual or support page for your exact TV before following model-specific instructions.

Also consider the room and the content you watch. LG notes that room lighting, screen reflectance, picture settings and video content all affect the picture a viewer sees. A setting that looks right in a dim room may not suit a bright one.

Choose a picture mode for the room and content
For films in a dark room
Start with a movie-oriented preset if you watch films in a dim room. Samsung describes Movie mode as optimized for television and movies in a dark room. FILMMAKER MODE is intended to preserve the director’s creative vision, but Samsung cautions that it may appear darker than other picture modes. If that presentation is too dim for your room, try another available mode rather than forcing a preset that does not suit your viewing conditions.
#1 Best Overall
- All features of the first edition disc
- 3D stereoscopic calibration and evaluation patterns
- Audio tests for speaker setup, calibration, and A/V sync
- Motion patterns to evaluate 120Hz and 240Hz interpolation modes
- More patterns for the advanced user or professional calibrator
For other rooms and viewing habits
Use the Picture menu to compare the available modes with the content you actually watch. LG and Samsung both advise choosing based on environment, preference or video type; neither supports copying a universal preset recipe across TV models. Make the comparison from your usual seat and with the room lighting you normally use.
Check picture size and adjust brightness carefully
Confirm that the picture-size or aspect-ratio setting shows the source without unintended cropping. Menu names differ, so use your TV’s manual if you cannot identify the right control.
Then adjust screen light output for the room and your comfort. Samsung’s US guidance distinguishes backlight or screen light output from other picture controls; its Canada guidance also covers brightness, contrast, sharpness and color. Those controls and their behavior can vary by model, so use small changes and judge the result on familiar content instead of entering values copied from another television.
Set up each HDMI input for its source
Streaming boxes, game consoles and Blu-ray players may need an HDMI signal-format setting to use a higher-quality signal. Sony’s documented path on supported BRAVIA models is Settings → Channels & Inputs → External inputs → HDMI signal format. Choose the format appropriate to the connected device and the specific TV port; this path is not universal across brands or Sony models.
Sony cautions that an enhanced format can cause picture or sound problems with incompatible equipment. If the source stops displaying correctly or audio/video becomes unstable, return that input to Standard format and check the TV, port and device specifications.
Use an HDMI cable suited to the signal
A cable upgrade is not automatically needed for every 4K setup. For Sony’s listed use cases, a Premium High Speed HDMI cable rated for 18 Gbps supports its specified 4K high-quality format. Sony specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable supporting 48 Gbps for 4K at 100/120 Hz or 8K. Check that the source, TV input and cable all support the format you want; a cable cannot add capabilities missing from the TV or source.
Choose gaming settings based on responsiveness
Use Game Mode when reducing input delay matters and your TV supports it. Samsung says this mode optimizes speed, with a possible slight decline in graphics quality. If you prefer the non-game picture presentation and responsiveness is less important, compare both modes with the games you play.
High refresh rate and variable refresh rate (VRR) are not available on every 4K TV or HDMI port. On supported Sony models, the right signal format depends on the console and the input; Sony’s guide covers 4K/120 Hz and VRR only where supported. Check your model’s port specifications before expecting either feature.

Connect the TV to your home network and confirm that the app or external streaming device is actually delivering the format you want. Sony’s Help Guide places Wi-Fi setup under Network & Internet and says a 5 GHz connection may help streaming quality where the TV and region support it. A separate Sony support result for an individual model says the streaming-service picture setting may need to be Auto or High for best 4K/HDR output; treat that as model- and service-specific, not a universal menu instruction.
Consider calibration only if you want a more guided adjustment
Try the TV’s built-in tools first. Samsung’s Smart Calibration is available only on supported televisions with a compatible phone, and availability varies by model and region. Samsung also describes calibration discs for use with a Blu-ray player. These are optional routes, not prerequisites for using a new TV, and the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a guaranteed improvement or a universal need for professional calibration.
